The mid-'70s song "Play that Funky Music White Boy" was by Wild Cherry, but if you really want a bunch of pigmentally challenged males to play some funky music, then call on the Average White Band. This band of Scots was anything but average. This 1975 debut featured the smoking instrumental "Pick up the Pieces," which merged hard-bop precision with funk's wanton playfulness. Their vocal numbers, such as "Schoolboy Crush," were also very good. Much of the music from this record has been covered by smooth jazz artists yearning for an edge (like Candy Dulfer) and sampled by savvy DJs. The Average White Band ran short on ideas after a few recordings, but the ones presented here deserve your rapt attention. --Martin Johnson

One of the best albums from the seventies.... Has aged well. .......2007-03-30
Every song on this recording is a winner. These guys were excellent students of the classic R&B sounds that came before them. THEY GOT IT (No pun intended), quite obviously when you listen to this recording.
The vocal duets brings to mind the dynamic but functional disparity of Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin. Hamish Stuart with his fluid dynamic falsetto and Alan Gorrie's soulful baritone tenor.
The "hit song" is the third cut and you shouldn't skip right to it since you will miss two excellent pieces.
"You Got It" is soulful, plaintive, uptempo and fun. You find yourself singing to it. It so effectively cuts to the core of things.
"Got The Love" is funky, with a good groove and nice harmonies.
"Person to Person" - is one of THE best tracks on the recording. Funky, clever and tight. They hit the accents as a unit with a preciseness that calls to mind "Tower of Power". Robbie McIntyre is a driving force on this. This drumming is perfect keeping with the spirt of this piece.
"Work To Do" - Speaking of Tower of Power, the horns recalls them when they come in, at full force with Alan and Hamish trading vocals and doing the Isleys proud.
"Nothing You Can Do" - essental R&B influence pop. It's one of those summer cruisin' in your car songs.
"Just Want To Love You Tonight" - Just the thing for romance. Rich vocal harmonies bringing to mind the Manhattans, just a bit. Again one of those songs that goes straight to the Heart.
"Keepin' It To Myself" - a very good vocal showcase of Alan Gorrie on his best vocal on the recording
I can't see any good pop collection without this one recording in it. You can put this one on today and still enjoy it. Solid singing, arrangments. Good songs.
On later releases you might find an alternate version of "Pick Up The Pieces" done by larger horn section featuring David Sanborn and Michael Brecker. A very strong rendition of that song.
"Anything But Average".......2007-01-10
Now things may have been different back in the day and I'm sure they were, being I was born a year later in 1975 and wouldn't know but to me they were one of the great bands such as EWF(71-79 only) Ohio Players,Isley Brothers, and the Doobie Brothers being the others that you could play straight through without pressing stop. Maybe I should start my own AWB fan club to get these guys more recognition because although everyone in the music world during that time know these guys are legends many people are missing out on some true soul. My favorites are "I Just Can't Give You Up"(Hamish kills this song with his superb high tenor/falsetto and Robbies excellent drum work),"Work To Do"(Alan puts his all ito this song with his vocals ala Ron Isley). "Just Wanna Love You"(killer base line by Hamish and smooth musianship by the rest of the fellas), and "Got The Love"(one funky jam, what else can I say). Average White Band for life playaaaaaa!!!

a rip-off - zero star not available.......2005-12-06
The more I see of this, the more I tend to hang with my son who says the criminals in the musicscene deserve to be ripped off cos IT'S THEM WHO SHOW HOW IT'S DONE.
I'm now sitting on a piece of garbage that cost me money I paid to have the WHOLE deal. WHY WOULD I BUY THIS CD WITH TRACKS THAT I ALREADY HAVE IF NOT FOR THE MONTREUX FULL LIVE 22 MINUTES?
BONUS TRACK CUT SHORT BY 14 MINUTES.......2005-09-08
It could have fit with room to spare. The full version is one of the greatest jam sessions you'll never hear unless you have the original 2 lp set from that time. It is not available on CD. The fact that some genius made this decision is mind boggling. Because of this I can only give it 4 stars. With the full version it would go beyond the 5 stars allowed to a 10.
