Having the vocal skills to be able to sing the phonebook doesn't necessarily mean that one should. Over the course of his last few albums, singer extraordinaire Luther Vandross has been saddled with material not nearly as magnificent as his silken, impeccably romantic voice. Luckily for fans of Luther, and for anyone who hungers for grown-up polished R&B/pop, the king of the love song is back. Though nowhere near his early classics, this eponymous release is definitely his best since 1991's Power of Love. From aching ballads to uptempo finger poppers, Luther lets the magic of his supple voice weave a spell. Even if his chart-topping days are behind him, Vandross's ability to croon is firmly in effect. This is solid and satisfying stuff. --Amy Linden

The best-of-Luther thing has been done a couple of times before, but Greatest Hits lays it down well. The single-disc format means that one of your favorites might not be here, but among the well-chosen gems present are "Never Too Much," "A House Is Not a Home," "So Amazing," and "Any Love." Vandross, of course, was the reigning king of '80s R&B romance; while he was never as troubled as Marvin Gaye or as downright eccentric as Al Green, he did have that voice. Before hip-hop split the audience generationally, it was the favored accompaniment to seduction for many fans, whose number grew even greater when 1986's "Stop to Love" pushed him through the pop-crossover barrier once and for all. Greatest Hits summarizes the days when he ruled the world. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Given Luther Vandross's precarious state of health at the time of its release, Dance With My Father's title track--a tale of yearning for a lost loved one--takes on added poignancy. It's something of a centerpiece on an album that moves in several directions, reaching for varied constituencies, while ultimately staying focused on Vandross's trademark buttery vocals. In addition to "Dance," there's more adult-contemporary balladry ("Buy Me a Rose"), lightly sassy soul ("If I Didn't Know Better"), and a number of collaborations with hip-hoppers that often work surprisingly well. While suspending disbelief is hard when considering Luther and Foxy Brown as a couple ("If It Ain't One Thing"), remakes of soft-R&B classics with Beyonce Knowles and Busta Rhymes prove to be highlights. With the Destiny's Child singer, Vandross actually improves on the familiar Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway take of "The Closer I Get to You," turning in a cut that recalls his slow-burning signature reworking of "A House is Not a Home." A languid turn at "Lovely Day," with a purring Busta, works almost as well. (The "Part II" remix is superfluous, however.) Otherwise, Dance is in the vein of post-`80s Vandross discs, and guaranteed to please fans. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Dance with My Father is by far the greatest CD .......2006-07-02
The people who appear on this CD are inspirational and come across in ways that never caught my attention before. Beyonce is a treasure and has never sounded better to me, than when her voice blends so perfectly with Luther's voice. What they did with," The Closer I Get To You" is mind blowing!!! I never thought that song could be better than the original version! The bass was a great touch. If you never purchased a Luther Vandross CD before, don't miss this one!
A Few Bright Moments.......2006-03-03
The best songs on this album are "If It Ain't One Thing" with guest singer Foxy Brown, "Buy Me a Rose," "The Closer I get to You" with guest singer Beyonce Knowles, "Lovely Day" with guest singer Busta Rhymes, which may be the best song on this CD, "Dance with My Father," "Hit It Again" with Queen Latifah, and "They Said You Needed Me." These are only seven of the fourteen songs. Of these seven songs, four have featured artists. The problem I have with this album is that the rest of the music is average and unremarkable.
Luther managed to put enough power into the song "Dance with My Father" to gain the 2004 Grammy for "Song of the Year," deservedly so. This album also gained Vandross his fourth and final Best Male R&B Vocal Performance Grammy in 2004. This album was also Vandross's first to reach number one on the Billboard chart. This recognition is for the powerful music on this CD.
Luther Vandross has always been a crooner with an incredible ability to appeal to female listeners. I suspect that the better songs on this album will provide appeal to Luther Vandross's traditional fans and many casual fans. However, Luther Vandross failed to put himself into many of these songs, and the lack of inspiration shows. I recommend you borrow a copy of this album or listen to samples before buying it. Good luck!

There are probably more, but those eleven are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. You really couldn't go wrong with either collection, but having both would be incredibly redundant. 'She's So Good To Me', which I hadn't heard in 18 years until this album was released, has a lot do to with my preference for this one. There are also songs from the Power Of Love album, not yet released when the first 2-disc set was released, as well as 'For You To Love', and 'Wait for Love' that tipped the scales in this album's favor. Either album is great, but I wouldn't recommend getting both unless you're an absolute Luther Vandross completionist.

