One-man show Dwele’s debut, Subject, comes correct with neo-soul staples in place. That is to say, there are enough acoustic guitars, stacked harmony vocals, mid-tempo grooves, and sound effects of scratchy vinyl to power an old-school symposium. What the Detroit-bred associate of backpack-rappers Slum Village lacks in depth, he makes up for in sheer summer-ready listenability. Dwele’s genre could be called neo-neo-soul; he seems to owe as much to the foundations laid down by D’Angelo as to obvious idol Stevie Wonder. While lacking the idiosyncrasies of those artists, Dwele manages to slide out of the speakers with enough skills to convince a casual listener to let the languid mood take over. Subject’s title track is its most fully imagined; the needle-on-record gambit that obscures its likable chorus could actually be heard as a conceptual gambit rather than a mere irritation. Elsewhere, Dwele piles on the quiet-storm stuff so masterfully that he sows confusion, while at least seemingly hoping to settle down with one conquest. Vision is hardly up to talent here, but for now, Dwele gets a pass on winning sonics alone. --Rickey Wright

I found out about Dwele on here, never heard of him before. He has a nice soulful voice. I really liked the first couple of tracks on this album. The songs that follow, kinda sound the same. Also, there is that continuous "intro- of SUBJECT" (being the name of the album) carried throughout the tracks and it kind of interupts the flow of it. I prefer full bodied tracks. I can see why he may have incorporated this, but it doesn't really work for me. Although, I do like this album because of selected songs, so it is worth the $9.99 that it is.

3 out of 5 stars Nice debut.......2006-11-10

This album was a nice collection of songs. In this album Dwele shows a lot of potential as a singer and songwriter.

1 out of 5 stars Music For Somnambulists.......2006-11-03

If you are having trouble sleeping I have discovered a cure for you. It is called Dwele and his navel gazing album Subject. The man simply has no musical mojo at all. Not one decent melody. No good funk. Nothing. Every song is slow and sounds the same. 60 minutes and 34 seconds of grinding monotony. He keeps singing about relationships that didn't work out. Maybe thats because you are such a dull pup, my friend. The only song that comes alive a little and stands out from the others at all is track 9, "Money Don't Mean A Thing". But it is an exception and you will probably be asleep by then anyway. This is watered down, sleep inducing coffee house muzak at it's worst. His voice is decent but undistinguished and rarely rises above a wimpy murmur. Does anyone want to buy a Dwele cd? I've got one and it's going cheap.

5 out of 5 stars Nu Soul/R&B Artist ......Dwele.......2006-07-20

I first heard this young brother on the "Tainted" chorus for SV....from there I was hooked. With the sudden disappearance of D'Angelo, Bilal second CD getting leaked and Musiq/Maxwell on hiatus....Dwele bridged the gap real well. Although not strong vocally, lyrically he's on point....and his Spoken Word comes out on Track 12 "Without You". "Subject, A.N.G.E.L,Truth and Hold On, also brighten up the CD. But for true DWele fans/heads there is a Unreleased CD out called "Rize"...it was his Demo CD and has 16 tracks on it...Sandboxautomatic.com

2 out of 5 stars Sleepy Dwele..........2006-07-03

His voice sounds like Musiq Soulchild, I don't think it's a good thing...And it's hard to say his debut is a good one, cuz I didn't "find a way" to go into it...Unfortunately, I heard too many so so tracks...Maybe "Find a Way",the title track are in the right direction, "Money Don't Mean a Thing" is decent, and the only track I really like...

5 out of 5 stars SURF MUSIC DONE RIGHT.......2006-11-01

It's amazing how a group that hadn't played together for over thirty years could put together a CD that is is so tight, melodic, beautiful and down right rockin'! This is just a great CD from beginning to end, if you like surf music, I guarantee you will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with the Vara-Tones!.......2006-06-22

I have a few hundred surf CDs and I would have to say thet this CD is my favorite! My next favorite is their new CD called "Headin' Out". They have the reverb and the composition that just makes all of the songs fantastic. If you like instrumental surf you will love this CD! Buy it you won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars For real !.......2004-12-17

These guys have been playing for a while and it shows. Odd though it may seem to talk about taste, restraint, and intelligence in surf music, they got it, bro. But even more trippy is that from time to time a certain feeling comes through that I thought had gone out of the world. But it hasn't.

