"Fantasy" provides the only real transcendent chapter on this album. Reinterpreting Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" with a percolating dance beat, the single emphasizes everything that makes Mariah Carey great. Her voice swoops, squeals, and careens over the seductive rhythm, while the words capture just the right amount of vulnerability and determination. Unfortunately, the thrill is short-lived, as the multiplatinum singer soon falls back into typical adult-contemporary schlock and pointless vocal gymnastics, particularly on "Melt Away" and the bombastic cover of Journey's "Open Arms." --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary........2007-07-28

When daydream nation came out it was a revolution...sort of. Indeed, SonicYouth had been on the radar of anyone interested in alternative music for a few years. Indeed, while all their early records had moments of greatness, sonically it did not allways gel. The sound was allways murky and the songs somewhat sloppily structured. Here, they manage to come over completely focused in a way that remains refreshing. While some of their previous work has strangely improved over time (quite rare) this remains their definitive recors. It is the one that has the most traditional song structures while till being recognizable as classic Sonic Youth. While more melodic than previously the dissonant guitar sounds are still present. All this makes Daydream Nation such a special work. Overall it has not aged. Also to some degree it is the one record that does also not completely sound as any other SY record since it has a more traditional approach at the same time. Indeed one personal criticism against SY is that , especially recently, all thier records sound the same in some way: this is not the case here. Here you get the original record as well as a second CD with live recordings. While these deluxe editins are sometimes a bore, this is an exceptional package. Apparently there is also a beautiful vinyl version of it available.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful daydream.......2007-07-23

to hear the live daydreaming on record is true beauty. the demo of eric's trip shows just how far the songs travel from idea to finished work.
if i had to recommend one sonic youth album to be part of every true music lover's record-collection this would be it. every aspect of their music comes together perfectly on this one.

still on of the greatest records of all times even 19 years after it's original release. hats of ...

5 out of 5 stars a deluxe edition done right.......2007-07-13

Disc One is the reissued definitive recording of the 1980's.
Disc Two is chocked full of noisey Daydream Nation goodness performed live.

So often reissues are a ripoff. This set delivers the goods and then some.

5 out of 5 stars The best album of 1988...and 2007!.......2007-06-22

The fifth album (more or less) by The Best Rock Band of the Last 25 Years should need no introduction, and indeed if you're interested in buying the deluxe edition of Sonic Youth's "Daydream Nation," I can presume you're probably already a fan. You already know how the album summed up and then changed the course of the underground rock movement of the 80s, how the ample attention of critics, then music fans, then record labels set the stage for the alternative rock revolution of the 90s--oh well whatever Nevermind and yada yada yada. If, however, you haven't already drank the Kool-Aid (and you should!), some brief notes about the "basic" edition...

"Daydream Nation" is still hailed as Sonic Youth's grand masterpiece, and yeah, it still holds up as such (confession: it's my second favorite SY album after Sister), even if it doesn't seem as radical today as it did when it came out. Sure, there are swirling whirlwinds of oddly-(de)tuned guitars and feedback fading in, out and sometimes interrupting the songs, but make no mistake, there are definitely songs to be found here. The openening "Teenage Riot" is, for its galloping drums and lyrical cheekiness (imagining Dinosaur Jr's J. Mascis as president, or so Thurston Moore has said) basically a melodic and even hummable pop song. Even a more "experimental" song like "The Sprawl" has a certain immediacy, with bassist/vocalist Kim Gordon saying straigt out "does f**k you sound simple enough?" Heck, the closing "trilogy" of the album has all the power and intensity familiar to any classic rock fans, only with a live-wire buzzing and skree that comes from playing in one of Glenn Branca's guitar-army ensembles. Really, it's not so radical after all (for a taste of something far weirder, check out Twin Infinitives, which was released around the same time as DN by Royal Trux, a New York band friendly with Sonic Youth).