With this 1981 debut, former session and jingle singer Luther Vandross ushered in a new, lush, and shamelessly romantic era of male R&B--from the opening kick of "Never Too Much" to the sweeping ecstasy of his cover of "A House Is Not a Home" (covering pop standards would become one of Luther's trademarks). Never Too Much showcases seamless song craft, impeccable arrangements, and a voice that defines nuanced passion. Listen to Luther work his sensual magic and imagine a young Maxwell listening to Mom and Pop's albums and knowing that this is the way to get the girls. --Amy LindenCustomer Reviews:

the leader of his own thang.Hooking up with some of the best session musicians and singers in the business.A hookup lasting through later and many albums.Which is one of the things i liked about Luther.Keepin' the same group or core of people on each album. There's a security to that.A familiar/particular sound.
One of those musicians---Marcus Miller(The best bassist ever)
Leads those grooves on this album and many to come.Luther's partner in crime. When they get together. It's magic.
Never too much-Maybe Luther's sig.song. Is a classic
Sugar and Spice-Great anthem about finding your love and doin' what it takes to be wit' them
Don't you know that?-Confessing your love and devotion
I've been workin'-Needing love after the workday is through
Killer bassline. Hell! All Marcus's are killer
She's a superlady-Title says it all.A Woman all man must have and need
Until you stopped loving me-Breakup and Heartbreak
A House is not a home-A beautiful remake in a line of others that Luther will do on every album. It had me weeping months ago.
Cause his death finally sunk in.
This album is the first in what I like to call "Gettin' to know Luther trilogy"Which are his first four albums. They sum up the fact that he's "LUTHER"
Luther was- Hell! Is my fav.sing.Every since I could walk,I knew of this man from my parents.I'm 25 now.So Luther was apart of my 80's /90's childhood. His passing makes you appreaciate him more. But for me.I always appreaciated him when he was alive.
Listening to all his albums back to back ,all day,non-stop.
He had a voice like no other.Original and cool.I liked his style and approached to the music.I'll miss him and forever and for always. Buy this album y'all!!!!

My Number One.......2007-06-20
And I especially treasure this 'live album' because I never had the chance to see him perform on stage.Disappointed initially that it wasn't made into a music video, I found that with no visual distractions, the senses are more alert to every word, every pause, every scream in the crowd. To just hear him talk was thrilling. And I was laughing at his jokes!
This album is like Luther's musical history. Opening with 'Never Too Much', the song which catapulted him to fame, then a slower version of 'Here and Now' and then sharing some jokes with Kevin Owens and his
background singers before continuing with the seductive 'Take You Out'.
The ballads 'Love Won't Let Me Wait' and 'superstar' are stunningly beautifully ( there won't be enough adjectives to describe them ) sung as only Luther can do.
The audience was screaming ' We love you Luther' throughout the performance and I felt like doing the same too.By the time he had finished 'If Only For One Night', 'A House Is Not A Home' and 'Glow Of Love' and said "goodnight everybody, thanks for coming" , I was left speechless and breathless as if I was sitting right there in the audience.
It's been two years since he's been gone but he's still My Number One.
AN AWESOME END TO A STELLAR CAREER.......2007-02-21
Suffice it to say I've enjoyed MOST of his output. Vocally, he is the
last of the great male R&B vocalists, IMHO. No one since has come close
to his silky, sensitive yet powerful vocalizing. That said, I think this
CD stands as one of LV's very best. It has everything you want in a
live CD: great sound, great song selection, AMAZING vocals and that vibe
that makes you wish you'd been there that night. I highly recommend it
to Luther fans everywhere. Listen to the soundclips and see for yourself.
We miss you Luther, and we'll never forget you!

