Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The first US release for this soulful Brit, featuring bonus tracks not on the original UK album.

Lewis Taylor has been releasing psychedelic soul albums in the U.K. to incredible reviews and a rabid cult of fans that includes some of the biggest names in music. Writing, playing and producing nearly every note himself, the press has compared Taylor to Marvin Gaye, Brian Wilson and Stevie Wonder. Stoned received the best reviews of Taylor’s career, but has only been available on the artists’ own website and HMV stores in England. And we just didn’t think that was fair.

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgic Listening from Year's Past.......2007-01-12

Hearing Laura Nyro sing her own songs is something special. You could feel the emotion unlike when you listen to the other artists who have performed her songs.

My only regret is that my favorite, "Sweet Blindness", is a live recording from 1976. I would rather have the studio version, which is how most of the recordings on both discs are presented. It's still a winner in my book.

3 out of 5 stars marred recording of mostly good music.......2006-10-13

Unfortunately, none of the previous reviewers thought to mention that however good the music may be, a significant portion of this collection is hard to listen to because of poor engineering. Old recordings are simply thrown onto CD without any modifications/improvements. Hence, you get lots of splatter on higher notes (think tinny record player from the 60's). Classics like Stoney End, Billy's Song and Blowin' Away are the worst of the lot. If you don't mind skipping over the bad cuts, there will be something here for you. Consider buying this one second hand at a deep discount.

5 out of 5 stars Great Overview Of A Terrific Talent.......2006-10-12

I've been a fan of Laura Nyro since the late 60's and was fortunate enough to have seen her perform in person from that time until the early 90's.
Ms. Nyro's talent as a songwriter is well documented, as are the depth and sensitivity of her lyrics.
Her talent as a singer is less celebrated depite her tremendous ability to put a song "over" and make the listeners think she is singing just to them.
This is a great CD to introduce newcomers to a fabulous talent cut down far too soon in life.
God bless Laura Nyro.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful Songwriter, Terrible Singer.......2006-07-03

The only cut on this CD that works as a vocal is the haunting "Billy's Blues." Otherwise Ms. Nyro's singing voice is this incredibly unattractive soprano wailing all over the place; just like Sandra Bernhard when she tries to sing 'seriously'.

3 out of 5 stars Overrated?.......2005-08-27

Before buying this anthology, I was aware of Laura Nyro's reputation, but my only exposure to her music was through cover versions by the Fifth Dimension and others. But hearing some of her original songs used to great effect in the soundtrack of "A Home At The End Of The World" made me want to explore her work further. I'm not sure this uneven collection was the right introduction. Since I think that you should judge a artist by his/her best work, maybe one or two of Nyro's classic early albums would have been a better starting point. Some of these songs are indeed phenomenal, but by the end of the collection some aspects of Nyro's distinctive style begin to grate. Like a lot of great songwriters, she was not a first-rate singer. Too often when she strains at high notes, her soprano voice turns into a poorly-controlled, artless squeal. Many, if not most, of her lyrics are cyptically and neurotically personal. The impression of an unbalanced, self-involved persona is reinforced by the strange image on the CD cover, a photo of Nyro staring into the camera while pulling out a handful of her long hair. She could be a mental patient. I'll keep working on this one.

5 out of 5 stars This is a MUST for anyone who enjoys classical music ... .......2006-06-07

...BUT not if you take it SO seriously that you have lost your sense of humor.

Peter Schickele (with whom I am occasionally confused - we apparently look alike!) - has got to be one of my all-time favorite composers. When I was in graduate school, I took considerable abuse from my fellow music lovers for actually having MORE albums by P.D.Q Bach than by J. S. Bach (though I think it was barely a one-point margin, really...)

But the "New Horizons in Music Appreciation" approach to Beethoven's 5th symphony is not only a musical analysis of the piece as it is being played, but a slam on the constant "blah-blah-blah" that one hears during ANY sports event.

