Fans who care enough to time-travel back to Brian McKnight's self-titled 1992 debut will find that, in the beginning, it was all about amore; the smooth R&B lothario's later hip-hop and jazz leanings seem a long way off. "These songs were written by a young man who grew up in the '70s and '80s," the still-humble balladeer writes in the liner notes. "The music represents those influences on my life and times." Thus, Brian McKnight is best thought of as a shiny, pleasingly rangy Babyface record, or else an escape hatch for soul-leaning record buyers on the brink of boredom with Boyz II Men (they also happened to be on the brink of a worthy new discovery). This 13-song set plays pleasingly and seductively the full way through, with "The Way Loves Goes" and "One Last Cry" best displaying the artist's trademark vocal magic. The final two tracks are given over to McKnight's still sturdy spiritual amore--"Oh Lord" and "My Prayer," steeped in passion, land on the ears like a little slices of heaven. -Tammy La Gorce

A funny thing happens around track three of Ten, Brian McKnight's intricate, nuanced, and very grown-up follow-up to 2005's Gemini: he starts sounding like Daryl Hall. It's a blip overall, but it's indicative of McKnight's chameleon-like way with an R&B song. At times he stands unapologetically in the shadows of Marvin Gaye (see "Shoulda Been Lovin' You"), at times he tries on Luther Vandross's silky tones ("Don't Take Your Love Away"), and at times he leans in a direction that seems carved from a cross-section of the two ("Holdin' On"). The dip into Daryl Hall is a neat addition--a cool swerve that should protect McKnight from predictability charges. More than that, it demonstrates a clear-eyed artistic approach. It doesn't necessarily make him a smooth-singing maverick, though. Tim & Bob, the studio wizards who helped score hits for Bobby Valentino, Donell Jones, and others, cowrote four of Ten's strongest tracks, the radio hit "Used To Be My Girl" among them. And Rascal Flatts, the country act, teams up for the flag-waving, well-intentioned "Red, White, and Blue." McKnight's maneuvers, shot through with versatility, haven't failed him yet; on a scale of one to ten, Ten rates a nine. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description

Disappointing.......2007-04-24
I think Brian needs to get back to his real roots - great ballads and smooth uptempo grooves with great harmony and nice chord changes. He seems also to have almost completely lost that jazz edge that he had before. It seems as though he is simply going for commercial success. The ironic question is - how successful have his recent albums been? How big have his collaborations with rappers and flavour-of-the-month producers been? Not very. I am afraid that "10" won't do very well either. So regrettably I won't be buying this album.

The genius of At Last...The Duets Album is in its matchups and cross-pollinations. If producer Walter Afanasieff weren't already a much sought after music man--check out his arrangements here if his talents are unfamiliar--he might have built a brilliant career as a modern-day cupid. These are covers with a what-if factor (what if Brian McKnight covers Wham!? What if Richard Marx covered Elton John?) you don't want to miss: LeAnn Rimes wraps Bryan Adams' anthem-y "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" in rainy-day heartache; Yolanda Adams reaches for the stars in a rendition of R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" as inspiring as the original; Barbra Streisand waltzes through "The Music That Makes Me Dance" like the years since her heyday haven't mattered; and Earth, Wind & Fire dig the depth out of Raphael Saadiq's "The Way You Move." This, of course, is to say nothing of the sensuality brought to these collaborations by the goldilocked sax man himself. As with all Kenny G projects, the music is smoother than a frappuccino and oddly suited to a soap opera living room set; its swirls, swells, and crescendos seem meant to fall on bejeweled ears in pretty, carefully appointed spaces only. All-instrumental tracks like "Don't Know Why" with David Benoit and "Pick Up the Pieces" with David Sanborn have a fun look-at-me-sharing-the-spotlight quality, but in the end Chaka Khan puts across her point most convincingly: She, not Christina Aguilera, should have sung "Beautiful" to begin with. -Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:

If you appreciate great musicians coming together to produce some really listenable music, (and I do mean, over and over without ear fatigue), then this CD is for you! I only hope he doesn't stop here. I hope he comes out with more duet albums in the future. Maybe some Chicago, Rascal Flatts, Peter Cetera, Tower of Power, and any number of other great voices in the business!
My favorite is the remix of "The Way You Move"...nice grooves in there! If I had one complaint, it would be that the songs didn't actually line up in the order on which they were listed on the CD cover. Other than that, it's at the top of my favorites in my library of 3,000+ CDs!
It is OK ! Next time, team up with Anita Baker and Regina Belle !.......2006-05-28

