R. Kelly's third album indicates that he's got the range and the staying power of an R&B great. More importantly, it's the album where the libidinous stage persona of R. and his creator Robert finally come together, offering a glimpse of the man behind the libido. Kelly plays almost every instrument on the 16 tracks himself, delivering subtle variations of his laid-back rhythm and gently pulsing bass with lush walls of sound constructed from synthesized strings, keyboards and marimbas. At first listen, the melodies seem lazy and indistinct, but the hooks are sly and insidious, and they work their way into your subconscious. Kelly's voice is what keeps you coming back until they register. A sweet and supple instrument, it caresses the curves in the arrangements, stretching from a throaty whisper to an croon to a magnificent soaring wail. He's also made strides beyond the more misogynous impulses of the earlier records. Predecessors from Marvin Gaye to Prince have believed that there's nothing more spiritual than really great sex, and R. Kelly is makeout music that ranks with the very best. --Jim DeRogatis

R. Kelly's rep could be considered controversial at best, but that's not to say the man who does for raunch what Beyoncé does for backsides (that is, caused the masses to arrive at a more multidimensional consideration) is not a fascinating artist. On Double Up, arguably his most sex-crazed, diabolically sleazy CD to date, Kelly grunts like a monkey, envisions a hot and heavy interplanetary romp, and indulges in NC-17-rated rhymes. Stylistically, the self-described king of R&B kicks up a hip-hoppy storm, spitting rapid-fire rhymes and tossing the 'n' word around too freely. But then there's the saving grace: that voice. Throughout a couple of inspirational numbers and collaborations with friends such as Usher ("Same Girl") and Nelly ("Tryin' to Get a Number"), Kelly does what he did so capably on the megahit "I Believe I Can Fly": he reaches even reluctant listeners with deep-seated sincerity. Even when he doesn't, he still knows how to capture catchy--first single "I'm a Flirt," for example, locks it up with a whisper and a wink. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description

I wish R. Kelly would shut up!.......2007-07-30
There are way too many guest appearances here. (Twelve, if you want to get technical.) And I believe this is because R. Kelly was fresh out of ideas. I think that he did all this doubling up to swagger jack. You'll see what I mean after hearing "Tryin' To Get A Number" with Nelly. Mr. Kelly is trying to sound exactly like him... imitating him. He even kinda sounds like Usher on "Same Girl." But this is the least of R. Kelly's problems. The songs on here, especially the upbeat tracks, are so simple that they are almost monotone! Seriously, some of these tracks only use two notes on a musical scale. It's like he's trying to rap or something. The songs drag on to the point where it is unbearable. His melodies lack structure or a clear direction, which is really terrible if he wants to make his album almost 80 minutes long. His lyrics are absolutely bogus, seriously imitating monkey sounds, mentioning Charmin toilet paper... and this album has enough terrible metaphors to make and English teacher faint. His subject matter is extremely limited and quite disgusting. This is the biggest waste of money and I'm quite disappointed in myself. Even the two songs I initially liked have become played out and I will never listen to this again. I can't think of anything positive to say for this album. Please heed my warning and do not buy this.

For years, a not-insignificant contingent of Destiny's Child fans have been claiming that Kelly Rowland, not Beyoncé, was the diva to watch in that group--the one whose crystalline vocal gifts got piggybacked on. With that kind of underdog love, Kelly could have coasted in her solo career, cranking out batches of classy ballads and midtempo joints designed mostly to keep the faithful convinced they were right. Ms. Kelly, though, has some points to prove, foremost among them that this songbird can rock: "I told y'all I was gonna bump like thee-es," she boasts alongside Eve on the red-hot banger of a first single that is "Like This." Later, she sidles up to Snoop Dogg in the slinkiest way possible on "Ghetto," busts out the funk on "Work," and scissor-kicks expectations about the limits of her clean voice on "Comeback." As the disc rolls on, Rowland's friskiness mellows--"The Show," with Tank, puts the focus on the near-forgotten art of harmonizing and "Still in Love with My Ex" makes a sweet study of romantic regret. The closing track, a ballad a country crooner could have had a good time with, nevertheless gets to the bottom of why this disc is so worth shelling out for: The love Rowland sings about on "This Is Love" is "like a diamond in the sand"; so, we come to realize, is she. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description

