The Temptations that made For Lovers Only in 1995 were far from the group that stormed the charts in the '60s and '70s--only baritone Otis Williams remained from the original lineup (he gets all of one lead vocal here), and they were still shaken by the recent death of founding bass man Melvin Franklin. So they went back to first principles--the radiant close harmonies, each voice leaning on the others, that have been their secret weapon from the beginning--and beyond, to pop standards of the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. The album's synthy instrumental arrangements already sound dated (especially a G-funk take on "Time After Time"), despite respectful cameos from Milt Jackson and Stevie Wonder. But the singing (most of the leads are handled by Ali-Ollie Woodson and Ron Tyson, who both joined in the '80s) is splendid: rough-edged and vulnerable, audibly taking refuge in standards like "Night and Day," recasting familiar lyrics about romance as wrenching eulogies. This reissue adds a remix of "Night and Day" that originally appeared on the What Women Want soundtrack to the original track listing as well as new liner notes. --Douglas Wolk

Sounds as fresh today as it did when the original was released back in 1995. Having their version of Night and Day included in the What Women Want movie was a good move, and should have helped them reach a wider audience. As a body of work, this must be amongst the best ever to come out of Motown, by any of their artists, and that should speak volumes. The arrangements and singing on these timeless standards will make your musical moments special, whatever your setting happens to be, cruising, chilling at home, getting your teeth pulled, (LOL)whatever. Don't be fooled as you look at the songs on offer because even if you've heard some of them, you haven't heard them like this.

I like the cd and was happy to find it via Amazon because it was not available in the local music stores; however, I was not pleased with the delivery. I remember this album Music For Lovers Only. But the version my parents had was the two 45-RPM records in the mini double jacket. Easy listening music expanded through the 1960s like 101 Strings and other orchestras plus more and more FM radio stations played the music in stereo through the 1970s. They were slowly replaced with rock and roll stations in stereo. Its sad to see things change but people will keep up with the times regardless. Some of this music may be found on AM radio stations today where rock and roll was once before. At least I'm happy to know that such music is being released on CD.

Irresistible mood!.......2005-09-11

Jackie Gleason was more than simple name to become a status reference. Somehow this ensemble was the American response in the 60's to Frank Pourcel, and Paul Mauriat in France, Norrie Paramor and Acker Bilk in U.K or Bert Kaempfert from Germany.
The musical legacy of this fabulous ensemble will be a milestone in the music. The magnificent arrangements and the exquisite good taste will endure as long there is passion for the light music in some corner of the planet.

AS I WAS READING SOME OF THE REVIEWS FOR THIS WONDERFUL JACKIE GLEASON ALBUM, I WAS APPALLED AT SOME REVIEWERS TOTAL LACK OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE RECORDINGS OF THIS PERIOD. I WILL TRY TO OFFSET THAT CONFUSION.

FIRST OF ALL, ALL POPULAR ALBUMS PRIOR TO 1955 WERE OF THE 10 INCH VARIETY....SO THE MOST ANY ALBUM COULD HAVE WERE 8 TUNES.

THE JAZZ ALBUMS OF THE TIME, HAD EVEN LESS BECAUSE OF THE LENGHT OF THE TRACKS. ONLY THE CLASSICAL ALBUMS WERE OF THE 12 INCH VARIETY, AND THAT WAS BECAUSE OF THE OBVIOUS EXTENDED LENGHT OF THE COMPOSITIONS. I WILL EXPAND MORE ON THIS LATER AS FAR AS THIS CD IS CONCERNED.

NO 2, I AM SICK AND TIRED OF LISTENERS WHO BY ALBUMS OF THIS PERIOD OR EARLIER AND COMMENT THEY WERE DISSAPOINTED IT WAS IN MONORAUL AND NOT STEREO.
WELL, STEREO WAS NOT PUT IN POP ALBUMS UNTIL 1956 AT THE EARLIEST AND THEY WERE MOSTLY EXPERIMENTAL(SOME OF THE EARLY STAN KENTON TRACKS OF THE MID 50'S WERE IN STEREO BUT NEVER RELEASED UNTIL ONLY A FEW YEARS AGO). STEREO WAS NOT REALLY UNLEASHED TO THE MASSES UNTIL 1958. SO PLEASE DON'T TAKE STARS OFF BECAUSE YOUR EARS CAN NOT TAKE MONO. DEAL WITH THE TECHNOLOGY OF THE TIME PEOPLE.

