Sade has always been one of my favorite singers. The live elements of this CD held Sade exude with her most emotive qualities.

Could have been better.......2006-08-19

I purchased the DVD of this concert 2-yrs,. before I purchased the CD and was hoping to have the FULL concert on the CD. The CD represents only 50% of the concert that was on the DVD. Many great concert monments and songs were left off the CD. The band "jam" during Smooth Operator is one example. For those of us who appreciate the musicians talent, writing and production were left short.

In addition, I thought the crowd noise was to high for a live production.

The above reasons were the only reason not to give "5-stars". I only wish it would have been a double CD with the whole concert.

For those who have the resources and a good quality home DVD set-up I would highly recommend the DVD of this concert. One of the best in my collection.

Sade on another dimension.......2006-08-07

Definitely get this CD. Unlike her other CDs this one makes listening to Sade tons better. The live feeling gives you goose bumps. It approximates the live concert electricity as opposed to studio-produced music that's too perfect.

Sultry, Hot, & Cookin'! Sade Rocks! Sade Rules! .......2006-03-16

Superb. I usually avoid live albums, but after hearing 'Somebody Already Broke My Heart' on the car satellite radio, I knew I had to order this album right away. Sade's dreamy voice floating over solid jazz backups and the group's synergy with the audience create a completely electrifying listening experience. Extended, updated versions of 'No Ordinary Love' and 'Is It A Crime' plus the haunting 'Cherish The Day' make this comeback album a total winner. You're going to want to own the concert DVD as well, which contains additional tracks, plus the vision of Sade herself dancing to 'Paradise.' CD or DVD, both experiences are worth owning and sharing with friends. Oh, and yes: listen for the thunderstorm just before the band launches into 'Sweetest Taboo' --- like the music, a 'quiet storm.'

Jonathan's Best.......2006-09-12

This is easily my favorite Jonathan Richman album. Although he has several strong records, his gifts have always shown better live than in the studio. These recordings were made when he was at his early, brilliant peak.

As mentioned by some other reviewers, the song A Plea for Tenderness alone makes this disc an absolute must-have for any fan. There is nothing like it in the world. I don't even think Jonathan ever made anything similar. I'm grateful that this song exists.

Some people have said that this album might not be the place to start for new fans. I disagree. In my experience, people either love Jonathan or they hate him. I doubt it would make much difference what album they start with. The reaction usually happens quite quickly, and as far as I know, few people ever change their minds about it. But you don't even have to listen to the Amazon sound clips to decide. If you believe in the possibility of love and tenderness, and want to make the world a better, saner, more human place, you are in Jonathan's camp.

So I recommend you put this CD into your shopping cart, and proceed to checkout.

The absolute BEST you could get!.......2003-11-23

There is very little of the original Modern Lovers caught on tape out there, at least legally (I'm sure there are plenty of bootlegs floating around). Jonathan Richman and his great band are caught live at two venues, one at Harvard in 1971 and another in Berkeley in 1973, with the inclusion of a great song (Plea for Tenderness) from a Boston gig sometime in 1972(?). The record itself is absolutely essential if you are a Jonathan Richman fan or just looking for something different from the manufactured pop of today's "hit parade". Richman and company don't disappoint, and the record is a unique mixture of the original Lovers' sound.

First formed in the late Sixties when Jonathan Richman became infatuated with the Velvet Underground and started his own band, blending the influence of that band with his earlier love for Fifties-era rock. The result, The Modern Lovers, were together in their original format until 1974, and by the time their one album (really a collection of individual sessions which form a cohesive album) was released in 1976, the band backing Jonathan Richman had changed. Jonathan moved towards softer musical styles, and while this would provide some great music, the original band's sound was lost.

That's what makes this recording so great: here is the "rockin'" Modern Lovers captured in their primal heat, bringing down the house to a bemused audience who doesn't quite know what to make of them. One of the charms of the live shows is the way Jonathan and the band switch from heavy, fast songs like "Someone I Care About" to slower, low-key numbers like "Hospital" or "Girlfriend". The sound captured on this is pure fun and enjoyment, tempered with Jonathan's own hearbreak-fueled songs about girls who hang around in the Cezanne wing of the modern museums.