Front row center can have you spellbound....but I will admit...His concert was good...but I didn't know a single song, except "A House Is Not A Home" !! I was shamed...and... I was not a fan of his. So I went with a looking and inquiring mind to hear this creamy voiced singer.
I was not disappointed... but kept waiting for the signature song. It finally came with the theatrics and Mr. Vandross walking across the stage from left to right with intermittenent sounds of ""Oh""... in front of the microphone then to the other side and back in front of the microphone with another loud ""Oh"". My mind said..... He's setting us up for the kill...and he did more than that. I felt like someone just had made love to me, begged me. seduced me, and caressed my mind...first...then body ...and then soul. This man knew how to use his voice , was truly Gifted and A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. His backup singers were absent and the soul catching , dramatic voice and sounds of Luther were there alone on the stage (not to forget the band).
I came thee seeking, and I found... However while the crowd gave him a standing ovation for his intrepretation of a song of a man in love with a woman that had made a mistake.......I just melted in my resolve and knew that I would be a life long believer and fan of Luther Vandross.
Being in the front row center seat...Mr Vandross had a good view of my calm reactions (being I didn't know any of the songs he sang...so I just relaxed and sat back in my seat to be entertained.) When the evening was over...he clapped with the audience....thanked them for coming...and before he left the stage...Mr Luther Vandross looked RIGHT AT ME....SMILED HIS PEARLY WHITES AND SAID """GOODNIGHT"""................. Now I must admit the concert and A House Is Not A Home ..blew me away, but for him to say Goodnight......left no doubt in my mind...I was looked at and smiled by a celebrity last....and by a GENTLEMAN first!!!!!
Now you have read my story of me and Mr.Luther Vandross. I went out after that concert and bought mostof all the songs he recorded..and played them until they got scratched up. The DVD at Wembly was EXCELLENT.....the man can dance when he wants too.(smile) I just wish someone would make a dvd of this cd available...so far I have heard nothing...but I brought this cd and it's **7 STAR PERFECT**. I've played it over and over and over again. Superstar is his favorite to do and Nat Adderly is.....out of this world.... and nobody does it better than Luther..someone on here wrote "Only Luther can outdo Luther." Then I accidently left it at my daughter's house, but not to be dismayed...just got another copy. So I will eventually have 2 copies of this magnificent cd of the Late Luther Vandross. I have the studio version of most of these songs on this cd. but hearing him do it ""Live "", packs such a powerful punch !!!!I know that he danced with his father again... when he saw him ....and is now waiting for his mother so that they all can dance together again ...... FOR ETERNITY.
Thanks for reading my long review....My favorite songs...they all are..but "Stop... to Love" and his Signature song are echoed in my mind FOREVER !!!

There is variety-"Anyone who had a heart" is sung along with Luther, a la Natalie Cole/NK Cole (Unforgettable), a reggae beat covers one song, a disco beat covers another. Not his best record--then again, none of them are, though every single one ought to be. Vandross was the first one to come down with Whitney's Syndrome, meaning he's got the chops, but not the taste. Not that he's got the chops to be Al Green (or, for that matter, Barry White), but Vandross on this disc is more frustrating than exhilarating. The man's got it in him, and sometimes, you wonder if he'll ever find it. --Robert WilonskyCustomer Reviews:

Second Time Around Makes The CD.......2006-06-12
In 1976 Luther Vandross first released this song, then titled "The 2nd Time Around" for the now defunct Cotillion Record label. Cotillion operated from 1960 - 1985 as a subsidiary of Atlantic Records.
Luther and his then three member group, recorded two albums on the Cotillion label under the name LUTHER. The album containing this song (Cotillion SD 9907) was self titled "Luther" also, and contained seven songs, all written by Mr Vandross. The most memorable song was "The 2nd Time Around", (side one, song #2, six minutes, twenty five seconds long).
After receiving much fan fare and questions as a solo artist about The 2nd Time Around, Luther decided to re-release the song. I guess that explains the slight change in the title of the song. However, the words and music are still the same. Needless to say, the song is priceless and pure Luther!
Now, if you go waaaaay back with Luther as I do, even before the group Change and songs The Glow of Love and Searching, this cd is a must.
The re-release of track #9 is timeless. It makes the cd a FIVE! Currently this song is not available elsewhere, on any other Luther cds or boxed sets.

The classiest of R&B's lover men, Luther Vandross eschews the sweaty soul intensity of his predecessors for a silky-smooth sound that achieves its romantic aims nonetheless. In the hands of a lesser artist, Vandross's narrow focus on love songs would seem restrictive, but he somehow finds endlessly entertaining ways of conveying simple messages like "I love you," "I miss you," and "Why did you leave me?" The Best of Love is just that--a 20-song retrospective that clocks Vandross's brilliant career through its first decade, including such gems as his gorgeous reworking of the Bacharach-David chestnut "A House Is Not a Home," Smokey Robinson's "Since I Lost My Baby," and his own early hit "Never Too Much." Vandross was a staple on the R&B charts throughout the '80s, but the set culminates with "Here and Now," his 1989 crossover smash. Since then, Luther has belonged to everyone; this set shows it should have been that way all along. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:

The cover of Marvin Gaye's If This World Were Mine sounds like it's on Quaaludes, simply soporific. The same could be said of Superstar, which is a dreadful song to begin with and here is stretched to the point where you're begging it to stop. A House Is Not A Home is equally slow, but the production is sparse and Vandross is free to nurse the genuine emotion from it. The jewel on Disk One is `Til My Baby Comes Home, good funk and purpose. Disk Two provides much more to be happy about. Stop To Love cooks, So Amazing is a three-hankie masterpiece, Give Me A Reason is one of those satisfying feeling-bitter kickers, and Any Love has a beautiful, anthemic quality. In short, this two-CD anthology embodies Luther's career perfectly. With better management and material Vandross really could have deserved a 2-CD Best Of anthology. As it is, what you have here is enough material to fill a superb single CD Best Of anthology. As far as I'm concerned, that still makes it a value, and well worth getting.

