Nostalgic Listening from Year's Past.......2007-01-12
My only regret is that my favorite, "Sweet Blindness", is a live recording from 1976. I would rather have the studio version, which is how most of the recordings on both discs are presented. It's still a winner in my book.

Great Overview Of A Terrific Talent.......2006-10-12
Ms. Nyro's talent as a songwriter is well documented, as are the depth and sensitivity of her lyrics.
Her talent as a singer is less celebrated depite her tremendous ability to put a song "over" and make the listeners think she is singing just to them.
This is a great CD to introduce newcomers to a fabulous talent cut down far too soon in life.
God bless Laura Nyro.

This is a MUST for anyone who enjoys classical music ... .......2006-06-07
Peter Schickele (with whom I am occasionally confused - we apparently look alike!) - has got to be one of my all-time favorite composers. When I was in graduate school, I took considerable abuse from my fellow music lovers for actually having MORE albums by P.D.Q Bach than by J. S. Bach (though I think it was barely a one-point margin, really...)
But the "New Horizons in Music Appreciation" approach to Beethoven's 5th symphony is not only a musical analysis of the piece as it is being played, but a slam on the constant "blah-blah-blah" that one hears during ANY sports event.
"My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth" has got to be my all-time favorite spoof of the overly pompous "art song" oratorio. I've encouraged one of my colleagues (who directs the college chorale where I teach) to include it in a program, to no avail. One of these days, I'll put my money where my mouth is - and buy sheet music for the entire chorale.
This is one of only two albums that I have in (a) vinyl, (b) tape, and (c) CD format. That should be some indication of how very, very special I believe this to be. [The other, for those who are interested, is Joan Baez' "Diamonds and Rust."]
This has been around for years, and there's a good reason. Schickele is not only funny when he wants to be, but a supremely accomplished composer and musician, with dozens and dozens of serious musical scores to his credit as well.

Recaptured (Twisted) Youth.......2003-03-31
I store it in the CD changer in my car........2002-10-06
tune I have always thought of as sappy sweet, played on violins,
with a background of horns, (I don't know what piece, but it
makes me thing of something noble and civilized) making it a
definitive statement of a benevolent sense of life.
PDQ Bach's other works are delighfully absurd, as are Peter
Schickele's commentaries. (Well I have a new set of friends now)
New Horizons in Music Appreciation Indeed..........2002-08-08
One of the things about P.D.Q. Bach is that the more I learned about classical music the funnier I found it. Yes, I have enough memories of my mother insisting on playing the Texaco Opera quiz throughout the house on a Saturday afternoon to appreciate why "What's my Melodic Line?" and its exploration of the mysteries of the Baroque is funny, but it was not until I saw "Amadeus" and listened to "The Marriage of Figaro" that I understood why the recitatias in the Cantata "Iphigenia in Brooklyn" were hysterical (I was tempted to share this story of Iphigenia with my Classical Mythology class, but given their tentativeness to explore Euripides I did not think it wise to have them get neck deep in Schickele). Then again, the Madrigal "My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth" really needs no explanation, so there is something for everybody here, no matter what you level of understanding of classical music.
In discussing the works of P.D.Q. Bach with others it becomes clear that you can no more put together an idea collection of his "best" work than you can for lesser composers like Mozart or Beethoven. But you are certainly going to find a few old favorites and maybe one or two pieces that you have hitherto managed to avoid.
Now, if we can only get a University of Southern North Dakota at Hoople t-shirt...

