One of the best soul albums of the '70s owes its success to two men. First, there's Philippe Wynne, the sweet-voiced lead tenor who joined the Spinners not long before the album was recorded in 1972. And second, there's Thom Bell, the songwriter, producer, and arranger who, at Philly International, had already worked with the O'Jays and the Blue Notes. This historic teaming resulted in the soul-pop smashes "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love," "One of a Kind (Love Affair)," and "Ghetto Child," each of them matching Wynne's sweet leads with Bell's lush and delicate, but always deep-in-the-groove, arrangements. --David Cantwell

Although their first album appeared in the early '60s, it was with 1975's "They Just Can't Stop It (Games People Play)" that the Spinners really got moving. They emerged as one of the poppiest of the '70s soul bands, which cost them dearly in credibility. But their best songs were stunning--and by the time original vocalist Philippe Wynne left the group, in 1977, they'd racked up enough successes to stuff a greatest-hits package from top to bottom. Atlantic's 1978 "Best of the Spinners" LP was that package, although this release augments it with later hits like "Working My Way Back to You" and "Cupid." Another anthology package, a double-CD released by Atlantic Records, packs in even more, but the essentials are all here. --Gavin McNett

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of one of the best soul groups ever!.......2007-05-27

This is by far the best and cheapest 1 disc collection of The Spinners incredible Discography that I have ever seen, and the inside booklet also includes a nice little narraration of the group themselves.
Where to start with The Spinners themselves? They are incredible, and thru-out quite a few personnel changes they still kept there essance.
If you purchase this, expect to hear a talented gifted lead singer, with a crew of equally talented singers backing him up. Expect Dense instrumentation, much more dense, and plush than most of the Music of this genre at the time. Production wise it pulls influence from both Soul, and Disco, which is an interesting combo, because I hate disco but like Soul, and I LOVE this.
Lyrically they are solid too. The songwriters for The Spinners were in the background, but should not be treated second rate. They had skill... Expect most of the songs to be love songs, but there is other topics. I enjoy the interesting Social Commentary on Poverty and the effect it can have on a childs self esteem on "Ghetto Child".

Simply put, this is a must have for a true Music Collector, or lover. Cop this.

STANDOUT TRACKS:
Quite honestly, sense this is a greatest hits of a great group, I can't choose... Every track is a beuitiful peice of art.

5 out of 5 stars Great if You Only Want One Disc of The Spinners Music.......2007-03-30

I ordered this for my mom. She loves the whole disc thus 5 stars. This is for those who only want one disc of The Spinners very best songs. For these wanting more, get "Definitive Soul", their 2-disc greatest hits which came out (also from Rhino) last year.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation of a great vocal Soul group! .......2007-03-06

Hey, if you never tried to consider Soul music as REAL GOOD MUSIC, give a try to this Spinners' compilation. These guys will make you fall in love with real, good Soul music. Be sure of it!

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of the Spinners.......2007-01-15

These are great tunes done in the particular "Philly" style that we loved then and still do - amazing really how timely they still are - but, maybe I'm just "stuck" in my younger years - still fun. Plus, the Spinners didn't have too much else (to my knowledge) but this is the best.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Spinners- The Best of Motown!!.......2007-01-03

Anyone who loves Motown music MUST have this in their collection!! It really does feature the very best of the Spinners, without a doubt one of the finest groups to come out of Motown. Their harmonies never disappoint and every song makes you want to dance. Buy it today!!!

Such a terrific compilation of songs. Marc Dorsey's rendition of "People Make the World Go Round" gave me goosebumps! That's a good sign. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars Crooklyn feeds the soul.......2005-06-12

This soudtrack means more to me than any other music compilation avaialable. Every song is carefully chosen to speak to the heart and mind of the listener and viewer of the Crooklyn film. It's a compilation of eclectic time-appropriate songs that portray the passion and atmosphere of the time period and culture it represents. The song "Oooh Child" has given me hope and encouragement through many of life's unexpected tragedies, and I appreciate every aspect of the music offered in this CD. I recommend it to anyone that enjoys a somewhat mellow yet passionate style of motown music. This CD is timeless.

4 out of 5 stars Pure rythmic soul.......1999-02-17

Motown at its finest. A collaboration of songs that make you tap your feet and smile. From Ooh Child to ABC, Crooklyn will make you stand up and cheer (even if your driving). So pop in the CD, and stretch out your neck, because there's gonna be a whole lot of bopping to these Motown greats.