For us fan(atic)s, the real treat here is the second disc of this set, which features live versions of all the album's tracks, culled from the band's original tour supporting the album, albeit in a different order (SY has recently announced it will play "Daydream Nation" as part of a special show, presumably in the album's running order). These tracks, mostly of excellent sound quality, are shorter but sharper than the album versions. "Total Trash" is done as an instrumental (I could be wrong, but they seem to be quoting the early Pink Floyd's instrumental "Interstellar Overdrive" in one spot), preceded by another instrumental, "Totally Trashed," which toys around with electronics a bit. Mostly these are no-holds-barred performances that clearly draw on the band's love of hardcore punk and NYC No Wave (DNA, Teenage Jesus & the Jerks). I don't know how a non-fan would react, but for yours truly it's pure Sonic bliss.

Another great bonus on disc two is the inclusion of four cover songs, three of which were taken from now hard-to-find tribute albums (this was before that concept got beaten to death): "Within You Without You" (The Beatles), "Computer Age" (Neil Young) and "Electricity" (Captain Beefheart). There's also a version of Mudhoney's "Touch Me I'm Sick," with demented vocals from Kim, taken from a split 7" (as in vinyl, kids) that had the other band doing SY's "Halloween" on the reverse (alas, that version isn't included here). The Beatles cover in particular shows how the band could translate their sound into completely different realms--the original, of course, was played mostly with sitars.

Add all that to a package that includes ultra-Kool, and rare, pictures and an extensive essay by longtime SY friend Byron Coley, and you have a true Sonic feast. Like they did with the Goo Deluxe Edition and the Dirty (Deluxe Edition), Sonic Youth rewards fans and newcomers alike almost to the bursting point. Now let's hope they burn down the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame before too long...

Amazon.com essential recording

The essential New York rock band of the post-punk era, Sonic Youth care as much about the quasi-symphonic, microtonal art-guitar music of composers like Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca as they do about the rock-song form, and with Daydream Nation, they struck their greatest balance between the two. The songs hover gorgeously for extended lengths, letting guitarists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo intertwine fragile tonalities as carefully as it's possible to do at wall-shaking volume, while Moore and bassist Kim Gordon's untutored voices disaffectedly intone words that flirt with pop stupidity, high-art eloquence, and urban cool. When they bear down and rock, they do it with a blurry intensity that finds gorgeousness at the heart of discord. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars Takes time but worth the wait.......2007-07-05

Yeh this album may take a while to get into for some but stick with it, it is well worth the wait. For me though I have to say teenage riot just hooked me from the off great track with a beautiful slow build up. This album doesnt realy hit you straight off but rather gets you by supprise. Realy dont know how I can describe this album as you can hear so many influences coming through from Black Flag to the Velvet Underground.

Buy this and give it a listen, then listen again. It will grow on you.

5 out of 5 stars very good for the avant garde accepting folks.......2007-06-14

sonic youth is not for everyone.they have a raw style which is anything but pretty and radio-freindly.with that said they're also one of the most inventive bands to come along in quite some time because of the risks they've taken and how they approach song composition.if you can stand a little noise from a band who are trying to sound beautiful in a much different way than most, give em a try and you shouldn't be dissapointed!

5 out of 5 stars Loved It.......2007-04-17

I bought Daydream Nation after hearing the opening track (Teenage Riot) on the radio, I oynly really bought the album for that song, but as I soon found out the album is packed to the rim with songs that are just as good if not better then Teenage Riot. As many grunge albums are this is a grower, and I can see how many people would not like this album, but for me I loved this. It easily enters my Top 10 albums.

I believe that Sonic Youth are one of the most underated bands in the history of music and had they continued with this form (ie actually having a song structure) they could have been credited with starting Grunge instead of Nirvana who are incorrectly described as inventing grunge.

However f you enjoy Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Replacements or anything grunge I advise you give this album a go.

