On this 1980 tour de force, Prince produced the template for most of his '80s albums: a mixture of lust and longing, synth pop combined with gut bucket rock and roll. Although this was his third CD, Dirty Mind was the one that truly established "When You Were Mine," which still ranks as one of his best songs, ever. The gender- and race-bending Dirty Mind was nasty and freaky--and you could dance to it. Still can. --Amy Linden

5 out of 5 stars This is where the dam broke..........2007-07-27

After his second record, it was put-up or shut-up for Prince. "Dirty Mind" marks the spot where he decided to go for broke. Was pop music to go on being merely coy and suggestive or was it going to be explicit? Prince made that hard left turn on this record and the whole of pop culture followed along with him, hip-hop and all...

...And none of it would have worked if the music wouldn't have been so convincing. Slick, greasy funk the whole way, yet Prince keeps it tight and concise. It's spiked with rock, just the way Sly, Rick and George had done. The difference with Prince was that the sound was kept close to your ear. There's no expansion to the sound, no jamming going on, it's not designed for a hockey rink. He's right in the room with you, not aiming for the cheap seats.

Lyrically, everything gets the bird. You got Prince color-by-numbered into your blaxploitation hetero freak fantasy? Not going to happen. ("When U Were Mine," falsetto vocals.) Shunning politics for more immediate pop thrills? Nyet. ("Partyup," "Uptown.") Sex within your frat-house range of soft-core taboos? Not today. ("Sister.") This record pushed all the buttons back then, and it's still astonishing for its nerve. Prince had balls, and this was the first time you got to hear them. Rick James, Schoolly-D, N.W.A., Eminem, and every lick-em-up-and-down R&B singer since has followed his lead.

But you don't care, really. You just want to know: is my butt gonna shake when I put this one on? I can tell you "yes" 'til I'm blue in the face, but you've got to drop the ten bucks and find out for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Dirty Mind.......2007-07-09

Just classic Prince. Nothing more needs to be said. Must have for anyone claiming to be a Prince fan.

5 out of 5 stars Turning Point of a genius..........2007-06-06

The title track say's it all. Even though it was his third album...this was like his first album... the definitive album in PRN's career..."For you" and "Prince"(ALBUMS 1 & 2) were filled with a more "POP" flavor but "Dirty Mind" was Prince on stage in a long trench coat, bikini briefs, and a lot of what made Prince ~ Prince...SEXUALITY. Track 2 "When You Were Mine" is still one of my fav's from him and track 4 "Gotta Broken Heart" was a sign of things to come...THE ART OF THE FALSETTO BALLAD...Prince is as complete of an artist as we"ll ever see! I particualrly love the way the album makes you fell as if you're in the studio with him by mixing the songs together like a stage show. Track 5 "Uptown" was his anthum by saying "free your sexual mind, believe in god, and ignore color lines! This is the album that got everybody to ask..."is he straight or gay, is he a man or woman, is he really on stage doing and wearing that???" The answer thank GOD to all the above was YESS! Well before it's time with other anthums like "Head" talking about...well...Head(I've always felt like "Let's Pretend We're Married" was like a part 2 of this song) and "Sister" walks the edge more than a little( He is actually talking about a foster/step sister type)..."Party Up" is a perfect way to end this album. With screaming Synths' and crazy rock guitar and his signature gift from god of a voice, this is the definitive recording from Prince. It was the one that screamed to us saying..."BEWARE ...i've got talent and indviduality and i'm not afraid to use them!"

3 out of 5 stars Prince...Dirty Mind..........2007-02-15

This was another of the re-mastered Prince albums that I bought for ($7US). The signature song on this disc: Head! Overall though, it was my least favorite albums due to his subject matter. Let's be frank, he left nothing out on this one, and set a standard for all others to follow. Three stars!!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Album.......2006-09-03

Prince's 1980 album DIRTY MIND is one of his best albums from his decades long career. The album features a more stripped back production, but the music is still pure soul/funk. There are some really memorable, classic Prince jams here such as "When You Were Mine", "Head", "Uptown" and the title track. It's a brisk album at 8 songs, but all are integral to this album. Prince produced, arranged and composed the whole album. He found success starting with this cd, his third. Deservingly so, this is a classic album that may be his best album.

5 out of 5 stars Still Smokin.......2007-07-24

Whoa now, Heard this back when it first came out and I still bump it from time to time nowadays. Free Mystikal

5 out of 5 stars Mystikal first rapper i got into.......2005-04-03

Im from Westbank New Orleans (Harvey) so this album was pretty big around there. This is by far Mystikal's best album. His flow is fast, slow, loud, and soft...he keeps it fresh, changing up his flow throughout the song. The beats are so shyve, much better than P's stuff when he went to No Limit. From the dark beats of Murderer and Mind of Mystikal to the flava of Yall aint ready yet and Here I go, Mystikal never ceases to impress me. This album was made when he was on the top of his game, and his album shows it. 10/10.