More fun than any tribute album has a right to be, Stoned Immaculate is clearly a labor of love that manages to embrace the spirit of the Doors without regressing into parading a line of Jim Morrison impersonators through the studio. Much credit goes to producer Ralph Sall, who--in addition to setting up collaborations between the surviving Doors and an array of artists from John Lee Hooker to Days of the New--also breaks out the beats and samples to create a few "new" Doors tracks. While Sall is no Fatboy Slim (despite the winking nod to "Bird of Prey" during the fadeout of "Under Waterfall"), his reconstructions add texture and variety, especially when the late William Burroughs steps up to the mic. But the true highlights here are the more organic collaborations: the three remaining Doors backing Bo Diddley and Ian Astbury; an unexpectedly great "Love Me Two Times" from Aerosmith; and Stone Temple Pilots helping Kreiger and Manzarek "Break on Through" even harder on a track that threatens to transcend the original. Hell, even the weaker contributions beat out Jose Feliciano. Come to think of it, if the Doors are still auditioning Morrison replacements (Kevin Coyne and Howard Werth no longer being available), STP's Weiland, Creed's Stapp, or the Cult's Astbury all acquit themselves well enough here to warrant an offer. -- Bill FormanCustomer Reviews:
one of the best rock tribute albums ever.......2007-03-03
Morrison lives.......2007-02-17
This collection is certain to please lovers of late 60's rock as well as all DOORS fans.
TOTAL PLAYING TIME -- 71:38
Pleasantly Surprising.......2006-10-27
1. Stone Temple Pilots "Break on Through"-5/5-This may be blasphemy. But this version could be better (or equally good) with the original. You can tell that Scott Weiland truly holds a lot of respect for Morrison. STP takes the song and pays homage to it, but also makes it their own.
2. Creed "Riders on the Storm"-5/5-I've never been a big Creed fan, but Scott Stapp does a pretty good Jim Morrison impression. Not only that though. This version rocks. They add an extra edge that wasn't there in the original version.
3. Train "Light My Fire"-4/5-This version's OK. The keyboard opening is mysteriously absent. It's not bad, but it definitely sounds like a song off a tribute album.
4. Smash Mouth "Peace Frog"-3/5-The band added some funkiness to it, but I'm not a big fan of what they did.
5. Days of the New "L.A. Woman"-5/5-This cover, although it feels rushed, isn't bad.
I've never even heard of Days of the New but this is cool.
6. Aerosmith "Love Me Two Times"-5/5-This was one I was really looking forward to hearing. Aerosmith does a great version of the song. It's heavier (not by much though) than the original and it's awesome.
7. The Doors "Under Waterfall"-5/5-I assume this is a Doors song that was left unreleased. Which is a shame, because it's actually a great song. It's lyrics are really cool (obviously) and it's actually catchy and kind of beautiful too.
8. The Cult "Wild Child"-5/5-This has never been one of my favorite Doors songs, but The Cult turn it into a better song than it ever was.
9. Jim Morrison "Roadhouse Rap"-5/5-Probably recorded as an intro to Roadhouse Blues. It's pretty cool and shows a kind of fun side of Morrison.
10. John Lee Hooker & Jim Morrison "Roadhouse Blues"-5/5-Brilliantly intercutting Morrison's vocals and John Lee Hooker's guitar and vocals; This song is great too.
11. William S. Burroughs "Is Everybody In?"-5/5-It's a poem read to the backbeat of a bunch of Doors songs. It's pretty interesting and a little bit haunting too.
12. Oleander "Hello, I Love You"-4/5-This song holds a special place in my heart and I was kind of disappointed with this version. It's not bad, but the guy's voice is kind of lame.
13. Ian Astbury "Touch Me"-5/5-I saw Ian perform this song live with Riders on the Storm; This has never been one of my favorite Doors song, but both his performance of it and the way he performs it makes it better.
14. Perry Farrell & Exene "Children of the Night"-3/5-I don't like Perry Farrell or Jane's Addiction and I guess I don't like Exene that much either. This is probably my least favorite track.
15. Bo Diddley "Love Her Madly"-3/5-This is less-than-spectacular. He makes the song his own, it bares almost no resemblance to the original. Problem is...That's the problem.
16. The Doors "The Cosmic Movie"-5/5-This is essentially a bunch of stray poems and excerpts from Doors song thrown into a juxtaposed mess with a "Five to One" backbeat. Hate to admit it, though. It's kind of interesting.
17. Days of the New "The End"-4/5-It grew on me for sure. It's extremely faithful to the original version, but they could've picked a much better band to do the cover.
GRADE: B
Worth it just for the Burroughs track.......2006-07-01
At the end it blends together with Jim's voice. It's a really bizarre but fascinating track.

Strange Dayz- A great example of how KMK can get down lyrically with a hard hip-hop flavor.

Versatility reigns.......2007-05-07
What a great surprise. You have to listen to the entire CD a few times to really understand what an awesome talent Lewis Taylor is, vocally, songwriting and musically. He reminds you of a bunch of different musicians (Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Steve Miller....) on different tracks until you realize that he isn't copying other greats, he is the real deal. He is in a class of own. He is not easy to label, he is just Lewis Taylor and that's enough. This guy just never caught a break to catch on, but is certainly worthy of that kind of popularity.
I can't imagine any rock n roll or R&B fan being disappointed with this CD.
Seriously good music for grown-ups.......2007-04-13
He's English, he's white and he has recorded one of the best soul albums released by any artist in the last ten years. I could be writing of Amy Winehouse couldn't I? He writes his own music and lyrics. He plays all of the instruments and sings all of the vocals. Some times these multi- talented individuals are too clever for their own good. You listen and you can hear them thinking "God, I'm so good!" Stoned does not suffer from this affliction. As I listen I do not so much think of geek in studio as I do singer on stage with tight and funky band. On different songs Lewis Taylor sounds like Lenny Kravitz (when he sounds like himself), Curtis, Marvin, Prince or Al Green. This is a good thing. He is not merely copying his presumed idols. The vocal styles fit the music perfectly as Taylor moves from soul ballads to his more funky musings. He finishes the record with a lovely Beach Boy-ish Melt Away.
This is a terrific recording by an immensely talented artist. I read a review where the writer called this seriously good music for grown-ups. He hit the nail right on the head.