This is a gem of a record, worth seeking out if you wonder what all the fuss was about. If you have no idea who Jonathan Richman is, this will be a perfect intro. All in all, this along with the original album are perfect compliments to each other, and both illuminate how punk evolved. Get this first, then the album. You can't go wrong...

Revealing as an artist's sketchbook..........2003-04-29

If you already appreciate the unique genius represented by the original Modern Lover's Beserkly release then you will likely find this live collection very interesting and moving... but if you are new to the world of JoJo in general, or the Modern Lovers thang in specific, then this piece would not serve as a good entry point.

For one thing, the sound quality is "bootleg"... also, the song selection / running order leans heavily on slow, meandering sad stuff instead of the more upbeat, cutting/rock-edged stuff. This may turn off first-time or casual listeners... but there are definitely some very magic moments for those with patience and determination... you get some "unheard/unrecorded" songs including the phenomenal "the Mixer" which is easily on par with classics like "Roadrunner" and "She Cracked". Also, alternate lyrics for Roadrunner are interesting and the extended "patter" in-between songs really gives you some intense insight into where Jonathan Richman's head was at during this period.

The stand-out cut for me on this album though was the monumental version of "I'm Straight". During the spoken intro the pain and scars are so fresh that Jonathon sounds like he is seriously about to break into tears... the band unsteadily slids in behind him and things slowly build in intensity until we get to a point by the end of the song where all the microphones and recording gear overload heavily into the red-line as the whole band shrieks the refrain "I'M STRAIGHT!!" at the top of their lungs. I can't think of anything else in the history of recorded music that compares with the emotional intensity of this track... well worth the price of admission alone!

Three Chord Salvation Hoedown..........2002-11-10

My Modern Lover's collection will often sit untouched for months on end but when I dig them back out they don't leave my CD player for weeks.

This album captures everything the Modern Lover's stood for. The essential piece on this disc is "A Plea for Tenderness". Call me a bizzare case but that song that may sound like a bunch of unstructured noise to anybody else brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it.When Jonathan begins pleading, he sounds like he's really breaking down from desperation.

Jonathan's constant pleas of "play softer" and the bands obvious desire to not comply with his wishes give you a look into the reasons this truly unique band dissolved but it also makes for highly entertaining listening.

In my view this is hands down the best live recording of any rock band ever, mainly because it's not about perfection. it's about sincerity and the freedom music can give you to be your own person.

Essential stuff.......2001-12-05

If you believe, as I do, that the first Modern Lovers album was Jonathan Richman's creative watershed, this is an essential purchase. You can really hear how close their live sound was to the John Cale-produced "demos" that constituted their Beserkley debut. What makes this indispensible, however, is the inclusion of a handful of original songs that were never recorded, as well as Jonathan's inimitable stage patter. Added bonus: The great John Felice, the original 15-year-old Modern Lovers guitarist, is on several tracks. (Who's John Felice, you ask? Check out the 1977 debut album of his boss band the Real Kids, which is available thru Amazon.com. You won't regret it.)

Sade fans may experience a range of emotions while watching the first-rate Lovers Live, but one thing they won't feel is shortchanged--not with nearly two hours of concert footage, 22 songs (including almost all of her Lovers Rock album), and DVD bonus features galore. That sultry, soulful Sade sound is in full effect throughout the concert (filmed at two Southern California locations in 2001), brought to life by a capable band, some superbly evocative visuals and sound effects, and, of course, the singer herself. The show is dramatic, but never overly theatrical; best of all, Sade, while perhaps not the world's greatest performer, is an adult--you'll find no pop-princess posing here. Of the nine songs from Lovers Rock, "Slave Song" and "Immigrant" are especially moving, revealing that Sade added some new flavors to her sound during her protracted layoff from performing. Sade's brand of elegant pop/R&B owned the charts in the '80s, making the Nigerian/British chanteuse one of those artists whose very name becomes the adjective to describe their sound. After an eight-year layoff, Sade and her core band (and longtime producer Mike Pela) are back with a CD that is both a stunning reaffirmation of her artistry and a solid soulful collection. Perhaps the best thing that can be said about Lovers Rock is that it picks up where Sade left off, which means you will hear no cool beats or hot hired hands or hip-hop cameos. This is Sade music, and on the first single, "By Your Side," she glides back into the spotlight on gentle, countryish, sparse wings--singing, once again, about love's power to redeem. Of course, Sade knows that love can stink: listen to the dub-riddim-tinged "Every Word" and cry tears of recognition. Decidedly female but utterly universal, grown up yet not hardened, Lovers Rock ranks as one of the best of the year, and marks the return of a true original. --Amy Linden

