Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The Dreamer sets out to prove that the uproar over Tamyra Gray's too-early American Idol dismissal was justified, and mostly it succeeds. Several of these 13 tracks sound radio-ready--especially the sultry "Legend" and the show-offy, booty-shaking opener "Star"--while others simply underscore what millions of armchair talent scouts already know: even saddled with an ill-fitting genre, like the cliche-studded rocker "Faces," Tamyra will sing her way out of it. The record is in no way perfect--its surf through the musical-styles spectrum leaves listeners with the impression they're the subjects of an at-home experiment, albeit a pleasant one, and its lyrics could use a hearty shakedown from the trite police--but all told Tamyra nails a neat trick here, and that is to exalt the degree to which all ex-Idol hopefuls ought to be taken seriously. She pulls up the pack by dint of pure vocals and a poured-dry heart, and for that even Simon should shower her with props. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars A new direction with a new lineup.......2007-05-18

This isn't Supertramp's first album although it was the first that most people heard. What might surprise people was that Supertramp started off as a prog band. Their first album had four members and no horns. Their original guitar player Rick Palmer would quit over the band's musical direction and end up as King Crimson's lyricist from Larks Tongues thru Red. Their first album Supertramp wasn't even available in the US until 1976. This is their third album and finds the band headed in a different direction and doing quite well at it. This was a monster hit album and ended up making the band one of the most popular band's of the '70's. To try and pick out any song would be tough as the whole album recieved a lot of airplay back in 1974 and 1975 and 1976...well, you get the idea. I have to admit I don't listen to it that often but when I do, I enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Crime of the Century.......2007-05-16

One of our favorite cd's.Some of the best music of the 70's or better yet "EVER!" Every song is classic and will never get old. Super Tramp lives on!

5 out of 5 stars Memories of City Hall Glasgow.......2007-05-13

Saw Supertramp perform this album in full at Glasgow City Hall, November 1974. They blew me away. The support act was a newcomer - Chris De Burgh. Every track is a gem. Typical of the best '70's progrock, this album is best listened in total and in begining to end sequence. That night I new I was at the begining of something special. The next few albums were all five star performances. Their live shows were note perfect and and enthraling. They can sound a little dated now. However the memories are magic. The line from Supertramp leads through current bands such as Coldplay and Snow Patrol.

5 out of 5 stars This Is One Underrated Piece Of Goodness.......2007-04-29

The first Supertramp song I heard was Take The Long Way Home(great song). After that, I brought Breakfest In America. I liked it alot. Then one day, I was searching around on ITunes and I found this album. I read the reviews and all of them said this album was Supertramp's best. So I decided to buy 3 songs: School, Bloody Well Right, and Dreamer. That was a mistake. I should have brought the whole album because when I listened to those, I quickly became addicted to Supertramp. After listening to those, I had to buy the whole thing. After listening to the whole album without interruption, I had to ask myself: Why haven't I ever heard of this album? This could be the most underrated album in rock history. It's that good. The only negative I have about this album is the songs don't really connect that smoothly(think Pink Floyd).
SONGS:
School: Sounds alot like Pink Floyd. At first, I didn't like it. Then after listening to it again, I loved it.
Bloody Well Right: A song so catchy, it should be illegal. Keyboard work is crazy good in this song.
Hide In Your Shell: Just listen to it. It will blow your mind.
Asylum: A song thats haunting yet comical at the same time.
Dreamer: Great pop song. Listen carefully to the words.
Rudy: A pretty sad song. Great sound effects. Takes alittle getting used to.
If Everyone Was Listening: Very odd song. Many hooks to be found in this gem.
Crime Of The Century: Fantastic song. Fits well in today's world.
OVERALL: I didn't love any of these songs the first time I listened to them. Now I do. Give it time. It will touch you(in the good way).

5 out of 5 stars Stranded on a island good!.......2007-03-07

Wow! This is Supertramp's 3rd album and how they have grown! The first two albums Supertramp and Indelibly Stamped were good and leaps and bounds ahead of what others were doing at that time. Something apperently clicked and a super band was born! Every song stands strong on its own merit here. If you are looking to start a Supertramp collection, buy this first. So if you end up stranded on an island and some genie grants you musical wishes, well now you know what to wish for.

