The world of show business is not a place where shrinking violets bloom. On the contrary, it is known for bombast, opportunism, and egos larger and more gaseous than zeppelins.

Consequently it is rare indeed to find an act featuring two prodigious talents who have chosen to share billing equally. This extraordinary gesture of selflessness is indicated by the word - AND - which links the two names.

A small handful of examples comes to mind where two geniuses are paired. The Captain And Tennille, of course, The Fluorescent Leech And Eddie, and the late lamented duo, Wayland Flowers And Madame who, tragically, died simultaneously.

Add to this distinguished list the names, Sam And Dave. These powerhouse singers, who secured their place in history with a few hits covered by shabby second-stringers, simply define everything that is good about R&B. In fact, if you were beginning an R&B collection, this outstanding CD would be an excellent place to start.

You'll find barnburners like Soul Man and I Thank You, among many others, but you may be surprised how these guys work a ballad. The Best Of Sam AND Dave delivers the goods; and so much more.

I have this one too - BEST OF SAM & DAVE, and although a couple other reviewers stated that there was hissing on the SOOTHE ME track, my copy does not have hissing or any other sound distortion. On the whole, this collection is a pretty good sampler of their rollin' best.

I got what I ordered. The plastic case was broken. The CD Now preferred buyers club claims to have a link to report this type of claim. The link is a dead end. Service rates a single star. Another disc in the same order also had a broken case. The club should back up their products.

I purchased this for the more popular hits, like "Cupid." All in all a good CD, some of the other songs are a little too dated.

Gone But Not Forgotten.......2007-02-20

Sam Cooke should be considered like Nat King Cole and Johnny Mathis as an expert of soul and pop. With an occasional format on oldies' stations, Sam Cooke's legacy deserves a revival for uninitiated audiences. Remarkably, the production of his songs is clear and smooth, fitting for his voice. The instrumentation and backing vocals did the soul singer proud. He could do pop crooner songs with prefection on "Only Sixteen," "What a Wonderful World," and "Cupid". But his festive party numbers could still bring the kids onto the dancefloor, including "Everybody Loves to Cha Cha Cha," and "Twistin' the Night Away,". To further his repertoire, "Bring It on Home to Me" showcases a rockabilly start and a soulful piano for a substantive hidden nugget waiting to be rediscovered. The engaging lyrics are quick to please, but "Chain Gang" increases the scope to social commentary. The three bonus tracks sound like they belonged there in the first place, rather than tiresome encores. Only one complaint is deserved, with the quality and quantity of great Sam Cooke songs, they don't include "Another Saturday Night," one of his greatest songs. I can only conjecture that there were some copyright disputes, but this omission doesn't stop the album from its high stature.

when I was a Kid this was my first introduction to Sam Cooke.His Vocals&Writing are timeless.His Voice covered a wide range of styles&Continues to Influence Generations upon Generations of Artists.His Tone alone was so clear&Clean.He was a Singer's Singer.He is a Mount Rushmore Artist.truly One of a Kind.

Bonus Tracks Still Leave Artist Shortchanged.......2005-09-23

For more than two decades, the original 12-track release of 1962's THE BEST OF SAM COOKE (see my review) was the most complete collection of his hits. In 1986, it was replaced by the double-LP THE MAN AND HIS MUSIC (now out of print). In 2003, ABKCO released the definitive 30-track PORTRAIT OF A LEGEND (see my review).

Now, two years later, RCA upgrades THE BEST OF by adding three bonus tracks: "Win Your Love For Me" (No. 22, 1958), "You Were Made for Me" (No. 27, 1958) and "Nothing Can Change This Love" (No. 12, 1962). Unfortunately, this collection still ends with 1962 which means it is still missing major hits like "Another Saturday Night," "Shake" and the posthumously released classic "A Change Is Gonna Come."

The bottom line is this: Sam Cooke is the most influential soul singer of the past half century, and any serious music collection must include at least one Sam Cook album. But the album to get is PORTRAIT OF A LEGEND. Why? It includes all 15 tracks from THE BEST OF, plus 15 more (including the three mentioned above). The three-star rating isn't for the music (that's five-star!), it's for shortchanging such an influential artist.