Good deal sometimes.......2006-04-12

These discs are sold in many different ways. You can buy them separately. You can buy as they are sold here, as a CD with a bonus DVD in a standard CD jewel case. Or you can buy it as a DVD with a bonus CD in a standard DVD box. The prices on all keep changing. So, you should check all the options to see which is the best value. Lovers Live is also available on audio CD but does not include all of the songs.

THE DVD RATES ABOUT 4 STARS AND THE CD ABOUT 2 STARS.

This is one of the best filmed and edited concert DVDs to come out in the last few years. Most concert DVDs are filmed with inadequate lighting and with bad camera angles. The editing can be especially bad, with the scenes constantly flipping, the cameras always zooming in and out, and the wrong person being shown at the wrong time.

The filming and lighting of this DVD is extremely good. The camera angles and close ups are great. The editing is fairly good, but not as good as some classics, like Stop Making Sense. For the most part, the scene focuses on the correct musician at the correct time. The shots are held for more than 2 seconds. There still is a little too much flipping around in some parts, like during the encore. The shot never holds long enough for you to get a clear picture of the new outfit and hairdo Sade has just changed into.

The extras on this DVD are not very significant. There are shots of Sade and the band walking from backstage up to the stage. And then there is a section of inane interviews of fans.

This is the concert tour to support Sade's Lovers Rock CD. So, there are many songs from that album. Much of the music at this concert is played in the style of Lovers Rock, even most of her old classic songs.

I prefer Sade's original sound to what she is doing today. It is a subtle change, but I don't think the new sound makes the best of her voice and talents.

The sound is a starker, muted sound backed by a rhythm that almost sounds like an electronic drum machine. Her vocals are whispered in popish way. I prefer the old days where she a lusher, but more jazz oriented sound. However, I also like a couple of the new tracks on Lovers Rock that are blues oriented.

For anyone who loves Sade, especially her more recent sound, this is a fantastic concert DVD. You couldn't ask for more.

THIS CD DOES NOT MAKE THE MOST OF SADE'S VOICE OR SONG WRITING.

The CD, originally released in 2000, contains 11 studio recorded tracks. It is 44 minutes long.

This is really a stark, stripped down sound for Sade, especially when you compare it to her early work.

Seven of the tracks are driven by muted electronic rhythms and a muffled background music. I don't think the sound works well with Sade's vocal style. She sings flat and without emotion. All seven of these tracks sound alike and the CD gets boring and monotonous.

The songs that are good are where she drops the electronic rhythms and lets the emotion of her voice come through, or where she livens up and starts to rock.

On The Sweetest Gift and It's Only Love That Gets You Through, Sade sings to almost no accompanyment. Here she sings in a great jazz/blues style and really lets the emotion of her voice come through.

King of Sorrow and Immigrant are a little more upbeat rockers. (they are not really rockers, but do rock when you compare to the other tracks on the CD). Here she sings with more energy and variation.

So, if she is the King of Sorrow, I think I might consider turning gay.

Mesmerizing.......2006-04-10

Tired of the bleached blonde, lip-synching, bimbos that pass for pop-stars these days? Here's the real deal. She belts out almost two hours of incredible original music without a crack. Her band is as slick and professional a group as you will ever see. And who knew Sade could dance? She moves the way she sings, with grace and style. What a woman!

The DVD has become my Friday night decompression from a week of stress. The beautiful sounds and beautiful lady are a hypnotic combination. I like the mix of old and new. "Somebody Already Broke My Heart" is just a fantastic bluesy song and sounds even better live.

I also love the CD. The sound is fine on a quality stereo system. It does break-up a little on my computer speakers and did not rip to the I-pod very well. I believe the problem is the very deep bass - King of Sorrow in particular. Oh well. If you are shopping for a new sub-woofer or tower speakers, this is the CD to bring.