Amazon.com essential recording

Nakai's most recent outing finds him returning once again to the simple under-produced style that he pioneered on Changes. This program includes 10 traditional tunes from the Kiowa, Lakota, Dakota, Zuni, and Cheyenne; seven of his own compositions; and "Lake That Speaks," from the second movement of James DeMars's "Two World Concerto." On this album the Native melodies sound forceful, almost triumphant, partially due to the short, staccato bursts that Nakai often uses to begin a melodic line--sounds that bring to mind a child's laughter or the contented chirping of a dawn bird. For the Cheyenne "Victory Song" and the Dakota/Lakota melody "The Great Mystery Hears Me" Nakai uses more sustained notes than usual, and the clear, piercing tone of his flute illuminates the heart like a ray of midday sunshine. --j. poet

On Dreamer, São Paulo-born, Manhattan-based pianist Eliane Elias performs bossa novas and brush-stroked ballads by North and South American composers from Johnny Mercer to Antonio Carlos Jobim. This project is a sort of musical homecoming for Elias, who once worked with bossa nova pioneer Vinicius de Moraes. Elias's pretty pianisms complement her breathy Portuguese/English contralto, especially on the '60s hit "Call Me," "Photograph (Fotografia)," and "So Nice (Samba de Verão)." Elias's two compositions, "Movin' Me On" and "Time Alone," can be considered smooth-jazz-friendly, but the Bahia bounce of "Doralice"--where Elias quotes Stan Getz's well-known tenor solo--and her instrumental rendering of Burt Bacharach's "A House Is Not a Home" are highlights of this masterpiece of soft syncopation. Rob Mathes's elegant, Claus Ogerman-style string arrangements enhance the mood. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

lazy sunday afternoons, or in the rush hour after work, there is something that will be soaked by your body and soul, life afterall, is it not to be enjoyed by something beautiful?

What a voice, what a piano, what arrengements... and it all there for the taking, this is for your special collection.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-08-27

One of the best CD's I've purchased. Eliane has a soft magical voice. The perfect choice for escapism, relaxation, romance or just day dreaming. There's not a bad song here.

5 out of 5 stars So Nice!.......2006-06-28

I took a break from the SmartMarriages conference I was attending in Atlanta and slipped over to the Peachtree Mall looking for a quick snack. While I was there I happened upon a little shop called International Records. Since my wife was born and raised in Brasil I'm always looking for new music with a Brasilian flavor that we can share.

As I flipped through the row of Brasilian/Portuguese cds the shop owner recommended the new release by Elaine Elias. Within moments of Dreamer beginning I know that this was for me.

The music in Dreamer by Elaine Elias is smooth, sensual, and luscious. Elaine sings beautifully and her piano playing is magical. My favorite song is "So Nice."

So nice, life would be so nice
If one day I'd find
Someone who would take my hand
And samba through life with me

I can foresee many romantic evenings spent with my wife Joy, the Joy of my life, enjoying candlelight, wine, and the music of Elaine Elias. Maybe we'll even samba too.

Someone to take my heart
And give his heart to me
Someone who's ready to
Give love a start with me

I highly recommend you get a copy of Dreamer and create a romantic evening for you and your sweetie! Maybe you'll be inspired to try a little samba too!

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable.......2006-05-16

This CD was a nice surprise. I had heard of Ms. Elias in the past, but never listened to her music. I found this CD to be very smooth and refreshing, yet it is not just fluffy stuff by someone with a pretty face. I found the music to be very well done (and I wish I could put it in better words). I will definitely look into other CDs by this artist.

