There are those who will claim that this double-disc best-of is worth its price based on the inclusion of three new songs alone, and given their smolder, it's hard to argue with them. First single and disc one opener "Open Arms" is a stuff-strutting affair, with the leggy rock icon letting loose a vocal torrent to prove that in Tina years 60 is the new 25, not the new 40, and "Complicated Disaster" and "Something Special" don't sit uneasily alongside disc mates like "Typical Male" and "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)." Undiminished vocals and still-vital rock instincts aside, though, the reason to pick up this anthology is its classics. Unlike 1991's Simply the Best which pulled from 1983 till then, All the Best reaches back to 1966 for the soul-steeped "River Deep Mountain High" and chugs through the decades, dipping into the '70s for the Ike'd-up hit "Nutbush City Limits" and hanging around the '80s and '90s for the bulk of 33 tracks. "Proud Mary," a 1993 rendition, keeps on burning, and "Private Dancer" and "What's Love Got to Do With It" land as seductively on the ears as ever, but the lesser-known numbers don't lack for heat either: too many spins of swamp-rocker "Steamy Windows," for example, may require new wiper blades. -Tammy La Gorce

The Electric Light Orchestra were one of the biggest and most successful bands of the late 1970s, producing a massive string of hit singles and albums that almost any other band would envy. Their works have been cited as influences by such hip acts as Grandaddy and Super Furry Animals. Their frontman and leader Jeff Lynne has been the producer of choice for people like Paul McCartney, Tom Petty and George Harrison. From "Evil Woman", "Don't Bring Me Down" and "Mr Blue Sky" to "Livin' Thing" and "Hold On Tight", there are few duds amongst these 20 remastered tracks. ELO produced some of the biggest and best singles in rock & roll's history, and All Over The World: The Very Best Of ELO is an excellent reintroduction to this great band. Hopefully, this also signals the beginning of a long-overdue revival and re-evaluation. --Robert Burrow

5 out of 5 stars NOT A BAD GREATEST HITS COMPILATION ALBUM ON ONE CD........2007-07-07

I will be writing a review on the legendary greatest hits compilation album entitled "THE VERY BEST OF ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA (ELO), ALL OVER THE WORLD" by one of Rock's all-time greatest bands ever. I give you one of Britain's pride and joy's and one of Birmingham, England's favorite sons, E-L-E-C-T-R-I-C L-I-G-H-T O-R-C-H-E-S-T-R-A! This legendary compilation album was originally released in 2005 on Compact Disc on the Epic / Legacy Records label which is manufactured and distributed by Epic Records, a division of Sony BMG Music Entertainment Ltd. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA (ELO) will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording some of Rock's all-time greatest sacred anthems ever. When guitarist Jeff Lynne met up and joined forces with lead vocalist and frontman Roy Wood, bassist Rick Price and drummer Bev Bevan, ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA would be born with the same traditional music sound values like that of ELO'S most favorite band and idol's, THE BEATLES. When ELO was formed in 1970, Jeff Lynne made it perfectly clear that the band's intentions were to pick up where THE BEATLES classic anthem "I Am The Walrus" left off. ELO composed and recorded some great legendary hit songs and albums through the years during the period of 1973 to 2001. Listening to all of their hit songs, it is clearly evident in which you can actually feel THE BEATLES influence in this legendary band. In my opinion, had THE BEATLES stayed together from 1970 to 2001, ELO would have sounded in comparison just like THE FAB FOUR. And if that wasn't enough, ELO were actually one of the early pioneers to present their legendary concert performances with their rare breathtaking and explosive vibrant light and laser displays along with their massive flying saucer stage sets. Which now brings me to the legendary greatest hits compilation album I'm about to review for all of you today. "THE VERY BEST OF ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA (ELO), ALL OVER THE WORLD" chronicles and highlights the majority of ELO'S greatest hit songs from the 1973 to 2001 period. In my opinion, this legendary compilation album is without a doubt, a true testament of the brilliance and musical creativity of four masterminded genius'. This legendary compilation album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time. This album is the tales in the life and world of ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, their music is their story that speaks for itself.