Beyond the Blues Brothers.......2007-05-12

If you loved "Hold on, I'm Commin'" in the movie "The Blues Brothers" but know little else about Sam & Dave, buy this CD. The quality of the sound is great and the selection even better. The energy of the singers is contagious and the arrangements on the album are superb. As one of their songs has it, "Wrap it up, I'll take it!"

Wow! This is an amazing cd!.......2006-03-17

I was not really into Sam & Dave before I bought this cd. I must say it is excellent. Their interaction with each other is amazing. They really define the 'gospel' based side of RnB which is called, of course, Soul Music. The intense vocal theatrics they exude are truly astonishing. And even better this cd has all of the original singles not the ones that were re-sung by the duo, which still sounded good but were no where near as intense and raw as the originals. The remastering is excellent, job very, very well done. After I heard the 'real' version of "Hold On! I'm Comin'" I was hooked. But the energy and excitement dont end there, they also were exceptional at heavy ballads. Two of the three ballads here are heavy and they really dig into them. It's almost too much to listen to them because the emotion they put forth is earthshattering. It is also very fun to listen to. While listening close to some of the lyrics on some of the songs I laughed a little at what they were talking about,case in point "I take what I want." This is very, very enjoyable and it has made me a Sam & Dave fan for life. I now plan on getting all of their studio albums with Stax. Enjoy!!!

Southern fried soul! SIZZLIN'.......2005-06-14

there was some footage and stuff about these two guys on Soul Deep, the program that followed the evoloution of soul music.
One show was on the Southern Soul sensation and Staxx records.
Basically, Sam and Dave were components, along with Otis, Wilson Pickett and others, that put the raw, unpolished, and dirty sound of Memphis on the map. The band to give em all the rough and sharp edge was Booker T and the MG's. Steve Cropper has become something of a Legend to me over the last few informative years. His guitar can be heard on all of the aforementioned, and characterizes the sound with that chink style and raw licks he manipulated to a new level.

That sound was the perfect tool for Sam and Dave, who were having trouble breaking the scene. The ever resourcful Jerry wexler did what he did with Pickett and gave the boys the Staxx treatment. essentially, if you can't move to this, then your paralized! The one-upmanship is eveident in the chemistry the experience. Seeing them perform is another thing entirely!

Nice sound on the remaster, and ALL the grooves are here for the licking!

Soul at it's funkiest.

Classic, classic, classic.......2005-03-16

You can't consider yourself afficionato of 60s soul music if you do not have Sam and Dave in your collection. Unparralleled horn section backing, the stuff that influenced Blood, Sweat and Tears more than they will ever admit, Sam and Dave were the funky, street-wise and rugged soul music that Motown was too perfectly coiffed and dressed up to do.

Summer's near and what better time to celebrate the funk of Sam and Dave, than by purchasing this great collection of music and blaring it on your car stereo with the windows rolled down, so you can expose it to anybody you happen to drive by. Get everyone around you dancing and feeling good!!!!!
A definite A+ as far as greatest hits go. Good remastering, great selection of hits and a mini booklet to boot.
If you love horns, then what are you waiting for??!!

Haven't rec'd. this CD yet, but I grew up with this music and have been looking to add it to my collection. Although the music tracks do mimic each other, there are alot of great memories associated with them. I've found that not to many people have ever heard of the Sam, they're missing out!

A dozen tracks from the two-hit wonders, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs.......2005-08-05

The thing about listening to the best of Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs is that you have done that by the time you get to the third track on this Millennium Collection done for the 20th Century Masters series. "Wooly Bully" made it to #2 on the Billboard singles chart in 1965 and the next year "Li'l Red Riding Hood" did the same. Although the group had another seven songs that made it to the charts (six of which are included in this twelve-track collection), none of them made it to the Top 20. "Ju Ju Hand" got to #26 and "Ring Dang Doo" to #33 in 1965, while in 1966 "Red Hot" came in at #82 and "The Hair on My Chinny Chin Chin" made it all the way to #22. In 1967, "Black Sheep" (the missing one) went to #68, "How Do You Catch a Girl" topped out at #27, and "Oh That's Good, No That's Bad" went to #54. I am surprised that when you have such a limited number of songs that can be labeled hits that one would be missing, but there is no reason to believe it is any great loss. The only songs that reek of desperation is "Pharaoh A Go-Go," which is a blatant effort to sound as much like "Wooly Bully" as musically possible, the same way "The Hair on My Chinny Chin Chin" echoes "Li'l Red Riding Hood." Still, for a two-hit wonder, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs certainly stake out their territory and stick to it and if you remember that we are talking the mid-1960s and think of them more as competition for the likes of the Dave Clark Five and the Troggs instead of the Beatles and the Beach Boys you can have a better appreciation of their music.

