While Sam Cooke certainly made beautiful music in the pop realm, his greatest sides were those made with the Soul Stirrers. When Cooke joined the group in 1950 at the age of 19, he'd already spent 4 years singing with the Highway Q.C.'s. The Soul Stirrers lead singer, R.H. Harris, who quit just before Cooke's arrival, had spent almost 25 years molding the group into gospel stardom through an innovative use of two lead singers matched with utmost energy and sophistication. Cooke initially sang in a style similar to Harris's, but soon took off into his own unearthly realm, writing spine-tingling songs like "Nearer to Thee," "Mean Old World," and the brilliant "Touch the Hem of His Garment," then singing them in his soaring, inimitable style with perfect control of phrasing and enunciation. you do not need to be religious or a gospel fan to enjoy this great music. this is not the commercial pop/blues of sam cooke's later solo career, which is still good music. this is his roots, and in my opinion his greatest work by far.

You don't get a deserved reputation for singing with passion, fire, and energy as Sam Cooke did without having some proving ground, some mode of training for developing talent that, once discovered, catapulted him to the forefront of the emerging American R&B music scene. No matter what kind of song Sam would sing later, whether "Chain Gang," "You Send Me," or "Cupid," the raw, unbridled strength of his vocals had their beginnings first in church, and then recording and touring with the Soul Stirrers, one of the top gospel groups of the time.

Sam Cooke joined when he was only 19 years old, but he quickly became the co-lead singer, following the group's long-standing format of having two co-lead vocalists. But after a while, Sam's voice so overshadowed the others that the group eventually became known as Sam Cooke and The Soul Stirrers.

This collection of some of the Soul Stirrers' greatest hits with Cooke as a vocalist features some of his best recorded gospel performances. Songs like "Be With me Jesus," "I'm so Glad Trouble Don't Last Always," "That's Heaven To Me," and the classic, timeless "Touch The Hem of His Garment" brim over with the richness and power that was Sam Cooke's voice. Another great talent lost too soon, but also another talent that we were fortunate to have for at least a little while.

If you love Sam Cooke or traditional gospel music, this CD is a must for your collection.

It is hard to believe that this music is over 50 years old. It sounds as if had been recorded yesterday. Each song is splendid. For those who only know Cooke's non-gospel recordings, check this out. Believe me, these are even better than his pop, rock and soul recordings. In fact, they are much better. These songs go right down to the marrow.I've never heard a better gospel singer. My favorites are "Nearer To Thee," and "Touch The Hem of His Garmet," which the multi-talented Cooke wrote. His voice was from heaven. It will touch your soul.

While the pop classics by the grit-and-honey singer reached a broader audience, Sam Cooke's formative music with the Soul Stirrers, recorded for the Specialty label, ranks with both his best and gospel's best. Only 19 when he was recruited in 1950 to replace the group's venerable R.H. Harris, Cooke developed the signature style he would carry into the popular arena while he was still singing church music. Disc 1 shows the raw passion of a vocalist who has yet to apply the polish for which he would become known. By disc 2, Cooke is no longer tentative in replacing a legend but asserting an irrepressible musical identity. Disc 3 demonstrates his growth as both a vocal master and an ambitious songwriter--most famously on "Touch the Hem of His Garment"--while documenting his transition as a solo artist into the secular arena. Among the revelations of the set's 83 tracks, the stripped-down arrangements on the alternate takes of "Come and Go to That Land" anticipate the rise of "sacred steel," while the vocal call-and-response over the organ bedrock of "All Right Now" is as rapturous as gospel gets. Sam's best singing is right here. In fact, there's a purity of tone and
spirit in this music that transcends almost all other recorded singing.
Mahalia, Aretha, Ray, Van, Ella, Elvis, Frank...immortals all, but I know of nothing in their canons that can match the combination of tone, timing, phrasing, and joy that Sam delivered with the aptly-named Soul Stirrers.
This music carried me through some of the roughest days of my life, always reminding me that love is omnipresent. Many a time I've cried listening to Jesus Gave Me Water, That's Heaven To Me (does it get sweeter than this?), and other sublime tracks by the Soul Stirrers, and ended up feeling thoroughly cleansed. There are also some exceptionally funky jams created by the vocal interplay of these four insanely talented singers that will make you dance and smile just as long as you'd like.
Sam and the Soul Stirrers made some of the very finest music I have ever heard. There is clearly some sort of God or Spirit in our world; no man could make sounds this moving without some help from a deeper realm.

These CDs are the best. They include all of Sam cookes' recordings and some as he was recording in the studio. It is a treat to heard him talk and to listen to some songs that were recorded live. The last song on the third CD is the something to hear. I love this collection.

You could see how Sam Cooke became a major star in music and the inventor of soul music (Ray Charles also gets props for that). You'll be listening to a song and then you hear this explosive voice that takes the music to the heavens Where it was intended to go. Not only was he the greatest Soul singer, He was definetly one of the top 5 gospel singers of all time. To put it simple. SAM COOKE ROCKS!!!!