Perhaps R. Kelly's brushes with the law have caused him to turn down his love light, since his seventh album Chocolate Factory takes scrupulous pains to show an idealized high-minded face of love, eschewing his usual steamy cocktail of raunchy lust and replacing it with a sweet, winsome romanticism. "I'll Never Leave," is a wistful valentine, while "The Heart of a Woman," is embarrassingly empathetic to the plight of the feminine kind and is hardly the kind of fare that one expects from Marvin Gaye's heir apparent. Despite his real life racy escapades, Kelly is at his best musically when he's an unrepentant bad boy but he doesn't even show any grit until "Been Around the World," his confessional duet with a rasping Ja Rule, the fretful bluesy "You Made Me Love You," and "Ignition," a paean to parking. Despite "Ignition"'s first line, "Girl, please let me stick my key in your ignition, babe" it's rather tame by the standards Kelly has set on his earlier discs. "Chocolate Factory" also includes 6 bonus tracks from Loveland the album that was slated for a 2002 release, but was ostensibly shelved after it was rampantly bootlegged on the Internet. Despite the disc's soft focus, Kelly is at the height of his vocal powers, and once he weans himself from the gooey sentimentality and returns to his persona of a smooth seductive operator he'll once again be an artist to be reckoned with. --Jaan UhelszkiCustomer Reviews:

Amazon.com
The first single off of R. Kelly's TP-2.com, "I Wish," might be a moving memorial to a dead friend, but the main theme on his latest CD is sex. The first tip-off that Kelly has left the spirit world to concentrate on nookie is the CD title, which refers back to his mid-'90s smash 12 Play. Back then, Kelly made his name with a take-no-prisoners (if somewhat obvious) sensuality. Yet now this loveman sounds conflicted and ill at ease. He might offer to "Strip for You," he might lay claim for a girl who's "Like a Real Freak," he might even promise his lady "The Greatest Sex," but his manner is so tentative and so self-reflective it makes one wonder how hot the loving could really be. Kelly has been expanding his creative repertoire over the course of his past two CDs, and his latest motif is a sort of stream-of-consciousness style that constantly returns to the main thrust of the argument: a circular groove. At its best (the triumphant "I Wish"), this style is emotional and emphatic. At its worst, or when Kelly insists on using it over and over, it's the musical equivalent of having a drunk poke you in the arm repeatedly to make his point. On "Fiesta," Kelly literally builds a song out of this annoying rhythmic tic, and it's like he's on a treadmill, never getting anywhere. TP-2.com is raw and romantic, but it becomes too redundant to truly sustain the passion. --Amy LindenAlbum Details

Modern Marvin Gaye.......2007-02-01
12 Play Part 2.......2006-03-07
It all starts with "Strip For You", a laid-back sexy song that suits R. Kelly perfect. "R&B Thug" is slicker and more uptempo, "The Greatest Sex" is fullfilling the album concept, but it's not among the better songs of this album. "I Don't Mean It" and "Just Like That" are both slow jams, the first one however is more romantic though. "Just Like A Freak" is another sex song, If you hadn't understood that? but this song feautures rap and latin influenced music and it's unique to this album. "Fiesta" is also latin-influenced and on this album version Jay-Z doesn't appear. "Don't You Say No" yet another so-so slow jam.
"One Me" is also a slow jam, I think this is one of the better. "I Wish" is defenitely the best, but ironically it's not about sex at all, but about friends that died. A hit single and a very touching mid tempo song when R. Kelly shows his best side. "A Woman's Threat" is a midtempo, and also single released I think. "I Decided" continues the sexy trend. "I Mean (I Don't Mean It)" is a midtempo where he perform backround lyrics for himself. "All I Really Want" is great soul, but it sounds more like a song made for Tyrese then the usual R. Kelly song. "Feeling On Ya Booty" is surprisingly good, but dirty. The last song "Storm Is Over" is the second best, only after "I Wish" and neither a sex song, it reminds me of "I Believe I Can Fly", a ballad that also feautures gospel choirs.
So, what's the verdict?. A good album defenitely, You knew the dilemma already before you bouht it, so don't expect this to be a "R Kelly" or "R" but surprisingly enough it features a few non sex single and they are actually some of the best on the entire album. It may feature a few too many songs (17 if we count the remix of "I Wish" and some are not as good as others, but on the other hand the high points lift this album to great votes. Not one of his best, but not too far behind. If You're New start with the eponymous "R. Kelly" or "R".

