For a woman who makes her living as a singer, Keke Wyatt doesn't seem to need many words. Soul Sista kicks the party off with the jagged "Used to Love," which features Wyatt's wordless moan swirling around edgy beats. It all sounds good enough, but it's missing a real jolt of energy or attitude. Throughout much of this lackluster debut, Wyatt never really lets loose or stands her ground in the manner of a solo act. Producer Steve Huff seems content to let her sing under her breath or almost as an afterthought. When you finally get a chance to hear the real potential of her voice in the smoldering ballad "If Only You Knew" (the only cut not written by Huff), Wyatt's husky, somewhat nasal tone has a spicy underbite that elevates the mediocre material. But, ultimately, this album's material is Keke's undoing. As much as she tries to breathe honest emotion into a pedantic dance track like "I Can't Wait," it's hard to turn something somewhat shallow into something deep. --Amy Linden

An alright start........2007-07-20
So I finally bought it and after my first listen, I was quite disappointed. Is this the album everybody was so hyped up about? I listened once more and I enjoyed it a little bit more. KeKe has a deep and smooth alto voice, but for some reason she doesn't attempt to showcase it to its fullest ability. She barely ad-libs on any of the songs. Not a very good choice, especially on tracks like "Push Me Away" that have extremely repetitive and boring refrains. The production, all done by apparent friend Steve "Stone" Huff, is bland and does not have distinct sound. The lyrics, subject matter, and the overall album seem to sometimes fall into oh-so-tiring R&B clichés.
But there are some good aspects to this album. "If Only You Knew" is a nice re-make of the Patti Labelle classic. The singles "I Don't Wanna," "Used To Love" and "Nothing In This World" are all very nice and the closing track, "Call On Me," is a great ballad.
Overall, this an alright debut from a very talented woman. She released a superb single with a great message in 2005 called "Put Your Hands On Me." Unfortunately, the song came and went without much attention and no news has been heard of a new album. (Well, what else do you expect from the people at Cash Money Records? They did the same thing to Lil' Mo.) I wish KeKe all the luck and this album is worth a listen, I suppose.
New Soul Sista.......2007-02-03
Soul Sista - actually 2.5 stars.......2006-05-07
Overall, I felt that the songs were too similar sounding and didn't make full use of her voice. The only other song that I can comment on is her horrible rendition of Patti Labelle's IF ONLY YOU KNEW - KeKe sang it in a higher register that was very unpleasant to listen to. It was almost like she was trying to sing it just like Patti does but she doesn't have the vocal skill or range of Patti so it sounded like a cat drowning to me. She gets "props" for taking on a legend but her version falls flat.
I hope she gets to work with producers who can make better use of her voice for her sophomore set.
Good first effort.......2005-11-21
KEKE HAS SKILLS & GREAT PRESENCE BUT "SOUL SISTA" SHOULD'VE BEEN LONGER!!.......2005-06-29

Beautifully slick........2005-06-20
Her voice is incredibly bell like and range-filled, encapsulating emotion and emapthy perfectly. This album now stands as definitive work which both sells and describes the artist. She also journeys through r+b/soul in new and exciting ways, a difficult feat with this pleasent but limiting genre.

Prodigious Sista.......2004-05-11
'Prodigal Sista' stands as one of Beverley's best albums. Obviously, many people doubted her abilities, but she eagerly and fiercely brushes off the haters with her melodic and soaring voice. It is fair to say that Knight hasn't made an awful album, nor does she follow the recommended 'guest appearances' that bog down several of her counterparts studio efforts. Instead, Miss Knight opts to use her best asset: that incredible voice.
On 'Prodigal Sista', Beverley evokes the likes of Etta James, Chaka Khan, and Whitney Houston. The up-tempo jam 'Made it Back', has Knight proving that a dance-floor ready jam can still be soulful, and she flawlessly shows her range and passionately transforms the lyrics into breathing, living experiences. If the orchestral, and truly haunting ballad 'Sista, Sista' doesn't leave your eyes watering, the song will leave you with jaw on the floor syndrome. Beverley passionately cries out to women, boldly creating a ballad that is honest and soul stirring. Elsewhere, Miss Knight slows things down on the blues inflected 'The Need of You.' Her voice is passionate, gritty, and the lyrics are a potent example of an artist transcending hooks and a good beat, and transforming their songs into poetry.
Haters need not approach Miss Knight, as she clearly boasts on 'A.W.O.L.' While not the strongest track on her album, it is easily relatable and sung beautifully. With 'Prodigal Sista' an excellent 16 tracks long, a breakdown of all the songs seems unnecessary. The lyrics are ripe, fresh, and exude a humanity and warmth devoid on many urban records. I have said it once, and will say it again. When Beverley invades the United States, which she will in very due time, Beyonce, Ashanti, and Whitney (who will hopefully come back to us because she is missed) better run for cover, if not for better material!
As I close my review on this classic, sophisticated, and SOULFUL debut, let me add that Miss Knight posseses one of the most powerful, beautiful, and versatile voices I have ever heard. Beverley has the rare ability to affect you with her song craft, and she refuses to be glossed up and over-produced, instead working towards stardom in the way that many r&b divas should take heed of. 'Prodigal Sista' is no doubt one of the best r&b albums I have, and for that matter ever made. Definitely a must have!
Soul Knight.......2001-11-06
There is a lyric on the track 'Send Me, Move Me, Love Me' which sums up Knight's voice perfectly: "Cocoa Butter Chocolate Smooth". Listen to the ballads namely 'Damn', 'A.W.O.L.', and 'Strong Hand' and you will feel this wonderful voice run over you like the sweetest nectar. The first track - a short intro based on the hook for her song 'Good Morning World' - is particularly delicious as Beverley Knight's acapella voice is multi-layered singing all the intricate melody lines. This then leads into the first uptempo track 'Made It Back' which proves she can punch an uptempo song out with the best. This whole cd is a real aural treat as Knight did all the vocal arrangements.
The great bonus of this version of the album is that it includes 3 remix tracks: 'A.W.O.L.' and the single release versions of 'Made It Back' and 'Greatest Day'. The last two never fail to give me palpitations!! 'Made It Back' is sung over a sample of Chic's 'Good Times' which provides a perfect backdrop for Beverley's burning vocal. This anthemic track is totally life-affirming. And then there's 'Greatest Day'... this has to be one of the greatest UK soul recordings ever. I can't imagine how many times I have played this track but it still sounds fresh and exciting. Beverley sang this for Nelson Mandella at a free concert in London's Trafalgar Square earlier this year and she turned in a performance even more impassioned and liberating than here... and this one is pretty fierce! I never want these two particular tracks to end... if only to hear more of Beverley's thrilling playout ad-libs!
I cannot recommend this cd high enough - listen to this and have your faith restored in soul/R'n'B.
Oh and a personal note... I was lucky enough to (literally) bump into Beverley on a London street and, with many apologies for sounding too over-the-top, attempted to tell her how much this album meant to me. She was as delightful as I had hoped and very friendly. A real star.
Simply the best!.......2001-10-18
Beverly knight is a true British R&B female artist who has the talent to write brilliant songs and has a strong yet first-class voice. With previous hits like Moving on up (on the right side), Flava of the old school, Made it back and greatest day, I'm sure she will be up for winning loads @ the MOBO next year
Her current album is brilliant but I'm sure her new album, will be even better.
