Singer-songwriter Kina seems well past waiting for stardom to come her way; three of the first four tracks on her self-titled debut album concern themselves with the subject either in full or in passing. One of them, "Girl from the Gutter," began to win her fans through video and radio even before this disc's release, so at some point she might be able to stop wishing. If
Kina indeed ends up a hit, however, it won't be because of anything particularly special about its contents. Although blessed with a strong, soulful voice, Kina displays little knack for saying anything interesting; aside from her dreams of fame, she fills these songs with pedestrian declarations of love and (on "U Don't Know") claims of her unpredictability. Finally, Kina's straight-down-the-middle production sets the artist down in tracks that sound like an unholy meld of Sting's empty lushness and Melissa Etheridge's bland heartland rock. Come to think of it, the narcissism of tunes like "Stop" and "Me" makes that the perfect sonic blend for her.

LOVE IT.......2007-04-12
I love this CD! Kina is incredible! I can't believe I haven't seen anything from her since this album!!! She's just great!
where is kina?.......2006-03-23
every so often i'll go online and submit a search looking for Kina. i think the industry is unusually harsh on most talented vocalists and musicians alike. moreso than commenting on how much i love her debut album ( i play it so much and never tire of it)what bothers me is her absence. will she put out another cd? i hope we hear from her again. i shudder when i think of how many artists we are deprived of due to marketing, fickle sales and competition.
its daunting to know you can be extremely talented and never get noticed. damn shame really.
kina is a versatile artist who could sing anything her heart desired and still send goose bumps down your spine. "still here" makes me cry sometimes, love that song. "girl from the gutter", what more can i say, "have a cry" is poignant and so true sometimes, expressing what we all feel in a world that expects us to immediately pick ourselves up after chummy advice, even when people do mean well. some people criticize some of the subject matter as tiring, c'mon, people will always write, sing, paint, sculpt and sketch these subjects...so universal and timeless.
all i wanna know is...kina where are u?
Don't Fence Her In.......2005-06-13
This cd truly transcends all the boundries in todays music. Kina is'nt afraid of being original. As a former member of the group Brownstone Kina stepped away from that sound and has really let her own true self be heard on this cd. She's got the vocal power of Tina Turner and Chaka. It's a shame the public has'nt ever completely gotten to know Kina's music. I guess a black woman who can rock is just not on todays menu, but for all of us fans she is the daily special. (Smile)
Too many talented people are so overlooked in todays music industry and I'm sick of it. When will it end. Come on industry people we're not all 10-15 year olds who idolize former disney channel kids....
Ooh and also the hidden track at the end of the cd is one of the most haunting and powerful songs I have heard in such a long time. Kina's got it!!!!!
bad bad music a review from kevin f.......2005-06-08

A message and a voice..........2005-04-14
This CD continues to kick my butt every time I listen to it. I've had it since the summer of '00 and from the first single "Girl From the Gutter" I was hooked. The CD was and is completely underated in my opinion, but not suprising. Had I not turned so many of my friends on to this CD, they would have never heard it. Shame on the music industry for pumping out track after track of digitized, morphed, and obscured Britney Spears meanlingless ya-ya, when they have a truely talented songbird going unnoticed. Along with Sarah McLachlan's "Fumbling Toward Ecstasy" and Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill", this is a must have for anyone passionate to learn more about the world of pain, lust, and redemption. You're missing out if you pass this one up. And by the way...does ANYONE know when she's recording a follow up?