"My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth" has got to be my all-time favorite spoof of the overly pompous "art song" oratorio. I've encouraged one of my colleagues (who directs the college chorale where I teach) to include it in a program, to no avail. One of these days, I'll put my money where my mouth is - and buy sheet music for the entire chorale.

This is one of only two albums that I have in (a) vinyl, (b) tape, and (c) CD format. That should be some indication of how very, very special I believe this to be. [The other, for those who are interested, is Joan Baez' "Diamonds and Rust."]

This has been around for years, and there's a good reason. Schickele is not only funny when he wants to be, but a supremely accomplished composer and musician, with dozens and dozens of serious musical scores to his credit as well.

5 out of 5 stars PDQ Bach -- The Spike Jones of Classical Music.......2006-03-16

For the classical music lover, this is an amazing spoof. For those who do not know classical music well, this is still highly entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Recaptured (Twisted) Youth.......2003-03-31

My friend and I saw the good Prof. Schickele here in Pasadena last night (March 29th-- AND the conductor of the Pasadena Symphony is Jorge Meister!)-- and the last number on the program was the WONDERFUL "The Seasonings"-- I had a very hard time even after all these years of first hearing this on a REAL record of not singing along with every little tune!!! This piece last night, being sung by singers whom I do not doubt were not even born when I first heard a recording of it, were as good as the ones I remember from my decadent youth on the original recording. Buy this C.D. if only for this piece!

5 out of 5 stars I store it in the CD changer in my car........2002-10-06

My favorite single line of music from this is from "The Unbegun Symphony". Who would think to combine "You are my sunshine", a
tune I have always thought of as sappy sweet, played on violins,
with a background of horns, (I don't know what piece, but it
makes me thing of something noble and civilized) making it a
definitive statement of a benevolent sense of life.
PDQ Bach's other works are delighfully absurd, as are Peter
Schickele's commentaries. (Well I have a new set of friends now)

5 out of 5 stars New Horizons in Music Appreciation Indeed..........2002-08-08

It was while sitting in Music Appreciation in college that I was first introduced to the work of P.D.Q. Bach, specifically the track "New Horizons in Music Appreciation: Beethoven's Fifth Symphony," in which Professor Peter Schickele and Robert Dennis serve as the announcers for a spirited game involving the first movement of that particular work. Not only was it funny ("He's playing a cadenza! He's out of his mind! He thinks its an oboe concerto!") it was also more informative than the professor ("I get the feeling we are going to hear a lot of that four note motif, Bob").

One of the things about P.D.Q. Bach is that the more I learned about classical music the funnier I found it. Yes, I have enough memories of my mother insisting on playing the Texaco Opera quiz throughout the house on a Saturday afternoon to appreciate why "What's my Melodic Line?" and its exploration of the mysteries of the Baroque is funny, but it was not until I saw "Amadeus" and listened to "The Marriage of Figaro" that I understood why the recitatias in the Cantata "Iphigenia in Brooklyn" were hysterical (I was tempted to share this story of Iphigenia with my Classical Mythology class, but given their tentativeness to explore Euripides I did not think it wise to have them get neck deep in Schickele). Then again, the Madrigal "My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth" really needs no explanation, so there is something for everybody here, no matter what you level of understanding of classical music.

In discussing the works of P.D.Q. Bach with others it becomes clear that you can no more put together an idea collection of his "best" work than you can for lesser composers like Mozart or Beethoven. But you are certainly going to find a few old favorites and maybe one or two pieces that you have hitherto managed to avoid.

Now, if we can only get a University of Southern North Dakota at Hoople t-shirt...