In addition to candles, white wine, and a brand new roll of toilet paper, every bachelor pad should be equipped with a Brian McKnight CD. Conveniently, his From There to Here, 1989-2002 greatest hits collection provides one-stop shopping of the sexiest, smoochiest ballads known to humankind. McKnight may be guilty of excessive sentimentality, but damn if he can't sing; even his most saccharine moments are redeemed by his buttery vocals and absolute earnestness. Two new songs--"Let Me Love You" and "The Way I Do"--bookend the collection. But what's in between has put the Buffalo native on the R&B map, especially his gorgeous cover of Van Morrison's "Crazy Love," and his plaintive duet with Vanessa Williams on "Love Is." Indeed, there's abundant love on offer, and McKnight--who also wrote, played, and/or produced these various songs--has given the booty call its most sumptuous soundtrack. --Kim HughesAlbum Details

Back Again At One.......2007-06-25
Brian McKnight's 2007 Gold, part of Universal double-album greatest hits series, is a deep and soulful reflection of Brian's era from Universal. The collection includes nearly 30 of his best tracks. The collection delivers nicely to newcomers, while adding on what made his previous hits record From There To Here 1992-2002. The songs have all been remastered well, and include some new tracks from his albums that were overlooked. The collection includes soul and somber tracks like One Last Cry, Back At One, to his deep and driven Anytime. The collection also expands onto his last two Universal records Gemini and U-Turn, featuring standout tracks Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda, and Win from the Cuba Gooding Jr. film Men Of Honor. Although the album delivers nicely, there are still some great tracks I wish could've been highlighted but sadly overshadowed, especially his sensual duet Love Is with Vanessa Williams which was featured on his last hits record, and tracks from his latest record 10 like Used To Be My Girl.
Despite a few overlooked songs, Brian McKnight's Gold follows well at showcasing a great singer and some of the best R&B tracks in the past decade. It doesn't draw in too much as a must buy for new fans, as well as it remains a great add-on for die hard fans. It just makes the mark, but doesn't completely feel like it is back at one.

Definitive Collection.......2007-03-09
But out of the 29 songs, the following 9 aren't readily available on his standard releases:
I'll Take her
Whenever you call
Distant lover
Win
Over and over again
Over
Careless Whisper
Don't lie
To you
So this compilation encapsulates songs that were featured on soundtracks, other artists' albums and bonus tracks from Brian's Japanese editions albums.
The only disappointment I have with this release is that the 2 bonus tracks from the Japanese edition of Gemini (Don't lie & Sexy) were not included. Otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars.
But apart from that, this is quite a definitive collection of his popular and rare materials and is a must-have for all Brian McKnight fans!

Quiet Storm never dies, although many of its love-man practitioners' discs blend together into a kind of ardent wallpaper. So it's a bit of a surprise to find Brian McKnight's fourth album, Back at One asserting itself as a committed, highly listenable sample of the genre. Putting his writing skills to work, McKnight manages to make one midtempo plaint after another stand out from its brothers on the disc. In combination with his assured but never overbearing vocals, songs such as the title number, "Last Dance," and "6, 8, 12" trump anything Babyface has done lately. McKnight makes a big claim on the style with this excellent album. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Closer to 4 stars than 3.......2006-08-26
"Back at One" is really an enjoyable album. I gave it a close listen, and I was impressed. The fillers are few, and the music is good. "Played Yourself" is an Ok song, but it was one of the lesser quality songs on the album. This track is about a woman who thinks she playing a man, but he knows about it. The production is alright. I liked "Last Dance". It drove me to listen to the rest of the album, since this is the first song on the album. His vocals are good, and so is the production. The title track was the only song released from this album, but it was very, very successful, and I see why. This song has very nice lyrics, the piano arrangement is good, and Brian isn't as breathy as he is in most songs. He should cut that out from his singing because it takes away from his voice. Anyway, "Back at One" has been the song at many a wedding. He includes a vey nice falsetto in the song, which adds to the emotion he is trying to convey. "Home" is definitely worth mentioning. Usually, Brian includes a track about God on his albums, and this is that song. What stands out most in this song is the lyrics. He is talking directly to God, and he sings with such sincerity. "Lonely" and "Cherish" are very nice love songs. The lyrics are memorable, and the production and vocals go well with these pretty songs.
I would recommend this album to R&B fans because it is quality work and I believe most would find it enojoyable. Brian showcases a lot of talent with this recording and it made me appreciate him so much more as an artist.