PHILLY SOUL AT IT'S FINEST, I LOVE THIS CD! THE ARRANGEMENTS BY THOM BELL
WERE OFF THE CHAIN,I COULD NEVER REPAY YOUR LOVE WAS A BLUE LIGHTS IN THE BASEMENT CLASSIC ,EVERY SONG WAS SMOOTH AS SOFT BUTTER,WHY DON'T WE GET MUSIC LIKE THIS NOW FOLKS ,GOOD STUFF FROM ANOTHER SUPER SOUL GROUP FROM THE 70'S........TIMELESS

5 out of 5 stars Solid.......2007-04-04

I can echo what other reviewers have already stated. This is a solid recording. There is absolutely no filler on this. I don't think downloading would be so popular an option if a CD purchase was guaranteed to yield this kind of quality. Thom Bell did some of his best work here and so did the Spinners.

5 out of 5 stars The Spinners' Atlantic debut remains fresh, vital and timeless to this day........2007-03-01

A fter enduring several years of corporate neglect at Motown, The Spinners signed with Atlantic Records and their chart fortunes changed drastically--for the better. This all-time classic album includes the masterpieces "I'll Be Around", "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love", "I Could Never (Repay Your Love)" and "Ghetto Child" and is rightly regarded as a milestone of 1970s R&B. The Spinners' association with the great Thom Bell would result in some of the best Soul Music ever recorded but this was their first--and best--collaboration.

5 out of 5 stars BOBBIE SMITH .... THE SPINNERS REAL LEAD SINGER !!.......2007-01-13

I've always been one for giving credit where it's due...and in the case of THE SPINNERS, one person gets way TOO MUCH, and another doesn't get NEARLY ENOUGH.That person is the fantastic BOBBIE SMITH. BOBBIE has been the REAL LEAD SINGER OF THE SPINNERS FROM DAY ONE !!! He sang lead on the SPINNERS VERY FIRST HIT BACK IN 1961... ( That's What Girls Are Made For )...and also their first million seller ( "I'll Be Around" ). In between ,he lead virtually ALL of their PRE MOTOWN HITS ("Too Young, Too Much, Too Soon","What Did She Use " ,etc.)and such MOTOWN CLASSICS AS "TRULY YOURS" (my favorite SPINNERS song },"I'LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU "(the group's second biggest Motown hit} ,"SWEET THING",AND TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE SUCH SWEET MUSIC "("IT'S A SHAME WAS LED BY G.C. CAMERON,who couldn't go with the group when they went to ATLANTIC,because he was still under contract to MOTOWN). And SMITH also led THEIR BIGGEST ATLANTIC HITS "COULD IT BE I'M FALLING IN LOVE " ,"GAMES PEOPLE PLAY ","MIGHTY LOVE",(a shared lead} and "THEN CAME YOU"...Yet , Bobbie get's VIRTUALLY NO CREDIT FOR HIS PART IN THE SPINNERS' SUCCESS & ACCOMPLISHMENTS..AND NEVER HAS !! In newspaper & magazine articles, music history books , even in ATLANTIC RECORDS own liner notes... all the credit goes to PHLLIP WALKER {aka PHILLIPPE WYNNE )!! Some music writers have even gone so far as to credit Phillippe for songs BOBBIE ACTUALLY SANG LEAD ON!! While I don't take anything away from Phillippe (he was a fantastic singer & dancer ), the REALITY is that his initial single with the SPINNERS, "HOW COULD I LET YOU GET AWAY"(which he sang lead on), ONLY REACHED #77 ON THE BILLBOARD pop chart! It was only after the nations' disc jockeys TURNED THE RECORD OVER TO IT'S FLIP SIDE,"I'LL BE AROUND" which BOBBIE SMITH sang lead on,, that the group had it's FIRST MILLION SELLER !! BOBBIE ALSO SANG LEAD ON THE GROUP'S SECOND MILLION SELLER, " COULD IT BE I'M FALLING IN LOVE ".By the time their 1st ATLANTIC ALBUM'S 3rd single , the WYNNE- lead "ONE OF A KIND LOVE AFFAIR" came out, (which also sold a million ),the two SMITH -LED SONGS had already established the SPINNERS as SUPERSTARS,and propelled the sales of that album to GOLD RECORD STATUS. The fact is that while PHILLIPE was hopping and skipping across the stage, driving audiences wild ,it was BOBBIE SMITH that was selling all the records,WYNNE having led on only one other million seller, the fun and funny novelty song "RUBBERBAND MAN "(Most of the WYNNE-led tunes were bigger on the R&B charts than on the POP. BOBBIE also sang lead (with DIONNE WARWICK}, on the million-selling # 1 smash,"THEN CAME YOU", and another million seller "GAMES PEOPLE PLAY".(Can you believe MOTOWN rejected his voice ? BIG MISTAKE !!) However , Wynne's powerful performance of "I COULD NEVER REPAY YOUR LOVE " was also a highlight of their INCREDIBLE FIRST ATLANTIC ALBUM,many radio stations having played the song right off the album.Sadly, Wynne's DAVID RUFFIN-LIKE attitude , demanding TOP BILLING, and causing turmoil within the group, and with their producer,THOM BELL,threatened to tear the SPINNERS apart. But the SPINNERS existed long before PHILLIPPE WYNNE,and they still exist today.....And,GUESS WHAT? BOBBIE SMITH is still their lead singer. It's time HE got the credit he deserves.