5 out of 5 stars At His Best.......2005-03-31

Mystikal is definitely at his best on this album nowadays Kal ain't all that and of course with his rape charges i guess he put out the greatest hits to get some kind of an appeal goin(haha) yea thats kinda wrong but hey its the truth i guess but this album along with "Unpredictable" and "Ghetto Fabulous" are his absolute best works I have all 3 and still bump every one of them definitely worth your money Pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars MYSTIKAL'S BEST ALBUM.......2005-01-19

This album is awesome! The best songs are "Ya'll Ain't Ready Yet", "Beware", "Mr. Hood Critic", "I'm", "Out That Boot Camp Clicc", "Here I Go" & "Ya'll Ain't Ready Yet (Remix)". This album is definately worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars Best Mystikal album EVER!!!.......2005-01-09

This mystikal album ain't nuthin' like the rest of his albums. In this album, he doesn't scream as much and he he raps decently fast. His flows are more layed back in this one. Like, in the song, "murderer" he starts off real layed back and slow with "muthaf**kin' murderah, shot my f**kin' brotha." Then loud and mad soundin' with "BUT WHEN I FIND HIM I'M A GET THAT MUTHAF**KA!!!" This is by far the best mystikal album ever. I haven't found it in any stores lately, though so you might want to get it soon.

THE BEATS ARE NICE ON THIS DISC. SOME OF THE TRACKS SOUNDS "PASTED" TOGETHER. OVER ALL IT'S A DECENT DISC. GREAT FOR DOWN SOUTH FANS.
HOWEVER THIS CD IS FORM "PAID IN PARTIAL", SO TRY TO FIND A BOOTLEG OR USED COPY, SEEING AS HOW THE REAL TALENT, THE ARTISTS, PROBABLY WILL NOT BE PAID!

5 out of 5 stars Portion Control's 1991 album .......2006-11-16

Portion Control is easily one of THE most influential music groups in Electronic Music History. From their full-length LP debut, 1982's "I Staggered Mentally" on through the 80's, as well as their early 90's endeavours as 'Solar Enemy', the band has been a constant influence and anchor point for other bands which themselves are considered anchors. Band's like Skinny Puppy, Front 242, Front Line Assembly, and a host of other Industrial and E.B.M. bands that assulted the airwaves and dancefloors through out the 80's on labels like Nettwerk and Wax Trax all owe an enormous debt to the original pioneers of Portion Control. Just listen to their debut "I Staggered Mentally" and you'll hear the blue-print for every Industrial/E.B.M./Synth-Punk band to follow.

After a 5 year span between their last full-length album "Psycho-Bod Saves The World" in 1986, to "Dirty vs. Universe" (a.k.a. "Fastest Reflexes") released under the name 'Solar Enemy', Portion Control are back in form as a continuing influential band.

Portion Control have recently released an amazing 5 CD Box Set of ALL of their vinyl releases (with the exception of a live 10" vinyl release titled "Live In Europe") which is jam packed with their amazingly influential and constantly innovative music.

And they also have just released (November 2006) a new album "Filthy White Guy"!

For detailed info see their site at [...] which includes a detailed discography as well as band bio and song snippets.

4 out of 5 stars KOOP DID IT AGAIN.......2006-09-11

KOOPSTA KNICCA IS A REALLY TALENTED ARTIST TO ME FROM THE TIME HE USED TO BE WITH THE SIX UP UNTIL NOW. I HAVE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HIS CD'S AND THIS ONE IS PRETTY GOOD. ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT HE ALWAYS ENDS UP PUTTING SOME OF HIS OLD SONGS ON HIS NEW CD'S AND THAT CAN GET ANNOYING BECAUSE WHENEVER HE DROPS A NEW CD I WANT ALL NEW SONGS. AND HE USES OLD LYRICS TO NEW BEATS ON LIFE IN BONDAGE. BUT OTHER THAN THAT THIS CD IS DAMN GOOD PRODUCTION WISE AND LRYIC WISE. THERE ARE A FEW HIDDEN TRACKS AND THEY ARE BANGING TOO. THIS HAS BEEN HIS BEST CD SINCE HE LEFT THREE SIX THERE ARE A FEW SKITS WHERE HE ADDRESSES THREE SIX ABOUT NOT MENTIONING HIS NAME IN THE INTERVIEWS AND THAT REALLY SEEMS TO BOTHER HIM CAUSE HE SAY HE DID ALOT TO PUT MEMPHIS ON THE MAP. WHEN HE USED TO RIDE WIT THEM. ANYWAYS THIS CD IS A GREAT CD BUT I KNOW IT WILL NEVER GO BIG THE WAY KOOP WANTS IT TOO. DONT GIVE UP KOOP CAUSE U A TALENTED PERSON AND NOTHING CAN STOP U

