In 1999, Macy Gray's On How Life Is filled a void that no one knew existed. The eccentric singer's unusual voice--more sand than gravel--and her eyebrow-raising lyrics consumed a massive space that was accessible but also controversial. After all the hype surrounding her just-add-water superstardom, the daunting question her follow-up, The Id, must answer is how well she can weather the abundant exposure. Over the course of Gray's second album, the novelty of her vocal style is somewhat tempered by her limited range. That said, what she lacks in octave-conquering she and producer Rick Rubin more than make up for in creativity. The album's many eclectic singles stand strong. "Psychopath" opens the disc with a wall-of-sound block party; it's a funky, celebratory track, well endowed with twangy surf guitar, glimpses of theremin, a ragga-inspired bass line, and lots of goodies floating in the song's highest register (backing vocals, splashes of cymbals, piano). Gray's album also benefits from a host of R&B and hip-hop guests, including Slick Rick, Sunshine Anderson, Angie Stone, Mos Def, and most notably Erykah Badu, who supports Gray on "Sweet Baby," a moving uptempo ballad that easily rivals the best that '70s soul has to offer. Once again, her lyrical sensibility is gripping, vacillating from whimsical ("Oblivion") to disturbing ("Gimme All Your Lovin' or I Will Kill You"). In all, Macy Gray continues to wave her R&B freak flag while digging deep in the trenches of the vividly real. --Beth Massa

2.5 stars.......2006-11-25
In the liner notes, 'the id' is defined as the actions one does before thinking. That perfectly describes this album. It sounds jumbled and very spur of the moment. She made this album before thinking about how bad it was and how it would ruin the reputation she established with her debut. Almost every song is a half-baked idea that wears out its welcome at the 2 minute mark. They are funky, I'll give them that, but otherwise this is not worth the buy. I would suggest her debut or her third album. Both are much better.
Genious!.......2006-11-11
The Id .......2005-12-27
My favorite tracks are: SWEET BABY, DON'T COME AROUND, FORGIVENESS, SEXUAL REVOLUTION & RELATING TO A PSYCHOPATH.
Two other songs that I enjoyed are: HEY YOUNG WORLD PT II & HARRY (love the organs & overall music production).
I like the comparison between Macy & Billie Holliday because both have very unique singing voices which may take the uninitiated a little time to truly appreciate but once you give yourself a chance & time to listen, I think you'll like more than you dislike.
got to feel this dance in my head.......2005-07-07
i love to read the lowest ratings and was entertained, as usual, by the total lack of understanding held by those who rated this album 1star. this album perfectly embodies "the id." it is free and macy is not typical. she is not top 40. she's not clear channel. and these people obviously are.
and thank god she's not...cuz i "got to feel this dance in my head"

Witty and Charming.......2000-08-15
This is Professor Pete- Peter Schickele introduces himself as well as P.D.Q.
1712 Overture- A takeoff of the 1812 overture of course, with snatches of some famous folktunes thrown in here and there.
Oedipus Tex- A parady of the Greek Myth Oedipus Rex where he murders his father who is the King. Oedipus Tex lives a life like his brother but in Texas style.
The next tracks are more comedy than exactly music like the WTWP station giving options over the phone about how you would like to hear a certain peice of music. Cooking French... is a woman cooking a French gourmet meal but flubbing up the entire time.
What I have already said pretty much sums it up. The rest of the tracks are equally hilarious and as witty as all the others. If you buy this CD you will not regret it no matter what type of music you listen to.

real underground Hip Hop.......2006-09-28
The Black Album.......2006-09-26
OH MAN, these beats are insane!.......2006-07-28
First of all THESE BEATS ARE PRIME-CUT, AAA serloin type s**t. NO I.D, definitely kept some of his best material for himself, you couldn't ask for more.
The problem within this album lies in the MC's, NO I.D & his unknown buddy Dug Infinite (who appears on every track).
The first time the world heard NO I.D rhyme was on "Resurrection" on the classic track "In My Own World (Check the Method)." Verdict, he was pretty bland but along side Common he came off dope. That's the problem with this album, Common only appears on the track "State to State," leaving NO I.D to fill the void left by Com with the boring but bearable Dug Infinite. He gets the job done, but NO I.D really should have found a pro.
So what we have here is two medicore (at best) MC's trading rhymes over AMAZING BEATS. To be fair, they try their best - you can hear it in their rhymes, alot of the tracks have socially conscious (a la Common) themes and there's alot smart s**t being said by these two. They have brains and heart, just not much talent.
Bottom Line: Overall, this is a really good album. The beats are really dope and the MC's get the job done. I recommend it and I'm glad I bought it. 4 stars, Peace.