Perfect........2004-07-01
If you've enjoyed Carl Orff, this is his legitimate successor.
Nicholas Lens is perfectionism not over but cross professionalism.
This is one of the few CDs these days that you ought to pay
money for. It is really worth every cent.
Expensive!.......2003-11-12
I believe this recording is very good. Still $999.99 for a used copy seems quite expensive. Or $1,002.48 with shipping - as I just found out. Don't you think?
exciting.......2003-03-04
This is very compelling, dynamic music, & so idiosyncratic. Definitely unique, & moves in a very modern & brilliant way, especially with the interesting ways it makes use of different vocal lines...
An Incredible Merger of Rock & Opera.......2002-04-16
When I first heard this piece, it reminded me of the soprano solo from "The Fifth Element." This CD spans quite a range of music, from beautiful laments for lost loved ones to almost annoying choruses harping about the darker side of death. Unlike most requiems, which are straight laments, this one is more of a commentary on death. This one gets better with each listen. I particularly recommend the second-to-last track, Agnus Purus -- what an incredible choral movement and key change at the end. I could easily see this as the foundation for a movie soundtrack, or a new TV drama.

I can't believe.......2006-08-05
I seriously can't believe how under rated this album was. Girl from the gutter has brought so many different emotions out from inside of me. I remember when I first purchased this album, NO ONE knew who she was. I was amazed! I wish KINA would have gotton the credit for this album that she deserved!
Inspiring and original.......2004-07-31
Kina's music demonstrates the diversity of emotions we experience throughout our lives. Definitely the most uplifting track is "Girl from the Gutter" where she speaks out about negative people who try to bring us down, and how that can make us stronger.
Kina urges us through her compelling lyrics to stop, take a look, and listen to the world around us. These are the sorts of emotions I feel when I listen to her lyrics.
To my dismay, Kina's most compelling and joyous song did not make it to the radio stations. Her appropriately titled song "Me" expresses a very basic and logical fact: I'm just me. Through the song, you feel that she is almost shouting to the world: I'm just me, I am who I am, and I love and accept myself!
What I like most about this album is the dynamics of each track. Separately, each song sends a unique message to which one can easily relate. However, combined it is in itself a masterpiece; a symphony of euphoria with many of life's struggles and triumphs condensed into one of the best albums I have heard. Remarkable!
Some nice mixes of a great song........2000-09-13
"Girl From The Gutter" is the fantastic solo debut single from Kina (formerly of r'n'b trio Brownstone). The song represents a change of direction for Kina, with the introduction of guitars, and a more rock / r'n'b crossover sound. Unlike many combinations of urban and rock music, Kina's really does work and sounds completely genuine. The Soul Mix is a little closer to how you might remember Kina from her Brownstone days. The rock elements of the music have been toned down, and additional lyrics have been added towards the end of the track. The Jungle Mix is quite long, but I like it (and I don't like much when it comes to jungle music!).
The 2 remixes on this CD are also available on MP3 for free (and legal) download from Kina's official website - the URL is listed on the back of her album. Once at the site, click on the option of "Cool Stuff", then "Remixes". This is where you will find them, aswell as another remix not available on this CD. They also have a screensaver, desktop wallpapers and contests available there.
I recommend these remixes for anyone who enjoyed the original.

Buy it. You'll not go wrong.......2002-02-04
This is really an excellent album and it will be a welcome addition to your music library. As I write this, this does not sound like a ringing endorsement, let me try again. The album really is poetic, life affirming, filled with good music. Ah that's better.
Return to Paradise.......2001-05-10
I first heard the song "Jing Jing" at the beginning of the movie "Return to Paradise." I immediately had to find out the title of the song and the group. I hunted down this CD and I am am so glad I bought it. The chorus of voices is so beautiful and the songs are very upbeat and cute. The album is a nice mix of Okinawan pop, traditional sounds, and reggae (sort of).
Great music from Japan.......2001-03-02
Kina Shoukichi's music melds traditional Okinawan music with a modern pop sensibility. The result is a truly unique sound. Although most of these catchy tunes are upbeat, the standout is the achingly beautiful "Subete no Hito no Kokoro ni Hana o" ("Flowers for Everyone's Hearts"). I've heard that Kina's live performances are amazing. Most of us will never be lucky enough to judge for ourselves. Therefore, content yourself with this CD. It is one to treasure.
Like nothing you've ever heard before ..........2000-04-17
... unless, I have to guess, you've spent time in Okinawa.
I bought this CD at random from a used CD bin about five years ago. When I spun it up for the first time that evening, I almost fell over with amazement. I'm listening to it right now and that feeling hasn't changed.
With no disrespect meant to Okinawans or their music, I'll attempt to describe this as sounding like ... well, no, never mind. It's happy, upbeat in the purest sense, and wierdly catchy. The songs simply will not let go of your head. Read the lyric sheet for a further treat, as you learn that people really can write great songs about the simplest things in the world.
Buy this album and treasure it.