Sam the Sham was really Domingo Samudio, who got the name because because of doubts about his abilities to be a lead singer in a rock group. Formed in Dallas, the Pharaohs consisted of Ray Stinnet on guitar, David Martin on bass, Butch Gibson playing saxophone, and Jerry Patterson on drums. In terms of music history the group has a small claim to fame in that "Wooly Bully," written about Samudio's cat, introduced Tex-Mex rhythms to popular rock 'n' roll. The problem was that their two big hits defined them as a novelty act (which was certainly reinforced by songs like "I Couldn't Spell !! *@!"), and despite the name that did not set well with Sam the Sham, who broke up the group in 1967 and tried unsuccessfully to find musical legitimacy on his own. In retrospect "Wooly Bully" is one of those rock classics where everything wrong comes out right, and if that is your musical legacy you are ahead of the game. The only concern here is whether you already have those first two tracks, because if you do that decreases the need for picking up this collection. But if you like the fun aspects of rock and roll that emerged in the American response to the British Invasion, not to mention music where the beat drives the songs, then Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs are a Sixties garage band worth listening to again.

I was looking for a Sam the Sham and the Pharaos CD high and low about a year before this CD came out. I finally found one and listened to it all the time. There were about thirty songs and after a while I would just skip through the CD to the good ones. This 20th Century Masters CD has all the good songs without any of the songs that are just okay. Plus it's allot less money.

Makes me SHIVER!.......2000-02-25

What a great collection of tracks. Brings me back to the thrill of seeing Sam Harris on Star Search. So much has happened since then, television series, movies, both of his first CDs going gold, staring on Broadway and being nominated for a Tony. I am honored to say I am still a fan and have grown with him and his constant growth. If you are a fan, get this CD just to remember the thrill of hearing "Over the rainbow" WOW! Back at that time, all we had were weak singers like Paul Young (where is he today and who cares?) so when Sam hit the stage, history was made.

But I can never tire of "Rainbow", that song still makes me shiver. Another song from Star Search I remember was "Going down to your river" and he actually just recorded it for his latest CD "Revival" which blows Labelle right out of the water.

Yeah, I know. Billboard says "Wooly Bully" was the #1 song of 1965. And dear Mom sent me a few records (45s) including "Little Red Riding Hood" (thanks Mom) when I was a GI in Germany. But although I just liked everything the group did, I got a special feeling from sitting in a gasthaus swilling good German beer (chilled for us Amerikaners) and often hearing "Big City Lights" on the jukebox. The sound could be better (No master tapes? Recorded off the 45s?) but if I look to another compilation, will I find "Big City Lights"? Won't risk it. As for "Sam", he had a bad jones for narcotics and when he beat the habit became a Memphis street preacher to thank God for saving him and resisted all efforts to be lured back into the business at which he, perhaps only half-jokingly, called himself a "sham".

Non-Brit. Rock'n'roll Mayhem!.......2004-07-12

Yikes!I know AM radio can make a great song sound weak by playing the s#@t out of a hit record but, Little Red Riding Hood is really a great rock'n'roll tune! I'd go as far as to say Litte Red Riding Hood is even kind of cool in a sinister way. Sam the Sham and his turban-wearing rockers rampaged all over the charts with hits like Wooly Bully and Little Red Riding Hood while the British invasion was in full swing. This is fun, crazy and pure american rock'n'roll in the garage rock and frat tradition. Gee, these guys even drove around in a hearse! How cool is that?