5 out of 5 stars Sonic Youth's Masterpiece: Daydream Nation.......2007-04-02

This is INCREDIBLE work to say the least. An '80s Alterna-"indie"-Rock staple. Sonic Youth is MUCH MORE than your average experimental noise underground (at the time) Rock 'n' Roll band. Daydream Nation VAULTED Sonic Youth: Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo, & Steve Shelley to a NEW level of recognition as pioneers of Rock n Roll past and original trailblazers in a dawn of a new beginning. Basically the album that made Sonic Youth famous, while still being in N.Y.s indie music scene.
Originally released in 1988, Daydream Nation is Sonic Youth's sixth studio release, containing an album's worth of their coolest breezy, energetic songs and stretching Rock to far unreachable heights.
S.Y. brought their sound into the mainstream, influencing hundreds of bands including Nirvana. My Favorite songs on Daydream Nation: Opener "Teen Age Riot" - "Silver Rocket" - "The Sprawl" - 'Cross the Breeze" - "Hey Joni" - "Candle" -contains a reference to "Tonight's The Night"(1975) by Neil Young w/ line: "It's safe to say, Candle, TONIGHT'S the DAY -Candle, It's alright now candle, the wind's away-Candle. Never thought I'd see a dark sky falling....."
I sometimes wonder in what state "Alternative" music would be in without Sonic Youth. They changed and shifted the landscape's sound into a more radical, apocalyptic state. And who would of thought they would go on so many years, as of now 25+ & 18(+)-(there are a lot of side projects); albums or so, some are better than others and I own all studio albums.
In 1990 Sonic Youth released Goo (their 7th) their first for major-label DGC, to reach a wider more appreciative audience. And in 1991 Nirvana followed going to major label DGC and igniting the "grunge" movement in the mainstream. But, believe me Daydream Nation (NOT Goo) has GAINED my attention as well as thousands(+) more! One SERIOUS Record.
Another one of my ALL TIME favorites. It is also cited as making a vast array of "greatest albums of all time" lists(quoted from double album re-issue including live 2nd disc).
To me, this is the best 80s album I have ever heard and Sonic Youth's absolute Best.

4 out of 5 stars She's always been the "Total Package".......2007-06-22

From the first time my ears heard her voice...i was in love with this talented diva like, American Musical Treasure. This is truly one of if not the best Mariah Carey Albums of all. I am a firm believer in the notion that some songs or artists should NOT be re-recorded...however Mariah does an excellant job of owning, even if only for this album, "Open Arms"...of course the original being from Steve Perry and Journey. There's Something about Mariah and the lyrics "Lying Beside Me"..."one Sweet Day" is a tear jerker for anyone who has ever had to say good~bye to a loved one...great song. "Always be My Baby" is a cute song for the lover in you..."Fantasy" is for the dancefloor with it's sample of "Genius Of Love" from the Tom Tom Club. Another personal fav' is "Melt Away". This is a beautiful woman "working it" with a voice that is another reason to believe in GOD because this voice could have only come from Heaven.

5 out of 5 stars This is Mariah on point. Definitely her best album........2007-03-31

It has some pop, some R&B and even some dance music. From start to finish I can seriously listen to this CD. While Long Ago is the weakest track here, it doesn't make for a bad song. It just sounds a bit outdated.

My favorites are:

Open Arms
I Am Free
Fantasy
When I Saw You
and
Daydream Interlude.

Don't miss out on Mariah's best album, right behind it? Butterfly. Buy it today!! In fact, maybe you should buy two and share with a friend. ^_^