Masando (tasty)-- Review of Peppermint Tea House.......2000-01-03
No one captures the soul of Okinawa in music better than Kina Shoukichi. Like the Hawaiians who have the Aloha spirit, the Uchinanchu (native Okinawans) have Mensore spirit. It is a greeting that says Welcome. Peppermint Tea House is an invitation for listeners to be introduced to Okinawan rhythms and melodies by one of the best Uchinanchu songwriters. Highly regarded mainland Japanese artists, such as Sakamoto Ryuichi, Sandii and the Sunsetz and Shang Shang Typhoon, have been drawing from Okinawan music for the past decade or so, but no one does it as good, as loose, or as joyful, as Kina and his band the Champurus (Champloose is a badly anglicized version of the Okinawan word for an Okinawan food staple). CD highlights are the well-known songs, Haisai Ojisan, a song with a sense of humor and celebration, and the subtly beautiful and plaintive, Subete No Hito No Kokoro Ni Hanna O, made all the more gorgeous because of the vocals by Kinas wife and slide guitar by Ry Cooder. Accept no imitations. This is the real stuff. Uchina Mensore. Welcome to Okinawa.

There is nothing that quite compares to these live recordings made in Kina's own nightclub in Okinawa, Japan, in 1977. He took a local style of music called katcharsee and turned it into a proto-punk folk music that has all the power of a good rock band yet holds on to the local flavor of Okinawa's sanshin music. By taking this ancient folk instrument and electrifying it and by then adding bass, drums, and a girl-group style chorus, Kina began his journey to redefine and localize the popular music of Okinawa and, to some extent, Japan. These recordings are pretty raw, even after a quality digital remastering, but they evoke a visceral response, whether it's in a lilting ballad or the thundering "Hasai Ojisan!" At the same time that bands like Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span were expanding the folk roots of England, Kina and Champloose were making a revolution in Okinawa. --Louis Gibson
Customer Reviews:
Some reviewers sniffing glue?.......2003-06-12
It is fine to like this music, but to call it "proto-punk" is a total misnomer. That line you've heard about punk being about attitude, not music? It's a lie. Whatever lifestyle choices the term connotes, it most definitely does specify a type of rock 'n' roll, and "The Music Power from Okinawa" most definitely has nothing in common with it. Shonen Knife? Punk rock. REO Speedwagon? Not punk rock. Green Day? Perhaps a matter of opinion, but judging strictly from Amazon's sound clips, Shoukichi Kina makes them sound like the baddest, most strident, least socially acceptable punk band on earth. Sorry to rain on the parade, but I've read two reviews alluding to the "punk" nature of this album, and I have better things to do than to spend time previewing a mislabeled recording and be reminded that some ignorant music writers can't fathom the most obvious fine-points of pop-music analysis.
Kina's Kitchen.......2000-09-23
Kina's Kitchen was first located by Kadena Gate 1 in what was in the late sixties, early seventies called the Pan Pacific Building. It moved in the mid 90's to the location near Ft Buckner, Camp BUtler to you Marines who can't remember that the whole are save the small Fostor area was once all Army property. It was located adjacent to what is called Hamby Town on some old Army Helo field and reclaimed land.
Kina by the way is a mans name.. its now closed I believe.
Quintessentially Okinawan.......1999-08-28
If you want a true representation of Okinawan music this is it. I lived in Okinawa for 13 years, (83-96) and attended many festivals, often the only foreigner, at different villages and islands and was fortunate enough to meet Shoukichi in early '95. To set the record straight: Kina's Kitchen in Okinawa is not Shoukichi's club and didn't even exist in it's present location when this CD was recorded. Shoukichi's club is located in Naha City.
KINA's KITCHEN STILL STANDS IN OKINAWA.......1999-06-20
I was stationed on Okinawa (Camp Kinser) from December 1997 to December 1998 and frequented Kina's Kitchen. (Where this CD was recorded). The Okinawan people are very respectful, modest, kind, and generous. Their music is beautiful and steeped in history and culture. This recording is a good representation of how diverse the music of Okinawa sounds. I miss Kina's Kitchen and my Okinawan friends who I used to sing Karaoke with downstairs on the 3rd floor right below Kina's. It was one of the best years of my life and I will forever be grateful to the people of Okinawa for welcoming a foreignor to their country with kindness and respect.

