Atlanta singer-songwriter Donnie's Colored Section debut is uneasy listening of the highest order, as the album's title--referencing an ugly manifestation of racial prejudice--suggests. Donnie has a message; actually, he has a grocery list's worth. And he scatters them throughout his Southern-fried soul songs in blunt, riveting language. In a voice plainly reminiscent of Stevie Wonder, Donnie challenges notions of inequality, and while his words are sobering, he never loses sight of the groove. The horn-infused, swaggering "Big Black Buck" is pure New Orleans funeral march, while "Beautiful Me"--a razor-sharp pronouncement of individuality--builds on an almost gospel foundation, albeit one with a percussive spine. "Our New National Anthem" has a finger-snapping Philly-soul vibe, and while a reference to the impact of 9/11 seems, at this point, a bit like declaring the sky blue, it's a rare misstep in an otherwise fluid and funky debut. --Kim Hughes

5 out of 5 stars a must own cd for any lover of soul .......2007-06-29

One of the 10 best cds made this decade. If you like relevant soul music and dont have this cd, shame on you.

5 out of 5 stars Donnie 's groove.......2007-06-26

This is too awesome I keep it in heavy rotation. My favorites are Cloud 9, Rocketship and Do you know. The brother is a true artist.

4 out of 5 stars Thinking Man's Soul.......2007-06-26

I need to be better informed considering this CD is five years old. To be fair, i had all but given up on R&B, soul, or whatever you call the current crop of Black music nowadays (I call it Black Pop myself). It's so refreshing to hear an artist that doesn't want to follow the norm, but is intent on showcasing a multitude of subjects in one CD. It is also refreshing to be able to play a CD that has no fillers, and flows from start to finish. I, like many can hear similarities to Stevie Wonder, and Donny Hathaway, but this doesn't distract from my enjoyment of this CD. On the most part, Donnie has been able to negotiate the difficult balance between preaching a message, but also producing quality music, as too often the message songs, while worthy of our attention, are poorly produced & executed. 'Wildlife Cloud 9, Welcome to the Colored Section, Big Black Buck, Masterplan, and people person are great examples of Donnie getting the balance right. He has now released his sophomore CD, and on the strength of this, I'll be getting that soon. Big up to my Boy Kayode for recommending this.

4 out of 5 stars Good.........2007-06-25

Yes... this is a very good album.. but for me, in some of the songs, the music overpowers the vocals and that for me is a no no for total enjoyment.
If you know Stevie Wonder songs, it is clear that most, if not all his songs come from Stevie Wonder...also the race topics etc are all what Stevie Wonder covered in his time. I do not have the time to do it but I can tell you the Stevie Wonder songs he used to write each of his songs example Rocketship, but I am not writing this review to put him down because for me, this all is ok... plus lots of other people do the same thing... it is just not noticed.

If you like this cd alot, check out Raul Midon...a little different but very good...no fillers as they say.

5 out of 5 stars One of my unsung heroes, for real!.......2007-05-27

Following the release of the lead single "Do You Know?" in 2001, I was so anticipating this 2002 CD that when it finally came out, I'd have paid any amount to get my hands on a copy. Donnie was then and remains now, a refreshing change from the myriad of one-dimensional singers out there, whatever it is that they claim to be singing, be it soul, r&b or neo-soul. He sings of things like being proud to be black, about self-righteous hypocrisy, racism, homophobia, pure love and friendship. Not the usual "urban" music fare. None of the usual (and tired) 'Do me baby, Do me baby' or 'I want to do you baby' rubbish here.

It works for me. The man sings with earnestness and an honesty that just melts the heart and warms the soul. He's obviously influenced by Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway but show me a true soul singer who isn't. Donnie still has his own voice though and his songs (he wrote/co-wrote all the songs on the album) are full of passion, richness and multi-layered meaning. He's definitely one of my unsung heroes.

I call him an unsung hero because I don't think he's gone on to get the level of success and recognition that he deserves. The world is changing - though not necessarily progressing - and that is one of the main reasons why we don't hear more music like this today and will probably go on to hear less and less of it. If this album had come out back in the 70s or even the 80s, it would've made Donnie a huge star. But in today's climate it would seem that if you're a black singer, male or female, in order to get adequate support and promotion from your record label and then from radio and music television, all in order to have mass appeal in the market, you have to present yourself in a certain way.

Not every black singer is prepared to do anything for fame and wealth though, thank goodness and for that, Donnie has my total love and respect (and, I'm sure, the total love and respect of others who recognise good quality music). He has a new CD out, Daily News, and while it seems to only have limited availability on a UK-based independent label at the moment, and while I haven't heard it yet, and while it's taken five years coming, I hear it on good authority that he hasn't abandoned his sense of who he is and what he has to say. I hear it's a very good follow-up indeed. (A US version, The Daily News, is scheduled for release in June).

I find it impossible to choose favourite tracks; they're all brilliant in my view. And considering that this is another CD produced by Steve "The Scotsman" Harvey, one of my favourite producers of the moment, I am not at all surprised. This is a real modern soul album. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars Real Hip Hop.......2000-12-19

Tight project from this left coast act. Smooth production combined with the laid back rhyme style of Coke (formally of Madcap) and Che'ski equals a solid album. Made in the true spirit of Hip Hop's early days, this album is all about fun. No set trippin' or heavy social issues, just party and B.S....and there's nothing wrong with that every once in awhile. The highlight of the album is the incredibly clever, "Bomb M.C. Original Recipe" which pays tribute to the pioneers of the game. The Old Gold remix flips it to a west coast pioneer retrospective, but doesn't hit quite as hard as it's predecessor. Overall the album is short and to the point. No throw away tracks to speak of. You should be able rock this one from begining to end.