Surf consciousness is an order of magnitude above ordinary consciousness. Buy this album. Go get pounded at the Wedge, come home, drain the water out of your head, put it on loud.

5 out of 5 stars bitchin !.......2000-10-20

If you like authentic surf-lover-composed surf (as opposed to novelty, space, or parody, half-jest surf) this izza great CD. These guys know how to set up the surf-reverb big guitar sound, play their instruments, AND compose authentic styled songs that range (in an admittedly limited genre) from driving, major-minor-chord power blowouts, to calm impressionist sunset-on-the-water knockouts. They've struck a clean balance of mood... sheer fun tinged with the surf-"sense of the numinous" mystical awe. If you're only gonna own one surf-genre CD and you're looking for the best one, this is probably it. If you love surf music, what excuse is there for not owning THIS sucker...? It's that good. Really.

5 out of 5 stars Back In Form.......2000-07-17

Bill Epps and Rich Campbell formed The Vara-Tones in 1961. They are one of the original surf groups that were around when the first wave started. They were most active between '63-'65, during the height of the surf-instro craze. Over thirty years later they have returned as revitalized granddads of a genre that has been experiencing tremendous growth and renewed interest from all outlets of the media, including an entirely new and very hip fan base.

Yes, another group has risen out of the ashes to reclaim their territory. This is a wonderful time to be making music. The world has never been more open to new and different sounds. Although this sound is not new and familiar to some, it never really got the recognition and opportunity that its now experiencing. There is no one that deserves the accolades and fame more than the guys that were there in the beginning.

Listen up all you youngsters out there, want to play surf-instro the way it was meant to be played? The Vara-Tones hold a clinic for eager ears that are willing to learn. They have successfully re-ignited their original sound with the help of today's technologies and equipment. The base sound is still there, it just has a little more oomph now (as Phil Dirt says). The original hit "Repeto" (1964), has been given a shot of new life with an upbeat rockin' flavor and a new title, "Repeto 2000." You get the best of both worlds, as the group plays the original as well the updated version. Speaking of the best of both worlds...When many original surf groups reform and make their music combined with today's sound, it comes out sounding so much stronger, with a new fullness and freshness to it. What was once a mere ripple from a recording standpoint, is now a Tsunami headed your way to give you the ride of your life. It all sounds that much better now because of the enhanced and improved sound quality and sonics.

The latin, island flavored tunes are immensely effective. "El Sereno" and "Midnight In Mazatlan", are as picturesque and inviting as the beaches that are envisioned inside your head while listening. Welcome back Vera-Tones. The surf-instro community needs more groups like you to reform and to remind people from whence they came.

Fair warning- if you have a surfboard in hand, and if this music is played loud, the jetty is subject to high surf.

While Switched fit neatly in with the nu-metal milieu, they are a bit left of center, and put a unique stamp on the 11 discrete and heady songs on their major-label debut. Much of the credit goes to Ben Schigel's dramatic vocals, which range easily and well from melodious to irate. While some songs are intense yet melodic rock like a more soaring Nickelback ("Inside"), other aural offerings are more metallic, like the furious "Exterminate," which nearly does Slayer proud. Then there are moments that recall Linkin Park and conjure up dark rock roots, while the intense layers of sound and powerful musicianship on songs like "Darkening Days" and "10 Dead Fingers" add almost a modern-cool progressive musical tinge, also evidenced on the System of a Down-meets-King's X "Anymore." With Subject to Change, this Ohio-bred five-piece proves that Cleveland does indeed rock, and hard, too. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars Awsome!.......2006-04-01

Ben's vocals make this album what it is. I hated the single these guys put out 'Inside' because it sounded like a rejected Creed song, but then a friend said "the rest of the album is so different" and so I picked it up and skipped to track two and was proved wrong. These guys FAR from suck...they are actually one of the coolest bands around. Ben has been described as the Jeckle/Hyde of nu-metal and thats so true. Just listen to 'Anymore'...his voice goes from screams to whispers to singing to whispers and then back to screams. It's brilliant. The best tracks here are the aformentioned 'Anymore', '10 Dead Fingers' and 'Exterminate'...'Wrongside' has a great opening and the closing track 'Darkening Days' gets you ready for their sophmore album...which is out now and I have yet to buy...can't believe that...so I'm going to have to buy it today! Anyways, the entire album is great, except for 'Inside' and it's really weird but theres a hidden track at the end of 'Darkening Days' but it's just 'Inside'...exactly the same track as the opener so it's strange they'd do that. ANyways...buy this, you'll love it. Any fan of Disturbed and bands alike will love this.

5 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the idiots people!!!!!.......2006-03-24

These people on here are saying this band is weak! I don't know what more they could want. This album is comprised of heavy moshing songs to softer but not weak songs you can just sit back and jam to. I'm not saying you should listen to me, all i'm saying is the people on here are not telling you what the cd is really like. There are at least 5 or 6 songs on here that these guys could play at ozzfest and no one would care, they would just go wild. The day I received this cd, I popped it in and was fu**ing blown away! These guys are so talented and it is a shame I haven't heard of them before now. All I'm trying to say is these reviews that are negative do not tell you what this cd is and that is a heavy/melodic great cd to mosh to. Go and buy it if you like heavier nu metal cuz these guys hang with the best of them my friends! Check it out for yourselves.

5 out of 5 stars It didnt waste my time!.......2005-10-18

Yeah the first time I heard Inside i knew right away that the band is great. So i went out and bought the album and all the songs were good especially Dead Fingers and Four Walls. I can't wait till the new album.

1 out of 5 stars Waist of time..........2005-03-10

When I first heard the song inside it got stuck in my head for a long time, and everytime i heard it after that it would get stuck in my head even longer... so i decided to go buy the album.. which was one big mistake.. the vocals are horrid and theres not one good song to get into.. It doesnt even deserve 1 star but i give them one for some how making it to tv..So dont waist your time or money on this band, go for bands like From Zero, Pillar, or Thousand Foot Krutch.

4 out of 5 stars Left of Center is Right.......2004-08-18

I was introduced to Switched by their song "Inside". On their debut cd called Subject To Change they displayed massive riffage and very moody vocals. A lot of people will label them as Nu-Metal, but I don't believe in labels. I feel like I need to back up Switched becuz I believe they're going to be going places in the future. Stand out tracks to me were: "Inside", "Religion", "Anymore", and "Exterminate". But my all time fave out of the 4 is "Exterminate" that sounds rocks hard. Keeping your eye out for Switched in the future and don't close your mind off to newer music.

3 out of 5 stars Albums progressively worse..........2004-10-26

Since high school, I have grown up with Floater, both in my CD player and live on the stage. I must say, although their stage act impresses me every time I've seen it (going on 15 shows), their albums have gotten progressively worse after Angels of the Flesh, Devils of the Bone (my favorite).

"Alter" is no different. I really had been looking forward to this release and really wanted to love it, but I was sadly dissapointed. Although some of the tracks are fun, the majority of the album seems like filler to bridge the gaps between solid tracks with mediocrity. There are two or three tsongs on this CD that seem like they were written in about 20 minutes.

Floater will always remain one of the most unique and enjoyable bands I have ever experienced, but I don't recommend "Alter" to even the most rabid fan.

5 out of 5 stars Floater Evolves Further.......2003-10-16

Floater returns and returns with a vengence with Alter, the band's fifth studio effort. This album shows Floater's devotion to musical progression, rather than the stagnation of a group like Metallica who (don't get me wrong- I dig Metallica) have not written an origianl note in a decade. Not Floater- no way! On this album you'll find influences such as country/honky-tonk in songs like Crusatyr or Hollywood, a power ballad in Safety, something more funky with Come See Everything, some straight rockers with Luddite and Long Gone, or even something a little more dreamy (think a vague Radiohead influence) with 4 Down (A Toast). The album tells stories of change. I believe that it is a story of one man's changes, but others think that there are many characters rather than just one. Bassit/vocalist Rob Wynia flexes his lyrical muscle yet again with this album, thus proving that he is (however in the limelight) at the absolute top of his trade. Dave Amador's guitar is, yet again, inventive and never repetetive. He is truly one of the only guitarists who understands the word 'accompanyment'. Pete Cornett is always cool- with his own unique style on the drums. If you have ever found yourself enjoying Floater (and really, if you hadn't why would you be here- what with as obscure as they are?), this album is a certain must own for you. The band continues to grow in new and exciting directions, and this album is a wonderful example of that. See you at a show (Brickworks- here I come)!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not as good as some prior albums but good either way!.......2004-07-20

I like a few other reviewers felt that some of Vanessa Mae's prior albums were better in originality and use of the violin than this album. It seems like she's trying to move even more toward a pop tilt on this album, but overall this album is definitely worth the purchase. Also, even though the violin is not predominant like prior albums her voice really shines through on the songs with vocals. I particularly like White Bird. Either way if you're a fan of hers I don't think you'll be disappointed because I really think it's an album that you just pop in and listen to!

4 out of 5 stars WHERE STORM LEFT OFF.........2003-09-29

Quite simply, Mae's latest album takes off where her last one left off. She makes you wonder why rock and roll is associated with guitars, not violins.

Once again, she weds a dizzying array of synthesized and generated sounds with violin playing of great warmth and dazzling virtousity. Expect beat-driven songs that combine her spiffy ability at the strings with various subgenres, as well as softer, more introspective pieces. The arrangements are classy as usual, and together with the well produced combinational elements, make for an entertaining album.

Caveat: it may get a little monotonous, but if you enjoyed Storm you will likely find something on Subject To Change to keep you interested.

5 out of 5 stars Violin music on steroids.......2002-01-17

The new album by Vanessa Mae marks a return to her first work. Unlike "Storm", "Subject to Change" offers more instrumental tracks, and does not sound as eclectic.

Pros:
* The album is full of energy and catchy and simple tunes.
* It is rare to see such a packed album (65 minutes) these days.
* The tracks "Destiny" and "Laughing Buddha" are like "Red Hot", Mae's signature tune, on steroids. The album is worth its price for these two tracks; the rest is just a bonus.

Cons:
* Vanessa Mae still thinks that when she sings in French, it will sound nicer. Among all those high-energy tracks, her singing feels a little out of place.
* The import version is a little pricey; you may want to wait for the US release.

Overall, Vanessa Mae has proven with her third pop album that she is here to stay, so get used to it.

3 out of 5 stars some good stuff in it........2001-12-07

Unlike Storm in which every song was distinct and unique, Subject to Change seems rather vague and hazy. Most of the songs are quite similar and seem to run around the same themes. Can't tell them apart. They could have been the same song for all i knew and they are good only as background music when i'm reading or studying. Her violin playing in this cd wasn't very obvious; often drowned out by the other instruments. Definitely not up to the standards of Storm and The Violin Player. Seems like she got so caught up with experimenting that she has neglected the violin.

The songs with vocals were more outstanding, particularly White Bird. Though the lyrics themself seemed a bit cliched at times (ok i'm not much of a literary critic so maybe you others might not feel the same) i like the song and her style. The other tracks with vocals were quite nice too even though i don't understand the language. I found track 10 and 12 really sexy and fun. V-Mae's voice isnt that great, but like I said, she has her own distinct style and it's worth listening. That's why i gave this cd 3 stars.

Oh yeah, the excessive photos of her in the booklet inside really put me off. Call me a prude or whatever: What is she selling? Her music or her looks? It reminds me way too much of boybands plastering their faces all over posters and magazines in order to attract fans. C'mon V-Mae, you don't need that. What we want from you is your _music_ not your pretty pictures.