I like the fact that both disks come in a normal CD-sized case, not a bulky DVD booklet.

Stop reading reviews and just buy it - the album itself would cost this much in a retail store.

HAVING OWNED ALL OF SADE'S WORKS, I ENJOYED LIVE DVD PERFORMANCE & WOULD RATE IT 4 1/2 STARS.FLIP SIDE OF THE REVIEW IS THE CD. IT IS POUR QUALITY & WEAK FOR ANYTHING BY THIS ARTIST. the dvd is without flaw but heads up on the cd as the sound reproduction is warped. you're better off buying the dvd and cd separately.

The Lovers Live Sade video is her best ever. Not only is the band and the singer on fire, the video itself is marvelous. Great lighting, great sound, great setting. Entertainment doesn't get any better than this!

When 5 Stars is Not Enough.......2005-10-28

What makes a great live album? A faithful reproduction or superior reinterpretation of a studio classic? Audience rapport? Great guitar solos? Fantastic new songs? All of the above?

Have I got the album for you.

For post-Beserkley Chartbusters Jonathan fans, this is THE album to have. It kicks off with I'm a Little Airplane, which is available nowhere else. Until the applause kicks in at the end of the song, it is as tight as Jonathan's best studio recordings from the era. It's goofy lyrics (yes, he really is a little airplane), joined with fun riffs and a guitar solo so good that Jonathan requested a second one, result in a thoroughly enjoyable two minutes. The song immediately segues into audience banter where a heckler accuses Jonathan of wearing the same shirt for two consecutive nights. Of course, Jonathan objects! Fortunately, he is not thrown off form and counts into a version of "Hey There Little Insect" that is superior in every way to the studio version. If you don't know the song, it's everything its title promises. From there, the band moves on to their biggest hit, the instrumental "Egyptian Reggae." Doesn't this album sound fun already?

And I haven't even gotten to the marathon rendition of "Ice Cream Man" that closes side one of the old album. This is a far superior version to the studio recording that brings out all of the song's promise of waiting for the ice cream man on a hot summer's day when you were six years old. The fake endings of the song as the audience begs for more is the high point of the album and guaranteed to bring a dumb smile to your face.

Side two has a hard time living up to side one, but that's like saying side one of Abbey Road doesn't hold up to side two. Not much to complain about here. A guided tour to the land of dinosaurs, New England, South America, and Kookenhakens is more than most of us deserve. The final song, "The Morning of Our Lives," is so sweet-natured and kind; do the cynic inside of you a favor and give this song a listen. It will make you wish you never grew up.

All in all, this is my favorite live album by any artist. Jonathan's hero, Lou Reed, did well with "Rock 'n Roll Animal," but this is better.

Modern Lovers still alive!.......2005-09-09

It must have been more than 25 years ago I listened to this album for the first time. It's one of these you must have in your collection. Songs like "I'm a little airplane" and "Icecream man" still lingered in my mind and over the years I trapped myself regularly I was humming or singing these songs when I was in a good mood. Now I can make every mood good! I put on this CD and the sun is shining again!

One more time ice cream man!.......2004-06-18

After "Rock & Roll With...", this is my favorite post Jerry Harrison Modern Lovers album (just ahead of "M.L.s 88"). A few weeks before this new Castle edition was released the Amazon listing for it mentioned something like 33 bonus tracks that were to be included on a two disc set. Apparantly they couldn't clear that extra material in time (hopefully bootlegs will start appearing now of those shows). What is here is the same great album you probably already have, but with rare photos & newsclippings that are actually rare as well as remastering. The best live albums for me are the ones with great new songs to make them worth buying. The four new songs are classics. "I'm a Little Dinosaur", "My Little Kookenhaken" & "I'm a Little Airplane" (which has been featured on "Sesame Street") are his best kiddie songs & "Morning of Our Lives" his best anthem about optimism & self esteem. "Hey There Little Insect" is the only old one they improve on, but the rest are just as infectious as the originals. Jonathan's good natured confrontations with the audience are priceless & even the umpteenth false stop of "Ice Cream Man" has a certain charm. Anyway, it depends how important artwork & remastering are to you. & if you could never find this cd before (or want to pay the collectible price), here it is for you to discover (excavate?).