It's the Spinners - Mightly Love - a great disc - timeless, too! Five stars!!

5 out of 5 stars Ty bess(the music man).......2006-11-06

This was the album that made people stand up and take notice. After the mega hits on their debut album the spinners along with the mighty three production team released mighty love a very powerful tune that started the fire.the gems are the rest of the album i,m glad you walked into my life can be played today along with the rest of this cd.this was,is,and will always be a cd you can put on and let it do it,s magic.Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Mighty Love.......2006-11-03

Now this one I wouldd give 10 stars if I could for the song "Love Don't Love Nobody" by itself. This was one of their best. Let's not forget the title song "Mighty Love", because that we had back in the day. And always remember "I'm Coming Home" and "He'll Never Love You Like I Do". Fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Real Soul Music.......2006-08-29

This is an excellent recording of some of the best Soul Music. Real Soul Music. Not any of that watered-down, synthesized-helper stuff that tries to pass for Soul Music. The sound quality is suberb, but most importantly the music is exceptional.

Under the steady hand of producer, arranger, and composer Thom Bell, the Spinners hit their stride in the mid-1970s, when Phillipe Wynne's mellifluous tenor led them to the pinnacle of luxurious Philly soul. This 1975 album celebrates love found, laments love lost, and pledges love again while the smooth vocals and rich orchestrations punctuate the message. "Games People Play" became a huge hit with its poetic lyrics and a female "character" answering Wynne's queries. The defiant "Love or Leave" and "All That Glitters Ain't Gold" add elements of funk and disco, providing contrast to the sweeter, string-heavy ballads. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Detroit Spinners!.......2006-05-28

Without a doubt, this was the best album The Detroit Spinners made. The writing, the singing and the musical arrangement for this album was superb. This group is sadly missed. One of the best albums of the Seventies!

5 out of 5 stars Another classic album by The Spinners & Thom Bell.......2003-10-18

This is one of the best smooth soul albums I've ever heard. It sounds great even today and it is one of the most accomplished albums by the great musical team The Spinners + Thom Bell. This is sweet, timeless Philly Soul.

5 out of 5 stars Phillippe "Soul" Wynne is truly missed, R.I.P........2002-09-08

This is what soul should sound like, thought-provoking lyrics, beautiful orchestrated production, and LIVE instrumentation. Of The (Detroit) Spinners big 3 albums, "Mighty Love", the self-titled one, and "Pick of the Litter", this one is usually considered the weakest, but I disagree, there isn't a single throwaway track on this album. Of course the hit "(They just can't stop it)Games People Play" is on here, but you also get the funky "Love or Leave", the tear-jerking brutal honesty of "Sweet Love of Mine", and the two ballads "You Made a Promise to Me" and "I Don't Want to Lose You" are standouts in themselves. The Essence of Philly Soul, in my arrogant opinion, soul at its zenith.

Despite hailing from Detroit, the Spinners had only sporadic success as a Motown act, most notably with the Stevie Wonder-produced "It's a Shame." But with the early-'70s addition of Philippe Wynne as lead singer and new associations with Atlantic Records and producer Thom Bell, the group was transformed into one of the decade's key soul acts. With Wynne's gorgeous voice and ever-inventive improvisations riding Bell's smooth tracks, the Spinners made deathless single after deathless single while also committing must-own LPs like the self-titled one that featured "I'll Be Around." A One of a Kind Love Affair charts the great career of an outfit with truckloads of both R&B and pop credibility. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars It's a reason Rhino is the best at reissues and compliations and this comp shows why........2006-08-17

I can't think of anything wrong with this set.The song selection is excellent, the sound quality is superb. The liner notes are...you get the ideal! It's just that good.Just look at the song listing and keep in mind that all these songs are in their full length/album versions. No chippy choppy single/radio edits here.If Phillipe Wynne was alive now,he'd even say "Damn! We were bad weren't we?" Thanks to Rhino records for showing yet again how a complation should be done.