THE FIRST LP "MUSIC FOR LOVERS ONLY" WAS THE 10 INCH LP. WITH 8 SONGS ONLY. THE LADY FROM GA WHO SAYS SHE HAS THE FULL 16 SONGS ON HER ALBUM, HAS A CAPITOL RE-ISSUE. IT'S NOT THE ALBUM AS ORIGINALLY CONCEIVED. SO WHEN YOU GET THIS LP , YOU WILL GET THE EXACT 10 INCH VERSION. THE REMAINDER OF THE CD IS THE "MUSIC TO MAKE YOU MISTY" AND THAT IS THE ORIGINAL 12 INCH RECORDING. NOW THAT LP MAY HAVE HAD 16 SONGS ON IT. IF SO, CC SHOULD HAVE ADDED THE EXTRA 4 TRACKS, HOWEVER, BEING THAT THE LP WAS ORIGINALLY RELEASED IN 1959, I AM PRETTY SURE THAT THE LP HAD ONLY 12 SONGS ON IT(WHICH WAS THE STANDARD BY THAT TIME). SO , IF INDEED THAT WAS THE CASE,CC WAS FAITHFUL TO BOTH ORIGINAL LPS.

THE MUSIC OF COURSE IS TOP NOTCH, IT IS NOT MUSZAC OF ELEVATOR MUSIC. UNFORTUNATELY, NO ONE UNDER 40 WOULD EVEN KNOW ALBUMS LIKE THESE EXIST ...IT'S TO THEIR DETRIMENT AND OF COURSE, I BLAME THE RADIO PROGRAMERS....BUT THAT'S ANOTHER STORY.

Watch Out For Mono Tracks.......2003-11-04

Unless you're especially enamoured of the 1952 monaural edition of Music For Lovers Only, you'll find the first album disappointing. Neither Amazon, Collectors' Choice, nor EMI Music make it clear that Music For Lovers Only (the more desirable of the two album set) is completely monaural, in spite of the fact that Capitol actually released the same album in stereo in 1959.

The genius of Spike Jones--as a songwriter, bandleader, and musician--is often overshadowed by his comedic schtick. This wonderful 4 disc set of Spike Jones material running from 1941 to 1947 is a set to be cherished by long time fans and a fantastic starter set for those trying to find out what Spike was all about.For 95 songs, four discs,a 23 page booklet and at a price like this you'd be foolish to pass up this bargoon!!
The set features alot of his major material from his RCA catalogue with the rest made up from his transciptions,various live performances and V discs.Some rare,some not heard often,some heard quite frequently over the years but all a delight to the ears.
Keep in mind that none of this material is direct from the major labels who own the masters but are derived from 78s culled from private collections.There are more than a few cuts that are of inferior quality and/or have had some annoying reverb added to the remixing but overall the sound is quite acceptable and generally satisfying.I recently reviewed another Jones CD by the name of "Fonk" put out by another similar company as this one(Proper Records) called Harlequin Records(another indie company),both coincidentally produced in England.To make a long story short I would take this CD set,sound wise, over that poorly and unevenly mastered one.And "Fonk"(one CD) is not that terribly less in price than this (four CD) set.
One other minor criticism I should mention is that while each CD comes in its own protective cardboard sleeve I have had a devil of a time(every time) taking a CD out to be played.They seem to get stuck in the sleeve easily and I've had to learn how to carefully cajole them out without scratching the playing surface.If this should happen to you just keep practising you'll soon find out what works best for you.But indeed a minor annoyance.
So if you're a Spike Jones fan like myself and legions of others what are you waiting for......Feetlebaum ??? Get out there and get this bargain priced set and enjoy every last loving "crash","fonk" and car horn honk that Spike and his zany but talented troupe have to offer up in this must get set.