It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of ELO to speak for itself and back it up musically as it was originally truly intended to be heard and listened to. "THE VERY BEST OF ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, ALL OVER THE WORLD" from 2005 begins with the incredible upbeat Rocker "Mr. Blue Sky," the forever ELO stamped trademark Rocker, "Evil Woman," the forever blistering ELO stamped trademark Rocker, "Don't Bring Me Down," this legendary anthem is a perfect example of how beautifully and harmoniously classical orchestrated music blends with Rock n' Roll as THE BEATLES forever proved it, "Sweet Talkin' Woman," the breathtaking orchestrated Hard Rocker "Shine A Little Love," the amazing synthesized and orchestrated Rocker "Turn To Stone," the breakthrough synthesized and orchestrated mild Rocker "The Diary Of Horace Wimp," the beautifully slow/medium acoustic Rocker "Confusion," the groundbreaking synthesized Rocker with the feelings and sounds bringing back the true spirit of the fifties, "Hold On Tight," the beautifully arranged orchestrated Rocker "Livin' Thing," the beautifully slow mindblowing sounds and special effects mild Rocker, "Telephone Line," the unforgettable orchestrated ans synthesized Rock anthem "All Over The World," the beautifully slow sounding orchestrated synthesized Rocker "Wild West Hero," the slow and smooth orchestrated Rocker "Showdown," the a*s kicking ELO stamped trademark orchestrated Hard Rocker "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle," the original genuine Rockin' version that was also recorded by OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN, "Xanadu," the slow teaser erupting into a a*s kicking, explosive Hard orchestrated Rocker, "Rockaria," the beautifully slow and soothing orchestrated mild Rocker, "Strange Magic," the merciless synthesized Hard Rocker "Alright" and the fast and energetic synthesized Rocker "Rock And Roll Is King." May I also add that the music track recording arrangements on all of these great hit songs were layed down perfectly. I would also like to commend ELO on their most beautiful harmony vocals. Their singing sounded so refreshing and heavenly.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary greatest hits compilation album for everyone of all ages to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. If you love THE BEATLES, you will love this album. This priceless gem has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. There are also many other ELO greatest hits compilation albums that you might want to check out and research further into before you make your final decision. In doing this, you will have found the best album that is right for you and suits your music tastes and needs. When this is accomplished, you will have also taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own personal ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA music collection. You can do all of your researches and album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store.

In closing, despite changing numerous band personnel in the late 70's and throughout the 80's, ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA would still successfully continue in delighting their fans with their legendary albums and concert tours to highly critically acclaim for many more years up to the very day when the band officially disbanded in 1988. Prior to 1988, from 1987 onwards, Jeff Lynne has become one of the world's most sought after in-demand songwriter and producer, successfully collaborating and producing with legendary artists as well as personal friends such as the late great George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, the late great Roy Orbison, Del Shannon, Tom Petty and Brian Wilson. Lynne was also a member of the legendary Grammy-award winning band THE TRAVELING WILBURIES. It seems to me that Jeff Lynne keeps himself pretty busy and active in the music world. With all of this in mind, ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA has forever left their place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and their many contributions, accomplishments and achievements will never be forgotten or denied. So here's to you Jeff, Roy, Rick and Bev. Thanks for the great memories and moments. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA FOREVER! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

4 out of 5 stars A GREAT ALBUM.......2007-06-28

THIS IS AN ALBUM NAMED "OUT OF THE BLUE." IT'S A GREAT ALBUM. YOU MUST GET IT . IT'S FANTASTIC! "STARLIGHT" AND "MR BLUE SKY" ARE GREAT SONGS, AND "SWEET TALKING WOMAN" IS SUPER TOO. HEY WHAT ABOUT "TURN TO STONE" AND "ITS OVER?" THEY'RE AWESOME ALSO.

I LIKE THE WEIRD SOUNDS AT THE BEGINNING OF "STARLIGHT" AND "SUMMER AND LIGHTNING." ALSO, "STARLIGHT" HAS A GREAT LINE THAT SAYS 'STARLIGHT, YOUR EYES ARE LOOKING DOWN ON ME.' "JUNGLE" IS ALSO A PRETTY GOOD SONG.

SEE YOU SOON. BYEBYE.

5 out of 5 stars Quit.......2007-05-27

crying about the couple or three songs this album doesn't contain for ***** sake its a single cd. would you like them to include the whole ELO library? heres a thought stop being so cheap and go buy a another set which includes the songs that you cant live without or better yet put the cd in play it and be happy. That being said this is a very good collection. Thank You.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest hits is a hit.......2007-03-30

If you love ELO then you will love this compilation.