"Casa" is the Portuguese word for "house." It's also the title of this melodic and moving tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim by the Oscar® and Grammy award-winning pianist-composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, and his vocalist wife, Paula. The Morelenbaums, who cofounded Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum, both worked with the maestro, and almost all of the tracks here were recorded in Jobim's Rio home. The CD contains fluid and florid renditions of bossa nova-era classics from the Jobim canon, from "Amor em Paz"--with Jobim's son Paulo on guitar--and "Bonita" to "Vivo Sonhando." It also unveils rare songs like "Chanson pour Michelle," a short and sweet composition written for a soap opera, and a never-before-heard work, "Tema para Ana," an intimate piano/cello duet. Sakamoto's spare and splendid pianisms ring from Jobim's piano. Morelenbaum's singing cello tones complement his wife's angelic Portuguese and English vocals. Together this talented trio--with occasional accompaniment by percussionist Marcos Suzano, guitarist Luiz Brasil, vocalist Ed Motta, and bassist Zeca Assumpçao--beautifully exposes the French influences of Satie, Ravel, and Chopin in Jobim's music. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Celestial music - .......2007-05-07

My Profile: 43 yo - no music qualifications whatsoever-

I got this fine cd last year in my first time in Buenos Aires.. though my trip was for widenning my musical horizons.. what can I said that has not been adequately commented by more knowledable reviewers than I?.. the music is serene, celestial, non-strident...he piano, the cello and that voice!! you know you are prividledged in life to have a chance to comtemplate on this type of beauty... whatever scars we have in the soul and body, take a moment to soothe yourself..

5 out of 5 stars Gentle Magic to Free Your Soul.......2007-03-28

I just love love love this CD. Everything about it is so artfully rendered, it takes my soul away to gently float free in a most beautiful place. Ms. Morelenbaun has a voice that, of all female vocals in the world, is often my most favorite to hear. Virtually no vibrato, just clean and clear exquisite and delicate classic femininity. Mr. Morelenbaum, Mr. Sakamoto and all supporting musicians provide the most sensitively interwoven instrumental skills that there could ever be; they perfectly ride, complement and contribute to the magical musical moment that is always now, in flowing pieces such as these. Of course, the ineffably beautiful heart and soul of the basic songs to start with are indispensible (thank you now and forever, o-most revered JC Jobim!). Honestly, this CD places in my top 10 of all time, especially now, in my more relaxed and gentle mature years... ;)

5 out of 5 stars Some of the Best Music ever!.......2007-02-03

I came by the Morelenbaums by 'A Day in New york'. It was love at first
sound. I checked out to see if anything else was available. I found 'Casa'
and immediately ordered it. It has been in my CD player since I got it.
This from a Classical music buff and a college music degree. This music
defies description (I do like bossa nova and Jobim especially). This group is so together, it sounds like the members know exactly what each
other is thinking. It is all so right that it appears precision and class
like this is not possible. Paula's voice has a simple (without vibrato) beauty that is mesmerizing. The arrangements are exquisite. The Cello and piano never over-do and the whole is something you must hear to believe. I can only add to this - GET IT!!

5 out of 5 stars jazzman.......2007-01-17

Absolutely fabulous renditions of Jobim. Paula's voice is so pure and
gentle, along with Jacques' cello gliding through the sketches. And the
pianist Sakamoto is perfect as well. I just love this cd. I quickly
obtained their other Jobim tribute cd "A Day in New York" (the Japanese
enhanced version with 5 bonus tracks), which is even further proof that
there is a musical heaven on earth. So sophistocated, cool, and gentle.
I eagerly await their next release. 5 million stars.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely amazing...........2006-01-16

So much to say about this wonderful recording. As I write this, there are 27 reviews posted for Casa and not one of them is less than 4 stars, with the vast majority as 5 stars. That speaks volumes in itself. But the quality of the words and the thought behind them is truly a tribute to Jobim. If we were all lucky enough to have him with us now, the words of these reviews would surely either make him smile or bring tears of joy to his eyes. This truly is music that soothes...reflects...and makes us all appreciate either finding it or being introduced to it by someone. Introduce only your best friends to this, those that would appreciate it as much as you and I do.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's Dreamy.......2007-01-10

This is a very wonderful recording of Stephen Foster by a master singer.
Foster's songs are of a more innocent and naive time in the American psyche, a time that it would not hurt us to remember, given the wretched brutality of American culture today (something you'll appreciate after listening to this recording).