More fun than any tribute album has a right to be, Stoned Immaculate is clearly a labor of love that manages to embrace the spirit of the Doors without regressing into parading a line of Jim Morrison impersonators through the studio. Much credit goes to producer Ralph Sall, who--in addition to setting up collaborations between the surviving Doors and an array of artists from John Lee Hooker to Days of the New--also breaks out the beats and samples to create a few "new" Doors tracks. While Sall is no Fatboy Slim (despite the winking nod to "Bird of Prey" during the fadeout of "Under Waterfall"), his reconstructions add texture and variety, especially when the late William Burroughs steps up to the mic. But the true highlights here are the more organic collaborations: the three remaining Doors backing Bo Diddley and Ian Astbury; an unexpectedly great "Love Me Two Times" from Aerosmith; and Stone Temple Pilots helping Kreiger and Manzarek "Break on Through" even harder on a track that threatens to transcend the original. Hell, even the weaker contributions beat out Jose Feliciano. Come to think of it, if the Doors are still auditioning Morrison replacements (Kevin Coyne and Howard Werth no longer being available), STP's Weiland, Creed's Stapp, or the Cult's Astbury all acquit themselves well enough here to warrant an offer. -- Bill Forman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars one of the best rock tribute albums ever.......2007-03-03

I enjoy this more than any other artist tribute album I've ever heard, at least in the rock genre. Superb performances by all artists concerned, couple with excellent production values. Love the way clips of Morrison's poetry or between-song patter are mixed in here and there.

4 out of 5 stars Morrison lives.......2007-02-17

STONED IMMACULATE brings the DOORS nicely into the 21st Century with creative covers performed by obvious DOORS fans of considerable talent. Highlights include Smash Mouth's searing "Peace Frog," Morrison/Hooker's "Rock House Blues" duet, the "Cosmic Movie" DOORS collage, Oleander's juiced-up "Hello I Love You," and Ian Astbury's desyrupized "Touch Me."

This collection is certain to please lovers of late 60's rock as well as all DOORS fans.

TOTAL PLAYING TIME -- 71:38

4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprising.......2006-10-27

Tribute albums suck and everyone knows it. Usually, although not in all cases, a tribute album is a CD compiled of musical has-beens who ineffectively cover an artists songs. The first thing that makes Stoned Immaculate better than that average tribute album is the fact that Ray Manzarek, Robbie Krieger, and John Densmore all perform on the album and have given their blessing to the project. The 2nd is that (at the time) none of these bands were has-beens and some of them are actually great bands. Not all the performances are great and some artists were mis-matched, but some artists who people would hold little faith in prevail (Creed anybody?). There's also an unreleased Doors track called Under Waterfall, which is a beautiful song. The best covers on here are Stone Temple Pilots 'Break on Through,' Creed 'Riders on the Storm,' and The Cult 'Wild Child.' That's not to say the other ones aren't good, but these are the best. Scott Weiland (vocalist of STP) has cited Jim Morrison as his inspiration. Him and his band don't let that go to waste here. On 'Riders on the Storm' Creed rocks out, creating an almost better song. The Cult, meanwhile, takes a song that was never amazing or anything and makes it way better. This album, while not perfect, does have a lot of great bands at the peak of their musical power paying tribute to their idols. It's wonderful to hear The Doors' legacy live on and it's cool to hear some great artists singing their songs.