Music score was great. Paul McCartney and Wings. Movie well fitted for Roger Moore, a great candidate for this role.
The Solitaire melody is dreamy and romantic and often moody.
"Bond Goes to New York' is sharp yet out-witted. "Live and Let Die", a sacrament to testimony. Too good to pass up.

I have only been waiting for this for 22 years! Granted when this was first released on LP (Vinyl record technology, pre cd, pre cassette and during the horror period of 8 track tapes!),
Only so much music could be recorded on a record. This album finally satisfies all of us who wanted all of the music. Sir George Martin does a wonderful variation to the classic 007 theme as well as great action sequences with different variations of the main title and then some original songs. Sir Martin was the first to score for Bond since Barry who had scored all of the previous movies unavailable for this one. The music was a fabulous introduction to the new Bond Roger Moore.
This Album will stand the test of time when good music was being made for the series.

The remastered release of LIVE AND LET DIE is much improved. The previous issue was no different than the track line up on the original 1973 vinyl record -- or eight track tape, depending on your antiquated stereo. Not only does this release include additional superb tracks, some of the original cuts have also been lengthened and more closely correspond the the film soundtrack. George Martin, the Beatles producer, took the helm from John Barry in scoring the eighth James Bond film soundtrack. Though no one has yet equaled Barry's compositions for Bond films, which we have not heard since 1987's THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, Martin's soundtrack was perfect for launching Roger Moore's first outing as Bond. Let us not forget Paul McCartney's brilliant theme of the same name.

The musical chemistry between McCartney and Martin is obvious as the title theme music is blended throughout the soundtrack. As a matter of trivia the movie producers originally planned to use McCartney's title theme with a female vocalist before the former Beatle showed his mettle as a negotiator. In the end, Paul McCartney and Wings performed the title track. LIVE AND LET DIE also proved to be a hit Apple/Capitol single as well.

There are a couple things missing from the CD. When some of the James Bond soundtracks were re-released a couple years ago they included selected soundbytes and an analog movie trailer. Apparently the remastered LIVE AND LET DIE soundtrack did not rate these extra features.

Oh well, Live and Let Die. In the meantime, live and go buy.

Why weren't these tracks included in the first place?.......2003-04-16

Yes, that is my sentiment....in fact, it seems in all the other re-mastered Bond soundtracks, the best music is left out, and Live and Let Die was no exception.

George Martin took over from John Barry to write the score for Live and Let Die and he more than admirably did the job. First of all, (take note David Anrold), is that he incorporate the theme song into the score even though it wasn't written by him...thus continuing the tradition of Bond music set by John Barry. Second, he wrote another piece for Solitaire which is also used extensively throughout the score. In all, George Martin wrote a score worthy of Barry himself....

Which is what makes the original release such a disappointment because many of the best music was left out. The re-master remedied that and includes virtually the entire score: the music for the pre-title sequence (gun barrel/snakebit), other notables are Bond and Rosie, The Lovers, Bond to New York, and many of the cues for action/chase sequences. There is an alternate cue for San Monique which I think is better than the one on the original release.

But why the 3 stars rating?
We have to wait for Bond's 40th anniversary for the soundtrack's proper release, AND rebuy the soundtrack (I have it in cassette and CD and now the Re-master). Call me bitter, I think the people who runs the Bond empire should stop treating us fans so shabbily.

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

The last of the 80's performances.......2007-01-19

This show is the last one by the 1980's incarnation of the band. I really like this show although I do think they played a tad better on this tour. I saw them in Berkeley and LA on this tour and they were great. The first three songs on here all flow in and out of each other very well. Starting with the improv:Entry Of The Crims starting with Bob, Ade and Tony. Bill comes in near the end and Bob starts with the opening to Larks Tongues In Aspic Part 3. This is the 80's lineup at the top of their game, fast tight and intrecate. As this ends, Ade starts banging out the chords to Thela Hun Ginjeet which is played so fast it must have sent at least 300 dancers to the hospital that night. Next up is the instrumental Red. The 80's lineup of this band did such a wonderful job on this song. The pretty Matti Kudasai which is really a wonderful love song and a nice change of pace from what has come before. Next are three songs from the band's then newest Three Of A Perfect Pair. Industry, Dig Me and Three Of A Perfect Pair followed by Indiscipline. The second half starts with the Beat song Sartori In Tangier and then another Discipline song Frame By Frame. The band then returns to the new album with a nice Man With An Open Heart. This is followed by one of Beat's best songs Waiting Man. Followed by the song that was the new single Sleepless. I like what the 80's lineup also does with Larks Tongues In Aspic Part 2. Like in their versions of Red this lineup gives new life to this song. Discipline is nice. The band ends the show with probably this lineup's two most known songs Heartbeat and Elephant Talk. All in all, worth every penny.