As we've come to expect from Peter Schickele (aka P.D.Q Bach), this is a comedy CD based thoroughly and utterly in classical music in-jokes, puns, references, mis-hearings, etc. Here, we're in the world of a casual, presumably classical music radio show ("all Pachelbel, all the time"), with a host and two sidekicks, all of whom can't resist "witty" chitchat. There are spoofs of fundraising (they hope for $100.00 by the end of the show), a song called "Sam and Janet," which actually turns into a polyphonic version of "Some enchanted evening" (get it? Sam and Janet = Some enchanted), a set of four folk songs accompanied by "devious instruments," one of which is a cardboard tube, which is to "played" by hitting it against someone's head. And one of the rules of the station is that all music must be in a major key until after 11 PM. Fans of Schickele who truly love his sophisticated spoofs of classical music will find fewer of them here than usual, oddly enough, but the CD is fun. And a highlight is a non-classical number or two (snuck in by the co-hosts, Jocko and Blondie) sung by Elvis's brother "Enos," who liked his name until they started calling his brother "Elvis the Pelvis." Delightful, if this is what you're looking for. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:
Not My Favorite.......2006-04-04
For the dedicated PDQ fan only..........2005-10-29
I cannot comment on whether this send-up of classical radio
stations is really fair. But, when I am trapped in a car without
my IPOD, I do listen to many pop radio stations and the
material on this CD with lots of annoying and stupid DJ
chatter is all too familiar. But that is the problem. Listening
to this CD is like watching a comedy skit that goes on and on
longer than it has to. Yes I did laugh a few times at the material
and the liner notes. But I cannot say this is really even "average"
PDQ material, hence the below average rating.
Better than Citizen Kane.......2005-02-16
Elliott Forrest
blistering parody.......2004-09-03
Very witty parody.......2002-07-02
Other hilarious songs are the four "Folk Song Upsettings" for soprano, piano, and "devious instruments" including Prof hitting himself over the head with cardboard tubes.
The reason I give this only a 4 rather than a 5 rating is that some of the actual PDQ instrumental music isn't that good. Sure, it's obviously not SUPPOSED to be good, but I mean it isn't bad or zany enough to be as funny as earlier PDQ Bach pieces like "My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth" and "Shleptet" and "The Stoned Guest," all of which were more inspired comedically and musically.
Still, this is definitely a CD to make you laugh. The best parts make it worth going through some less inspired sections.

A Good, Poppy Punk Record.......2007-02-14
Tisk tisk..........2007-02-07
The pride of Hafia Israel, Useless ID, used to be a good punk band with poppy components. With this cd, it's obvious that they've become a pop band with (presumably) punk hair cuts. If you liked Let it Burn or Bad Story Happy Ending, do not buy this cd.
i love this cd.......2006-04-23
Useless ID-Israeli Punk.......2005-12-11
1.Its allright - very cool song. Its amazing. this was the song i heard a sample of when i heard it. Even then, it was like green day. Great.
2.Kiss me/Kill me - This is a great song. i like how in the chorus the chord progression changes completely. Yes.
3.Pink stars and magazines - this is the latest "issue" of great punk songs. I love the lyrics the most. It great.
4.Deny it - This is the only song that BORES me a little. the lyrics could be a bit better and so the druming as well. 1/2 and 1/2.
5.Suffer for the fame - my absolute favorite on the whole cd. first it starts out with jazzy type music and goes into a jimi hendrix vresion one of beethovens symphonys. then it just goes into the song. but i'd still say that its great. Excitment and all. i like how at the end its kind of like a Slipknot chorus and it goes, "I!!!! don't want it in my world........" An amazing one.
6.Turn up the stereo - good song. it even does feel like i want to turn up the stereo. its great song.
7. Before i go - i think its an amazing song. 1. because my friends and me are making a movie and its about exploring and this song might be the opening credits. 2. the lyrics and vocal styling are one of the best on the cd.
8. Dying Love- its a great song. just BORES me a little. Pretty good, tho.
9.Drinkage-good song. the lyrics are pretty good. the drumming is too.
10.Everything turned red - my second favorite on the cd. really good and cool. i like when the song ends where it goes "Everything turned red the first time i saw you" over and cver again and it seems like it never stops.
11.State of fear - my third favorite on the cd. it is a great song. all i have to say.
12. Redemption - my fourth favorite. i love it, tho. its really cool, the lyrics, the percussion, and the guitars and the bass are really good in this one. great closing track.
All in all, i really love this cd and it is a must by for those who like Jimi Hendrix, green day, and Ozzy, and Slipknot. This is still an Israeli punk band. i stil can't believe they are isreali! they sing in english, tho.