1. Stone Temple Pilots "Break on Through"-5/5-This may be blasphemy. But this version could be better (or equally good) with the original. You can tell that Scott Weiland truly holds a lot of respect for Morrison. STP takes the song and pays homage to it, but also makes it their own.
2. Creed "Riders on the Storm"-5/5-I've never been a big Creed fan, but Scott Stapp does a pretty good Jim Morrison impression. Not only that though. This version rocks. They add an extra edge that wasn't there in the original version.
3. Train "Light My Fire"-4/5-This version's OK. The keyboard opening is mysteriously absent. It's not bad, but it definitely sounds like a song off a tribute album.
4. Smash Mouth "Peace Frog"-3/5-The band added some funkiness to it, but I'm not a big fan of what they did.
5. Days of the New "L.A. Woman"-5/5-This cover, although it feels rushed, isn't bad.
I've never even heard of Days of the New but this is cool.
6. Aerosmith "Love Me Two Times"-5/5-This was one I was really looking forward to hearing. Aerosmith does a great version of the song. It's heavier (not by much though) than the original and it's awesome.
7. The Doors "Under Waterfall"-5/5-I assume this is a Doors song that was left unreleased. Which is a shame, because it's actually a great song. It's lyrics are really cool (obviously) and it's actually catchy and kind of beautiful too.
8. The Cult "Wild Child"-5/5-This has never been one of my favorite Doors songs, but The Cult turn it into a better song than it ever was.
9. Jim Morrison "Roadhouse Rap"-5/5-Probably recorded as an intro to Roadhouse Blues. It's pretty cool and shows a kind of fun side of Morrison.
10. John Lee Hooker & Jim Morrison "Roadhouse Blues"-5/5-Brilliantly intercutting Morrison's vocals and John Lee Hooker's guitar and vocals; This song is great too.
11. William S. Burroughs "Is Everybody In?"-5/5-It's a poem read to the backbeat of a bunch of Doors songs. It's pretty interesting and a little bit haunting too.
12. Oleander "Hello, I Love You"-4/5-This song holds a special place in my heart and I was kind of disappointed with this version. It's not bad, but the guy's voice is kind of lame.
13. Ian Astbury "Touch Me"-5/5-I saw Ian perform this song live with Riders on the Storm; This has never been one of my favorite Doors song, but both his performance of it and the way he performs it makes it better.
14. Perry Farrell & Exene "Children of the Night"-3/5-I don't like Perry Farrell or Jane's Addiction and I guess I don't like Exene that much either. This is probably my least favorite track.
15. Bo Diddley "Love Her Madly"-3/5-This is less-than-spectacular. He makes the song his own, it bares almost no resemblance to the original. Problem is...That's the problem.
16. The Doors "The Cosmic Movie"-5/5-This is essentially a bunch of stray poems and excerpts from Doors song thrown into a juxtaposed mess with a "Five to One" backbeat. Hate to admit it, though. It's kind of interesting.
17. Days of the New "The End"-4/5-It grew on me for sure. It's extremely faithful to the original version, but they could've picked a much better band to do the cover.

GRADE: B

5 out of 5 stars Worth it just for the Burroughs track.......2006-07-01

Awesome track. I'd happily buy the album just for the Burroughs track. It's music mixed together with William S. Burroughs' famous voice as he rambles on quoting Morrison ("Blood on the streets") and then breaks into a discussion of Morrison ("Died in a bathtub in Paris...seems like a g**amn strange thing to happen.")

At the end it blends together with Jim's voice. It's a really bizarre but fascinating track.

4 out of 5 stars Loved It Only One Time.......2006-06-12

This is not a great album, but it does have its highs and lows. The album starts with a couple of well known acts covering popular Doors tracks. These two covers sold the album for me. What I didn't know were the gems hidden here. A couple of "new" Doors songs, Under Waterfall and The Cosmic Movie, the latter being a must listen for all Morrison lovers, as Jim speaks of death being the ultimate end, and to make sure you fill your life with excitement so you're not bored watching it when you die... truly poignant considered the circumstances that followed. Also noteworthy are Aerosmith's cover of Love Me Two Times (although a bit lackluster), and Bo Diddley fronting the Doors on Love Her Madly. Now for the negative... if you want to save yourself some grief, skip Roadhouse Blues with John Lee Hooker... it's Blasphemy! capital B! Hearing the classic "redone" with JLH talking over the instrumental breaks is torturous. Also Days of the New are unimpressive and must be proteges of the record label or something. Worth the money for the few highlights and its "eclectiveness".

4 out of 5 stars Probably the best you can expect from these guys.......2007-05-05

If you were to only buy one Kottonmouth Kings album, this would have to be it. Altough in my opinion it has alot of filler songs(songs not meant to be great but good enough for hardcore fans). This cd best represents the group and acts like an introduction into their type of genre. Songs which are the most notable are as follows;
Sleeper- A fast-paced intro into the world of suburb-pop-punk-hip hop which this group seems to engulf itself in.

Rest of my life- A classic stoner tune in every aspect. Even if you don't smoke weed, you'll catch yourself singing along.