Quintessential Crims.......2006-07-09

This has got to be one of the GREATEST archive releases I have ever heard along with the Who's 'Live at the Isle of Wight 1970'. This got me into the 80's incarnation of Crims and almost immediately made Adrian Belew my favorite vocalist for the band (although it is a difficult to say because Lake was probably the best vocalist, Wetton sings on my favorite album, 'Red', and Belew is probably my favorite vocalist).

The track selection here is great. Aside from the opening improv 'Entry of the Crims', all of the songs are amazing. For those of you that like old-school Crims, there's the instrumentals 'Red' and a sped-up 'Larks Tongues in Aspic Part II'. For those that like 80's Crimson atonality, there's 'Indiscipline', 'Dig Me', and the instrumental 'Industry'. For those that like tight instrumentals, there's 'Sartori in Tangier', 'Larks Tongues in Apsic Part III', and 'Discipline'. And for everyone else, there's the groovy 'Thela Hun Ginjeet' and 'Heartbeat', the Genesis-like 'Man With an Open Heart', the classic 'Elephant Talk', the almost frightening 'Sleepless', the slowed down 'Frame by Frame', the cryptic 'Waiting Man' and 'Three of a Perfect Pair'. And of course the beautiful 'Matte Kudasai'.

Well, I believe I just covered the whole album. It's certainly the best Crimson live release I've heard (and I've heard alot, 'The Nightwatch', 'USA', 'B'BOOM', 'Epitaph', 'VROOOM VROOOM', and 'Heavy ConstruKCtion') and the one where the tightest playing is. Buy it today.

Very good; but could have been better.......2005-05-20

I don't think that this CD quite captures the best of the 1984 tour. This was the last show of the tour. It probably would have been better to take highlights from the tour instead of doing a complete show.

This is the early eighties version of King Crimson. It is really a superstar band with Robert Fripp (of course) and Bill Bruford, along with the great Tony Levin and Adrian Belew.

Each disc is around 52 minutes long. The sound quality is very good, with very little audience noise. There is some talking between some of the tracks by Adrian Belew (Belew became the spokesman for the group; in previous versions of the band, it used to be Fripp). At the end of the second disc, there is a couple of minutes of silence, followed by more Belew talking.

The second disc is also "enhanced". It includes some files you can play on your PC. It is basically advertisements for other CD's. It doesn't work very well.

Overall, this is a very nice concert, with energetic performances. Most of it is like the 3 albums King Crimson put out at the time, Beat, Discipline and Three of a Perfect Pair. There is a lot of Belew's personality put into the songs.

Much of the music contains driving rhythms. Levin on bass and Bruford on drums are more like lead players than a background rhythm section. They pull and drive the band.

My memory of seeing them during this tour (in Berekley) was that they were even more energetic, and more of the concert centered around those driving rhythms. The whole audience was up and dancing and weaving back and forth. It was an unusual sight as the audience bopped up and down perfectly to the rhythms. Also, Belew was a wildman and all over the place. You don't quite get that feeling with this CD set. Maybe this particular concert isn't as good, or maybe you just have to be there.

It is interesting to see Bruford continuing his collaboration with Fripp, being burned a couple of times. He left Yes, at the height of Yes's popularity to join King Crimson in the seventies. But, a few years later, Fripp thought the world was going to end and he disbanded the band.

Adrian Belew has an interesting solo career and has played with many different bands. He had a really interesting stint with Frank Zappa.

Tony Levin is currently puttin out some of the best music around. Check out his Upper Extremeties, or his collaboration with Bruford.

