Editorial Reviews

From the Artist
"I went on down there, and when Bobby started singin’ and playin’ the guitar, right away, it stood all my hairs up on my arm. He was singin’ R&B like they did in the ’60s, which is the only kind of R&B I know, and you just don’t hear that no more. What they call R&B these days, that ain’t the real thing." - Dan Penn, 2005

"Mr. Purify, along with his gospel and blues qualities, has that touch of the South and that pinch of country that puts him in the great lineage of down-home r&b singers from south of the Mason-Dixon line—the Arthur Alexanders, the Joe Simons, the Percy Sledges, the Clarence Carters—and yes, dare I say it—the Otis Reddings. - Jerry Wexler, 2005

Product Description
Bobby Purify a.k.a. Ben Moore, whose rich, melodious voice enhanced later hits by the duo James & Bobby Purify, has come out of retirement with the help of producer and songwriter Dan Penn and several legendary players of the American Soul era.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best.......2007-05-29

Look, Jerry Wexler and Dan Penn generally know what they're talking about, but this album is boring and lame. "Purify"-- not even the same person who sang "I'm Your Puppet" but an impostor named Ben Moore -- has so much less emotional commitment than the singers Wexler compares him to like James Carr or Otis. Compared to their passion, this guy might as well be sleepwalking through these vocals. He even sings flat at some points on this album. I'm sure he's a great guy and Wex and Penn wanted to help him out, but don't buy this expecting a neo-soul gem like Solomon Burke or Al Green's comeback discs. I think it's "better not to have it".

5 out of 5 stars Soul Music From the Heart and the Gut.......2006-09-25

I won't even attempt to write as eloquently as the first 6 reviewers, I can't do it. But if this recording doesn't move you, then you're probaly dead and don't know it yet; or perhaps you simply have a "hole in your soul." I can't stop playing this CD. If you're looking for the kind of music that will put goose bumps and your flesh, make the hairs on your neck tingle, and bring a tear to your eye, then search no more, this is it. If this CD doesn't get you "where you live," then you haven't lived enough life i.e., haven't known personal affliction, or devastating loss, becoming one with a woman, or rebounding from a bad situation to have the last laugh. In addition, folks who may fancy themselves songwriters can get a master class from the compositions of Dan Penn on this CD. I could go on and on, but this recording is a must for soul music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem of Southern Soul.......2005-09-10

This is Bobby Purify -the name alone already should announce what's possible- returning from oblivion and putting together his first album in many years.
I understand, he's gone through some very hard times which, unfortunately, is not an isolated case. He's not the only great musician who's lack of recognition seems to be inversely proportional to his tremendous talent, yet this album -if it receives the proper attention it deserves- should change all that.
Exquisitely produced by Dan Penn and backed by some of Muscle Shoals greats like Spooner Oldham and Jimmie Johnson, this album is an absolute gem of Southern Soul. When Jerry Wexler, in the liner notes, mentions Purify's name next to Arthur Alexander or Otis Redding, I don't believe he's exagerating.
Bobby Purify, after almost forty years of singing, still has one of the most beautiful Soul voices I've ever heard. His tone, phrasing and capacity to bring out the heart out of every word is stunning, this is a master lesson on how to bare one's deepest feelings without ever losing sight of the song nor indulging in vocal acrobatic. Revealing everything without ever showing off.
It's hard not to mention every song included here, each a gorgeous example of great singing, thoughtful arrangements and dead-on atmosphere, but if pushed to it I've got to say that the ballads are the biggest gift. "Things Happen," "Forever Changed," "Testimony Of A Fool," and "Hate To See You Go" can be enough to justify a singer's career, let alone be found in one album.
The rest of the album does not stay behind and, again, the production and arrangements -the horns, guitar and piano are wonderful throughout- offer Purify the perfect backdrop to let it all come out and touch your heart like the sweetest breeze, or a longed-for blessing.

4 out of 5 stars Title says it all.......2005-08-24

Legendary Atlantic Records man Jerry Wexler's comparison of Bobby Purify to Otis Redding may be stretching it a bit. Redding was a flat out star, which is something that separated him from 99% of other artists. Purify is just a great singer, which also separates him from others, especially those wrongly labeled as Soul artists these days.