5 out of 5 stars It's Just A Sweet Fantasy.......2007-02-26

This is one of Mariah's best albums, no matter what other people may say. It's either Daydream, Music Box, or Butterfly in my opinion. Here's the list of the songs
Fantasy - Great, but I love the Bad Boy Mix of it better
Underneath The Stars - Love this song. It's like a stepper's cut/slow jam. Perfect song for those summer nights.
One Sweet Day - You gotta love the colaboration with Boyz 2 Men. It's a sad song, but I love it
Open Arms - The Journey cover. Love Mariah's version - it's more of an R&B ballad
Always Be My Baby - Love it, and always had.
I Am Free - It's okay. Not the best song on the album
When I Saw You - Great song! Another ballad with great lyrics
Long Ago - The hip-hop jam. It's a nice song
Melt Away - Love this song. Another great ballad - it's one of those rainy day songs
Forever - More like a doo-wop song. Great!!
Daydream Interlude (Fantasy Sweet Dub Mix) - Love it, even though it's a shorter version of the Fantasy Sweet Dub Mix. The full mix is 8 minutes long and way better than the edited version.
Looking In - Love the song. Anyone can relate to it - the final ballad from the CD.
Overall, if you love Mariah's ballads, you'll love this CD

Joseph Arthur's fifth album, and the first for his own new label, is quite likely his best to date. Stripped-down throughout and achingly lovely, it shows that Arthur's far more than the smart folk's one-man jam band. He's a rad songwriter with more than one setting on his blender, an often-gorgeous singer who can go low and high with equal rewards. It's hard for some of Arthur's trustafarian trappings to not rankle, from the repeated chant of "be here now" at the close of the gorgeous, Eels-ish opener "Too Much to Hide" to the ridiculous Jerry-Garcia-underwater guitar playing on "Slide Away." But those moments are few and far between. If you need one song to convince you that Arthur's a major talent, make it the Neil Young-y bad-dream song "Black Lexus." It's hard to not see Nuclear Daydream as a blessed distillation of Arthur's talents. Huzzah. --Mike McGonigal

4 out of 5 stars one song .......2007-05-14

I bought this because there is one song on it that I heard on National Public Radio that haunted me and I keep playing over and over; Nuclear Daydream. It's beautiful and just speaks to me somehow, so when I stop looping that one over and over and get to the rest of them; then I'll know what else Joseph has to say...but for now, it's all about the title track which is just stunning, at least for me. Beautiful vocal and acoustic guitar, simple.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-06

Listened to this while driving to work through all kinds of times -- seems to fit in so many moods. Perfect, soothing and energizing. Excellent life sound track. Track 2 and 6 --- Stand outs.

5 out of 5 stars Just a Pleasure.......2007-04-21

Saw Joseph Arthur on TV one night and decided to get the CD. WOW! It is absolutely a pleasure. Like to play it while I do paperwork or as background music when a few friends are over. I realize this is not a "profound" review; I just wanted to weigh in and say this is a melodic, soft, beautiful CD. Very, very enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars One of those CDs that grow on you with every listen..........2007-01-26

I'm listening to this CD now and was compelled to write a review. In my humble opinion, there isn't a bad song on the entire disc. Some songs on the disc have a "dreamy" feel to it. Others are somewhat folky, while some fall more into the pop category. They all play off of each other brilliantly, which lends to a great CD from beginning to end.

I'm really quite surprised that he isn't more widely known. I've introduced his music to many people, some who are quite the music hounds and they still haven't heard of him. Hopefully this CD will open some doors for Mr. Arthur.

5 out of 5 stars Love Joseph Arthur.......2007-01-15

Killer record! Such a talent...songwriting, vocals, and playing all the instruments. Why isn't Joseph Arthur famous? Not for lack of passion or artistry. You owe it to yourself to check him out.

5 out of 5 stars Very relaxing, bright music selection.......2007-06-29

I was not disappointed when I played this CD for the first time. The music is really compatible with relaxing, daydreaming and drawing. My kids enjoy listening to it and I do to.

5 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this CD!.......1999-03-20

My seven year old is quickly progressing at piano and is playing simple pieces of Bach. She had previously only appreciated Bach (with a Bach children's tape) but now is true to Mozart. Plays every morning on our way to school--what a way to start the day!

