Amazon.com essential recording
James Brown's status as one of the hottest live performers translated into a string of absolutely massive in-concert albums, but none are better than this outrageously funky outing. This is the only live CD available with Bootsy Collins and the original JB's posse, and Brown leads the incendiary ensemble through an airtight set. Only "Georgia on My Mind" reaches for the dimmer switch, but the point by then is immaterial coming after the ridiculous onslaught of "Brother Rapp" and "Ain't It Funky Now"--try to find the impossible seam between those two tracks. A hazardous slipstream of soul! --John Corbett

5 out of 5 stars Whe God throws a party, this is what He plays.......2007-06-25

The first few minutes of "Ain't It Funky Now" and "Give It Up" are the Rosetta Stone of what it means to make a funky sound. It just don't get no funkier.
Paris sure got it goin' on; this is yet another killing live show from the town that makes everyone play at the outer limits of their abilities.
I took the funkiest tracks from this and the Dallas '68 JB cd and put them together on my mp3 player for running, and I can blow out mile after mile without even noticing; take out the ballads and those shows are like a lightning bolt.
The Maceo JB band was super tight, and this band was super rubbery. Both were extreme Funk, inventing the genre as they went. No one has come close to this day; this is the fonk from the Source itself.
JB was the original black power superstar, and in 1971 he was a true revolutionary. That power fairly crackles throughout this recording, and when it busts loose on Ain't It Funky, New Day, Sex Machine and Give It Up, there is an almost mystical energy created, like the sound a sperm might make when it beats the pack of a hundred million and slides in to the egg first.
Bootsy is 19 here (!!!), and he and his brother Phelps bring a loping intensity that has never been equalled; this may be the funkiest bass playing ever captured on tape. I've loved JB since hearing Brand New Bag in grade school, and always knew there must be a live recording that captured the essence of him at this funkiest.
Here it is.
James' voice wavers at points (ten shows in six days in Paris, just another stand in yet another town...hardest workin' man in show biz indeed), but his energy and conviction drive his band to the height of heights, funktually speaking.
Just program Ain't It Funky on your cd player to wake you up. You WILL get up and dance in the shower.
Good God!

5 out of 5 stars The greatest album ever recorded - period.......2007-05-08

I first heard this album played in its entirety on a local soul radio station in New Orleans on New Year's Day in 1996. I was hanging out at a friend's apartment in an old acadian-style house just a few blocks from Tipitinas. The DJ was taking phone calls from listeners who were calling in with their New Year's resolutions. I remember on old gentleman calling in saying "from now on, I'm only going to drink when I'm by myself or when I'm wit somebody". The driving funk of James Brown live in the background was totally infectious! None of us could sit still - we danced and spun and jumped around until we were all breathless and falling down on the floor laughing. Just when we thought we were going to get a break, JB would plow into another crazy energized funk masterpiece, and we were on our feet again, dancing like maniacs - even the people who would normally never dream of dancing with anyone watching. We headed over to the quarter later that day and I found "Love Power Peace" on CD. I had some older James Brown on CD - live at the Apollo, etc. - but THIS was something different. "Love Power Peace" has been my favorite CD of any kind of music ever since. I was fortunate to see James Brown live in concert a couple of years later (I remember seeing him perform on TV as a young child and loved him even then). We listened to "Love Power Peace" all the way to the show and all the way home. The energy and music of "Love Power Peace" IS James Brown. Everybody should own this album.

5 out of 5 stars This tops even your highest expectations.......2007-01-13

Usually for a superstar musician, when archivists uncover some sort of "lost tape" of a show, they will hype it up as the greatest thing EVER. They will make you think that this long lost recording will blow your mind, and will affirm everything that you ever loved about the artist. Invariably, this is NEVER the case. I don't care how big the artist is, I have seen so many Lost Tape Letdowns, I can't even name them all. Miles Davis, Dylan, Beatles, BB King, Zeppelin, Coltrane, Blakey - yes the best of the best have fallen in this regard. Sometimes it makes you wonder, are these guys as good as I thought they were??? Are they a sham???

But guess what? James Brown has Soul to spare. He has Soul to burn. He always did and always will, even in heaven. And when you uncover a Prime Era James Brown Tape, it will NOT disappoint. That is 100% guaranteed. He refuses to lose. When you hear Love Power Peace, you will find everything you love James Brown for, and more. When you play this album, you will be shocked that anyone could have as futuristic sound as the James Brown band had in 1971, even though you have heard this said a million times already. When you think about this show, you will think you would have given practically any material possession you own just to have been there. That's what I still feel. When you think about Phelps' solo, you will rack your brain to come up with any solo in any genre of music including jazz with as much energy, creativity and FUNK as this one. You will wonder how he never had 10 albums of his own.