4 out of 5 stars Good Career Overview.......2006-08-12

Here's a good retrospective of the highlights of one of the most highly-talented aggregations in the annals of R&B/Popular music. Most 'old skool' music listeners know the Spinners' output well, as their releases from "It's A Shame" onward through most of the Atlantic Records albums and singles are now considered as true classics, ranking with the best music of the period. What you get here; besides the hits and some of their best album tracks, is a fascinating insight, via the well-written liner notes, into the progression of their storied career - both the 'ups' and the 'downs' - and a better understanding of what made for an exceptional combination of songwriters; singers and record producer/arranger with the Thom Bell connection. Philippe' Wynne is almost legendary as a singer and this package takes you from the early Motown sides before the 'Soul' man came on board thru the rest of their best years. Most longtime fans rejoice because all of their releases from the Atlantic period can now be obtained on CD, which makes for even better listening with the smooth rhythms, lush orchestrations and quality recording productions that still are hallmarks of what many believe are the greatest years of creative musical output in American music. If you can't afford to re-buy all the original works, then get this solid collection and you'll have more than enough to keep your soul satisfied! Hats 'off ' to Rhino, as well, for again doing the reissue thing the right way, as they always do.

5 out of 5 stars If you love the Spinners this is it.......2005-12-10

If you are a Spinners nut like I am, you will be very satisfied with this cd. Even though a couple of songs I would have added does not appear( Cupid and a beautiful song called Just to be with you) I strongly recommend this anthology of hits. This group I feel was very under rated and almost got lost in the Motown experience. This is a group that should be ranked up there with the temptations, Four Tops and the Dells. Also Phillipe Wynne is one of the most soulful and talented singers ever. I am so sorry we could not enjoy him a little longer, RIP. I also enjoyed reading the background on them and their past and last lead singers. This is an awesome cd, so I suggest you go out and get it for your musical library.

I love the Spinners. But good material is hard to write. While not everything on this CD set is that wonderful - with a few of these songs being mediocre (but not the performances, their musical standard is very high) - the good stuff is as good as it gets in music, period.

These are the best ones -

It's A Shame
How Could I Let You Get Away
Could It Be I'm Falling In Love
I Could Never (Repay Your Love)
I'm Coming Home
Heaven on Earth (So Fine)
Easy Come, Easy Go
If You Wanna Do a Dance (All Night)

5 out of 5 stars TY BESS (THE MUSIC MAN).......2006-12-23

I love this cd,the main reason why is because you hear the spinners sing no female background singers on this one.Sadie is very well done live by mr wynn and the super song mighty love you can feel the energy comming off the track great work!.One thing though the classic love don,t love nobody could have been mix better without the fade.A scale from 1-10 it is a 10 enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars The Spinners with the Immortal Phillipe Wynne - Live !.......2006-12-10

I saw The Spinners with the great Phillipe Wynne in a small venue in the DC area in late 70's, and this album/CD captures their live performance. Now that Mr. Wynne has passed, we can only enjoy his preacher like singing "live " on this album. Sadie and Mighty Love will bring tears to your eyes and you won't be able to resist singing along while dancing. I have the album, all used up and scratched from playing it so much over the years. My kids, now adults, loved this group too. I'm buying the CD so I can once again go back to that great show, which also had the beautiful Miss Nancy Wilson performing too! What a treat that was!

3 out of 5 stars Great Live Performance by a Great R&B Group.......2005-10-14

The Spinners at their best, singing one hit after another and a few lesser-known but nonetheless worthwhile tunes as well. Their live performance is energetic and the quality of the recording is exceptional, picking up all the harmonies and subtle tonal ranges sometimes lost outside of a studio. A great CD for Spinner fans as well as a great intro into one of the best R&B groups of the 1970s-80s. Two pet peeves though: 1. The number in which they impersonate other singers is distracting. 2. There's a fade in, fade out right between one of the songs. This is from the original LP when one side of a "live concert" record "filled up" even though a song wasn't over. It's too bad that couldn't have been eliminated on the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Captures the essence and excitement of a Spinners concert.......2002-01-12

If you've seen the Spinners in concert, this is it! They're tremendous entertainers and are really warm to the crowd. Plus, their vocals are always top notch and their backup band is always tight.