2 out of 5 stars Major Disappointment.......2001-11-26

Although I'm a fan of her other works, I found this album extraordinarily flat and unexciting. The music is mostly trite, with little energy or passion, and much of it sounds like it was turned out on a cheap keyboard synthesizer. Most disappointing of all, the focus here is not on her violin work, which is sometimes hard to pick out-- if it's there at all -- but on vocals and other pieces which are pleasant in their own way...but not what you buy a Vanessa Mae album for. Pleasant background music, inoffensive, but with none of the spark that makes her other albums so great, and many pieces that are little more than violin-assisted disco

    4 out of 5 stars I have become less than a man.......2005-11-24

Our Lady of the Broken Spine may initially disappoint fans of Reverend Glasseye's superlative debut album, Black River Falls. In the four-year gap between the two, it's only natural that their sound should not have remained static, but initially the change is a little disorienting. There is considerably less of the "midnight cabaret" vibe on Our Lady; it sounds, if not exactly anything approaching "conventional," then less aggressively stylized. MUCH less like Tom Waits. This at first disappointed the Waits fan in me, but the music here is strong enough to ultimately sweep away any misgivings.

The Reverend has always had great lyrics, even if they have frequently been nearly indecipherable; thankfully, this time they're included in the booklet. Thematically, this is actually a much more unified record than its predecessor: nearly all the songs are first-person narratives delivered by people who are horribly, cripplingly damaged-physically, mentally, spiritually, or, more often, some combination. Hence, the album's title: Our Lady being presumably their patron saint. They desperately struggle to escape their burdens, but-naturally-their efforts are inevitably doomed.

Take "Mother Is a Carpegian." The narrator rails against, and exacts horrible revenge on, a man who has seduced (or that he imagines might seduce) his daughter, as he exhibits a strange fascination with genetics: "I've got a daughter and she looks like me/well she oughta, she's got half of my genes." This is one seriously deranged individual; the song would be good enough as it is, but then at the end we queasily come to realize that the narrator's concern for his daughter is not entirely paternal in nature. It's deadly effective, and illustrates the band's increasing lyrical sophistication.

Or look at "The Cold House Hymns," which is pure coal-black Southern Gothic. It begins with the narrator at his birth praying to be able to exact violent Old Testament retribution on his parents: "Let my small hands grow stronger so I may hammer away your wrongs;" and ends with him setting fire to the house in question in an effort at achieving transcendence via immolation: "There's a fire! There's a fire in the cold house!/Planks rustle, the windows they crack/The Lord, the Lord bequeathed me a gift/I beg my master to take it back." Quite potent. Or my favorite, the wonderfully-titled "God Help You Dumb Boy," in which he rages futilely against his own impotence: "But I can't load the bullets and I can't use a gun/I can't have no children so I can't have a son/I can't get up early, so nothing will grow/I'll lay on my land `til the Sun hangs low/'til the sun hangs low." It evokes to me the same sense of apocalyptic, eschatological allegory as did "3 Ton Chain" from BRF.

This is just skimming the surface, of course. Some songs are a bit weaker than others, but overall, this is a dense and fascinating album. Let's hope we don't have to wait another four years for the next one.

This Album is simply fantastic. The vocals the musicianship is nothing short of awesome. Why this album has recieved so little publicity is beyond me. I suggest purchasing this album along with Street Fairie. Both great albums. I only hope Cree decides to record again.

4 out of 5 stars Folk Grunge Rock w/ Great Solos.......2003-02-23

What if Ani DiFranco had come out of the Seattle Grunge scene & then fallen in with some rockers? You'd have something like Womb Amnesia. Moments of gentle peek their flowering heads abouve a boulder strewn slope of rockin' licks. It's a combination that works well.

My biggest complaint is that the instrumental sounds seem to dominate the vocal solos. But that instrumental work is nothing to complain about. Traditional rock, grunge, and even a bit of funk--this is a blend you don't want to miss.