5 out of 5 stars This music sets the mood........1998-11-28

I play this music for my art classes. I teach Kindergarten through 6th grade art at an elementary school in Connecticut. All classes respond to this music. It seems to be calming and helps them to focus on their art work. I explain that the music will make them more creative. One third grade boy said "This really works."

The Lovin' Spoonful was the first famous band this critic ever saw in concert, but back then I had no idea that their name came from a song by the great fingerpicking bluesman Mississippi John Hurt. The song "Jug Band Music" spoke to the folkie roots of the band's "good time music," but it was always John Sebastian's songs that set the band apart. "Daydream," with its hint of ragtime, was one of his very best tunes, with "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice" not far behind. "Didn't Want to Have to Do It" suggested that even with the Spoonful, all the times weren't good. But frankly, if this is going to be your only Spoonful collection, go for the anthology of the band's hits. --John Milward

4 out of 5 stars "And the Doctor said Give Metamorpho Jug Band Music..........".......2006-02-09

People. My spirit guides have now transported yours truly to the year 1966! Wow! It's different here! No downsizing, people are appreciated, new and different creative music abounds. The Beatles are changing the music scene. Ahh.The Animals.....The Yardbirds.....The Byrds! Yes. Now that I'm here, I do not want to go back to 2006. Music is overly polished and too technical there. Give me good production with real instruments.
Forgive me people.....Metamorpho can be a chatterbox at times. But, the point is, that this is a review about a wonderful group by the name of Lovin' Spoonful who gave credibility back to America after the British Invasion.
Daydream is a lush, wonderous pop-rock-jug band offering from this incredible 60's group. What type of music is it exactly, you may ask? Well, they stirred up a number of genres with this (with a spoon, of course) and gave us all a beautiful blend of tunes. I hear folk music,Nashville influences, blues and rock mixed with, of all things, a hapsichord. John Sebastian created music with a new and interesting instrument heretofore unknown to the general public.
This music will make you happy, and it accomplishes this in a unique and experimental way. The themes are pretty straight forward. John's love is making him mellow in "Daydream". "There She Is" and "Warm Baby" are about other beauties. "It's Not Time Now" is a rare and interesting song lyrically because it deals so cleverly with disagreement. Not a topic that had been written much about before this. Some of the tunes are sweet or sentimental ie; "Didn't Want to Have to Do It" and "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice." Or straight ahead rockers ie; "Let the Boy Rock and Roll" and "Bald Headed Lena." And then, The Spoonful spoof themselves with the humourous "Jug Band Music".
This album is a rare and exceptional gem for it's time. It would make anyone who travelled back in time (like your Metamorpho) want to stay. The music is infectious, happy, a very good time. It is a rare moment of innocence in rock, before we moved to more curious and psychedelic themes. Before the War in Vietnam really started having dire consequences at home. So, be thankful for The Spoonful. They didn't stress your mind, they were fun to listen to, they were creative and talented musicians, and, most important of all, they were from the good ol' USA. I miss them. And it saddens me that their career was so short. So, I hope you people don't mind if I stay in 1966 awhile longer. LBJ is President, the summer of love is about a year away, and Metamorpho hasn't looked this young in ages! So, do yourselves a favor and get this happy gem. If not, then have your guides take you to meet me in 1966. - Signing off - from 40 years ago - happiness, light, and Love - your own Metamorpho.

5 out of 5 stars A daydream that's exciting!.......2003-09-24

The Spoonful were unique in that no other band in history has been so often credited as initiating a "good time." The band sounds like how they look--a bit cartoonish. But this is neither overly sweet (the band, beyond their humor, were actually diverse and capable musicians) nor brittle (styles vary, including jub band[!] in the mix). Rather, it's well-baked and never grows stale. The extended "Night Owl Jam" cooks! Influential in its day, and comparable in quality to contemporaries such as the Beatles. On this release (which hit #2 on the charts in 1966), "Daydream" and "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice" were top ten hits.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Spoonful.......2002-08-14