3 out of 5 stars I like Koop but............2005-12-22

I like Koopsta Knicca a lot. I have been a big fan, ever since da Devil's Playground dropped-- one of the tightest Three 6 CD's and Koop's first solo project. He had DJ Paul behind him on that one and the production was great. Then he dropped the K Project, which was -really- hard to get into since the production was so horrible. Weak beats. He re-did lyrics from Devil's Playground on K-project with new beats.

THEN he dropped De Inevitable, and I was feelin him again. Good CD. But guess what.. he uses a lot of recycled lyrics again with new beats. I figured ok.. he just didn't like K Project and wanted to use some old lyrics. But on this CD he does it AGAIN... this CD has even MORE borrowed lyrics and songs from his first solo project, K project, etc. just done to new beats. He even goes all the way back to his old Three 6 Mafia days, taking verses he wrote for World Domination and rapping then again to new beats.

Don't get me wrong I am down for Koop and have been trying to support him, but it really seems like he's trying to cash in on the same damn lyrics/raps over and over again with different song titles and new albums. Anyone who has bought all of his CDs (now I have ALL 4 koop solo projects) will realize he is just taking the same material and doing it to new beats on every CD. It's kinda getting old. Get Da Devil's Playground, get De Inevitable, but SKIP this one and Da K Project... unless you want to hear the same stuff over and over.

Oh yeah, I do really like #9 though, "Everlast", where he has a 2Pac sample, the young and the restless theme music for a beat, and he raps about what happened with him in Memphis before and after he left Three 6.

5 out of 5 stars ALL-TIME BAY AREA NO LIMIT CLASSIC!!!!!.......2005-08-01

THIS IS SOME OF THE BEST ISHHHHH TA COME OUT THE BAY BACK IN THE EARLY 90'S. ALL THE NO LIMIT RELEASES BETWEEN 88 AND 98 WERE CLASSICS UNTIL THEY CHANGED UP TO A FAKE ARTIFICIAL FORMAT IN 2000 WITH THE NEW NO LIMIT BULL ISHHHHH!!!!! ANYONE WHO DOESN'T HAVE THIS IN THEY COLLECTION NEEDS TO SNATCH IT. THIS IS SOME SUPER RAW MASTER P MUSIC. AFTER LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM FOR PEOPLE JUST HEARING THIS TODAY IN 2005 INSTEAD IN 1992, YOU'RE GONNA BE LIKE WHAT THE F*** HAPPENED TO MASTER P NOWADAYS????? HE DEFINITELY HAD HIS OWN TREND AND STYLE UNTIL HE STARTED FOLLOWING THE CROWD. HE WAS TOO BLIND TO SEE IT I GUESS. I'LL STILL ALWAYS BE A NO LIMIT FAN BUT NOT A NEW NO LIMIT FAN. I LIKE NO LIMIT RECORDS WHEN IT WAS THE TANK LOGO WAAAAAY BEFORE THEY CHANGED THE TANK LOGO TO FACE TO THE RIGHT. ANYWAYS THIS ALBUM BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES TO THEM TIMES OF 1992. TIME FLEW BY SO QUICK. BUT FOR THOSE OF Y'ALL WHO THOUGHT NO LIMIT STARTED OFF IN THE DIRTY SOUTH YOU WRONG. NO LIMIT RECORDS STARTED IN 1988 IN RICHMOND, CALIFORNIA. THE CITY WHERE T.R.U. REALLY STARTED. REST IN PEACE TO BIG ED WHO'S ALSO ON HERE AS HE LAID SOME CLASSIC RAW LYRICS ON HERE. ALL THE PEOPLE ON T.R.U. BACK IN THESE DAYS MOSTLY DON'T RAP ANYMORE EXCEPT MASTER P, C-MURDER, AND SILKK. SOME OF THESE PEOPLE IN THEY GROUP DIDN'T RAP AND WAS JUST FOLKS. BUT THERE ARE CERTAIN ARTISTS THAT WERE ONLY FEATURED ON CERTAIN T.R.U. ALBUMS. MISSING FROM THIS T.R.U. ALBUM IS KING GEORGE, CALLI-G, AND MILKMAN. T.R.U. ACTUALLY FELL OFF AFTER "TRU 2 DA GAME" BUT REALLY FELL OFF AFTER THEY GOT RID OF MOST OF THE T.R.U. MEMBERS. BUT MASTER P SHOULD HAVE KEPT ALL THE ORIGINAL NO LIMIT ARTISTS PERIOD LIKE THE ORIGINAL T.R.U., LIL RIC, DANGEROUS DAME, SONYA C, BIG ED BEFORE HE DIED, CHILEE POWDAH, MILKMAN. IF HE WOULD OF KEPT ALL THEM WITH ALL THIS RAWNESS HE HAD BACK THOSE DAYS, HE PROBABLY WOULD OF BEEN THE NEXT N.W.A. ON THE WEST COAST. BUT HE MADE HIMSELF FALL OFF WITH THE MISTAKES HE MADE AND I DEFINITELY AGREE WITH THE OTHER PERSON WHO SAID HE SHOULDA JUST RETIRED FROM MAKING ALBUMS AT "MP DA LAST DON" BECAUSE THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE HIS LAST AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN. OH WELL, CAN'T CHANGE TIMES BUT TOO BAD MASTER P LET THE TIMES CHANGE HIM.