On this CD, they bring it all home. "One of a Kind (Love Affair)" and "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love" soar with faster renditions. Phillipe Wynne does some excellent imitations of Al Green, Sam Cooke and Otis Redding on "How Could I Let You Get Away," and "Sadie" and "Love Don't Love Nobody" smooth out the album as long ballads.

The Spinners are my favorite group and I usually just drop five stars on their albums. This one, in my opinion, has a flaw in the Medley of Superstars. It's unique in that you hear the Spinners do other acts, like Tom Jones, Diana Ross and the Supremes and Elvis Presley. I guess in the old days they even wore wigs when imitating the Supremes! That must have been fun and I think that's what they were trying to capture here. However, since we don't have the visual, I would've rather heard some of their many other great songs like, "I'm Coming Home," "Ghetto Child," "It's a Shame," and "I'll Be Around."

Despite those omissions, this album stands up with the best of any live production. If you like great vocals and exciting tunes, get this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Spinners Live.......2000-07-19

The single most reason to buy this album is to hear Phillipe Wynne impersonate Otis Redding and Al Greene on the cut "I've Got To Make It On My Own." I bought the release on a double vinyl album almost 25 years ago (you remember albums...those thin wide black wax frisbees with the tiny hole in the middle) and it's become worn out from me playing it so much. "Love Don't Love Nobody" does a fadeout as the last cut on side 3 and I have to flip it over to finish hearing it. I'm gonna buy the CD to hear them sing "Sady" and to listen to Phillipe improvise without all the pops and scratches. The band is tight, the sound is rich, the harmony is smooth and the selected cuts are strong. Besides this being their only released live recordings it's also one of their best albums. It's a definite must for any Spinners fan.

4 out of 5 stars Ty bess (the music man).......2006-12-12

This is our fork in the road(a line from ill be around)phillippe wynn was leaving the group thinking he could go solo.poor john edwards ask to fill in and sing like him on spinners 8 album.Dont get me wrong the happiness
album was very good if you can,t be in love is truly a classic. Also the spinners 8 album cuts like you got the love i need, and back in the arms of love are worth a buy.But this is where things got off track the album between these two(yesterday, today & tomorrow)was mr wynn at his best. It,s funny there is a song that album called throwing a good love away i think mr bell and the rest of the spinners was trying to tell mr wynn something.I love the spinners this was a hard cd to except but being a true fan i had to have it.enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Happiness Is Listening To This Stuff.......2005-04-27

If you want pure mid 70's Philly soul magic The Spinners are great ones for that. And certainly the funky "Rubberband Man" and "I'm Gonna Get You" are fantastic, brilliant tunes but neither of these albums are consistant.Between the two the upbeat "Wake Up Susan",the wistful "Heaven On Earth (So Fine)" are great tunes but the ultimate Spinners CD collection to get is 'One Of A Kind Love Affair'-it's packed full of great hits and album cuts from their entire 70's career.Much of the time The Spinners weren't really great album acts (say for 1979's consistantly strong 'From Here To Eternally')and these two are certainly no different.I think Philly thought of them as more of singles act and produced them as such. But these guys have wonderful voices and should've been developed in a different way at this point. If they had I think both these albums would've done alot better

3 out of 5 stars A lot of paint, no magic.......2001-11-04

The Thom Bell magic wanes a bit on Happiness is Being w/ Spinners. The album opens with the light hearted and lyrically banal 'Now That We're Together',a showcase for Henry Fambrough who gets more lead time than usual.
The LP version of 'the Rubberband Man' is flippant and dancible, and the jazzy 'Toni My Love' is pure Philly-soul heaven.
Spinners#8 is more style than substance, and although new comer John Edwards has his way with 'Heaven On Earth(So Fine),Phillippe
Wynne's personality is greatly missed.(He went solo in 1977.)