Released a mere four months after their debut, the Spoonful's sophomore effort featured almost exclusively original material. [The lone cover is "Bald Headed Lena" featuring Zal on lead vocal and electric gorgle--which is actually Zal gargling!!!] Other than The Best of the Lovin' Spoonful, this was their highest-charting album at No. 10. It's filled with the kind of good time music that the Spoonful were known for. And not just the pair of Top Ten hits: "Daydream" and "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice." There are lovely ballads like "Warm Baby," rockers like "Let the Boy Rock and Roll," the very country-sounding "Butchie's Tune" and the instrumental "Big Noise From Speonk."

The bonus tracks include a couple of tracks from the Do You Believe In Magic sessions: an alternate instrumental version of "Fishin' Blues" in mono and the complete 4:40-version of the instrumental "Night Owl Blues." The other bonus tracks are a demo version of "Didn't Want To Have To Do It" in mono, an alternate instrumental version of "Jug Band Music" and a wonderful demo version of "Daydream."

It's great to have these classic Spoonful albums finally available on CD. The numerous anthologies released over the last three decades never told the entire story of this talented band like these remastered CDs do. Kudos to Bob Irwin at Sundazed Studios--this music has never sounded better. Now, when is Buddha Records going to reissue Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful and Everything Playing? HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars One of the Spoonful's finest early efforts.......2002-08-12

Daydream stands as one of the band's finest early efforts. John, Steve & Zal (what you were expecting John, Paul, George & Ringo?) pulled off an album filled with strong originals and a couple of covers. Daydream, You Didn't Have To Be So Nice and Didn't Want To Have To Do It are all among the best songs that the band wrote and performed. Although not their finest effort, Daydream demonstrated that the band had more than a handful of hit singles in them.

This deluxe reissue finally does the band proud; the booklet is filled with trivia and interviews with band members. The bonus tracks are illuminating as well. The demo of Daydream is particularly interesting as it demonstrated that Sebastian and the band had most of the kinks worked out fairly early. But the melody and performance of the alternate tracks are just different enough to justify their inclusion.

Kudos to BMG for doing an outstanding job and reissuing this great album. The big plus is the fact that this is remastered from the original mastertapes. Most of the Spoonful mastertapes were thought lost or destroyed but have turned up recently. The latest greatest hits reissue by BMG to commenerate the band's induction into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame also sounds great (for the same reason). BMG also did a terrific job on the Harry Nilsson reissues (although we're still waiting for a domestic reissue of some of Harry's finest albums).

Get this fine album and you won't regret it!

With the market for modern angst having been sold short by headline writers and color-coded terror-alert designers, what's a '90s-grunge-rooted rock band to do? In the case of Art Alexakis and Everclear, you bare your soul with a smile. On the evidence here, the melodic '70s pop affectations of his divorce-chronicling Songs from an American Movie, Vol. 1 seem to have permanently seeped into Everclear's sound. But they're considerably beefier than the album's straightforward production, wrapping dry observations about American life in bouncy, driving slices of pop-punk that are as infectious as they are wryly disconcerting. Tracks like the album's first single, "Volvo Driving Soccer Mom," and the spirited "How to Win Friends and Influence People" suggest that pervasive rumors of irony's demise have been overstated--or simply ignored--by a gleeful Alexakis and company. If it's an album that also argues that the band is working from formula, it's one they'd be wise to patent. Enhanced CD features include Web keys to performance footage, home movies, and B-side downloads. --Jerry McCulley

2 out of 5 stars ONE good song. That's it. Everclear's losing it..........2006-08-26

It's a totally guilty pleasure, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE "Volvo Driving Soccer Mom."
It makes me laugh, it makes me sing, it makes me dance.
Play it right before Fountains of Wayne's "Stacy's Mom." It's awesome.

OK fine.

The rest of the album is such a yawn that you begin to wonder what ever happened to Everclear?