Not For City Slicker Beginners.......2006-07-28

If you are going to introduce Spike and the Slickers to somebody, pick one of the other "Best of" compilations that contain the final released versions of their hits! The reason for this is simple: those versions are the tight, finely tuned performances that made us fans. I consider this CD set an historical archive rather than a "best of collection". Although you'll hear many of the old favorites, they are "pre-release" (my terminology) versions: looser and not as, well, "good" as the final versions. For long time fans, like me, it is interesting to hear these recordings. But if you are brand new to Spike you will not get the true impression of just how great these guys were. Buy a plain old "best of" CD first, memorize it, treasure it, love it, then get this set. Incidently, this CD collection proves that not everything Spike did deserved presvervation, especially some of his "straight recordings". That was too harsh...I am glad I heard those numbers, but I am now trying to forget I heard them. 'Bye now.

Good, But Still Missing a Few Gems.......2006-01-29

The Spike Jones box CD set is good but doesn't quite hit home for me. The CD "Spiked" has a more concentrated selection of the typical Spike Jones songs you would want to hear. I was disappointed in the fact the song "Pal-Yat-Che" was ommitted from this set. There are songs selected for this CD that are outdated and do not fit todays culture but where fine during WWII. There where other, more forgetible songs they did leave on this CD that I can't even remember as I write this. Spike Jones also butchered the entire Nutcracker Suit and it was ommitted from this collection. The biographic book that comes with the box set is very well written though.

If you like surf music and a taste of irony, slap your toupee on, wrestle that bear, and belly up to the bar! Without a doubt this is my favorite album of the Southern Culture oeuvre. The lyrics are witty, the guitar work gritty, and the groove pithy! I don't know a person who hasn't heard the album and loved it. It is just downright fun and well worth the coin!

When this CD was released, group member Otis Williams was quoted as saying that it was a belated follow-up to the Temptations' 1967 In a Mellow Mood set. Much like that LP, this 12-track album contains some time-honored standards like Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Some Enchanted Evening" and Cole Porter's "Night and Day." Of course, there are some major differences between For Lovers Only and that recording: only Williams remains from the original lineup and the arrangements are totally in sync with '90s technology. "At Last" (best known by Etta James's early-'60s version) is one of the standouts here, along with a surprisingly refreshing reading of "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" and a slowed-down, soul-infused version of Dinah Washington's classic "What a Difference a Day Makes." A 1961 hit by the Classics, "Life Is But a Dream," is given a wonderful doo-wop workout and includes a great Stevie Wonder harmonica solo; a medley of Ed Townsend's "For Your Love" and Sam Cooke's "You Send Me" works very well. Props to veteran producer Richard Perry for providing appropriate musical settings for this excellent project. --David Nathan

Incredible does not go far enough........2006-03-21

I have just finished reviewing the Temptations new album, "Reflections". Listening to this CD again makes me realise how disappointing the new CD is. This album is incredible it grabs you from the first note. All the songs are given an update that not only keeps faith with the originals, but brings them home to a new audience. Please get this CD now, before it is to late.

Silky Smooth.......2003-01-16

I purchased this cd after I'd heard the song "Night and Day" played in the movie, "What Women Want." I was not disappointed! The entire cd is a silky smooth collection of classics, sang in a style that belongs only to the Temptations. This cd makes a wonderful holiday gift for mature listeners. It's excellent when you want something easy to listen to, dance to, or hum/sing along with. You would do well to add this cd to your collection.

To remember when singing was an art!!.......2002-09-28

At forty-two, I've been blessed to listen to many masters of the sound we love as "soul". But to my dismay,and no disrespect intended, these past few years mostly have produced "singers" who, at best, would have been backups to the master soul singers and groups. To hear the mighty Temptations croon old standards arranged as to make almost completely new songs let's me know, if ony for a little while, that "Life is but A Dream", and we all should revel in it. As an amatuer vocalist, I love these songs, and pray that the Temptations continue to thrill us all.

JUST WHAT WE NEEDED!!!.......2002-06-19

This CD, particularly the Tempts' version of the ever-popular "Some Enchanted Evening" was so elegantly arranged, that we selected it to use during our formal wedding on June 30th, 2001. At the second reception when we were "introduced" we walked in, as the music was starting, walked to the center of the Ballroom and did the "Bridal Dance", a waltzy slow drag, to this song. The effect was awesome! Leave it to the Temptations to give us such a different version of this timeclass classic. It was absolutely PERFECT!!!