Kina is Phenomenal.......2001-10-17
I go to clubs occasionally and from the moment I heard the song "Me" I was hooked. I then had to find out who this amazing singer was. Through some searching I discovered Kina. Then the song "Girl from The Gutter." Well I introduced that song to my friend Susan who I think loves it more than I. She even played it at her wedding. On a note from the wedding which I gave to her it said "To everyone else, your just Susan, but You'll always be a Girl from the Gutter to me." Kina has a very unique sound and I hope that she gets the recognition from the industry she deserves. She's truly an original. "Hey Kina, if your out there listening... Let me know if you need a duet partner."
KINA'S COOL!.......2000-08-01
KINA'S FIRST SINGLE "GIRL FROM THE GUTTER" IS COOL! I REALLY LIKE HER ROCK-ISH MUSIC. WHEN YOU LOOK AT HER YOU THINK KELIS (I HATE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW GIRL).BUT SHE BETTER THEN THAT. "STOP"IS ALSO A GOOD SONG TOO.
Not bad for a girl from the gutter!.......2000-07-13
I first heard this single on streaming audio, and scrambled to find out who was singing it. Seems that there's a buzz about her already, and the entire CD is not out yet, though I did get a copy of the promo.
Kina has a powerful voice. In the age of Britney Spears and her lookalikes/soundalikes, it's good to see that some vocalists are able to find a way to stay true to themselves and resist the urge to buy into that formulaic Pop sound. Her music incorporates a little bit of every genre though the single is very Rock-oriented. It'll be interesting to see how the industry tries to categorize and compartmentalize her.
I will defintely be one of the first to by her CD!
THIS IS IT.......2000-07-12
I really like this song. For its well written lyrics, the rhythem, the melody, everything about it... It's almost inspirational. Not many songs can give you that feeling of euphoric nostalgia after listening to it even once. This song is powerful, so moving. What surprises me the most is... it doesnt fall in the cliche genre it should...That is was I love so much about it. And her voice... is not only great but its distinct, as for all the criticism, about the screaming... It aids in the songs purpose. It's her artistic expression of anger, and honestly a Celine Dion voice would not accomodate the song. The people who think her singing takes away from the song are wrong, so lets forget the banal cliches and welcome aspiring, courageous, and revolutionary artists, and give this song a try... I gaurantee it, you will feel its emotions.
Other songs..........2000-07-11
I first heard this single (Girl from the Gutter) on Realplayer Take 5. It caught my attention right away. I immediately began searching for other songs from her album. Be sure and listen to "Have a Cry" and "Me" before you judge her voice. This girl has some great tunes! "Have a Cry" has a soulful swing like Sheryl Crow's leaving Las Vegas. But it's more bluesy (is that a word?). And Kina really sings on that track! "Me," I only heard the first 10 seconds of it. But it has a unique beat. I almost didn't think it was Kina until I heard her voice. Of those three songs that I heard, I'm definitely going to buy it. Some people have compared her to Alanis Morissette or Sheryl Crow. I think she holds a slight similarity. But she stands on her own with an original style. A nice blend of Rock/Pop and Blues.