The songs are beautifully sung by Mr. Hamspon, and the musical accompaniment with piano, mandolin, tuba, banjo, etc. seems a perfect setting for this period music. I enjoyed the musical interludes of Foster songs (not sung by Mr. Hampson), such as "Oh, Suzanna", "My Old Kentucky Home", and "Camptown Races." They are foot-stompin' and finger-snappin' good in a non-syncopated way.

Mr. Hampson's voice is so beautiful, and he has done such a wonderful job with these song's you'll just have to hear it, and when you do, tell me that you're not dreaming.

I remember reading a quote by John Phillip Sousa that decried the use of syncopation in American popular music. I never understood it until listening to this recording. The richness and intensity of American popular music (as experienced in the work of Stephen Foster) has been lost.
Everything has to be so cool today, thanks to syncopation, and "cool" really means no emotion.

If emotion is what you want, emotion is what you'll get with Stephen Foster's songs. It was a time when the death of loved ones (especially those who died in their youth) was experienced more often (see "I Dream of Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair" and "Gentle Annie"). And we were not protected from the vicissitudes of fate by myriad government programs, modern medicine and universal prosperity (see "Hard Times").
Husbands and wives had their differences then, as today, (see the amusing song "My Wife is a Most Knowin' Woman") The passion of the Civil War (Foster was a Unionist),is reflected in a wonderful, fun song, "That's What's the Matter."

If you love good music, and you have heart which can be stirred, and you love your country, this is for you.

I love this recording. It has opened up the door to my "beautiful dreams," dreams of bygone days, lost love, and whatever else we pine for.

I wanted to buy several copies for my friends, but somehow I felt that the impact of this recording was so personal, that it could not be shared with others. Not that they couldn't enjoy it, but that I could not begin to share the intense emotion and reverie stirred in my heart by these beautiful songs.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Composer of all time.......2006-08-20

Growing up playing his stuff on piano, I love the instrumentality of this CD..the violins give off that wail that he speaks of..I am not sure what it is about Stephen Foster but these verses..grab me like no other..there is so much sensitivity to it..

I dream of Jeannie with the light brown hair
Born like a vapor on the summer air
I see her tripping where the bright streams play
Happy as the daisies that dance on her way
Many were the wild notes her merry voice would pour

but the violins in this CD make this CD the best out there..
FYI should you be into astrology Stephen Foster is definition of Cancer...Sun and Moon conjunct in Cancer with mars in Scorpio..i love his lyrics..almost to the point of obsession..

5 out of 5 stars An American classic from Hampson that brings smiles and tears.......2006-07-17

Stephen Foster was the greatest American composer of sentimental parlor ballads--he so perfectly imitated folk songs that his music wound up turning into them. In an age of home music-making and later of families sitting around the radio, Foster's songs were a staple, often performed by crossover artists from opera like Lawrence Tibbett. Those were plump, ripe styles of singing, highly flavored by church hymns.

In this 1992 collection of 17 Foster favorites, plus a few rareties, Hampson drops the platform manner and goes straight for heartfelt sincerity. His tone is plain yet sweet, his expression intimate. He is accompanied by instruments redolent of the Victorian drawing room (guitar, fiddle, upright piano), and the mood they create brings tears and smiles of remembrance. This music is embedded in America's genes, and it's wonderful to realize that every note is still alive and throbbing with feeling.

5 out of 5 stars OMG!!! More than 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 stars, one of the best album in the world!!!.......2005-11-25

Simply one word, WOW!!!
Thomas Hampson's voice is simply fantasic. His voice is very different from regular operatic baritone voice, very sweet, and rich. I really cant believe an operatic baritone can sing folk song like THIS good, in my opinion he sounds even better than his opera works in this album. His voice and the background music matches perfectly, the outcome would move u to tears, and u can feel the origin of MUSIC. This album really shows what the word MUSIC means, and the songs simply just ALL beautiful. I like his "beautiful dreamer", "my life is well knowing woman", and "jeanie with the light brown hair" the most. When I listen the songs I would just imagine that I am in the world of past USA, and I can feel the life of the ppl in the past USA~ just like watching an old classic movie, it would touch ur heart and fall in love with this album.