ON A RECENT VACATION TO ST BARTH'S, WHERE MY HUSBAND AND I PACKED OUR OWN FAVORITE SELECTION OF CD'S TO LOUNGE POOLSIDE WITH, WE DISCOVERED FOR LOVER'S ONLY IN THE VILLA COLLECTION. NEEDLESS TO SAY WE LISTENED TO IT MANY TIMES EACH DAY OF OUR 2 WEEKS. WE FOUND IT GREAT TO LISTEN TO OVER A FRESHLY BAKED CROISSANT AND COFFEE. WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES WAS OUR BREAKFAST FAVORITE. IT SET THE TONE FOR THE DAY SO THAT WE COULD DECIDE WHICH POOLSIDE LOUNGE WE WOULD OCCUPY. AT LUNCH WE WOULD LISTEN TO THE ENTIRE CD TWICE OVER WHILE WE GOURGED ON FRENCH CHEESES, BREADS AND OF COURSE A BOTTLE OF ROSE. THIS CD ALSO IS THE PREFECT BACKROUND MUSIC TO LULL YOURSELF AND YOUR LOVER INTO AN AFTERNOON NAP AFTER THE LUNCH FEAST. COCKTAIL HOUR WAS MADE MORE ROMANTIC WITH THE TEMPS AS WE DANCED POOLSIDE TO NIGHT AND DAY AND I'M GLAD THERE IS YOU. OFF TO DINNER(UNFORTUNATELY NO CD PLAYER IN THE RENTAL CAR) BUT WE ALWAYS CAME HOME TO SOME ENCHANTED EVENING. Awesome voice, exquisite performances.......2006-08-27

These two CDs contain a great selection of classical, operatic and folk songs in English, German and Italian by the famous contralto (1912 - 1953). Highlights on the first CD include What Is Life from Orfeo et Euridice, Art Thou Troubled from Rodelina, Woe Unto Them and O Rest In The Lord from Elijah and the traditional song Blow The Wind Southerly.

My personal favorites appear on the second CD. The first is the divine Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes, the Ben Jonson poem, which is a most mystical and transcending listening experience. The buoyant Stuttering Lovers is most catchy and appealing. Both of the aforementioned are sung to the piano accompaniment of pianist Phyllis Spurr.

Backed by the London Philharmonic, Ferrier renders splendid versions of Father Of Heaven from Judas Maccabaeus and O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings To Zion from The Messiah. These are truly awesome, the first one slow and somber, the second joyous and triumphant. Other highlights on this second CD include He Was Despised from The Messiah and All Is Fulfilled from St John Passion by Bach.

The informative CD booklet contains black and white photographs, a short biography in English, French and German, plus complete information on the recording of the tracks: composers, dates, venues, conductors and musicians. Kathleen Ferrier was a unique vocalist who made a magnficent contribution to classical and folk music.

It may take you a little time to love her voice.......2004-08-19

Kathleen Ferrier has one of the most instantly recognizable voices in music. And it's a voice that might take you time to love. As an eight year old I heard her version of Blow the Wind Southerly many times on British radio and intensely disliked it. I wasn't sure if it was a man or a woman, adult or child, such is the nature of her contralto. But over the years, especially hearing Ferrier sing Handel and Mahler, I've come to treasure her recordings alongside Callas, Sutherland, Flagstad and Baker. This two disc set contains performances which are about 45-55 years old. Many favourites are here especially the folk songs and selections from Bach, Handel and Mahler. The sound quality is excellent. The sleeve notes mention that Ferrier's vocal delivery may sound old fashioned to our ears. But her remarkable voice which stirs one's deepest emotions, transcends any thought of quaintness or mannerism. She is, quite simply, the greatest contralto ever. This selection will have you seeking out her other recordings on Amazon.com. And it might also lead you to Virginia Rodrigues, a Brazilian contralto with a superb voice who, like Ferrier, makes everything she sings, her own.