OMFG.......2006-08-15
I just popped in Stoned & Dethroned DVDA from this DualDisc.
WORTH EVERY PENNY
I have heard this album a million times, it's never sounded this good.
I was really on the fence about buying it due to the cost, how many lousy DualDiscs I have heard lately, and the fact that I already owned every JAMC CD.
TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLY worth the money - make sure you have a DVDA setup to listen to it on. Otherwise, probably not worth $13.99
If you don't have a DVDA setup - worth buying one just to listen to this record.
try again.......2006-07-20
I recently picked up the DualDisc version of Automatic by the JAMC, and when I tried to load it into iTunes, it wouldn't extract the audio. I quit iTunes, ejected the disc and tried again. It worked. It was slow, but I was eventually able to load it into iTunes, and subsequently my iPod. Give it another couple tries.
A 5-star album that loses 2 stars for copy protection.......2006-07-20
But, I am very disappointed that the CD-side cannot be read by my computer and, hence, cannot be copied on to the ipod. It saddens me to give this 3 stars. Who on earth is going to steal this? It has been gone for a decade and noone even missed the damn thing but for a few geeks like me (and most people buying it probably owned it already anyhow, like me).
followup: to the reviewer who got 'automatic' to copy onto the ipod, I do not know how that worked for you. For me, the CD was physically unreadable- the hardware itself spun the disc around and around making a terrible noise once every 10 seconds or so. It is a DVD-rom drive so I don't know if that has anything to do with it (but usally the drive reads CDs perfectly well). maybe it is not copy protection but a hardware incompatibility issue; i'll look into it.
Sounds better than ever!! Get the Dual Disc!!.......2006-07-15

Seeps into thy psyche.......2005-11-08
William's mellow album.......2005-09-01
What's interesting here is that, for the first time, we know which Reid brother wrote which song. Since "S&D" contains virtually wall-to-wall softer, more melodic songs, one can expect William to be the greater influence, and, indeed, he wrote more than twice as many songs on the album as did brother Jim. We can also look back and guess which brother wrote which songs on the previous albums. For instance, the grungy "Teenage Lust," ("Hole" on "S&D" sounds basically the same) and the propulsive "Sugar Ray" are classic Jim, whereas the melodic "Catchfire" and "Almost Gold," surely belong to William.
"S&D" really consists of no weak songs, which is pretty amazing since there are seventeen of them. But if I had to name my favorites, they would be the Sonny and Cher like "Sometimes Always" (with the lovely Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star), "Between Us," "She," "These Days," and the effervescent "Girlfriend."
"Stoned and Dethroned" may be a departure from the typical JMC sound (more William than Jim), but it's certainly a welcome and successful one.
Depends on your mood.......2005-08-20
Running with that analogy, this album falls into the pot-smoking portion of the band's catalog, more in the spirit of Darklands than of Automatic or some of their 80's efforts. I found this album fantastic, a continuous stream of mellow acoustic songs each of which are winners. The album had a minor radio hit with the duet "Sometimes Always" - that said, it is probably one of the most under-appreciated albums of the 90's given how good it is from top to bottom. "Artistic" is the word that comes to mind to describe the lush melodies on rueful lyrics that permeate this album.
The best album nobody ever listened to.......2004-10-30
The whole album is fantastic, all the way through, and I am particular to tracks 16 & 17. The music has it's own identity, but it is perhaps most derivative of the earlier, but not earliest, rolling stones. Early 70's stones, where they had settled into an identity and played stripped down rock and roll. But this record has a more soulful and spiritual bent which shows a melancholy maturity and reflects a life-experience that transcends anything the stones ever did. God Help Me and You've Been a Friend are prime examples.
A plug for Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star on track 3. She steals the show, and is an appropriate addition to the album, as she stands, in this writers opinion, as another grossly underheard artist. And the guitar playing on this album...listen to the end of Till it Shines, or Feeling Lucky...and it should speak for itself.
A great mellow album!.......2004-04-15

If you happen to own the "Hackers" soundtrack, the Original Bedroom Rockers track is from this CD. Give it a listen -- or about 2,000 listens. You'll be able to. Very easily. Downbeat, mellow, slow and hypnotic electronica-flavored acid jazz that I have neer seen a woman listen to twice without beginning to undress by the second track.
That, I believe, should give you some small insight to the power of this CD.

Mostly funny, but some schlock as well........2005-02-06
The first 16 selections on this CD are the best; you get completely gonzo stuff like "Roland The Roadie And Gertrude The Groupie," "Marie Lavauk" and their biggest seller, "Cover Of The 'Rolling Stone'" ("Wanna buy 5 copies for my mother!") cheek-to-jowl with more conventional but still well-done songs like "Sylvia's Mother" (which stays just on the edge of soap opera without actually falling in), "The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan" (later a hit for Marianne Faithfull), "The Wonderful Soupstone" and "Carry Me, Carrie." Those are all terrific. What's not so terrific are later Hook/Silverstein match-ups like "I Don't Want To Be Alone Tonight," "More Like The Movies" and "Pleasure And Pain," where big-time mawkishness sets in and the lewd campiness that was the band's strength is purged and flattened completely. All it really means, though, was that even the mighty were/are allowed to stumble now and again and if you've ever yearned for a time tunnel back to a period where you could be culturally incorrect and get away with it (cf. "Freakin' At The Freaker's Ball"), this may well be what you're looking for.