5 out of 5 stars BOBBIE SMITH... THE SPINNERS' REAL LEAD SINGER !!.......2006-10-08

3 out of 5 stars At Their Best.......2006-02-25

What do the songs It's a shame,Just you and me baby,Love has gone away and Ghetto child have in common? They are songs made famous buy one of the best r&b groups to come out of Detroit 'The Spinners'. After looking for a few months trying to find a greatest hits collection. I finally found this one and even though it may not be perfect it's still a very good one. The Spinners Chrome Collection is a three disk compilation that covers the years 1961 thur 1989. Disk 1 what they call 'Together We Can Make Such Sweet Music' contains some of the spinners early work. And covers the years 1961 thur 1974. I ready didn't become a spinners fan until the Thom Bell 1973 thur 1979 -Philippe Soul Wynne 1971 thur 1977 years. And those years don't kick in until the middle of disk 1 and continues into the beginning of disk 3. With the help of producer and arranger Thom Bell and the songwriteing talents of Jefferson,Hawes and Simmons the spinners with Philippe Wynn,Henry Fambrough,Billy Henderson,Pervis Jackson and Bobby Smith. And with hits like Since I been gone,There's no one like you,Could it be I'm falling in love and I'm coming home. The spinners were 'Sitting on top of the world'. Disk 2 is called 'Sitting On Top Of The World' and picks up where disk 1 leaves off and covers the years 1974 thur 1977. To me this is the best disk the songs on disk 2 are r&b classic songs that were the life of the party in the early seventies. Now I've already mention Thom Bell. But there was one other person that made the spinners such a great group. And that person was Mr Philippe Soul Wynne with his extraordinary tenor voice he was the heart and soul of the spinners. Disk 1&2 demonstrate his enormous influence in the group. Songs like Sade,The Rubberband Man and Love Don't Love Nobody are some of the greatest perfromances in r&b history. Unfortunately Mr Wynne left the spinners in 1977 and left this world in 1984. The music world truly misses his talent. Also on disk 2 is a song the spinners did with Dionne Warwicke 'Then Came You' that became a big hit. As we enter the last disk #3 called 'If You Wanna Do A Dance'covers the years 1977 thur 1989. On this disk there's very little of Mr Bell and no Mr Wynne and it shows in the music. Disk 3 does have a few good songs on it but for the most part a certain spark is missing. A spark that was evident on the first two disk. But this is still a great set and a must have for any spinner fan. Also 'The Spinners Chrome Collection' comes with a good booket. Filled with information about the group

5 out of 5 stars Slightly begrudgingly given 5 stars.......2004-03-30

With twenty-nine top 100 pop chart entries spanning over twenty years, the Spinners have finally received a truly worthwhile box set treatment. Here is an outstanding CD collection of the group assembling three discs with 62 tracks in excellent sound quality overall, an extraordinary set of liner notes and discography, lots of pics and illustrations and populated with singles and album cuts with including all their hits... almost. Therein lies the rub however, in that in Rhino's all-too-common extradinarily annoying practice of leaving off one, just one, charting single, the Spinners' second pop charting entry, "Love (I'm So Glad I Found You)" is absent. With three discs here, there is plenty of room for this one additional track and without it, unlike the claim within the set, this does not include ALL the hits. A very minor fault in the scheme of things here but nevertheless, especially for collectors, a seemingly unnecessary compilation misstep. To further split hairs but in the interest of absolute truth here, the version of "Sadie" here is a "new edit" and why it was felt necessary to stray from the original here is unclear. Nitpicking aside, this remains the ultimate Spinners collection available and for the fan wanting a bit more than the usual greatest-hits skimming, this is a superbly constructed set and at this time, the best available, bar none.

5 out of 5 stars What a set!.......2004-01-01

I just received my Chrome in the mail and feel like I've died and gone to heaven. Oh yeah, all the goods are here, "It's a Shame," "Could it be I'm falling in Love," "One of a Kind (Love Affair)," "Mighty Love," "I'll Be Around," "Then Came You," and on and on and on. Plus there are plenty of fantastic non-hit album cuts such as "Toni My Love," and "He'll Never Love You Like I Do."

It's all here! The early Motown stuff, the late dance stuff including "Cupid" and "Working My Way Back to You," and thankfully the ENTIRE "Spinners" album from Atlantic, all 10 blockbusters including the aforementioned "One of a Kind," "I'll Be Around," "Could It Be ..." plus "Ghetto Child," and other gems.

Wow, Rhino did it right -- the whole nine yards and then some. The packaging is top notch, great photos and the box is very nice.

One of the highlights is the 60-page booklet, with some truly excellent writing featuring some interesting anecdotes even I, a Spinners fanatic, hadn't heard before. The notes about how Thom Bell produced the group are priceless.

Despite all the hits, The Spinners remain one of the most underrated groups of all time. They truly are one of the top groups ever and this collection proves this. If you like smooth grooves, tremendous singing, impeccable production (no drum machines here, it's the REAL stuff!), and just feel good music, the Chrome Collection is for you.

This is by far the best CD collection I've bought in years -- perhaps ever -- and I can't recommend it enough.