5 out of 5 stars It's simply lovely.......2004-12-14

I didn't know Stephen Foster (I thought): wrong: Oh Susanna, etc, I knew, but had no idea who the composer was.

This CD is a revelation. The melodies are so beautiful, as are the poems, and Thomas Hampson just brings them to life as wonderfully as ever. I especially love "Beautiful Dreamer" - it gives me butterflies - and "My wife is a most knowing woman" - the way he makes the voices and the indignation is just brilliant. If one needed reminding what a brilliant singer Mr Hampson is - this disk does it.

Stephen Collins Foster is sometimes called America's first great songwriter, but you could make the case that he was also the country's first real pop star. Writing songs such as "Camptown Races" and "Oh! Susanna," Foster, a college dropout, was self-destructive, couldn't keep a marriage together, and ended tragically. Living on the Bowery, he gashed his throat in a fatal fall in 1864 at age 37, dying with only 38 cents in his pocket. The idea of a Foster tribute record may seem staid and archaic, particularly as his lesser known tunes are parlor and stylized minstrel songs. But minstrelsy was a lot like rock & roll, and the Pittsburgh native left behind an impressive body of work that draws upon the diverse branches of music brought to America by settlers and slaves from Europe and Africa. Beautiful Dreamer, on which 22 artists celebrate 18 of his compositions, surprises with its breadth of subject matter, tempo, and interpretation, including the use of the glass armonica and santour. Most of all, the album is uncommonly soulful--Mavis Staples's dignified but heartbreaking performance of "Hard Times Come Again No More," David Ball's elegiac "Old Folks at Home (Swanee River)," and the feathery rendition of "Slumber, My Darling" by Alison Krauss, Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mark O'Connor resonate in both the heart and the head. If Foster, the pop star, were alive today, he'd likely sit at the piano in shades and gelled-up hair. But he'd be playing these same songs, timeless and achingly poignant. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

Although America's first great songwriter, Stephen Collins Foster, died 140 years ago, his legacy lives on in the hundreds of songs he left behind. Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs of Stephen Foster was recorded to celebrate his enormous gift to American culture. Foster's compositions (including "Oh! Susanna," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Camptown Races," "Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair" and "Hard Times Come Again No More") are woven into the fabric of our national identity, yet most music fans today know little about him. Foster has been unjustifiably overlooked in recent decades. No collection of his music recorded by contemporary artists has existed until now. Although tribute albums have become much too common, this project's historical significance distingusihes it from a crowded field.

Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs Of Stephen Foster is a collection of Foster's most beloved compositions - and lesser-known exquisite parlor songs of his day - sung by some of today's most respected musical artists. The album includes songs by: Raul Malo, Alison Krauss with Yo Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Mark O'Connor, BR549, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Judith Edelman, The Duhks, John Prine, Henry Kaiser, Beth Nielsen Chapman, David Ball, Michelle Shocked & Pete Anderson, Grey De Lisle, Mavis Staples, Ollabelle, Roger McGuinn, Suzy Bogguss, Will Barrow and Ron Sexsmith.

All of the proceeds from Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs of Stephen Foster will benefit American Roots Publishing, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving American regional culture through literature and art. Goals are accomplished by supporting artists who honor regional culture through their work and by linking them with communities in focused educational programs.

5 out of 5 stars Moving Modern Update to Classic American Songs.......2007-05-11

This collection is a thrilling and moving presentation of the core of American music, uniquely updated with new rhythms and insturments. The "Hard Times Come Again No More", by Mavis Staples, alone is worth the price. The rest of the songs are free.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Album.......2007-04-05

This is a beautiful piece of work, obviously a labor of love for all involved. You can hear for yourself that Stephen Foster practically invented the modern song. How incredibly far ahead of his time he was. What other 19th century songwriter has received this kind of reverent modern tribute in the past 50 years??