Strange Dayz- A great example of how KMK can get down lyrically with a hard hip-hop flavor.

Tangerine Sky- My personal favorite, call it ska, punk, or even hip-hop. Something about KMK can appeal to just about anybody.

This album is an underground classic! No bad songs on this album at all. I highly recommend this album to everyone, wheather you're a rap fan or a punk fan, it dosen't matter, this album has something for everyone. Even my mum likes some of KMK's songs (Positive Vibes, Let The Sunshine, Peace Of Mind, Tangerine Sky), and my mum hates all rap usually lol. Anyways, everyone should buy this album. \

Album Description

The first US release for this soulful Brit, featuring bonus tracks not on the original UK album.

Lewis Taylor has been releasing psychedelic soul albums in the U.K. to incredible reviews and a rabid cult of fans that includes some of the biggest names in music. Writing, playing and producing nearly every note himself, the press has compared Taylor to Marvin Gaye, Brian Wilson and Stevie Wonder. Stoned received the best reviews of Taylor's career, but has only been available on the artists' own website and HMV stores in England. And we just didn't think that was fair.

5 out of 5 stars Versatility reigns.......2007-05-07

I had heard one song on XM radio and looked into Lewis Taylor. This CD is the one the reviews turned to so I listened to the sound bites Amazon offers. I wasn't terrible impressed, but bought the CD anyway on the strength of the reviews.

What a great surprise. You have to listen to the entire CD a few times to really understand what an awesome talent Lewis Taylor is, vocally, songwriting and musically. He reminds you of a bunch of different musicians (Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Steve Miller....) on different tracks until you realize that he isn't copying other greats, he is the real deal. He is in a class of own. He is not easy to label, he is just Lewis Taylor and that's enough. This guy just never caught a break to catch on, but is certainly worthy of that kind of popularity.

I can't imagine any rock n roll or R&B fan being disappointed with this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Seriously good music for grown-ups.......2007-04-13

Stoned stands at only #34,339 in Amazon.com's sales ranking of cds. How? Why? Am I living in some kind of upside down word where talent and quality are rewarded with neglect and a singular absence of talent is blessed with constant media coverage? I won't mention an example of the latter group by name - I am sure that we can all think of a couple of good examples without exerting ourselves. Now, I could be an Anglo snob and bemoan the fact that Lewis Taylor is ignored here in North America but is well-respected and popular in his native UK. Well, this cd occupies the coveted 20,647th place on the Amazon.co.uk,list! Obviously each side of the Atlantic suffers from the same lamentable lack of good taste. Of the thirty-two persons who have posted reviews here at Amazon.com only one has awarded fewer than five stars. This suggests to me that those idiot radio programmers have missed the boat on this one. It suggests that if you hear this cd you like it. So why only #34,339? The rather obvious answer is that not enough people have been given the opportunity to hear Stoned.

He's English, he's white and he has recorded one of the best soul albums released by any artist in the last ten years. I could be writing of Amy Winehouse couldn't I? He writes his own music and lyrics. He plays all of the instruments and sings all of the vocals. Some times these multi- talented individuals are too clever for their own good. You listen and you can hear them thinking "God, I'm so good!" Stoned does not suffer from this affliction. As I listen I do not so much think of geek in studio as I do singer on stage with tight and funky band. On different songs Lewis Taylor sounds like Lenny Kravitz (when he sounds like himself), Curtis, Marvin, Prince or Al Green. This is a good thing. He is not merely copying his presumed idols. The vocal styles fit the music perfectly as Taylor moves from soul ballads to his more funky musings. He finishes the record with a lovely Beach Boy-ish Melt Away.

This is a terrific recording by an immensely talented artist. I read a review where the writer called this seriously good music for grown-ups. He hit the nail right on the head.

5 out of 5 stars Lewis Taylor...Where have you been all my life?.......2006-07-09

Ridiculously good. Who woulda thought that you'd want to compare a rather average white looking European's singing voice to that of urban musical legends? This CD is incredible. All time favorite cut is "Shame", but Lewis' take on the beautiful Bryan Wilson tune "Melt Away" literally brings tears to my eyes. Unfortunately he, like so many other talented neo soul artists will never be noticed as their "look" and "attitude" isn't nearly as appealing as less talented folks. Nonetheless...he's got a fan for life in me!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic album!.......2006-06-01

this disc showed up in my mail yesterday with a note from my sister saying that i might like it. i had never heard of lewis taylor and was a little skeptical. from the first few seconds of the first cut, i was totally hooked. i don't know the last time that i found an album that i could listen to non stop from the moment that i got it. interesting mix of influences and sounds (other reviewers cover it well). very current, very cool sound. enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Unique Album.......2006-05-08

This is something else!! Check out "Shame" first. I just love all the styles on this cut. Everything from the Sly Stone's "There's a Riot going On" to Leslie West's "Mountain" to Marvin Gaye to Ashford and Simpson To Edgar Winter to Maroon 5!!!! I believe in listening to College Radio and I first heard the opening track on WFUV in NYC last month in my car and I was knocked out. As a former program director at a local Long Island College (C.W. Post), I used to listen to 40 to 60 albums a week, I was rarely knocked out. As soon as I got home, I ordered the CD and I have been playing it since. I am surprised that Lewis Taylor isn't a huge seccess yet!! - I am sure he will be very soon.

5 out of 5 stars OMFG.......2006-08-15

I never write Amazon reviews.

I just popped in Stoned & Dethroned DVDA from this DualDisc.

WORTH EVERY PENNY

I have heard this album a million times, it's never sounded this good.

I was really on the fence about buying it due to the cost, how many lousy DualDiscs I have heard lately, and the fact that I already owned every JAMC CD.

TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLY worth the money - make sure you have a DVDA setup to listen to it on. Otherwise, probably not worth $13.99

If you don't have a DVDA setup - worth buying one just to listen to this record.

4 out of 5 stars try again.......2006-07-20

In regards to the copyright protection...
I recently picked up the DualDisc version of Automatic by the JAMC, and when I tried to load it into iTunes, it wouldn't extract the audio. I quit iTunes, ejected the disc and tried again. It worked. It was slow, but I was eventually able to load it into iTunes, and subsequently my iPod. Give it another couple tries.

3 out of 5 stars A 5-star album that loses 2 stars for copy protection.......2006-07-20

This is one of my favorite albums of all time; I know it isn't the best Jesus and Mary Chain album, but it is very personal for me and I like it an awful lot.

But, I am very disappointed that the CD-side cannot be read by my computer and, hence, cannot be copied on to the ipod. It saddens me to give this 3 stars. Who on earth is going to steal this? It has been gone for a decade and noone even missed the damn thing but for a few geeks like me (and most people buying it probably owned it already anyhow, like me).

followup: to the reviewer who got 'automatic' to copy onto the ipod, I do not know how that worked for you. For me, the CD was physically unreadable- the hardware itself spun the disc around and around making a terrible noise once every 10 seconds or so. It is a DVD-rom drive so I don't know if that has anything to do with it (but usally the drive reads CDs perfectly well). maybe it is not copy protection but a hardware incompatibility issue; i'll look into it.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds better than ever!! Get the Dual Disc!!.......2006-07-15

Stoned and Dethroned is my least favorite JAMC album, but I still love it! And now it sounds better than I've ever heard it on Dual Disc! The CD side is a big improvement in sound, and the DVD side is even better! The videos are all great, and cheers to RHINO for including the video for the non-album track Snakedriver here!! Snakefinger, if you haven't heard it, is one of the best kick-a** singles JAMC ever released! It was the last single they released for Blanco Y Negro Records.

