The first single off of R. Kelly's TP-2.com, "I Wish," might be a moving memorial to a dead friend, but the main theme on his latest CD is sex. The first tip-off that Kelly has left the spirit world to concentrate on nookie is the CD title, which refers back to his mid-'90s smash 12 Play. Back then, Kelly made his name with a take-no-prisoners (if somewhat obvious) sensuality. Yet now this loveman sounds conflicted and ill at ease. He might offer to "Strip for You," he might lay claim for a girl who's "Like a Real Freak," he might even promise his lady "The Greatest Sex," but his manner is so tentative and so self-reflective it makes one wonder how hot the loving could really be. Kelly has been expanding his creative repertoire over the course of his past two CDs, and his latest motif is a sort of stream-of-consciousness style that constantly returns to the main thrust of the argument: a circular groove. At its best (the triumphant "I Wish"), this style is emotional and emphatic. At its worst, or when Kelly insists on using it over and over, it's the musical equivalent of having a drunk poke you in the arm repeatedly to make his point. On "Fiesta," Kelly literally builds a song out of this annoying rhythmic tic, and it's like he's on a treadmill, never getting anywhere. TP-2.com is raw and romantic, but it becomes too redundant to truly sustain the passion. --Amy Linden

Modern Marvin Gaye.......2007-02-01
12 Play Part 2.......2006-03-07
It all starts with "Strip For You", a laid-back sexy song that suits R. Kelly perfect. "R&B Thug" is slicker and more uptempo, "The Greatest Sex" is fullfilling the album concept, but it's not among the better songs of this album. "I Don't Mean It" and "Just Like That" are both slow jams, the first one however is more romantic though. "Just Like A Freak" is another sex song, If you hadn't understood that? but this song feautures rap and latin influenced music and it's unique to this album. "Fiesta" is also latin-influenced and on this album version Jay-Z doesn't appear. "Don't You Say No" yet another so-so slow jam.
"One Me" is also a slow jam, I think this is one of the better. "I Wish" is defenitely the best, but ironically it's not about sex at all, but about friends that died. A hit single and a very touching mid tempo song when R. Kelly shows his best side. "A Woman's Threat" is a midtempo, and also single released I think. "I Decided" continues the sexy trend. "I Mean (I Don't Mean It)" is a midtempo where he perform backround lyrics for himself. "All I Really Want" is great soul, but it sounds more like a song made for Tyrese then the usual R. Kelly song. "Feeling On Ya Booty" is surprisingly good, but dirty. The last song "Storm Is Over" is the second best, only after "I Wish" and neither a sex song, it reminds me of "I Believe I Can Fly", a ballad that also feautures gospel choirs.
So, what's the verdict?. A good album defenitely, You knew the dilemma already before you bouht it, so don't expect this to be a "R Kelly" or "R" but surprisingly enough it features a few non sex single and they are actually some of the best on the entire album. It may feature a few too many songs (17 if we count the remix of "I Wish" and some are not as good as others, but on the other hand the high points lift this album to great votes. Not one of his best, but not too far behind. If You're New start with the eponymous "R. Kelly" or "R".

Customer Reviews:
At its best, it's amazing..........2007-07-10
The introductory title track opens the album, a short and upbeat opener. "Strip For You" is a forgettable sex song, some early skip material before the very good "R&B Thug." This song is well produced, and R. Kelly sings in a fast, staccatoed style that works nicely. I don't like "The Greatest Sex," a fairly redundant and unmemorable song. "I Don't Mean It" and "Just Like That" are much better; while they're not among the album's best songs, they're solid and enjoyable cuts. "Like a Real Freak" and "Fiesta" are both Latin-influenced club songs, both fall under skip material for me, I wish the Jay-Z collaborated "Fiesta (Remix)" were included on the tracklist instead. "Don't You Say No" emits some nice musical vibes, and "One Me" is a pretty good song too. The album gets great at about this point. The beautiful "I Wish," arguably the finest song of his storied career, is a sad yet uplifting song to a lost friend, speaking of life since their passing. "A Woman's Threat," however, is among the worst songs on this album, six banal and repetitive minutes, and his verses sound like a shopping list. "I Decided" is among my favorites, with a great hook and good performance, "I Mean (I Don't Mean It)" is a little upbeat and funky. I think my favorite song here might be the touching remix to "I Wish," titled "I Wish (To the Homies That We Lost)." R. Kelly does not make remixes like most artists, and his remixes are entirely new compositions of songs, with the only similarities being the similar subject matter. "To the Homies That We Lost" is equally as effective as the original "I Wish," a more personal narrative to his lost friend. The production is beautiful, and this song is excellent. The pretty good "All I Want" comes next, followed by the wonderful "Feelin' on Yo Booty." This infamous song showcases R. Kelly at his seductive best, being humorous and clever despite maybe crossing the line a little here and there. The album closes with another of the finest songs in his discography, the motivational "The Storm Is Over," a well-written gospel-tinged track, complete with a dramatic key change at the end.
When this album is good, it's great, but at its worst, it's redundant and forgettable. One can't deny that this contains some of the very best songs R. Kelly has to offer, and for that fact alone this is an album I recommend. R. Kelly is one of the finest talents in R&B, and much of this album is a great example of this. More economical buyers might just want to buy the half-dozen or so best songs, but overall this is a worthy purchase to make.