A double disc may seem indulgent after barely a decade in the biz, but after meandering through the commercial minefields of innocent fun (1992's Born into the '90s), pure raunch (1993's 12 Play), and pop crossover (1995's R. Kelly), Kelly has come close to the perfect mix--and if it takes two discs to do so, why not? There are still moments of indulgence (the forced theatrics of "The Opera"), and the occasional venture into mediocrity ("Did You Ever Think?"), but the sheer funk of tracks like "Home Alone" (a head-bobber featuring Keith Murray) and "Dollar Bill" (featuring--surprise!--Foxy Brown) allows you to overlook such cracks in the formula. Other bit players in this star vehicle include Cam'Ron, Noreaga, Jay-Z, Nas, and (yes) Celine Dion. --Rebecca WallworkCustomer Reviews:

Disc 1
1. Home Alone (ft. Keith Murray) - 8/10
Very popular in the radio during the late 90's, this is a mid-stellar single showcasing Kelly's ability to share the spotlight with a rapper and producing a decent party jam.
2. Spending Money - 7/10
Equal to 'Money Makes The World Go Round' on Disc 2, this song displays Kelly's exploits on women desiring money.
3. If I'm Wit You - 7/10
Very calm song with repeated lyrics from 'Don't Put Me Out'. Nontheless, you can listen to the first verse and skip.
4. Half On A Baby - 10/10
This is Disc 1's best single. The lyrics are very deep, imaginative and soulful.
5. When A Women's Fed Up - 8/10