Slight departure from his best :-l.......2006-05-03
It's got some great songs Last Dance, You Could Be The One and of course the fantastic and beautiful hit, Back At One. He's so talented and a great writer and musician, but something is lacking here - could be lack of great stand out songs. However, if you are a fan of his, still grab this because it's still worth it. If you aren't a fan, you soon will be when you hear his voice.
Wow, what happened ...?.......2006-02-15
On this album, he has a mix of smooth, slow grooves, heavy ballads and contemporary jazz-flavored R&B. I think what set him apart at the time of this release circa late 1999-early 2000 was the fact he wasn't just another crooner making pop, radio-friendly music.
The title track is the heart-felt ballad that was actually pretty big back in the day. Definitely a Valentine's Day kind of song.
I think I fell in love with more of his smooth grooves though ... the stuff you can turn down the lights to after a hard day of work and unwind to ... you know, those precious moments of the day when you're trying to get right so you can go out and deal with the outside world again.
If that's the kind of atmosphere you like, listen to laid back tracks "Stay" (the best song on the album!), "Lonely", "Cherish" and "Shall We Begin."
Also, the single "6,8,12" is not to be slept on.
Again, this album isn't a party starter (unless you're setting the mood to put it down on that special someone).
When I think about it, this is actually R&B of a dying breed -- high quality stuff the ladies and fellas can groove to.
Too much R&B tries to just grab one group or the other. BM's Back at One succeeds at bringing the two together.
Highly recommended LP.
I still listen to this album from time to time and I'm continually amazed by how much BM fell off afterward. Does anyone even hear buzz about new LPs from BM anymore? The last BM song I can even remember hearing on radio or in a video was "Love of My Life" back in 2001 off of the "Superhero" LP.
Vintage stuff, but what happened to him after that?
One of Brian's Best.......2005-07-26
I'm only going to give 10/10 for songs which are out of this world....
Last Dance - (8.9/10) - This song is an awesome start to the album. Sets the mood of the album in a perfect manner. This song is extremely good.
Stay - (7.5/10) - This song is quite good, but nothing less and nothing more. Some people may like it a lot.
Played Yourself - (6/10) - Brian's attempt at high tempo R&B, its an OK song. Nothing special...
Bact At One - (9.5/10) - This is one of the biggest songs of the album. Very soulful and a great tune. It will fit easily into your top "slow jamz" list. Classic Song.
Stay Or Let It Go - (6/10) - This song has moments that are good but overall an OK song.
6,8,12 - (11/10) - This is when you get hit in the face with the best song in the album. It has classic written all over it. You can't get any better with the soulful "humming" in the background and the lyrics. The tune is crazily good. This is definitely one of my BEST SOUL SONGS EVER. One of the few songs that are in the same bracket as this (for me) is "Dontchange" by Musiq.
You Could Be The One - (7/10) - Another attempt at higher tempo R&B. Isn't great but I wouldn't press skip. Brian is better at slow jamz.
Shall We Begin - (7/10) - Yet another high tempo songs. It's better than the average song you hear on tv, but not special.
Gothic Interlude - (No Review) - LoL this reminds me of the Mortal Kombat game's music. It's only an interlude.
Can You Read My Mind - (7.9) - A decent midtempo song.
Lonely - (9.5/10) - A song with great emotion. This is one of the best songs of the album. The lyrics are on par with 6,8,12. Listen to this when you have lost someone special. Awesome song all over.
Cherish - (10/10) - Yet another quality slow jam. I especially like it when he goes "La La La La La". It's a really relaxing song.
Home - (8/10) - A soft song with not too many instruments. Quite relaxing. Follows well from Cherish. A good way to end the album.
Overall Verdict: This album is AWESOME ALL OVER... so many good slow jamz. The uptempo songs bring the album down a little but not enuff to take it away from the 5 star bracket. This is one of my favourite RNB/Soul albums.
Brian McKnight is the Don of all Soul Dons. His best songs are way better than the likes of Babyface's greatest songs.