When you hear LOVE POWER PEACE, you will feel the full force of the James Brown Experience. This Experience was honed with loving skill for almost 20 years before this show. There are few musical artists in the history of the world who can live up to their hype, their Legend, their Ego. James Brown is one of the few, perhaps the one.

5 out of 5 stars ALWAYS REMEMBER JAMES BROWN.......2007-01-13

Since the great has passed on, I figured I would review the cream of the crop from the James Brown catalouge. Recently I reviewed "Say It Live And Loud", another favorite of mine. That particularly is way up there on my faves list, due to the fact that the band in '68 was so damned tight and proffesional, with the man, Maceo movin' the orchestra along. Arguably James Browns best band was that one. Huge. But in 1969, Maceo demanded more money for any futher services, and with just an hour before showtime, James Brown told him to take a hike and called up two kids that had jammed with some chick he was banging at the time... Bootsy and Catfish Collins. They pulled the show out of thin air, which pissed off the crowd that night, who were obviously expecting the tightness and precision that the James Brown Orchestra had come to be known for. What they got was the loose hooks and rythms of the brothers collins, and the beggining of something new... funk.
This is the only live recording of James Brown with Bootsy (he would soon help the Parliament Funkadelic take off) and it shows that James Brown didn't need to rely on his big old orchestra to make good music. In fact, these days, Soul brother number one, is probably better known for what he did after ditching the big band and just jamming loosely wih a couple of stanky funkateers.
This disc is almost the opposite of what Say it Live and Loud is about, but yet still as good and still as powerful. The job gets more than just done here, its louder and grittier than ever. If you are looking for James Brown funk, this is your best place to start.

5 out of 5 stars This Is The $#!+!!!!!!.......2006-11-01

Few albums get me as pumped up as LOVE POWER PEACE (RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE is up there). This stuff is so powerful, so hyperkinetic . . . the heavy funk tracks are very uptempo - it's the funkiest funk I've ever heard. I don't even care to hear the slower original studio tracks after grooving on this. Truthfully, I could do without the screaming, or maybe I'd like it better if it wasn't so loud in the mix because I play this stuff LOUD . . . but I just roll with it ya know? Cause James Brown's feelin' it . . . caught up in the exstacy . . . oh, to have been at this show!

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-05

This is a really good representation of 20th century hymn tunes sung by a typical British Choir made up of boy sopranos, male altos and the usual number of tenors and basses. The choir sings very well using good diction and appropriate interpretation. The arrangements are varied, different groups of voices singing parts of a hymn usually alternating and eventually the full choir joins in; nothing unusual in the arrangements themselves. There is a nice variety of hymns, some more interesting than others. I will comment on a few of them as follows:
The opening hymn:'Christ, triumphant, ever reigning' is a good opener in that it is quick and begins with the boy sopranos and immediately gets your attention. John Barnard's majestic 'Guiting Power' tune sweeps the words up in a wide-ranging,flowing melody that creates from them a fine hymn.
'I, the Lord of sea and sky(Here I am, Lord) is a truly striking hymn! The words of this song begin with a proclamation in the verses; this is answered in the refrain by the singer's commitment to service. This is reflected in the tune. The melody for the verses has a vigorous movement to proclaim the work of God in creation, His continuing love for that creation, and His call for service. Both the words and music are by the American Jesuit musician Daniel L. Schutte, who has served both on college campuses and in parish ministry.
'All My Hope On God Is Founded' the tune of which is written by Herbert Howells and is called 'Michael'in memory of his son who died in childhood. It is a lovely melody and the words suit it very well.
The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams was the music editor of the 'English Hymnal'. The most widely used of his own tunes was the 'Monk's Gate' which he created from a folk tune. It is subtly contrived, as the rhythm of the alleluias shows. 'Sine nomine' simply means without a name. The resulting hymn is 'For All the Saints'.

The Wells Cathedral Choir under the direction of Malcolm Archer accompanied by Rupert Gough on the organ have produced an excellent disc.

I bought this collection because I saw the song, Here I Am, Lord written by Daniel Schutte. I grew up singing this song and many other pieces from the St. Louis Jesuits and this continues to be one that has deep meaning for me. In addition, the other pieces in this collection are very enjoyable to listen to, not only for worship but for time of reflection.