5 out of 5 stars REAL NO LIMIT.......2005-06-16

Now days there isn't such a thing as 'no limit', its a wack watered down thats been fu@ked up version since around 96 or 97 thats gone way past its limits and just fails i think. This was a tight album and the lyrics are haaaard. I like ea-ski's flow and his 92 album which you should check out too. but everyone else on here is good too. Master P gets enough respect from me, I like the way he went out there and funded his equipment and made sure he done whatever he could to make it. And when he started getting money from records too he started putting it in with his other money(!?!) and straight invested in no limit and equipment. He really knew how to hustle and has brains. But anyway, I like his beats too, he has a lot of flavour and makes nice melodies or uses the best samples if needing samples and just makes some tight tight beats. The lyrics are real and a lot of people can relate to this, it's no party anthem or 'here come the boys' hooty hoo s#it. Strictly for real raw heads. Anyway, If you smart, you probably got this already and rate it good. Unless you are some rich a@s Fa@@ot or someone who lives in a fairy tale place where nothing goes on except for mail not coming on time you will probably criticise what you don't understand. But if you don't have it, pick it up cos it's going to be impossible to find soon and you will miss what this label was all about when they kept it REAL! Peace!

1 out of 5 stars A Miscalculated Obeisance to Friml.......2003-11-06

A "Tru" understanding of consequentialist rodomontade necessitates nonparticipation in this sort of epicene satrapy. "Tru" (who was born Barney Poofter and hails from Prince William Sound) attempts a totally unironic, ersatz Wienerschnitzel gemuetlicheit in this, his sophomore effort. He fails miserably to connect with his intended audience. Those days of wine and roses are gone, my friend, to return no more. Get with the program, Mr. Clueless: Rap is where it's at--and the more "G" it is, the better! Hardcore, no limit, raw and uncut...that's what the young kids want. But Mr. Tru-ly Clueless persists in trying to tempt his homeys with visions of lilac-scented damsels and tedious disquisitions on the minutiae of ballroom etiquette. Talk about being out of touch! When will this silly person wake up and realize it's all about bobbysox and smoky saxophones and accenting the upbeat and mastering that cool hepcat lingo?

If you guys want the real deal, I suggest you check out Dick Hyman's new CD. It's totally AWESOME!!!

What more could you ask for? Miami Bass, Girls, Cisco, and news with Luke.
Here's a fun fact: George Lucas actually sued him for using the name "Skyywalker" (not even spelled the same way), and unfortunately won the case, but it doesn't stop Luke at what he does best... make the girls go Doo-Doo Brown!!!

3 out of 5 stars Good album but cmon Paid in full..........2006-01-01

I liked the album. In fact I bought this thinking it was the same stuff that was supposed to come out in 2002 after "GYMC". Little did I know that it was lego'd by Mista madd and cat themselves. They are still trying to make money off of artists that aren't even on their label anymore. I mean cmon gimme a break. All that aside, I like the cuts that Chamill did, or the cuts they pieced off him. How ever "fake" this album may be, it still had alot of fire from Chamill's verses.

1 out of 5 stars Paid N Partial is Pasting in Partial.......2005-11-30

1 word, BOOTLEG. yea no doubt it is 100% koopa and paul wall but koopa didn't get paid for this album paid in partial still had songs that were koopa's before he left and put em out and pasted em on beats as a last attempt to make money of the messiah. So if u wanna hear somethin from Koopa go head n bootleg this cd, don't give phonies like paid in partial records money.