My favorite track is No One to Love, which will break your heart.

5 out of 5 stars One hundered sixty years melted away........2007-03-20

The songs of Stephen Foster are as pertinent today as they were when he originally wrote them. "Beautiful Dreamer" and "I Dream of Jeannie with the light brown hair" float you away on a cloud of delight. In most instances, the powerful melodies and charming lyrics are not dated at all. The perfomers are some of the best around from our national treasure and keeper of the folk art, Roger McGuinn to the lesser known Raul Malo everyone brings to the CD the best of their wonderful abilities. The Duhks version of "Camptown Races is great and belies its Civil War era origins and Michelle Shocked and Pete Anderson's "Oh, Suzanna" makes you think it was just written. Buy this one for your collection or just to listen. J.Micheal Lelis

5 out of 5 stars Missing one song.......2007-01-17

This is a very easy album to hear. I do wish "Old Black Joe" had been included. It is such a mournful song.

I read somewhere the short lifetime of Steven Foster's earned him about $15,000.00 for his song writing!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful eclectic collection.......2007-01-11

I am thoroughly enjoying this CD. Some of the songs are Stephen Foster classics, but others I had never heard before. The artists are quite diverse--again, some are well known (e.g. Allison Kraus) but most are new to me. Many of the arrangements are interesting and original. I especially recommend Mavis Stapleton's rendition of "Hard Times" which is very moving. I bought the CD because I heard this track on the radio.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden Gem.......2006-04-18

This is Shorter's first Blue Note album and it is without a doubt a classic. It definitly has a Coltrane influence in its virtuosity. However, you can really see Shorter developing his own voice: one that really takes off on his next series of albums on this same label. Also, unlike Coltrane, he lets another horn compliment and shine, especially on this album. You really cant go wrong with any of the albums that followed, such as "Speak no Evil" or "Ju Ju". However, the reason I would choose this one first is the lineup that accompanies him. Lee Morgan is one of the most underated trumpet players. He and Shorter really hit a stride together. The combination of McCoy Tyner(piano) and Elvin Jones (drums) round out a premier band. It has more of a mellow feel than his next few albums. I would also add that I totally disagree with the assesment in another review that Shorter is "better" than Coltrane. I think such comparisons are silly. Coltrane was going for a totally different feel; more experimental and spirtual, for a lack of better terms. Shorter is seeking more of a mood. Both are valid expressions. Shorter is much more acessible. You will love this album on the first listen. That shouldnt dissuade you that its not a great work, however. It really is great jazz listening. I never grow tired of this album.

5 out of 5 stars Shorters first Milestone.......2005-03-05

Although not getting interested in music until the age of 16, Wayne was to become one of the most important sax players in the history of jazz. Shorter was the main sax player in three of the most popular jazz groups ever. Starting off with the Hard Swinging Art Blakeys Jazz messengers. Althouh his main influence was still coltrane, Shorter began to develope his own style and to improvise more fluidly. Once when Coltrane had had enough of the Miles Davis Quintet he told Shorter of the open spot in the quintet. He went for the chance and soon became not only Miles best running mate but a brilliant composer in the group too. His stint with the fusion based Whether Report, lasted from 1970 until 85.

Night Dreamer was the first of 9 bluenote albums that the saxophonist was to record. You can see the major influence of Coltrane in Shorter, not only in his playing but his rhythmn section of McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, Elvin Jones which was basicly Coltranes working trio. The first and title track starts off with Tyner, then workman and Jones join in to set the groove. Shorter and Morgan deliver excellent solos and Tyner with his masterful right hand lines. Shorter, as I said, was to become a brilliant composer but his most celebrated work are his ballads. "Virgo" (two takes), is a definite masterpiece and ranks among some of Shorters best ballad pieces including "Infant Eyes" from "Speak no Evil" and "Lady Day" from "Soothsayer". The tunes are powerful and this session is much more than just a organized jam. "Armageddon" has a misterious feeling which is present in a lot of Shorters work. Night Dreamer was Wayne Shorters first milestone, and not his last.

5 out of 5 stars Wayne's First, One of His Best.......2005-03-02

Wayne Shorter's "Night Dreamer," his first album as a leader for Blue Note, briefly drifted out-of-print on CD over the past year, but now is back in all its remastered glory with this RVG reissue. And it's a good thing too because this is not only one of Wayne's best efforts, but one of Blue Note's all-time Top 50 discs. The tenor-saxophonist is joined on this April 29, 1964 session by Lee Morgan, McCoy Tyner (listed amusingly as "Etc" on the cover for contractual reasons), Reggie Workman and Elvin Jones. On "Night Dreamer," Shorter takes the composition and playing talents that he honed with the Jazz Messengers to a new level. (In fact, Miles Davis was impressed enough by Wayne's growing stature to offer him a spot in his second great quintet later that year.) The songs featured here, especially "Black Nile," "Virgo" and the title track are as good as anything Shorter penned, and that's saying something considering how many classic tunes he wrote during the 60s and beyond. But as good as the writing is, the playing is even more remarkable. In my opinion, Wayne has forged a cleaner sound, and a more distinctive yet somewhat ethereal voice since his earlier days with Blakey's group. His musical understanding with his colleagues, particularly frontline partner Lee Morgan, is unparalleled. And speaking of chemistry, the rhythm trio of McCoy, Elvin and Reggie Workman certainly have it after all the time they spent together with John Coltrane. Personally I still find "Speak No Evil" to be Shorter's best BN outing, but "Night Dreamer" is a very close second (as in 2nd place in the 100m dash at the Olympics!). Thanks to the RVG series, those who have previously neglected to get this classic jazz album, no longer have to dream about buying "Night Dreamer."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best American Idol CD yet........2007-05-26

Not only do I believe that Tamyra Gray is the best contestant that was ever on American Idol but I feel that this is probably one of my favorite cd's of all tme. The music on this cd is very diverse. She does not stick to just one type of music like many artists do. Some songs are very poppy while others have an R&B feel, and than there is even a little disco. She covers everthing even a little gospel and a little rock. Her vocals are amazing and the pure raw emotion behind the voice is absolutely compelling. This is a must have for anyone's cd collection.

4 out of 5 stars Very, Very Good.......2006-08-09

I have always loved Tamyra Gray. I don't understand why more people didn't buy her album. In my opinion, Tamyra is WAY better than most female R&B artists today (ie. Beyonce). I don't know, maybe people felt that she wouldn't be all that great because she came from a talent show, but so did Britney and Justin and Christina, and Tamyra is better than two of the three (Britney and Justin). I love "Seventeen" and "Faces". But, most of these songs are really good. If you haven't bought the album yet, please do, you won't be sorry. I promise. :)

3 out of 5 stars Kinda weak..........2006-07-11

Well...just to sart...Tamyra Gray is a great and talented artist and songstress. But this album does not do her justice. If you've ever seen any of the first American Idol shows featuring her...you know what I'm talkin about. She is capable of so much more. And the producing was so, so. Alright, but not great. Hopefully her next album will be better produced and written. I really like Tamyra, but this is just...I think she would have done it differently if she could. I would have. 3 stars because I know what she can actually do, given the right producers and writers.

4 out of 5 stars chaosprincess.......2006-02-12

Raindrops Will FaLL IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL AND SOULFUL SONG, I THINK SHE HAS TRUE GOD GIVEN TALENT AND SHOULD HAVE WENT FURTHER IN AI. BRAVO TAMYRA YOU SHOWED THEM.

4 out of 5 stars This album is SLAMMIN'!.......2005-12-28

Ok. This album is perhaps one of the best to come out of an American Idol competitor, right up there with Breakaway and Free Yourself. THe thing that most amazes me about this album is that Tamyra not only delivers almost flawless vocals, but she wrote all but the last song on the album. No, the lyrics aren't perfect, but for a first attempt on a MAJOR RECORD LABEL, I take my hat off to her.

