Product Description
Recorded Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA 11/26/04. His lyrics are rallying cries, calls to unify, declarations of protest. Illuminated by layers of rock, hip-hop, soul, reggae, and funk, Michael Franti and Spearhead groove through more than two hours of music for a captivated assembly at The Fillmore in San Francisco. If the times have been marked by tension and fear, Franti is unafraid to bring positivism to light, calling the audience to song with soaring vocals on Never too Late, spanning the political with grace on the Sly and Robbieproduced Bomb the World, and introducing, halfway through the second set, a Palestinian refugee he met while traveling through Iraq, Israel, and the West Bank (Hes never been to a concert before in his life.) Recorded on three CDs, this special new Michael Franti Instant Live release exemplifies Spearheads call of Power to the Peaceful. an astonishing accomplishment. If you've ever been to a Spearhead concert..........2006-09-08
Franti live.......2006-06-25
I believe it does a fantastic job capturing so much of the sprit Michael carries and transmits in his live shows. If you cannot find your way to a live show.....BUY this CD.
This 3 CD Set Was An Immense Disappointment!.......2006-04-02
Having listened to the studio music I could only imagine how much more real, immediate and soulful the experience of seeing and hearing them live would be. The next best thing, I thought, would be live recordings!
But was I sorely disappointed. In fact, I'm very sorry to say, I believe these were the most disappointing live recordings I've ever heard. How disappointing you might ask? Well, I bought this set back last year in the early fall. I played the first disc and thought, well, maybe the second one'll be better. When I finished listening to that one and was absolutely feeling ripped off, even angry, I avoided playing the third disc. Until just yesterday, March 31st, 2006. The LAST time I will play that disc or any of the other three.
I will be trying to sell to or trade for some other CDs at my local Hastings store, that's how dismal these recordings are to me.
Don't mistake me! I love Franti and Spearhead's studio recordings. Michael's one of the finest, most powerful song writers out there. Not to mention a truly great singer as well. He makes me feel what he's saying. And the music's always deep and connective.
But, at least on this set, all that deep soul just doesn't translate to the live experience. He spent too much time constantly trying to pump up the audience by shouting things like, "how ya feelin'?", etc. Many of the songs lacked the emotive depth that the studio recordings had. Often playing them faster and without the feeling the band imbued in the original tracks.
Sometimes they just went over the top and made the songs sound merely pedestrian. A far cry from the original recordings.
This doesn't mean I don't like Franti and the band. I just don't like this set of recordings. Some artists/bands are like that. I love the Stones in the studio, but dislike them in concert. Jagger pays real, genuine attention to the quality and depth of the in-studio recordings, whereas he's a buffoon in concert, making the songs sound like the commercial products they are when they play them in concert.
That's how I feel about this specific set of Franti/Spearhead live recordings. Now, I'm going to check out the other live ones to see if there's any improvement. We'll see how those sound(to be honest if Fillmore was any example I'm not very confident in the other ones).
But let me reassure anyone reading this opinion that you can bank on the Michael Franti & Spearhead studio recordings easily. They're truly musical masterpieces.