Soul crooner Brian Mcknight, the younger brother of Take 6's Claude Mcknight, sings in a silky, seductive purr. He has a sweet, elastic tenor and a well-honed harmonic instinct that comes from being an accomplished keyboardist. Unfortunately, he rarely shifts gears, and remains stuck in that breathy, drawn-out crooning style for most of this album, I Remember You, the follow-up to his 1992 self-titled gold debut. It doesn't help matters that his songwriting lacks well-defined melodic or lyric hooks; too often the songs merely drift through pretty but amorphous chord changes. As a result, his performances quickly evaporate from the memory without leaving much impression. Like his biggest hero, Stevie Wonder, Mcknight wrote, arranged, produced, performed, and sang almost everything by himself on this recording, and his arrangements are full of clever Wonderisms--layered synthesizers, electric-piano motifs, and high-tenor embellishments. Mcknight always sings as if he's in the throes of a passionate swoon and never as if he's merely having a normal conversation; thus we never get to hear the transition from one to the other. And just as women are justly suspicious of men who are always in the seduction mode, so are album listeners. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

Crazy Love is the absolute standout on this; it's so mellow and sexy and fantastic bedroom music. Also my other favourites are Must Be Love, Kiss Your Love Goodbye and Day The Earth Stood Still. One thing I notice he does, is always sing within good range so he's staying safe and choosing the kind of material to release that will keep him sounding good. I absolutely love this kind of late night Quiet Storm and fans of his won't be disappointed in this cd. It delivers all the good kind of music we've come to love from him, and while it may not be his best cd, it's still a favourite with me.

Brian McKnight still works his patented platinum midtempo grooves on his sixth album, but here he turns the beat around a bit and mixes it up with some new partners. For strange bedfellows, check out "My Kind of Girl," a collaboration with Justin Timberlake. The teaming of the Prince of Pimple Pop and the veteran R&B star is a head-scratcher on paper, but it sure sounds sweet as they wrap their voices around a gentle acoustic-tinged track that floats with effortless ease. McKnight, who handles most production, writing, and instrumental chores, rocks out on the title track and throws down with Nate Dogg on the pulsating "Don't Know Where to Start." It all proves that McKnight can create make-out music for housewives and homeboys alike. --Amy LindenCustomer Reviews:

While I've had this cd since it's release, it did take one or two listens to before I really decided I loved it. It's full of great songs and there is no bad one here. In particular I love, Don't Know Where To Start, Everything, For You and the title track Superhero. I never get tired of listening to him, and I never get tired of this cd. It's beautiful and a must for all Brian McKnight fans. I really love it and I feel that it's one of his best.

This cd has a good mix of fast tunes (Groovin tonight, Don't know where to start) and vintage Brian mcknight ballads (Still, Everything).
His collaborations with Justin T, the St. Lunatics, and Nate Dogg were all really well done and are sure to get you up and dancing.
My kinda girl, Love of my life, Everything, and Biggest part of me were my favourite songs on this cd.
It may take a few listens but this cd is full of great songs.
A good release for Mr McKnight.......2003-05-07
notable tracks:
-Superhero Prelude: okay its only an intro, but i liked it. Orchestration that builds up the suspense.
-What's It Gonna Be - Good jazzy intro that leads to good chorus
-Superhero - haha! now this is really really different song from most Brian McKnight songs.Strangly enough i found it pretty good
-still - a good ballad with good piano chords, what you'd expect on any Brian Mcknight album
- Biggest part of me - another good ballad to listen to.
-When Will I See you Again - Sad, dark ballad (ft Bebe Winans?) One Of my favourites
-For you - short song but it's pretty good, easy on the eardrum!
As an overall album, it lacks in some ways, but as a long time fan it was good see him release an album with good ballads as usual! :) The dance tracks Don't know where to start,
Groovin Tongiht and Superhero (even though i liked it) seem to be out of place. It's album that any Brian mcknight fan would want.

On tracks like 'Here With You', 'What We Do Here', & my personal favorite 'Everything I Do', its clear to see his unique style and outstanding vocals. While this album doesnt quite match 'Superhero' it still has alot to offer.
Another excellent record from an incredibly talented artist.