5 out of 5 stars Seeps into thy psyche.......2005-11-08

Extremely cohesive collection of songs - the lyrics mean a lot to folks who've been there. One way to describe this album is compare it to one of Hitchcock's movies. Fans of JAMC know they can go off like a bomb at any second and this album is so restrained they develop a tension that is wonderful, the definition of suspense. Meanwhile the songs are piercing in a country genre way. Full of intuition. Very worthy indeed. Lyrics to impress Johnny Cash fans and songs that have an earthy realism

4 out of 5 stars William's mellow album.......2005-09-01

What a surprise after JMC's powerful "Honey's Dead"! It's almost as if the Reid's realized they probably couldn't match that album, so, with the help of a terrific rhythm section (Ben Lurie on bass, Steve Monti on drums), they mellowed out their sound to give us the fine "Stoned and Dethroned."

What's interesting here is that, for the first time, we know which Reid brother wrote which song. Since "S&D" contains virtually wall-to-wall softer, more melodic songs, one can expect William to be the greater influence, and, indeed, he wrote more than twice as many songs on the album as did brother Jim. We can also look back and guess which brother wrote which songs on the previous albums. For instance, the grungy "Teenage Lust," ("Hole" on "S&D" sounds basically the same) and the propulsive "Sugar Ray" are classic Jim, whereas the melodic "Catchfire" and "Almost Gold," surely belong to William.

"S&D" really consists of no weak songs, which is pretty amazing since there are seventeen of them. But if I had to name my favorites, they would be the Sonny and Cher like "Sometimes Always" (with the lovely Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star), "Between Us," "She," "These Days," and the effervescent "Girlfriend."

"Stoned and Dethroned" may be a departure from the typical JMC sound (more William than Jim), but it's certainly a welcome and successful one.

5 out of 5 stars Depends on your mood.......2005-08-20

A wiseguy reviewer I once read said the Jesus & Mary Chain made two types of music - music for those smoking dope, and for those on crack. It does capture a bit of the disparity in their music, with highly melodic, tuneful musings that (almost) belong on pop radio on one hand, to much edgier and grinding riffs on the other.

Running with that analogy, this album falls into the pot-smoking portion of the band's catalog, more in the spirit of Darklands than of Automatic or some of their 80's efforts. I found this album fantastic, a continuous stream of mellow acoustic songs each of which are winners. The album had a minor radio hit with the duet "Sometimes Always" - that said, it is probably one of the most under-appreciated albums of the 90's given how good it is from top to bottom. "Artistic" is the word that comes to mind to describe the lush melodies on rueful lyrics that permeate this album.

5 out of 5 stars The best album nobody ever listened to.......2004-10-30

Since no more than a smattering of people will ever buy this album, much less arrive at the Amazon reviews page and actually read the reviews, why am I bothering to write this? Passion I guess. This is one of my favorite albums of all time, and I get inspired when listening to it. I have to make my testimonial to the JAMC, and in particular to their later work.

The whole album is fantastic, all the way through, and I am particular to tracks 16 & 17. The music has it's own identity, but it is perhaps most derivative of the earlier, but not earliest, rolling stones. Early 70's stones, where they had settled into an identity and played stripped down rock and roll. But this record has a more soulful and spiritual bent which shows a melancholy maturity and reflects a life-experience that transcends anything the stones ever did. God Help Me and You've Been a Friend are prime examples.

A plug for Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star on track 3. She steals the show, and is an appropriate addition to the album, as she stands, in this writers opinion, as another grossly underheard artist. And the guitar playing on this album...listen to the end of Till it Shines, or Feeling Lucky...and it should speak for itself.

4 out of 5 stars A great mellow album!.......2004-04-15

I've been a J&MC fan for a long time now and I enjoy all of their albums but this one is very special because all the songs are good and there are great guitar playing and strong song writing in this album. My fav is girlfriend but I like the whole album. It does need more hard stuff on this to make it more dynamic but if you want to listen to skeleton pop/rock with good acoustic playing, this album is for you. The lyrics are negative like in all of their albums, but it makes the album more stronger due to the acoustic/country-tinged/rock playing that you can feel the emotions in the music and the lyrics. Like all of J&MC albums, it takes a while to fully appreciate the greatness of their songs. Too bad that suck as a live band, otherwise, they would have been more popular. This band will be in the future the greatest band that didn't get any recognition in the last 20 years of the 20th century.