Somewhat sloppy at first, the band warms up and are killer.......2004-12-05

The first CD of this final concert by the 80's afrobeat crim starts off a little shaky. There are fudged guitar lines especially during the messy Thela Hun Gingeet and the boys seem a little off. Red and Matte Kudasai are good, but unremarkable. But then comes "Industry", wow. It's worth the price of the cd right there, much darker than the studio version. The Band is warmed up and focused and henceforth Absent Lovers only gets better. "Three of a Perfect Pair" is played with a fire not found on the studio album and Bruford's drumming on "Indicipline" is remarkable. By the time of "Frame By Frame", Crimson are smoking hot, the ensemble playing is other worldly. Fripp plays an amazing solo during Sartori in Tangier, the first song on the second CD. Adrian's guitar solo for "Lark's Tongues in Aspic Part 2" is appropriately insane. The band's interplay on "Discipline" is astounding. "Heartbeat", a song that was never one of my favorites, actually sent chills down my spine. I've never heard a better live version of "Elephant Talk" with Tony's Chapman Stick intro and Fripp's embelishments to the rhythm parts, wow again.

Excepting the first few tunes from CD One, every song sounds better than its studio counterpart. They're more immediate, and the band takes chances. Ultimately the show is a very very good one, the playing and sound quality are excellent. But as another reviewer has said the Simmons electronic drum sound which was so cool at the time (I saw Crim on this and the Discipline tours) has not dated well. Neither has the guitar synth and effects that Robert and Adrian use, oh well. Absent Lovers is a snapshot of the time and I have to judge it as such. Ultimately, complaints aside, Absent Lovers is an excellent album. It shows what the 80's Crimson were capable of on a good night. These guys were/are fantastic musicians who communicated well together on stage like few other bands.

Fascinating Music, But the Liner Notes Are a Drag.......2004-10-23

The legendary mid-70s King Crimson line-up of Robert Fripp, John Wetton, Bill Bruford, and David Cross earned its praise through elaborate, slowly developed ideas which were always brilliant when they finally burst in full glory. Almost to the contrary, the early 80s 'Crimcarnation' of Fripp, Bruford, Tony Levin, and Adrian Belew made its mark with spontaneous, fast and complex music, which when heard in the studio one might suspect that the talent was actually owed to engineering and production tricks. But with "Absent Lovers," here it is live on stage, and it's as real as the talent in the hands of each member.
The 80s line-up's last performance, and last gathering for nearly a decade, this was recorded live in Montreal in 1984, "for posterity, whoever posterity is," as singer Belew puts it in his oddball conversations to the wildly fanatic audience. While "The Nightwatch" was the perfect live document of the mid-70s King Crimson, "Absent Lovers" is the ultimate document of the work done by this version, culled mostly from the three albums they recorded together ("Discipline," "Beat," and "Three Of a Perfect Pair"). The flawless recording and sound quality prove without any doubt that these complex, challenging structures and often speed-of-sound performances were not just studio voodoo, and these four men together created one of the most jaw-dropping Crim sounds yet. The group breezes through the essential material from their three albums together, as well as some favorites from the 70s, 'Larks' Tongues In Aspic Part 2' and the well-structured 'Red,' a wise choice rather than acknowledging the 70s with something standard like 'Easy Money.' The performances of the then-newer material are interesting as well; Belew's spoken word part through 'Indiscipline' is now turned into the screaming of a maniac, and 'Thela Hun Ginjeet' is given a more instrumental approach (which might be disappointing for those who enjoyed the taped voice-over in the original studio version). Other songs like the melancholy 'Waiting Man' and 'Matte Kudasai,' or the more erratic 'Man With An Open Heart' and 'Three of a Perfect Pair' carve in stone the talent it took for a challenging band like King Crimson to muster up some slightly pop senbilities. The instrumentals are, as always, done with brilliancy (notably 'Entrance of the Crims').
"Absent Lovers" does the 80s line-up of King Crimson more justice than any compilation/best-of album could ever do. But most fans who buy this 2-disc set will enjoy only the music, as Robert Fripp's long-winded liner notes yet again describe the business scams of the band's former label E.G., something Fripp has difficulty letting go of, and are full of his boasting about the ethics and practices of the new Discipline label, which the guitarist seems to think are the saints of the music industry.