After the Anglican Communion, particularly the American branch, has completed its transformation from a church to a political-social club, at least it will be remembered for two things: the beautiful and influential language of its Book of Common Prayer (1662) and its wonderful music. The English Hymn, volume 1, is a promising start to another English music series by Hyperion. This series complements Hyperion's English Anthems series, its Psalms at St. Paul's (many volumes of Anglican chant), and its two-CD collection of "Mags and Nuncs" (My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord and My Spirit Hath Rejoiced). Volume 1, "Christ Triumphant," features hymns written in the 20th century. The styles of the hymns range from confident, pre-Great War, "God is an Englishman" roof-raisers to insipid, happy-clappy jingles, which inadvertently, I assume, parallel the decline of the church. The Wells Cathedral Choir sings with gusto and, typical of Hyperion, the sound quality is excellent. My only disappointment came when the CD ended - is this all there is to the 20th century? I hope Hyperion plans to include more than one volume on the 20th century in this series. If you enjoy this type of music, you will be satisfied with this CD. If you have CDs from the other series listed above, the English Hymn, vol. 1, and a programmable, carousel-CD player, now you can click your heels and transport yourself to Evensong at King's College, Cambridge, or St. Paul's, London!

3 out of 5 stars great soundtrack, but lacking satisfaction.......2007-05-29

Vampire Princess Miyu is a great show. It has great music too. The music is more background music...to maybe set a mood? but it's not the kind of music you'd listen to with friends. You'd listen to it by yourself. Like the show, the music is depressing. It wouldn't be party music. It has all the vocal songs from the show (which are all in Japanese). If you're the type of person who likes their music loud, this CD isn't for you. If you're the kind of person who likes mellow music to listen to by yourself, this CD may be for you. It's for you to decide.

The price on Amazon for this item at the moment is around $70.00, is the music from that show really worth that much? in my opinion, it's not because i rarely even play the music on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Melody of the Dark.......2004-05-01

As much as I love and am addicted to Japanese animation in general, one thing I look forward to the most is the music heard throughout the episodes and the original score for "Vampire Princess Miyu" is one of the best I've yet to come across. To be honest I have never heard a more beautiful soundtrack in my entire life! Even before I experienced the OVA's and TV series for this amazing show I bought this gorgeous piece of work on a whim and was absolutely blown away! Before this I wasn't familiar with acclaimed composer Kenji Kawai who is best known for "Ghost in the Shell" but I was more than impressed with the atmospheres he created here so I'll gladly pick up anything I see his name on...

With the exception of a couple vocal performances by Saeko Suzuki on "Miyu Forever", Miki Nagasawa on "Temariuta" and Hiroko Kasahara on "I Wanna Meet You", as well as a few others such as "Chase Of The Devil" which is upbeat but slightly darker in mood for it's used for the battle scenes when Miyu and Larva capture the shinma (demons), most of the songs are less than two minutes in length. However, these lush, melancholy tunes make up for that in quality, and there's plenty of quantity with 34 stunning tracks and over 73 minutes worth of traditional Japanese folk music that will captivate and enchant you, just as it did me.

This is highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Haunting Soundtrack.......2004-02-24

How the composer managed to convey the ethereal beauty of Miyu, the complexity of her emotions, or the haunting darkness of her world is beyond me. The CD contains the extended versions of the opening and ending themes of the TV series, which is fantastic. From the first sound of the eerie flute to the rhythmic energy of the Japanese drums, the haunting opening theme is what initially captured my attention while watching the episodes for the first time. It was the primary reason why I purchased the CD-- yes, I thought the theme song alone was worth the price. And I have to say, I'm not disappointed.

There are only three vocal tracks on this CD, tracks 9, 23, and 34. "I wanna meet you" (track 9) is a beautiful song that expresses the nostalgic longing of love. Tenderly sung, it brought unexpected memories of childhood sweethearts and summer days. A very unexpected and pleasant surprise in a series that's known for its dark, gothic themes.

"Temariuta" (track 23) is a haunting counting song more in line with what I expected from the series. The sound of Miyu's voice being echoed by the delicate children's chorus was like hearing the ghosts of the past carrying across the darkness of time. Spooky, but oddly inspiring. Don't ask me how.

While the vocal tracks are very well done, it's the excellent instrumental music that captures the raw emotion of the series. Certainly the opening theme is a good example, and deservedly so, but my favorite is the "Tragedy of Female Fighter" (Track 26). It's short, only two minutes in length, but as another reviewer (Jen L.) had noted about the piece, it perfectly captures the "nostalgia, sorrow, and steely resolve reflecting that of the girl who seeks revenge on the Shinma who murdered her family."

I highly recommend this anime soundtrack to any fan of the series, and especially to those who enjoy listening to instrumental pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, haunting Japanese music........2003-02-22

This is some of the best anime music I've heard in a long time. Its haunting with the flute, and beautiful for it shows Miyu's emotions right through. The vocal tracks are extremely good as well. To hear a voice with the intruments (ack, spelling) makes it even more haunting.