This album also can't be compared with Southern Soul albums of the '60s, even though it features players who supported such heavyweights as Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and Redding himself. The difference is not in the musicians' playing. See, this isn't a 25-year-old Otis running in place screaming, "Gotta, gotta, gotta". This is an elder statesman. Blind, broke, and without an ounce of bitterness. So this isn't as exciting as, say a Stax recording, but that's not a bad thing. Because not only has the Soul artist, his producers, songwriters, and musicians aged, so has the market for this type of music.

This album succeeds with a great and relaxed feel and songs that are interesting and memorable. Producer Dan Penn's typically entertaining and thoughtful lyrics and Carson Whitsett's unique and delightful melodies are a perfect template for Purify's warm and assuring voice.

Whitsett's trademark soulful and ever so tasteful B-3 organ adds to the atmosphere, as does his beautiful string arrangements. The album has enough variations in style to keep it interesting, but without losing any focus. There's the Whitsett funk of "Somebody's Gotta Do It" (which features a guest spot by Spooner Oldham playing a "Mustang Sally" like organ and Muscle Shoals vet Jimmie Johnson's classic rhythmic guitar chops), the great down home tale of "The Pond" (featuring somehow simultaneously beautiful and funky work from Whitsett on piano), and potential cross over Pop classics like "Forever Changed", a song that Penn, Whitsett, and Hoy Lindsey wrote with Solomon Burke (who scored big with their "Don't Give Up On Me") in mind.

Add to all this the contributions of greats Reggie Young on guitar (Pickett, Elvis Presley, Travis Tritt) and trumpeter Wayne Jackson (Otis, Al Green), and 30 second downloads just won't do. It's truly Better to Have It.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible Soul.......2005-07-28

I recently had the chance to listen to the new Bobby Purify album and was compelled to buy 4 copies for gifts! Listening to the still moving and powerful voice of such a soul legend was like stepping back into a time when real music truly mattered. The songs on the album are a terrific blend of traditional soul and blues influenced rock...written by some of the greatest song writers of our time, Dan Penn, Bucky Lindsey and others. The production is old school with real musicians and great background vocals. I would recommend this to any music lover, and especially to anyone who loves good old fashioned soul music. Buy it, play it, and enjoy!

This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abel's leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccini's lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurisch's fine Sharpless, the singers don't please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isn't in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert Levine

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27

Anyone familiar with Cheryl Barker's Butterfly will be interested in hearing this recording. I have heard her in the role twice - in Auckland and London - and her voice has filled out as the years have gone on. She hasn't a large italianate soprano; the sound is too slender somehow. Yet there is the paradox - it has great carrying power and a decent cutting edge to make itself heard above the orchestral climaxes. What really impresses is the sense of vulnerability and moral strength she imparts, making sense of the big moments of the secong act. The sound in Act one is gorgeous (and a super D flat in theentrance aria) and she differentiates impressively between the child-bride and the embittered woman of the two acts.

She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.

Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.

This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.

As a vintage G&S listener, I appreciated this collection but I think it would mostly appeal to the specialist-completeist. A newcomer to the genre would do well to get a full operetta DVD. (I prefer the OK BBC performances to the tarted up & modernised Australian ones.)

Old-comers probably already have all these tracks as part of their collection of vintage full operetta recordings.

But don't let my idiosynchratic views deter you if you really like G&S... but not to the extent of buying all the vintage full operetta versions.

The beatles are bad enough on their own, they dont need an orchestra to make them worse.

The fact you are reading this probably means you are a fan of the Beatles. If you sometimes wish for a collection of orchestral Beatles songs but are unsure of some of the cheap numbers you have heard, well! This set is amazing, the music is rich and full of feeling, a best buy without a doubt. If it were possible I would give it six stars!

            Amazon.com

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20

this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.

Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.

Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.

            5 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2005-02-24

Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.

3 out of 5 stars Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10

I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. Keep looking if you want a set with all the orignals songs in it.

4 out of 5 stars The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28

Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.

3 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08

This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.