A wrap-up of Sam Phillips's decade-long stint with Virgin Records that began in 1988 with the sublime Indescribable Wow, Zero Zero Zero offers marvels aplenty for anyone unfamiliar with the California singer/songwriter's sterling work. Moreover, there are enough nifty extras tossed in to make it a worthwhile purchase for widely scattered Phillips fanatics. Phillips and producer T-Bone Burnett (Phillips's husband) teamed on all the Virgin releases, lovingly sculpting magical variations on Magical Mystery Tour-style psychedelia. Phillips's helium-high vocals and intriguingly cryptic lyrics, however, are the essential elements in these dizzying pop concoctions. Zero distills new songs, remixes, alternate takes, and album favorites into an intoxicating label sign-off. In the end, one can't help pondering, What next? --Steven Stolder

I really am new to Sam Phillips; for me a good intro.......2005-01-25

The only other Sam Phillips album I've heard previous was "A Boot & A Shoe". I bought "Zero Zero Zero" to get an idea of whether I'd like to buy more of the earlier Sam. It has happened so often that I've heard one album by an artist, only to buy more and find that I'd somehow picked the one anomolous album. (For instance Jules Shear--"Between Us" is altogether different from anything else he's done--I loved it, and read reviews from fans of his other work who hated it--something for everyone, I guess).

On the strength of "Zero Zero Zero", I will buy more Sam Phillips albums. I liked it well enough to want to hear more, even though it wasn't a cohesive album, like "A Boot and A Shoe" (which was excellent, by the way).

Particularly strong tracks--"I Need Love", "Black Sky", & "You Lost My Mind"

This Could Have Been a Better Collection...........2003-08-12

I bought this CD merely to complete my Sam Phillips collection - even though I already had most of these songs on other CDs of hers. I was initially excited that a 'collection' was made, but then I read the songs listed and felt disappointed. Making a Sam Phillips 'Collection' is an impossible task - how can you pick and choose just a few songs to represent Sam Phillips?!? If anything, they should have released a box set of all her recordings!! While there are good songs on this release, there are many gems missing from what a fan would consider her best collections: like "Go Down", "Standing Still", "I Don't Want to Fall in Love", "I Don't Know How to Say Goodbye to You", "Same Rain", "Baby I Can't Please You", "Same Changes", "Entertain-men", "Help Yourself", I guess I could go on and on. I was surprised to see "Black Sky" on here - which was one of my all-time favorite songs, but didn't think it would be appropriate for a collection disc. The new cuts on here are ok, but nothing spectacular. I still think Virgin Records could have done Sam Phillips more justice by releasing a box set of all her recordings. Now, that would have been a great collection!!

This "Best of" collection doesn't do it's job.
Fans will bemoan essential missing tracks, which, if you are bluntly honest about these sort of things, is unavoidable.
Those wishing to sample this unique artist will be poorly served, as this is nowhere near as ear-grabbing as "Martinis & Bikinis". That record, or the "Indescribable Wow" may be a better jumping-on point.
Nice to hear a few tunes I was not familiar with, but I think the album I'll return to most, of hers. will be "Martinis"

A Singer/Songwriter Ahead of Her Time.......2002-06-04

"Zero Zero Zero" is an extraordinary retrospective by an extremely gifted singer/songwriter who has always been ahead of her time.

Phillips' powerful and pointed lyrics paint a world that is superficial, harsh, and illogical.. In "I Need Love" she sings, "I need love, not some sentimental prison; I need God, not the political church; I need fire to melt the frozen sea inside me..." In "Signposts" she longs for a world where "beauty and the truth I could breathe like air." In "Animals on Wheels", a song that pretty much sums up much of human history, she cries, " The famous...don't have to be talented or do good work or be smart....."

It's NOT bitter irony, then, that fame has eluded this multi-talented musician!

Clever by more than a half.......2001-03-27

There's something here indescribable, which is just about right, since SP's first release was The Indescribable Wow. Sam Phillips is part savant, part naif, and part waif - seductive by thirds. Zero, Zero, Zero is a compilation of songs mostly from other releases. A good bit is from Martinis & Bikinis (1994), her closest brush with stardom. Missing is her John Lennon cover of "Gimme Some Truth", but the gorgeous "Flame (Remix)" insinuates itself into your soul with the subtle insistence of its inspiration, Beatles production values from the Rubber Soul period. T Bone Burnett is the producer and his licks come from various places, American folk as much as pop - witness the Brother, Where Art Thou! soundtrack. My favorite here is "Animals on Wheels", a piece SP sampled in her cameo in the Wim Wenders film The End of Violence.

Perhaps you can't relive your past, but for Eric Andersen escape is no option. In these 13 songs--sung in a desolate whisper, played like a seance at Parchman Farm--Andersen, who Bob Dylan has called "a great ballad writer," pursues his darkest memories with one ear cocked to the Delta, the other listening for "the wisdom of Job ... old as the devil." Andersen recorded half of the album in New York and half in Mississippi: Artie Traum picks sparkling lines and Lucy Kaplansky adds sweet harmonies on the acoustic New York material, while a small combo of blues musicians--including legendary drummer Sam Carr and slide guitarist Kenny Brown--add a haunting and muscular electric groove on the Delta cuts. There are also notable writing collaborations with Lou Reed, who cowrites and sings on the title track, and four songs penned with Townes Van Zandt--brooding meditations on mortality imaged in snakelike roads and meadowlark laments. Not As Focused as He Usually Is.......2003-02-02

Eric Andersen is a great writer with a terrific baritone voice that infuses a sense of haunting melancholy into his songs. It is a great, great instrument in the service of his folk or Norwegian heritage material, but somehow isn't quite the ticket for the blues based in Northern Mississippi. The several tracks here recorded with Sam Carr, Super Chickan and Kenny Brown, all colleagues of R. L. Burnside, just down come across as anything other than noble efforts. The songs themselves don't really fit Burnside's posse anyway, but it somehow seems that once you take this music off the porch and put it in a studio, the sanitization takes something away. Andersen is a good bit more erudite than Burnside, and that actually doesn't help. Burnisde and the Northern Mississippi heritage are ever and always about that feral moan, at times deeply painful at times sexually playful. The collaboration with Townes Van Sandt is the best of these tunes. The other "blues" numbers are respectful but not convincing. This is blues music for people who go to folk festivals and think somehow they're gettin down. I guess....

Which brings us back to the other tunes, all of which are terrific songs, with the possible exception of the title track, aided and abetted by Lou Reed, and that's not a good thing either. Lou is fine in Lou's world. Out of that, he tends to leaden the proceedings, and he's no harmonist. Elsewhere Lucy Kaplansky is just amazing, and that seems to underscore how overlooked she is. Her efforts with Eric's songs are absolutely what is required. The standout track here is "Meadowlark", a nostalgic recollection of the road north to Canada. Everything about this piece is filled with Eric's remarkable craft, and the longing for one's home is especially poignantly delivered.
So, this is a disc that somewhat suffers from trying to be too many things. At the time of its release, Burnside was in ascendancy on the music radar, but it's one thing to respect that world, and sometimes you should leave it at that.

Passionate blues CD.......2001-02-28

This artist was previously relatively unknown to me; at about the same time as I bought this CD I realized the importance of the blues to the music of the Woodstock Era. There are an abundance of riches here, one of the least noticed of which may be the backing female vocal. The CD is evenly divided into blues and other songs; the two best blues songs, "Night Train" and "Gonna Go Crazy" are also funny while a third, "The Blue March," tries to be a major work about New Orleans and falls a little short in my opinion. But there is much more. There are the two opening songs, each of which is a song of considerable merit. There are two minor-keyed ballads, "Meadowlark" and "The Road"; there are three other songs of considerable passion: "Dear Mama", "Cold Country" "Magdalena" and also several other blues songs.

This was my first dive into the Eric Anderson catalog. Boy, what a find. This guy is really good. He is helped along on one track by Lou Reed. He is a good singer with some decent musicianship. This is a strong album and I'm looking forward to purchasing more CD's by Anderson.

Best Album I Have Heard This Year........2000-06-02

I'm going to go out on a limb, and say this may be the best work Eric Andersen has ever done. Beautifully written, hauntingly performed with some of his best singing ever. The folk-oriented songs are some of the strongest & most mature he's written, while the blues songs are a bold experiment (and how many artists with a 35-year-career behind them are still experimenting?) that pay off beautifully. More people deserve to know about this one...any fan of Eric Andersen, Townes Van Zandt, Dylan, or any kind of folk/blues music will love this. Buy it...you won't regret it.

Another delightful masterpiece.......2000-03-21

Eric Andersen has struck gold with You Can't Relive the Past. I love the variety of song styles, and my favorite song is "Eyes of the Immigrant", both for its theme and its gorgeous lyrics and melody. Its opening reminds me of "Moonchild River Song" from years back. Every Eric Andersen fan should buy this CD immediately-it's great!