Just another day at the office..........2007-06-10
The most difficult task a music lover and follower of R&B/Hip-Hop has when listening to the latest and greatest R.Kelly album is identifying which one of his multiple personalities will be the center of focus for his creative genius.
All of them have provided us with #1 hits and albums and all of them offer enough material to fill a double-disc project and then some.
In case you have a hard time remembering:
R.Kelly: The "bread-and-butter". He will bump and grind you and make you want to wax your Jeep!
The R: Smooth and silky. Like an assembly line at a Chocolate Factory.
Robert Kelly: The more human side. Spiritual, inspirational and uplifting.
The Weatherman: Put on your dancing shoes and "step to the left--step to the right".
Kellz: Hip-Hop with a vengeance! A fusion of smooth and calculated R-and-B with a shot of hip-hop.
His latest effort at making our Jeep speakers burst and our sexual energy peak is Double Up; where the personality "Kellz" runs wild. The artist who invented sing-rapping gives us flow and energy that some artists who classify themselves as rappers can rarely do. The flow between whatever catchy and infectious chorus the R in R&B has decided to infect our minds with is so calculated, so smooth and so rhythmic that on some phrases he doesn't even bother rhyming or connecting the phrases! But at that point, who cares?! R.Kelly's latest literally "has you at hello".
The system that this album works off of has become a staple for the 2000's era of R.Kelly releases. Why create an album based on each personality when you can include ALL of R.Kelly's platinum selling personas at different points in the album? Once he does this, all other R&B singers might as well pack their bags.
R.Kelly brings us lustful and dripping sexual metaphors that which can only come from a man who calls his unit a " giant rocket full of fuel" are found in cuts like Sex Planet, The Zoo and Sweet Tooth. They leave your leg shaking and eyes rolled back for the complete four to five minutes.
Kellz unleashes beasts of radio and windows-down-anthems like Im'a Flirt (Remix), Double Up, Rollin' and Hook It Up. Not only can these be found at your local club but they can also be found endlessly echoing in your head days after your first listen.
Somewhere in the midst of this musical orgasm you find yourself in the Caribbean dancing on the beach with cuts like Freaky in the Club and I Like Love. The Weatherman's taste for the international is only complimented by his taste for a Pina Colada!
The R in R&B's lyrical operas such as Best Friend, Same Girl and Real Talk are in a genre of their own. No one in modern music has been able to construct, compose, story-tell and touch audiences like R.Kelly's sinful and guilty pleasure soap opera music.
After sleeping off the club, sex and fights with his girlfriend we find Robert Kelly serenading us about the birth of his child in Having a Baby. Soon after that we are all driven to Rise Up out of the terrible Virginia Tech tragedy like only R.Kelly inspirational music can make us do.
A song that currently has no real R.Kelly personality tagged to it and is by far the most standout track is Rockstar. This monster of a song featuring Ludacris, Kid Rock and Kellz himself leaves your jaw somewhere by your all-white Air Forice Ones. The haunting electric guitar beat laced with Kellz sing-rapping and Luda's taste for the sexually outrageous is enough. But couple that with Kid Rock's 80's power ballad verse and ubiquitous screaming and you have somewhere R&B and Hip-Hop has NEVER gone before...and would be inclined to say it should go more often.
Double Up is new, fresh, innovative, constructive, risky, calculated and a top seller.
But that's just what R.Kelly does and has done for more than 15 years.
Not What He Used To Be!.......2007-06-03
Nevertheless, I supported him. I remember when Chocolate City was released with the bonus Loveland disc, I was the only person waiting to purchase it and got it for only $7.99. Best purchase I ever made as I still play it continously to this day.
Well, I have said all this to say it's been a long time for Kelly to still be in the game but it is time he realizes that a 40 yr old SHOULD NOT be still singing about being a babby daddy and tryin to get a number. I mean the same girl track, come on - he nor Usher is 15!
I rated this album 1 star because I am not a 13 yr old and two, zeros aren't a choice.
kellz is by far the best in the game of R&B/Hip -Hop...enough said.......2007-06-02
Soon to be a Classic .......2007-06-02
Yes, the lyrics weren't deep. But, neither are lyrics for most of the urban stuff coming out these days. So to blame it on just R. Kelly isn't fair. You also have the fans who dictate what's going to fly.
All that said, I like the album from a music standpoint. The production is nice. Most of the rap cameos (minus Nelly) work. The "Zoo" song featuring animal noises was silly toward the end. But, there's also "Rise Up". It's about Virginia Tech, but I'm sure Kelly had that song in the works prior. It's something you can listen to for any situation. Oh..and there's a bonus song that's good.
Overall,I like the album. I see what other people are saying from BOTH sides. But, R. Kelly is an artist who we all should know by now what we're getting into when we purchase an album. There's no real surprises.
It's not supposed to be an R&B album, folks!.......2007-06-02

mixed review.......2007-06-08
The portions of the duet ballads where she sang were great and those portions that were sung by other people were subpar. For example, I LOVE that song "God is not dead" up until the point Joe Ligon sings. Maybe it's my taste but I did not care for his voice or Vanessa Bell Armstrong's. I bought the CD to hear Kelly...not these other vocalists. Their voices were much more old fashion than kelly's. As a listener and fan, I would recommend that Kelly do all the singing herself unless she has the opportunity to work with singers like Whitney, Aretha
or other people of their caliber.

Album Description
R. Kelly has had 26 Top 40 hits, won the Outstanding Achievement Award at the 2001 MOBO Awards, and his anthemic smash 'Ignition Remix' entered the charts at No.1. TP.3 Reloaded features a 5-part musical soap opera entitled "Trapped...In The Closet." In typical daring R. Kelly style he has experimented with the art of storytelling and lyrics to create something very unique. The concept behind the soap on "Trapped...In The Closet" comes from back in the day, when the radio was the only entertainment available. Families would sit round the radio to listen to shows and plays for evening entertainment.Customer Reviews:
