The Very Best of the Drifters

The Very Best of the Drifters

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
A by-the-numbers, chronological collection that hits all the commercial highlights of the Drifters' Golden Era (1959-64)--after the frequently dazzling early records with Clyde McPhatter, but featuring the consummate vocal stylings of Ben E. King, Rudy Lewis, Johnny Moore, and more on 16 memorable hits. Among the pinnacles: "There Goes My Baby," the record whose unsettling, soaring strings launched the soul era; the romantic perfection of "Save the Last Dance for Me," "This Magic Moment," and the contagiously catchy, Latin-bouncing "Sweets for My Sweet;" and the eternally evocative cityscapes of "Up on the Roof," "Under the Boardwalk," and the stark, gritty "On Broadway." Sleepers include the heartrending Bacharach ballad "Please Stay," "I Count the Tears" (ripped off later on the Grass Roots hit "Let's Live for Today"), and "When My Little Girl Is Smiling," on which strings foreshadow the folk-rock movement. An ideal starter kit on these seminal uptown soul pioneers; those seeking further revelations (and there are plenty of them) are referred to Rockin' & Driftin': The Drifters Box. --Ken Barnes

4 out of 5 stars GOOD SONGS AND VALUE.......2007-01-12

this cd has a good sound and variety of their greatest hits. you must be a drifter's fan to enjoy this one.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation but not remastered.......2006-09-20

The sound is excellent but this is not a remastered compilation as some reviewers have claimed. It is an AAD recording made from the original singles masters.

5 out of 5 stars The joy of being 'up on the roof '.......2006-06-12

The Drifters have a number of very good songs, including 'Under the Boardwalk' and 'Broadway'.But they have, and this is the reason I am writing this review one of the greatest of all songs of their time, the incredible 'Upon the Roof'.
This song is one which simply lifts the spirit up in tremendous joy. And it is one of those songs which can be heard over and over again without ever seeming to lose its freshness.

3 out of 5 stars All mono recordings.......2006-04-10

I was quite disappointed with this CD and Ben E King's " The Best
Of" because both are mono records. Except when I heard the songs
back then on the radio, on most LP's- released in the 60's-
all of their recordings were in full stereo. The songs are
great, no doubt, but should I have known this before I would
have chosen other "greatest hits" compilations in stereo.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD!!!!!.......2006-03-20

I'M A BIG DRIFTERS FAN & THIS CD HAS MANY OF MY FAVORITES. THE ONLY ONE MISSING WAS THE BEN E. KING SONG "STAND BY ME". OTHERWISE THIS WAS A GREAT COLLECTION.

5 out of 5 stars Track listing wrong.......2007-06-12

This is more a note than a review: the track listing given above for this album is wrong. CDDB has the correct tracks, matching what's listed on the CD itself. In other words, if you're looking for "Up On the Roof," this CD does not have the song.

5 out of 5 stars Their seventies recordings .......2005-02-21

There were several phases to the careers of the Drifters, but this compilation focuses on their seventies music. In Britain, they were much more successful in the singles charts than they had been in the sixties, when many of their best songs were hits via British cover versions. Their only major sixties hit in Britain was Save the last dance for me, here represented via a re-recording. A re-issue of At the club / Saturday night at the movie made the UK top three in 1972 and was followed into the top ten by a re-issue of Come on over to my place, though none of those songs is reprised here. In America, it was altogether different - they had plenty of major hits there up to 1965, after which they disappeared almost totally from the singles charts.

Following the success of those re-issues, the Drifters secured a British recording contract on the Bell label. Some of the best British songwriters of the time (Tony Macauley, Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway) provided the Drifters with songs stylistically reminiscent of their sixties hits, updated just enough to suit the customers of the seventies.

Kissing in the back row of the movies, Down on the beach, tonight, Like sister and brother, Can I take you home little girl, There goes my first love, Hello happiness, Every night's a Saturday night with you, Love games and You're more than a number in my little red book all made the British charts, most of them reaching the top ten. This compilation also includes several covers including Sweet Caroline (Neil Diamond), Something tells me (Cilla Black), Always something there to remind me (Sandie Shaw), Summer in the city (Lovin' Spoonful).

This is an excellent collection of the Drifters' seventies recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Diamonds in the rough.......2001-09-09

It has been said (and I largely agree) that the early years of the 1960's, the period between the birth of rock and roll and the coming of the Beatles were mediocre times indeed for popular music. This collection proves that there are exceptions to every rule. The group of studio musicians who recorded these gems as the Drifters kept us all going while we unknowingly awaited the "British Invasion", and these classics stand well the test of time. One has to be careful in selecting "Best of" compilations, rest assured these are the original recordings excellently remastered.

          Album Description

One of the best-known and best-loved R&B vocal groups of all-time, The Drifters were blessed with some great lead singers (Clyde McPhatter & Ben E. King), great songwriters (Leiber & Stoller, Pomus & Shuman) and great producers (Phil Spector, Bert Berns). Despite many personnel changes, they scored an amazing 11 top-20 records between 1959 and 1964, and are still on the oldies touring circuit today. This compilation album contains an excellent sampling of the group's pop classics and showcases their smooth harmonies. Features 16 total tracks including 'There Goes My First Love', 'Hello Happiness', 'Summer In The City', 'Like Sister And Brother', 'Like A Movie I've Seen Before' and more. RCA. 2005.