Seriously, over the last three albums, they've really only come up with three decent songs..."AM Radio", "Wonderful" and "Volvo..."

Hey, their greatest hits album is terrific...but these last few separate albums are only for the rabid fans who'll like anything they put out...

5 out of 5 stars Why all the bad reviews?.......2006-07-25

I would concider myself a casual listener of Everclear's previous works. This being said; I do not understand the negative reviews ,on Amazon, of this album. This is by far my favorite offering from these cats. If all of their albums sounded like this I would be a huge fan. An awesome album from a pretty good band.

1 out of 5 stars ????.......2006-05-16

I think that this album by EC sucks BIG time!
I have been a fan of these guys since 1995...i have just recently picked up this album, and regret that i ever did. It is so bad, it gave me a headache.....BAD music from a decent band

5 out of 5 stars for the fans.......2004-12-18

if you have ever read the everclear website like i have, or any interviews, you probably would have noticed that Art and the boys believe that they have to grow as artists and continue to improve. Sure, you can make millions keeping the purist fans happy, like the ones that only listen to Sparkle and Fade or World of Noise because they're supposedly so much more raw and purer. But really, as a musician myself, where's the fun in writing the same song over and over without getting better as a writer?

i got this cd shortly after it was released, and little did I know, i was coming out of a relationship (i got dumped the same weekend). the song "Sunshine" I think is a beautiful number. It has similar overdubs like most all the songs have had on any everclear album. There's nothing wrong with adding extra guitars or using synth in any song. What I really noticed on this album, as a huge fan of part 2 of the American Movie duo, it seems to me that Art and the gang learned a lot about themselves as writers. If you liked "American Movie pt 2," "Overwhelming," "When It All Goes Wrong Again", and "Short Blonde Hair," you will definately enjoy this album. Most of the songs are just as cool and personal as those songs are.

the songs that realy stick out to me are "I Want to die a Beautiful Death" and "New York Times" ...there are two acoustic songs. "Chrysanthemum" is a very short, simple song similar to "THe Good Witch of the North" from American Movie pt 2. "Science Fiction" is the second acoustic song, and it is very much one of the greatest songs Everclear has ever done. It's just Art on guitar, with a very simple chord set-up, and some strings sythed.

If you're a pure fan, you will like this, but will insist on criticizing it because it isn't Sparkle and Fade. If you're a real fan, who likes hearing Everclear get more technical and more lyrically sound with every album, you will love this album as much, if not more than i do

3 out of 5 stars Am I Daydreaming?.......2004-12-14

Everclear certainly has progressed over the years; for better or worse. This is Everclear's sixth full length attempt, and it shows. We get an array of slick production, mixed with pop hooks and Alexakis-standard lyrics (which are excellent I might add). Now, if you are a Sparkle and Fade fan or World of Noise fan, there won't be much on this album for you, as this is a catch mix between Vol 1 and So Much for the Afterglow, except maybe Blackjack or Volvo Driving Soccer Mom.
The album starts off with a few catchy rock 'em tunes (Beautiful and Blackjack among those) and then heads off into a more light and winded middle (Chrysanthemum, TV Show, etc.), and finishes of with a few WELL DONE songs (NY Times). The album, however, seems to be building up to this climax or high point, and when it comes time to deliver; it never does. As well, Alexakis' songs do seem redundant and the same from earlier albums (Da da da da-da da da), and my favorite song on the album, 'White Noise' is the hidden track, one minute after the last song on the album.
This album is good, but not great, as Everclear seem to be stuck in a dreary, overproduced whirl that they can't seem to get out of. Alexakis as well seems a little winded, but there are the highlights (TV Show, Blackjack, Science Fiction, White Noise). If you remember the fiery, passionate Everclear that I do from the mid-90's, you probably agree that this is not their best attempt.
If you are getting into Everclear, get Fade or Afterglow, and if you are an Everclear fan, you might like it, you might not, but take it for what it's worth.
