For a woman who makes her living as a singer, Keke Wyatt doesn't seem to need many words. Soul Sista kicks the party off with the jagged "Used to Love," which features Wyatt's wordless moan swirling around edgy beats. It all sounds good enough, but it's missing a real jolt of energy or attitude. Throughout much of this lackluster debut, Wyatt never really lets loose or stands her ground in the manner of a solo act. Producer Steve Huff seems content to let her sing under her breath or almost as an afterthought. When you finally get a chance to hear the real potential of her voice in the smoldering ballad "If Only You Knew" (the only cut not written by Huff), Wyatt's husky, somewhat nasal tone has a spicy underbite that elevates the mediocre material. But, ultimately, this album's material is Keke's undoing. As much as she tries to breathe honest emotion into a pedantic dance track like "I Can't Wait," it's hard to turn something somewhat shallow into something deep. --Amy Linden

5 out of 5 stars Soul Sista For Real.......2007-03-09

Soulfull and dynamic. The first time I heard it, I wanted to know more about the artist. I certainly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Great Single.......2005-12-28

Great song! It is good that a few are not sticking to the "corporate music" script and Bilal is one of them. I can't wait until his sophomore album comes out!

5 out of 5 stars MODERN CLASSIC..........2002-06-12

SOUL SISTA... The first time I heard this song I was vacuuming the living room floor when all of a sudden I just stopped and said "OOOhhhhh.. I am finally hearing real authentic black music from the soul. Finally a fresh breath of air." I was mesmerized and in a trance from the sweet sound of his voice. Everything about the song and video had meaning unlike anything I had heard or seen in a long time. No frills simply pure music and a meaningful black and white video. The next thing I did was run to the record store grab the single. Every song and snippet touched my soul. It was like I was in a dream. All the songs had I true meaning from a person who you could tell was putting his entire soul into each song. I believe this song ranks up there with some of the great songs of the past in my opinion. This single is MUST HAVE for any R&B purist. Nothing else to say but "PICK IT UP AND SEE FOR YOURSELF."

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2001-04-17

DWill from NYC.. man youre dead wrong about the 'advance' Bilal album (the 8 mp3s you got off of napster). Of course those are rough tracks, unfinished or whatever.. but they are extremely soulful r&b tracks coming from a rare new talent that is just gonna blow the scence up. No songs have have enveloped me like Bilal's since i first heard Adrianna Evans. "Sometimes" "Home Is Where I wanna Be" and "Your Love Sent to Me" are classic cuts that put me moods that no other songs can. Maybe I'm feeling Bilal so hard because im the same age as him, I dont know.. just give those tracks another listen or two, they'll grow on you and you'll be fiending for more. I know am. peace

5 out of 5 stars A Fan of Neo Soul.......2001-04-11

I love this song, but if his album is anything like the songs that I got off napster, he definitely needs to go back into the studio and re do his whole album. Don't get me wrong, I'm feeling his work on Common Sense album and a couple of his songs, but, this guy is mega talented and I know his sound is more polished than musiq's. He can blow and I don't think what I heard was his best or even close to a valient effort. His voice is tighter than musiq's, anyone who has studied voice and music theory can see, but Musiq's album is going to be much tighter if he doesn't go back into the lab. In a recent interview in a magazine, Musiq stated himself that his album was somewhat rushed. Music lovers have really been waiting for this album, and I think that he should have put more work into it than he did. Sometimes, Your love sent to me, and Soul Sista are banging, but, All that I am, Home is where I wanna be, Hand me down, and Love poems don't come close to showing his true talent. I'm waiting for the album patiently hoping that he comes correct. If you have been following neo soul then you would know in 95 there was an artist by the name of Frankie, album ( My heart belongs to you) Chcky Thmpson of Bad Boy Prod. Musiq's voice resembles his. Frankie got no airplay, and his album was toooooooooo tight. No dis to Musiq because he is tight, I just want to give others their just do. Come Correct Bilal or don't come at all

5 out of 5 stars Sista Monica's comeback CD tells it all!.......2005-09-29

Ohmygosh! Reading the insert, I learned that Sista Monica was absent for two years battling and beating a difficult cancer. Sista Monica wrote amazingly inspirational songs about her story in this album, many autobiographical. Can't Keep a Good Woman Down, Cookin' with Grease, It's Good to be Alive!, Surrender to Love. Amazing and hot music! I found myself dancing wildly in my livingroom, by myself, and then bought all her other albums (this was my first). The insert also told me she is donating 10% of the sales to healingjourneys.org, whose trademark is "Cancer as a turning point, from surviving to thriving!" Maybe the Powers that Be healed this woman so she can continue to inspire people for a long time to come! I have since read about her winning audiences over immediately, as she has sung all over the world. Treat yourself to this one. And you'll help people in real need too. Wow.

3 out of 5 stars An alright start........2007-07-20

I had been intending to buy this album for quite awhile now. I saw Soul Sista in numerous 'best of' and 'favorite' lists here on Amazon, I loved all the singles released and of course her beautiful voice caught my attention, too. (I also heard one day on the radio that she stabbed her husband with a butter knife, which still sticks in my mind to this day...)

So I finally bought it and after my first listen, I was quite disappointed. Is this the album everybody was so hyped up about? I listened once more and I enjoyed it a little bit more. KeKe has a deep and smooth alto voice, but for some reason she doesn't attempt to showcase it to its fullest ability. She barely ad-libs on any of the songs. Not a very good choice, especially on tracks like "Push Me Away" that have extremely repetitive and boring refrains. The production, all done by apparent friend Steve "Stone" Huff, is bland and does not have distinct sound. The lyrics, subject matter, and the overall album seem to sometimes fall into oh-so-tiring R&B clichés.

But there are some good aspects to this album. "If Only You Knew" is a nice re-make of the Patti Labelle classic. The singles "I Don't Wanna," "Used To Love" and "Nothing In This World" are all very nice and the closing track, "Call On Me," is a great ballad.

Overall, this an alright debut from a very talented woman. She released a superb single with a great message in 2005 called "Put Your Hands On Me." Unfortunately, the song came and went without much attention and no news has been heard of a new album. (Well, what else do you expect from the people at Cash Money Records? They did the same thing to Lil' Mo.) I wish KeKe all the luck and this album is worth a listen, I suppose.

4 out of 5 stars New Soul Sista.......2007-02-03

I enjoyed this cd alot. KeKe Wyatt is another one of those artist who never get their props. This cd was really good every track is worth listening to. She did a good job on the Patti Labelle remake if ONly you Knew. Worth buying I highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Soul Sista - actually 2.5 stars.......2006-05-07

This is an ok debut. I was expecting a little more given the fact that I've only heard KeKe sing 'MY FIRST LOVE' with Avant and was impressed. This disc contains only 3 songs that really stood out to me: DON'T TAKE YOUR LOVE - showcases her beautiful voice very well; I CAN'T WAIT - she & Avant's voices really complement one another, their duets sound beautiful; CALL ON ME.

Overall, I felt that the songs were too similar sounding and didn't make full use of her voice. The only other song that I can comment on is her horrible rendition of Patti Labelle's IF ONLY YOU KNEW - KeKe sang it in a higher register that was very unpleasant to listen to. It was almost like she was trying to sing it just like Patti does but she doesn't have the vocal skill or range of Patti so it sounded like a cat drowning to me. She gets "props" for taking on a legend but her version falls flat.

I hope she gets to work with producers who can make better use of her voice for her sophomore set.

3 out of 5 stars Good first effort.......2005-11-21

Keke Wyatt's first album was very well done. Most of this album consists of ballads. I like Talkin' Bout Love the most and the soulful If Only You Knew. The reason I'm taking one star off to make it three stars is that sometimes the songs are too identical, that thump-thump-thump of Steve Huff's production so evident. Did Steve just go "thump-thump-thump--that's a wrap, next song, thump-thump-thump--good, next song" when he recorded Keke's album? I say that since Huff produced three different R&B albums in 2001-2002 for Avant, Sparkle and Wyatt. Entire albums of those three! And sometimes Keke's songs could have fit on either Avant or Sparkle's albums when you think that Huff produced some 30+ songs of nearly the same kinds of rhythms and beats. Sometimes there's a blandness to some of Huff's monontonous thump-thump-thump ballads that doesn't work for Keke. But Keke's strong singing outdoes whatever weak spots Huff provided to the project.

4 out of 5 stars KEKE HAS SKILLS & GREAT PRESENCE BUT "SOUL SISTA" SHOULD'VE BEEN LONGER!!.......2005-06-29

LIKE IT OR NOT SHE HAS SOUL ALONG WITH A GREAT VOICE... HER & AVANT WERE SUPERB NEW-COMERS!! I LIKED THEIR CHEMISTRY TOGETHER ON AVANTS' "MY 1st LOVE"! IT DIDN'T MATTER IF KEKE WOULD'VE CREATED "IF ONLY YOU KNEW" OR RENEWED IT FROM PATTI LaBELLE SHE STILL DELIVERED (NO MATTER WHAT SOME SAY)! *THE TITLE IS SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE SHE PRECISELY HAS SOUL & SHE A SISTA (SO WHY NOT)!
*LISTEN 2 HER SONGS NOW & YOU HEAR WHAT I WROTE 4 YOURSELF!!*

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully slick........2005-06-20

Ms Kight is a superbly talented woman who produces anthem like, slick, smooth songs with nostalgic soul beats and roots.
Her voice is incredibly bell like and range-filled, encapsulating emotion and emapthy perfectly. This album now stands as definitive work which both sells and describes the artist. She also journeys through r+b/soul in new and exciting ways, a difficult feat with this pleasent but limiting genre.

5 out of 5 stars Great...........2004-06-30

Great singer with great, well writen songs. A must have for any music fan!

5 out of 5 stars Prodigious Sista.......2004-05-11

It still stands to reason that R&B can be one of the most tepid, bland, and uninspiring genres since 80's metal. Which is why, for some reason, acts like Beverley Knight don't have worldwide success. Anyone doubting Beverley Knight's ability need look no further than her stellar sophmore album 'Prodigal Sista', an album that drips with soul and untouched beauty. Knight is the second coming of Aretha Franklin, and due to Whitey Houston's latest and silly hijinks, a much needed voice to blues and contemporary r&b. Although that voice is only heard in European countries, that shouldn't stop American buyers from jumping at the oppurtunity to purchase any of Knight's soul stirring albums.

'Prodigal Sista' stands as one of Beverley's best albums. Obviously, many people doubted her abilities, but she eagerly and fiercely brushes off the haters with her melodic and soaring voice. It is fair to say that Knight hasn't made an awful album, nor does she follow the recommended 'guest appearances' that bog down several of her counterparts studio efforts. Instead, Miss Knight opts to use her best asset: that incredible voice.

On 'Prodigal Sista', Beverley evokes the likes of Etta James, Chaka Khan, and Whitney Houston. The up-tempo jam 'Made it Back', has Knight proving that a dance-floor ready jam can still be soulful, and she flawlessly shows her range and passionately transforms the lyrics into breathing, living experiences. If the orchestral, and truly haunting ballad 'Sista, Sista' doesn't leave your eyes watering, the song will leave you with jaw on the floor syndrome. Beverley passionately cries out to women, boldly creating a ballad that is honest and soul stirring. Elsewhere, Miss Knight slows things down on the blues inflected 'The Need of You.' Her voice is passionate, gritty, and the lyrics are a potent example of an artist transcending hooks and a good beat, and transforming their songs into poetry.

Haters need not approach Miss Knight, as she clearly boasts on 'A.W.O.L.' While not the strongest track on her album, it is easily relatable and sung beautifully. With 'Prodigal Sista' an excellent 16 tracks long, a breakdown of all the songs seems unnecessary. The lyrics are ripe, fresh, and exude a humanity and warmth devoid on many urban records. I have said it once, and will say it again. When Beverley invades the United States, which she will in very due time, Beyonce, Ashanti, and Whitney (who will hopefully come back to us because she is missed) better run for cover, if not for better material!

As I close my review on this classic, sophisticated, and SOULFUL debut, let me add that Miss Knight posseses one of the most powerful, beautiful, and versatile voices I have ever heard. Beverley has the rare ability to affect you with her song craft, and she refuses to be glossed up and over-produced, instead working towards stardom in the way that many r&b divas should take heed of. 'Prodigal Sista' is no doubt one of the best r&b albums I have, and for that matter ever made. Definitely a must have!

4 out of 5 stars Soul Knight.......2001-11-06

This sensational cd is the second from the the UK's queen of R'n'B. After an overlong hiatus following her debut 'B-Funk', Beverley Knight made it back with this release which won her a MOBO award for Best Album. This followed on from the previous year's MOBO Award for Best R'n'B Act.

There is a lyric on the track 'Send Me, Move Me, Love Me' which sums up Knight's voice perfectly: "Cocoa Butter Chocolate Smooth". Listen to the ballads namely 'Damn', 'A.W.O.L.', and 'Strong Hand' and you will feel this wonderful voice run over you like the sweetest nectar. The first track - a short intro based on the hook for her song 'Good Morning World' - is particularly delicious as Beverley Knight's acapella voice is multi-layered singing all the intricate melody lines. This then leads into the first uptempo track 'Made It Back' which proves she can punch an uptempo song out with the best. This whole cd is a real aural treat as Knight did all the vocal arrangements.

The great bonus of this version of the album is that it includes 3 remix tracks: 'A.W.O.L.' and the single release versions of 'Made It Back' and 'Greatest Day'. The last two never fail to give me palpitations!! 'Made It Back' is sung over a sample of Chic's 'Good Times' which provides a perfect backdrop for Beverley's burning vocal. This anthemic track is totally life-affirming. And then there's 'Greatest Day'... this has to be one of the greatest UK soul recordings ever. I can't imagine how many times I have played this track but it still sounds fresh and exciting. Beverley sang this for Nelson Mandella at a free concert in London's Trafalgar Square earlier this year and she turned in a performance even more impassioned and liberating than here... and this one is pretty fierce! I never want these two particular tracks to end... if only to hear more of Beverley's thrilling playout ad-libs!

I cannot recommend this cd high enough - listen to this and have your faith restored in soul/R'n'B.

Oh and a personal note... I was lucky enough to (literally) bump into Beverley on a London street and, with many apologies for sounding too over-the-top, attempted to tell her how much this album meant to me. She was as delightful as I had hoped and very friendly. A real star.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best!.......2001-10-18

A great album not to be missed! Beverley Knight's album has a soulful R&B side such as sista sista, AWOL and strong hand as well as some up beat R&B tracks like greatest day, made it back (a favourite), and rewind. There is nothing negative to say about this album, the only thing that would make it better would be for it to have more tracks however quality always wins it over quantity for me any day.my favourite tracks are "rewind" and "Made it back" as they are very up beat/ feel good tunes! Don't miss Beverley Knights new single called "Get Up", as well as her new album.
Beverly knight is a true British R&B female artist who has the talent to write brilliant songs and has a strong yet first-class voice. With previous hits like Moving on up (on the right side), Flava of the old school, Made it back and greatest day, I'm sure she will be up for winning loads @ the MOBO next year
Her current album is brilliant but I'm sure her new album, will be even better.

5 out of 5 stars A great voice that deserves to be heard.......2007-01-24

Sometimes I go for an online walk and try to hear as much new music as I can. One evening I stumbled across Maya Azucena among a huge pool of other talented artists. I knew straight away that she was a standout talent: a good strong voice with plenty of soul & moxie, terrific old school sound, and just a lot of bumpin' grooves. What more could you want? So I ordered her one and only CD (apparently from 2003) and when it came I listened to little else for the next week. Naturally I was hungry for more music from this fine artist. But I can't really find any more about her online. I'm hopeful that she's been courted by a label that is growing her talent even greater. I know it's heresy to hope that an indie artist gets picked up by a major label...but the only thing missing from this CD is that little bit of magic that happens when a great talent meets a great producer. But don't get me wrong -- this is a terrific album. I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Philly All Day!!!!!!.......2005-01-23

It's amazing that no one has reviewed this album yet. It's a great compilation of spoken word. Infused with the urban rhythms that Philly artists are famous for. Don't get me wrong. She is in no way similar to anyone else. But, she is indeed All Philly!!!!
