Tyrone Davis hit No. 1 on the R&B chart and broke the Pop Top 5 with two slices of incandescent Chicago soul, "Can I Change My Mind" (1968) and "Turn Back the Hands of Time" (1970). Soaked in regret, the singles matched the Mississippi native's deep-blue vocal style with sophisticated arrangements. Included with those classics on the first half of this collection are more examples of the brew, which also produced knockouts like "Turning Point" and the epic "I Had It All the Time." Davis left the indie Dakar/Brunswick firm in the mid-'70s for Columbia; The Best's handful of tracks from this era isn't as dazzling, but does feature three more high-charting records. His return to smaller labels produced '80s hits that brought his blues roots back toward the front of the mix. My mistake, I accidentally ordered the wrong CD. But if this was the "Best of", I'm glad I never heard the regular Tyrone stuff. Anybody want a CD that has never even been played in its entirety?

Excellent from a true "old schooler".......2005-11-02

My personal favorite from Tyrone Davis was "Are You Serious" - this was during my early high school years. I remember playing the album over and over on the old Curtis Mathes component system. This CD turned me on to other great TD tunes that are a little before my time. This CD is worth getting if you really appreciate a genuine Southern soul voice, that can easily crank out sultry ballads (i.e. "In the Mood") as well as nice dance hits ("Hands of Time"). Other personal favorites are

"I Had it All the Time"
"Give it Up, Turn it Loose"

I bought this CD for my dad's birthday, but I may need to order another copy because I'm currently listening to it as I type. A Very good cd, from start to finish. This took me back to my childhood. A must have for Soul Music fans-every song is good. Highly recommended.

Nice Soul and Funk by Tyrone Davis.......2007-04-08

Tyrone Davis has a neat voice. My favorite track by far is 1979's "In The Mood," what a nice, smooth and uplifting track; as a rap fan, I noticed the sample used by MC Eiht and DJ Slip for the 1994 G-Funk classic: "All For The Money," which turned me on to this song. He has some disco inflected tracks, which I am not a big fan of, but this cat can hold many a slow and mid-tempo jam. "Heart Failure" is a nice slow jam for the hunnies. "Ain't Nothing I Can Do" is another slow to mid tempo soul scorcher with a nice funky beat and nice rhythm. I am mainly a rap feind, but I can appreciate a good soul jam. This collective is a nice intro to Tyrone Davis. Nice to cruise to on a sunny day or when chillin with ya girl!

An unsung chapter........2006-02-02

These songs were all recorded during the second half of the 1980s for the tiny Future label. Overall, the material is quite strong and Tyrone turns in some very powerful and seductive performances. Given the fact that most of these songs got relatively little airplay when originally issued on vinyl, this CD celebrates an unsung and underexposed chapter of Tyrone's career. Recommended.

This is my pimp soundtrack when I'm driving at night through NYC or getting my Mack on you dig? I love this album. This is 70's soul at it's finest.

The best from his Columbia years........2004-03-20

Tyrone's Columbia releases were among his most memorable. Producer Leo Graham gave this great singer some truly choice songs that ran the gamut from scorching, slow-burn ballads to disco grooves. While only "In The Mood" became a major hit all of these tracks are excellent examples of smooth 1970s and '80s soul from a truly underrated and underappreciated master singer. An excellent choice for a romantic dinner for two. All of Davis' Columbia LPs deserve to be reissued on CD.

I like this guy, but the titles are wrong.......2003-08-06

There are 15 titles on this CD, but there are only 3 listed & they are wrong. So, don't judge this CD by the few titles. It's an excellant CD, & I would suggest anyone who likes southern soul to get it.
