Editorial Reviews
For the last few albums, UB40 often wrote different elements of the songs separately, but for this long-awaited return, they not only jammed, but wrote the songs together as a unit. By doing this and recording in an open-air style studio environment, the overall sound and quality of the album really shines through with Ali Campbell's voice sounding richer and more soulful than ever before. Who You Fighting For? includes signature ballads, politically charged lyrics, toe-tapping summer reggae tracks and wonderful covers, including an obscure track by the Beatles. The single 'Kiss and Say Goodbye' (originally performed by The Manhattans) is an infectious ballad thats destined for radio ubiquity. EMI. 2005.

At some indeterminate point in their now 25 year long history and with serenely inconspicuous efficiency, Birmingham's UB40 rose to a level of peerlessness as the first-family of British reggae. While they've absolutely nothing left to prove--save to those bored by their longevity--Who You Fighting For finds UB40 shouting more loudly than usual; the likelihood being - even at this autumnal stage of the band's career--that less partisan ears may be pricked by such refreshing spices as the Bhangra chorus of "Reasons" or even by more traditional summer reggae sweeteners as "Gotta Tell Someone" or the dark, philanderer-reformed ruminations of "One Woman Man". But the real reason why UB40 are raising their voices is Iraq, possibly the most upset they've been about anything since Maggie's iron grip on the keys of Number 10. While having the brass to call one tune "War Poem" doesn't bode well, UB40 reach for the shrewd invective on "Sins Of A Father", a well-written censure of Christian neo-Conservatism and oil lust. Sensibly, the lean skin-and-bone production and avoidance of MOR blandishments make UB40 seem meaner and younger than they have done in years. --Kevin MaidmentAlbum Description
With a winning sound fusing reggae with both pure pop and topical politics, UB40 has sold over 50 million albums worldwide. Twentyfive years down the road from their groundbreaking debut LP Signing Off, the eight-man British reggae supergroup is still at the top of their game with the new album Who You Fighting For?. Weaving together the band's revolutionary roots and pop sensibilities, their latest is among the best, delivering originals including the title track, "Sins of the Fathers," and "One Woman Man" alongside a handful of irresistible covers, in grand UB40 tradition.Customer Reviews:
A great popular reggae band throws down a great album.......2007-05-26
This is probably their greatest album ever, and I have them all.
Don't miss it.

A Step Back, Though Not Much of a Step Forward.......2006-09-02
UB40's earlier works were most noteworthy for a song to go through multiple phases of progression, leading to dynamite "crescendo's" featuring synth solos or horn solos, choruses that made you want to sing! In terms of production UB40's earlier works are a goldmine of multidimensional richly layered tunes.
The production is totally lacking on this album.
On this album you will find the simple "one" "two" "one" "two" piano rhythm (on almost every track!), coupled with very basic(bland) & repetitive bass rhythms. The Sax is here, though it never shines.
Though if you are a fan of UB40's more toned down late 90's to present sound, this album probably will not dissapoint you. Because even though the songs on this album are not bad, they just are not that good.
Furthermore, in light of this album being toted as UB40 "getting back to its roots"....do not be fooled.
Simply put this album lacks the energy of their earlier works.
If you are interested in UB40 check out the following albums for some of the best Reggae period. Listed in order from heavy dub influence to more progressive/cross genre influenced works; 1980-1983, Present Arms, Signing Off, Geofrey Morgan, Labour of Love, Labour of Love II.

No bad tracks but no standouts either.......2006-07-02
On the other hand, I must say that none of the tracks blew my mind, either. The cover gave me the idea this would be much more of a message CD and instead its full of love and relationship related songs more than anything else. You might say its mostly lovers rockers style. Its mellow and melodic.
This album is perfect for true fans of UB40 but also of true roots style reggae. Its a good CD, but "I'm Not Fooled" will remain my favorite UB40 song of all time. Nothing on this album comes close in my opinion. Still, if you're starved for roots style reggae this is a good bet.
One of their BEST !.......2006-06-11

Back, and Better Than Ever.......2006-02-01
Judging from the evidence provided on "Who You Fighting For?," it appears as though against all odds - the band has regained its creative focus, and perhaps even improved. The majority of the songs here are written by the bandmembers, combining political observations and love songs with a strong melodic edge that stands easily among their best work. "War Poem" has an ominous title, but the rhythmic melody is practically contagious, while the album's title track and "Plenty More" are equally commendable (and equally politicized, dancing on the vocal hook of "Five megatons of oblivion, sent with love from the Pentagon"). All three songs betray the working-class politics of a country dragged into an unpopular war, and they make their point while somehow managing to sound downright joyful. Elsewhere, "Gotta Tell Someone" is flat out celebratory, discussing love in gratifyingly uncomplicated terms, along with the danceably energetic come-on of "After Tonight". And just for the record, "Things You Say You Love" is the best pop song I've heard so far this year, with an intoxicating string arrangement that suggests (and surpasses) the Supremes' "Someday We'll Be Together".
Given their history, this wouldn't be a UB40 album without a few well-chosen cover songs, and the choices presented here are brilliantly selected. I consider myself a Beatles fanatic, but I have no idea where they found a Lennon-McCartney tune entitled "I'll Be On My Way." Naturally, it's great, but just as good is their reworking of "Kiss and Say Goodbye," a song that already got the reggae treatment from singer John Holt. Considering the overall quality of "Who You Fighting For?," I can only wonder why UB40 has been away so long. Better than good, this might just be the best album of their career, and it's great to have them back. A Tom Ryan

Delivers what is expected from the group.......2006-02-10
We all know that UB40 is a predominately reggae band, but there is a lot of pop-rock appeal to there music. The group comes out swinging on the opening track "Who You Fighting For," as they describe how big business and the government profits from the little guy putting his life on the line. "After Tonight" (Matumbi) is a seductive track full of brass and percussion. Despite its silly title, "Bling Bling" is quite catchy and refreshing. It's not all about political outcry for UB40, they engage in a spiritual discussion of the first law makers and first rules of the land on "Sins of the Fathers."
"Good Situation" (Gene Chandler) focuses on determination in the eyes of infatuation. UB40 count off one by one the "Reasons" why they're attracted to someone special. The tempo in this one is faster that usual for the group. "I'll Be on My Way" is a remake of a McCartney/Lennon collaboration. It's not a song a recognize, but it's enjoyable just the same. The group's cover of The Jamaicans' "Things You Say You Love" has a nice bounce to it.
The Bad
The covers chosen for this album are quite obscure, for me at least.
The Verdict
UB40 have a distinct sound of there own, and nothing has changed on Who You Fighting For. Though I feel that this release caters more to longtime fans, it still delivers what is expected from the group.
Solid Album.......2006-02-08
this album should be doing better.......2005-09-25
UB40 - They are amazing!!.......2005-08-24
The opening track - "Who You Fighting For?" - sends out the question many of us would like an answer for. In a day and age where we are all supposed to be better educated and be able to reason on our differences - UB40 wants to know why are we at war? Who will actually benefit?... The guys give us a few songs that will make you think and be more aware. Ali Campbell's voice stills sounds as sweet as ever. Another outstanding cut on the disk is "Gotta Tell Someone". It's just too bad they don't release their stuff over here anymore and we don't justify any live shows. Have UB40 forgotten about their American fans... sure seems like it.