In a way, it's a shame that Luther Vandross' Songs, his 1994 album of other people's hits, became the biggest hit of his career, for it obscured one of his greatest talents: songwriting. The best soul singer of the '80s is back with Your Secret Love, his first album of original, non-Christmas songs since 1993's Never Let Me Go. He hasn't lost his knack for big, emotional melodies and for scenarios that find happiness tantalizingly close, but still out of reach. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

Of course, his singing and I were old quite old friends. I owned several of his recordings on vinyl, but the record player was not in good shape any more.. Since then, I compensated by owning several 'collection' and 'best of' cds..
That was quite a long time ago, and since then, I have had the time to appreciate 'Your secret love'. The cd as a whole is really good contemporary music, and the ballads are wonderful, all of them winning my heart, and feel ever-new at every listening.
'It's hard for me to say' is my favourite song on the cd because the lyrics meant a lot to me at the time, but, above everything else, that powerful soul voice swept me off my feet. The whole album in fact is still a pleasant treat whenever I give it an attentive listening, which still is quite often. The epic ballad 'Crazy Love' still stops the world from revolving around me as the intense singing catches hold of me.. Well, as does the rest of the songs in this album. How could it be otherwise?
It was no secret for anyone who had an ear for music that Luther Vandross had the one of the best voice of the last decades, if not the best. But more than that was his incredible ability to mold with his unique velvet voice every ordinary word into a guilty pleasure for our senses. Did the man sing at home instead of talk? Abilities such as his were unique indeed, as he proved by giving new life to the songs he covered, and most importantly, by turning all his songs into his precious legacy to the world of music.
Sometimes, I think about him, but I guess I can't even wonder what it must have felt like for him knowing how well he could sing. Even now, it feels like it was too easy for him.. His own voice was his masterpiece, the very essence that would give birth to his everlasting songs.
Luther Vandross, wherever you are today, you will always be missed. And I shall always secretly wish I were you.

Luther's return to form.......2004-08-03
There is some terrific material here, especially the yearning title track (#52 Pop, #5 R&B) and the old-fashioned "I Can Make It Better" (#80 Pop, #15 R&B) - both of which were justifiable single releases. "Love Don't Love You," "Hard For Me To Say," and "This Time I'm Right" are just as good, and the attempted hip hop crossover "I Can't Wait No Longer" works far better than it should. Interestingly, "Crazy Love" and "Too Proud To Beg" are not covers of the songs performed, respectively, by Van Morrison and the Temptations, but are well-written, original compositions that are impeccably performed and produced.
I wouldn't be surprised if the two actual cover songs, "Knocks Me Off My Feet" and "Goin' Out of My Head," were leftovers from the Songs sessions. However, that's not a complaint as both tracks are standouts - especially "Knocks Me Off My Feet," which will make you wish Luther would record an entire album of Stevie Wonder's material. Really, the only songs that miss the boat with me are the dragging "Nobody To Love" (which suffers from an ineffective hook) and the lame duet "Whether or Not the World Gets Better" (which features some of his lamest lyrics and Lisa Fischer doing a bad Mariah impression), however even these songs remain tolerable. During his 15 years with Sony Luther rarely released an album that wasn't a solid effort, and YOUR SECRET LOVE is no exception.

Overall this is an impressive work from my man, an elegant album kind of in the Quiet Storm vein, playable with all moods and will easily please fans of `Songs' or just R&B in general.
LUTHER BACK ON FORM.......2002-03-03
this is a soft, romantic album, with luther seeming happy and content, and it works in late night scenarios if you know what i mean. the higlights are the last 2 songs, "goin out of my head" and "knocks me off my feet", which are incredible. there are many other great songs present here too, including the title track.
the only blip is the "lets do this" track, with a poor female rapper, this is out of place and breaks up the flow of the cd.
but overall this is by far one of luthers most enjoyable albums.