Album Description

Stoned chronicles the life and suspicous death of Rolling Stones original guitarist and co-founder Brian Jones (Gregory), who was found at the bottom of his swimming pool weeks after being let go from the band. Packed with sex, drugs and rock and roll, the film explores the wild and wicked world of Brian Jones. The soundtrack creates an opportunity to revisit timeless rock and to experience familiar favorites in an entirely new way.

4 out of 5 stars Good Soundtrack For A Bad Movie.......2006-04-07

Even though the movie was a disapointment, the soundtrack to Stoned was pretty good. Of course it would have been better for a Rolling Stones soundtrack, but this wasn't a bad alternative. Some really good songs on here. A mixture of some origianal versions, White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane, Lazy Sunday by The Small Faces and Stop Breakin' Down by Robert Johnson with some new covers of Little Red Rooster by the Counterfeit Stones and Not Fade Away by The Bees are really good - two songs which were also covered by the original Stones in 1964.

If only the movie were this good.

3 out of 5 stars Decent but not great........2005-06-22

I'll be brief on this one. This EP is OK but it leaves a lot to be desired. It has good beats but it lacks on melody. Dark and slow. It is just not as edgy as some of their other material. Good but kind of boring is the best way I can describe it.

5 out of 5 stars Just Great.......2003-05-29

This album is so fine. It's just very chill and every loop feels like it's placed just right.

5 out of 5 stars I am only reviewing this in complete disbelief.......2003-02-25

I saw that the average of the other reviews brought this CD 4 out of 5 stars. Shocking. Bizarre. Completely unbelivable. The cover may look strikingly like Simon and Garfunkel, leading some folks of dubious taste or vision to have accidentally reviewed the wrong album. That's about the only thing I can think of that could explain anything less than 5+ stars.

I have two kittens. Their names are Kruder and Dorfmeister. This CD is the reason why. It is the single best CD I have ever heard in my life.

If you happen to own the "Hackers" soundtrack, the Original Bedroom Rockers track is from this CD. Give it a listen -- or about 2,000 listens. You'll be able to. Very easily. Downbeat, mellow, slow and hypnotic electronica-flavored acid jazz that I have neer seen a woman listen to twice without beginning to undress by the second track.

That, I believe, should give you some small insight to the power of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars the worlds group.......2005-03-02

dr hook was only the greatest, most versatile group of their century. they seemed to play anything well, from dope to love songs, and the love songs were always from the heart. no other group has ever come close to their talents. its a shame that they had to break up. i too this day still go and see dr hook featuring ray sawyer whenever they play, and at their age, they still rock.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly funny, but some schlock as well........2005-02-06

Shel Silverstein was a witty, often very spot-on songwriter....mostly. Dr. Hook was a witty, outrageously funny band....mostly. And this collection of Dr. Hook serenading the listener with several songs from the pen of Shel Silverstein is, well, mostly outrageously funny and often very spot-on. But not always.

The first 16 selections on this CD are the best; you get completely gonzo stuff like "Roland The Roadie And Gertrude The Groupie," "Marie Lavauk" and their biggest seller, "Cover Of The 'Rolling Stone'" ("Wanna buy 5 copies for my mother!") cheek-to-jowl with more conventional but still well-done songs like "Sylvia's Mother" (which stays just on the edge of soap opera without actually falling in), "The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan" (later a hit for Marianne Faithfull), "The Wonderful Soupstone" and "Carry Me, Carrie." Those are all terrific. What's not so terrific are later Hook/Silverstein match-ups like "I Don't Want To Be Alone Tonight," "More Like The Movies" and "Pleasure And Pain," where big-time mawkishness sets in and the lewd campiness that was the band's strength is purged and flattened completely. All it really means, though, was that even the mighty were/are allowed to stumble now and again and if you've ever yearned for a time tunnel back to a period where you could be culturally incorrect and get away with it (cf. "Freakin' At The Freaker's Ball"), this may well be what you're looking for.
