Established as bona fide hit makers thanks to the success of the albums All Day Music and The World Is a Ghetto, the Los Angeles-based seven-man group War aimed for a hat trick with the 1973 album Deliver the Word. Less mainstream in its approach than its chart-topping predecessors, the seven-cut set boasted just one hit in the form of the groove-flavored "Gypsy Man," a top 10 pop and R&B single in the summer of '73. Exploring Latin rhythms, funk, jazz, and rock, Deliver the Word stretched musical boundaries. "In Your Eyes" was a lengthy opus that came complete with orgasmic sighs, an opportunity for the skillful musicians to stretch out. One of the true standouts was the catchy "Me and Baby Brother," which should have been a much bigger hit for the band. The album's title cut was a brilliant soulful ballad, while "Blisters" was a fine bluesy close for the album which, in spite of its lack of hit singles, became the band's third gold LP in succession. --David Nathan

Deliver the Word..........2007-02-04
Unforgettable masterpiece.......2006-05-16
There is no forgetting any of these songs, or the mood they create. This a cohesive piece of music-making that envelopes you and keeps you in its grip.
Unique does not begin to describe the sound War creates. Here are creative artists with a vision that is, by the time of this album, fully realized.
This album is never out of my regular rotation at home or on the road.
Highly recommended.
War's forgotton Word.......2006-04-04
War's sprawling epic Gypsy Man proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the band, being the veteran hit makers that they became, could compete on both sides of the Billboard charts. Although Deliver The Word (the title could be considered misleading)wasn't as politically charged as their first release, non-the-less parallels the "fingers" lp to some degree.
Deliver The Word for obvious reasons, should considered War's forgotton gem. Why United Artists chose not to market this recording with the same intensity as their next studio release (the commercially successful Why Can't We Be Friends?) is anyones guess. Any real War fan has this one.

War Second best.......2006-03-05
War hits its peak with the release of 'The world is a ghetto' in 1972, followed by this strong album.
Difficult to hear music as good. Almost impossible to hear anything better. Highly recommended for the Soul Jazz or Rock lovers.
It's not perfect but.............2005-08-20
Yes, it isn't like the other War albums. And that's OK. War was more than those other albums. The group had a sound that was unique, varied, and popular with social messages that are still true today. My teen age kids like War and this album(Which in itself is rather scary). This album, apparently, doesn't fit well together according to liner notes about it. I disagree. I always thought it flowed rather well. I always found comfort in the flow from "H2O Overture" to "In your Eyes" to "Me and Baby Brother" to "Southern Part of Texas". Sort of like a building wave that ends with just the right peak. Another classic album that transcends eras.

Finally a Messiah with fervor!.......2005-10-20

Good and Bad.......2000-04-09
This is a great recording!.......2000-02-11
Anyhow, this is nothing more than a historic detail and would not count if this recording had not an outstanding first-rate ensemble of singers. Without doubt there is no definitive version of Messiah. Each one has its own distinctive touch and feeling and exploring it is always a pleasant journey through imagination.
As stated by the conductor: "we must concede that performing Messiah with twenty singers and an appropriately balanced instrumental ensemble represents, at best, an imperfect comprimise", it will be easy to understand that this recording does not stand among the greatest and will probably carry some imperfections. I will mention two that kind of disppointed me a little bit. The Overture and the Chorus Worthy is the Lamb, for some reason misses the habitual vigor and strenght. Everything else is great and this is definitely a worth buying.

In 1947, the American Heritage Foundation arranged for the original Declaration of Independence and other historic national documents to tour the country on a red, white, and blues Freedom Train. Paul Robeson recorded a poem Langston Hughes wrote about the train that is presented here along with a 1957 concert Robeson, accompanied by pianist Alan Booth, gave over transatlantic cable for the South Wales Miners. Robeson, who spoke 20 languages, sings one song in Welsh. A highlight is the Welsh Treorchy Male Voice Choir serenading Robeson with "We'll Keep a Welcome in the Hillside." There is some static on the recording, but not enough to obscure Robeson's magnificent performance. --Stanley BoothCustomer Reviews:
Extraordinary Privilege to own this rare recording!.......2001-08-06
A Chance to Eavesdrop on an Extraordinary Occasion.......1998-08-11
For those who aren't familiar with the history, the well-written program notes tell the story of Paul Robeson and how he was blacklisted in the US, had a career in Britain where he met up with and made a film about the South Wales coal miners, and how the State Department froze his passport and wouldn't let him leave the country for a number of years, not even to perform at this singing festival in Wales.
The trans-Atlantic phone cable was new on the scene, so the festival organizers arranged for Paul Robeson to "appear" by telephone. The CD includes the introduction by the organizer, selections by Paul Robeson, and selections by a Welsh choir, singing for him. In the final selection, the audience of 5,000 people in Wales sings, "We'! ll Keep A Welcome in the Valleys" - a very poignant selection under the circumstances.
The recording of the concert was made on the Welsh side, with Mr. Robeson's voice coming through the phone wire, so the quality of the recording may not satisfy some listeners. Still, the power of Mr. Robeson's voice comes across loud and clear, as does the emotion of the occasion.
This is a must for Welsh-Americans and African-Americans, as well as anyone who wants to see what the US government was capable of doing to its citizens back in the Cold War days.

Gibbons: Hosanna To The Son Of David
Manufacturer: Conifer ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B0000024DO Release Date: 1995-06-13 |
Amazon.com
The church music of Orlando Gibbons always maintains such civility and refinement, and yet the strength and character of its melodies and the inventiveness of the imitative passages prevent any hint of routine or formula. The anthems on this disc--all 18 of them--show the highest order of compositional skill in the management of voices, occasionally accompanied by viols or organ. A few stand out as masterpieces, especially the verse anthems "Praise the Lord," with its magnificent writing for high trebles, and "See, the Word Is Incarnate," with its wonderful variety of textures and expressive effects. Of course the well-known "This Is the Record of John" and "Almighty and Everlasting God" are included, along with several lesser-known full and verse anthems. The Trinity College Choir is simply superb--make that matchless--in this repertoire. --David Vernier
