Even though he has released nine albums of his own in more than two decades in the music business, Joe Henry may best be known as the producer of soul man Solomon Burke's 2002 comeback record, Don't Give Up on Me. Now Henry hopes to do for soul what Ry Cooder's Buena Vista Social Club did for Cuban music, convening R&B legends Allen Toussaint, Billy Preston Irma Thomas, Mavis Staples and Ann Peebles for one week at Hollywood's Capitol Studios. But rather than rehashing the past in individual sessions, Henry assembled a house band (led by Toussaint) and demanded newly written or freshly interpreted songs. While her most recent solo release Have A Little Faith makes Staples appearance here less critical, her duet with Preston (whose organ playing is splendid) on "That's Enough"is a highlight. But the real stars are Thomas and the piano-driven rendition of Tom Jans' "Loving Arms,"and the underrated Peebles, who reinvents Bob Dylan's "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" from Nashville crooning to Beale Street believable. --Scott Holter

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

This record does nothing for any of these stellar artists. It's stale. Nor does it contribute to the soul music cannon. Or any cannon. Hey.. I've got an idea, lets get a bunch of great artists, bang a few tunes on them that they wouldn't normally sing, keep the recording production down. I'm sorry...I like every one involved with this record but we don't need this. It's like a bad sitcom staring great actors. The tracks are all pedestrian. I do not endorse this record.

Simply one of the most exciting recordings in years. New, and vibrant, performances by dearly beloved. Joe Henry continues his blessed mission in producing fresh work by great soul era artists overlooked by an increasingly homogeneous music industry. Enough grumpy old man, I Believe To My Soul is the rare thing that puts one at risk of stopping people and boring them about it. The juice produced by Henry's matching of Solomon Burke with songs by contemporary writers brought the great man to Australia; Bettye LaVette appeared on Letterman (would that she appear in the footsteps of her contemporary Betty Harris at the Prince of Wales venue in Melbourne). Henry has brought together, in alphabetical order, Ann Peebles, Billy Preston, Mavis Staples, Irma Thomas and Allen Toussaint. If even one of those names stirs, a treat awaits. Everyone is in great form. Mavis Staples is alight raising her voice in praise on album opener You Must Have That True Religion, relentless on Keep On Pushing. Irma Thomas reaches higher and higher on Loving Arms, Ann Peebles heartbreaking on When the Candle Burns Low. The album was recorded in June last year. Then came Katrina. Toussaint became one of the refugees in the Superdome and Thomas was among early hurricane missing. So it was a delight to happen upon the two closing the Grammys telecast with a musical blast for the battered Gulf Coast and the lately lamented Wilson Pickett. Too late, but what sweet noise Pickett and Joe Henry might have made. For those who like that sort of thing (salutations), Allen Toussaint is on piano throughout, arranged the horns, sings three. That he is thanked in the notes for ''unfailing generosity'' is nice. Is it worth going grumpy because the notes are a strain to read by dint of marrying magenta and black into gloom? Sigh. Ah well, overreaching design never silenced such heavenly voices.

Superb outing from a passel of soul immortals, produced by that ace producer, Joe Henry...a highly accomplished artist his own self...this is his what? 4th or 5th smash production...and the artists, from Ann Peebles to Allen Toussaint to Billy Preston (and including several others) all really shine...not to be missed.

Opera in English.......2007-03-19

Barry Banks is certainly a contender for one of the best tenors around. THis is a great example of coloratura and legato line which is very well executed in a rather booming tenor voice. I just saw Mr. Banks in "The Elixer of Love" and he was stupendous. This is a large tenor voce in the theatre which alas is difficult to capture in a studio recording...you have to take my word. THe translations are often odd as they generally are, but this recording is certainly worth having. (although I prefer in the original language)

Mr. Banks has a "heroic lyric tenor" if there is such a category. His fast vibrato and power lend the voice excitement and attention getting presence. I was intrigued by him in his stunning appearance in the Rimsky-Korsakov "Le'Coq d'Or" DVD (a not-to-be-missed experience)-- he was a stand-out there there and I went looking for other things by him. This CD is treasurable in many ways. The repertoire is interesting and the duets add flavor to the whole. The only small complaint I have is that perhaps Mr. Banks lacks just the last bit of emotional connection in his singing. You won't go wrong getting this excellent CD.

Marcel Dupré is an important historical as well as musical figure, his compositional freedom linking the golden age of Widor and Vierne with the radical rethinking that Messiaen saw through in his great organ cycles. Never doing things by halves, Naxos has reached Volume 9 of the complete organ works--mainly chamber pieces involving organ. Most substantial is the "Trio for Violin, Cello, and Organ," in one sense a throwback to the Baroque line of trio sonatas, but with a harmonic richness that indicates a late-19th-century inheritance--thoughtful, undemonstrative music, persuasively realized by Bruce Neswick and colleagues. The "Quartet" adds a viola to the lineup, but a delightful scherzando apart is a lesser affair, while the "Sonata for Cello and Organ" is a modest but interesting work (at least for the way Dupré makes a telling contrast between the sonorities of the two instruments). Again, perceptive playing from Neswick, whose Indiana organ has a clear, bright sound that makes the generous selection of Chorales interesting for the listener as well as the player. At the price, a worthwhile collection of some unusual repertoire. --Richard Whitehouse

Great Album, but No Vocal Fireworks.......2005-09-20

This is a beautfully rendered album and Joni's voice is pitch perfect. She sings every note as written. But she takes no interpretive chances and there's no vocal fireworks. The real accomplishment here are the splendid arrangements by Jeffrey Osborne and Geoff Love - two men who never met a huge orchestra they didn't like. The lush, layered arrangements are spectacular. The musicians are also first rate and for such a large gathering there's a fantastic cohesiveness. Though her singing is pleasant enough, Joni's voice is basically the 101st instrument in the entire ensemble.

Great Standards!!.......2003-02-15

This is a great album of classic standards with lush orchestrations. Joni's voice is incredibly smooth and expressive and the selections are some of the best of the Jerome Kern era of classic songwriters. My favorite is Imagination. Best version I have ever heard...as a matter of fact many of the tunes are my benchmark arrangements. If you are a fan of the 30's-50's classic love songs and ballads, this is for you!! Great for Valentines Day. Romantic stuff. This was one of my favorite albums on vinyl as a kid. Now I can get the CD. Yeah!