1 out of 5 stars Please Dont Press Purchase.......2005-11-06

Listen..... You hear it?????? Thats the sound of a horrible record.. Dont get me wrong Koopa is the King but this album which I will admitt to bootlegging cause it doesent deserve a half a penny... Folks this album is worse than Milli Vanillis greatest hits.. Its thrown together with half verses from Chamillionaire and half verses from Paul Wall.. The only good songs are jacked... You can purchase these good songs in the "REAL" by getting Chamillitary and Mixtape Messiah... Mad Hatta and Big Cat are lames and I cant believe they realesed this phoney album... Paid in Partial records is all garbage and this album should be removed from this web site immediatly.. Any real Chamillionaire fan should be digusted by this Album which has no respect for The Game... This is as fake as Lil Kims breasts and face... I personally would rather listen to a Elton John album before i Bump This Garbage....... Dyke Jones Phoney

5 out of 5 stars WTF?.......2005-10-11

Don't listen to the other reviews, fresh from one of the swisha house veterans and southern masters comes Controversy Sells. THIS IS NOT 50 CENT AND FRED DURST, THIS IS DJ PAUL WALL & CHAMILLIONAIRE SORT UR FACT OUTS!... With songs like "True" and "Still" this just shows the masters at their best, no-one has changed their voice, no-one has changed their name, this is 100% Chamillionaire/King Koopa & DJ Paul Wall.

2 out of 5 stars Pasted vocals under different beats.......2005-07-26

This is not a very well put together cd. Chamillionaire left Paid in Fool records before completing this album. So the DJ's and CEO of PNF pasted all of Chamillionaires lyrics from "Mixtape Messiah" on some of their beats to complete the album. This record doesn't have the same mesh from Paul Wall and Chamillionaire you heard on "Get Ya Mind Correct." I got this cd thinking it was Chamillionaire's first solo album he had been promoting, but it was a cd PNF dropped using Chamillionaire's title. His first album has been switched to the title "The Sound of Revenge." PNF was dissing Chamillionaire on a couple of tracks, I found this odd considering they were droppin his album; but Chamillionaire cleared up everything on the cd entitled "Chamillitary." This cd was defintately an upset, the whole logic behind the cd is rediculous. Although there are a 2 good origional tracks, "Respect my Grind" and "True," I wouldn't recommend this cd if you heard "The Mixtape Messiah" album.

5 out of 5 stars Ummm.......2003-10-12

This album was one that lifted my lyrical contents up a notch. Song's like "Success", "Let it Rain", "U Can't Tell". Briliant, Realistic, Encouraging, Spiritual and Raw.

I foremost, would like to give shout outs to one of the producer on their i was feeling the most. Slicse Tee, who wasn't mention but would definitely be recognized as a wizard behind the productions.......... too.

Jazze Pha came through too. With 2 hit songs that were recognized deeply within the streets. "Tired of Ballin" (which we all are sometimes) and "Sho Nuff"

T-Mix likewise "Strange". Which is the title of a song that was knocking my 15's out the box. I had to reposter and reconnect wise everyday. U !elohssa. One

Shadik, I'm outya hair.

Cop this !

5 out of 5 stars Tela's first album!.......2003-07-14

"Piece of Mind" is Tela's debut album and it was recorded while he was on Suave House (later he moved to Rap-A-Lot Records). And like all the albums by this label, it's a classic. The production is on a whole new level, beats that you'll hear nowhere else (Handled by Jazze Pha and Mo-A-Suave productions). They have an R&B feel to them, but don't get the wrong impression - it's down-south rap at the highest level. And so is Tela's rapping. His style is different, he's gota very smooth voice and his flow is unstopable. On some songs he's laid back and on others his rapper has a hard edge. Lyrically he'also much better than most rappers in the game. In fact, he reminds in so many ways of his label-mates, the Memphis rap pioneers Eightball & MJG. Yet he remains special in his own way. On the album you get impressive guest appearences by all Suave House artists - Crime Boss, Mr. Mike, O.C., Eightball, MJG (on one of the albums many highlights "Sho Nuff") and all the rest of them. It's an album you can play from the beginning to the end without skipping even one track. On this remastered edition you get two bonus songs, but you can only play the second one ("Riders" which is one of the best). The first one is recorded in a very poor quality, you can barely hear it (and it's a just a different version of track # 3 Tired of Ballin'). Bottom line - one of the best albums to come out from the South. It's one of those albums that just make you feel good, it really relaxes you. It's some playa... with a gangsta twist. Don't sleep on Tela, he always comes out with much heat!