Track 1- "Star" is a great opener. It is catchy, original, and has good lyrics and a strong vocal.

Track 2- "The Only Thing" is really rather like Star in that it has more of a pop flavor than an R&B. I like this song, but I don't think it should have come right after Star.

Track 3- "Legend" is a great soul slammer. It is a great song that delivers good lyrics and an AMAZING vocal. This I have actually heard on the radio.

Track 4- "Raindrops Will Fall" is the second best track on this album. It is a powerful ballad with beautiful vocals and great lyrics. I am in love with this song.

Track 5- "Ha ha" is just an o.k. song. Skip it unless you really want to listen to the whole CD.

Track 6- "17" is one of my personal favorites. It is a kinda jazzy, soulful mix of beautiful vocals and o.k. lyrics.

Track 7- "Don't Stop" it is a cool song. It is kind of disco-ey with a splash of pop and is a good break inbetween songs.

Track 8- "Uve Only Got 1" is a good song. I like this. It is fairly un-original in style, but has great lyrics and vocals.

Track 9- "Faces" is a rock song, which is odd for Tamyra. But it is VERY GOOD. Lyrics and everything.

Track 10-12 I haven't listened to but I have been told that 10 and 12 are good and 11 is not so good. You decide.

Track 13- "God Bless the Dreamer" is THE BEST song on the album. Hands down. It is gospel, inspirational and is AWESOME!

I saw a program on OPB about him so I got this. But, I didn't like it and don't listen to it. It is now under my bed collecting dust.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific choral renditions.......2006-01-27

I own this CD and am especially fond of it for the solos by Thomas Pyle and Clayton Krehbiel, particularly the latter's singing of "I Want to Die Easy." All other soloists and choristers are equally superb, but those two gentlemen, sadly since deceased, were personal acquaintances and musical influences. If you don't have a taste for great choral arrangements, then pass, but you'll be missing out on something special. Enjoy it, you who adore the finest.

1 out of 5 stars Make the exquisite into the mundane.......2004-07-21

Oh, puleeze, this is the sappiest rendition of these gorgeous songs ever recorded, right up there with sing-a-long with Mitch Miller.

I always hate when songs that are meant to be sung intimately as solos or duets are done by 7,000 harmonized voices.

I recommend this recording only to be listened to in a nice comfortable elevator

5 out of 5 stars Great Drinking Music!.......2002-07-20

This CD Kicks ...! BR>The trombone riff in "Camptown Races" is incredible. The screaming axe in "Oh! Susanna" is mind-blowing. The fantastic jamming on this CD reminds me of HMTT. This CD is one monster hit after another. "Steal Away To Jesus", is a real kicker, although not quite as good as "Will You F'n Give Me Jesus".......

Just sit back, pop a cold one, maybe a whiskey shooter , pop this

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CDs.......2000-08-09

This is one of the best recordings of historic American music that I have heard, along with Joel Cohen's "Liberty Tree." The arrangements and interpretations of the songs are very beautiful. Some of the banjos are cheesy, but it is much much better than every other Foster recordings that I have heard. If you are in the mood to hear great music of Antebellum America, than I highly recommend this CD to you. You won't regret it!

This young Oklahoman suffers no sophomore jinx, as his second album boasts more power, command, and range than the debut that spawned his breakthrough hit, "Austin." With another hit ballad, "The Baby," Shelton again displays his mastery of the heart-tugging story song, while anthems such as "Heavy Liftin'" and the madcap adventure of "Playboys of the Southwestern World" demonstrate his affinity for more muscular fare. "In My Heaven," "My Neck of the Woods," and "Georgia in a Jug" confirm that his country roots run deep, with the production by veteran songwriter Bobby Braddock combining banjos and fiddles with screaming rock guitars and the most contemporary studio technology. The title song and centerpiece of the collection is Shelton's bittersweet reflection on his career, the dream that he wasn't quite prepared to see come true. Yet the confidence he displays on the rest of the CD suggests that he's learning to live with success just fine. --Don McLeese