4 out of 5 stars A NICE COLLECTION OF ELO HITS, I WISH THERE COULD HAVE BEEN SOME ODD HITS FOR A CHANGE................2007-01-16

Nice overseen remastering job by Jeff Lynn. With the exception of the new version of "Xanadu"(I wish it was the 1980 version with Olivia Newton John), the song list is pretty nice. This sampling of ELO hits is a great way for a new ELO fan to start an ELO collection. Nice linear notes by Jeff. Again as with all the ELO greatest hits and ELO box sets there are favorite songs missing. Best bet by all the Epic /Legacy remastered ELO cd releases, but if you just want one disc full of hits this disc is a nice edition to have. I wish "Look At Me Now", "Dreaming Of 4000" and a few more ELO oddities were on this collection I know these are two odd songs that are not known as ELO greatest hits material but it would have added a little different curriculum to this latest ELO greatest hits release. I still enjoyed the listen it brought brought back alot of memories. While I listened to this ELO greatest hits collection cd, as usual I cracked an ELO smile. Recommended listening...............

Truth-in-packaging regulations are strained to the breaking point--some previous work with a former band was pretty darn "best" too--but if we're talking about Macca the Singles Artist, this compilation does highlight the many sides of a celebrated melodist, bandleader, and hitmaker--from the banalities of "My Love" to the electrifying buzz of "Jet." It won't win any stylistic cohesion awards, and followers will miss album tracks like "Picasso's Last Words" and "That Would Be Something." But All the Best collects the more popular Wings hits and throws in some necessary rarities ("C-Moon," one of many great B-sides that McCartney has thrown away), star duets (former friend, now-Fabs copyright-holder Michael Jackson on "Say Say Say"; Stevie Wonder on the inevitable "Ebony and Ivory"), live cuts (an un-Chipmunked "Coming Up"), and soundtrack odds and ends, like the freaky Bond theme "Live and Let Die." --Don Harrison

just about all of his greates hits AFTER the beatles broke up.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, one of the best.......2007-03-21

Awesome CD. I think some of Paul's best music was with Wings. Excellent music. I remember when a lot of these songs came out in the mid to late seventies. They are as good now as they were then. These classics will always be listened to. "Coming Up" and "a little luck" are two of my favorites on this CD. The music is really original, nothing out there sounds like it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2007-01-23

This is a great collection of Paul McCartneys best songs he made after his Beatle days. This man had a great career with Wings as well as various solo albums. This is a reflection of those days when he kept releasing hit after hit.Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey is one of my favorites here.A kind of fun song and addictive.I also like the song My Love,a slow song and its a great tune.
There is a whole stack of other great hits from this mastermind of music.

In 1967 Glen Campbell broke through to become a household name following his hit version of Jimmy Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix." With follow-up hits "I Wanna Live" and "Wichita Lineman" paving the way for his enormously successful CBS variety show The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, Campbell rode a trail of hit singles well into the 1970s. This hits collection reflects his wide-ranging repertoire and flair for mixing old and new. Though his spin on John Hartford's "Gentle on My Mind" barely broke the Top 30 in 1967, it gained immortality as the Goodtime Hour theme song. With the now-classic "Rhinestone Cowboy" and "Southern Nights," Campbell's ability to create chart-topping country singles that resonated with non-country fans was years ahead of its time. Tackling songs forever associated with others (the Everly Brothers' "Let It Be Me" and "All I Have to do Is Dream" and Conway Twitty's "It's Only Make Believe") can be risky, but Campbell's strong, passionate interpretations put them across. --Rich Kienzle

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not bad, not bad........2007-05-20

Great compilation of Glen's better known recordings. The quality of the CD recording quality could have been better. It's very listenable, but not up to the standards better equipment demands.

5 out of 5 stars I like this album.......2007-02-07

A lot more great music than I bargained for.

I like this album a lot. Highway Man and Gentle on My Mind are great tracks.

4 out of 5 stars nearly great musical selection.......2006-11-16

Glen Campbell is now an under-appreciated talent, as his superstar - even mega-star - status was prime in the 60s and 70s. However, the songs he recorded, both as top session musician on others' recordings, and his own recordings as a singer, stand the test of time. I could wish the selection of songs included one I'd seen him perform on television - MacArthur's Park - and I could wish this CD compilation had the selections in chronological order to better appreciate the sophistication of the talent and the choices he made. One has to assume, like most compilation CDs, the song list order is not designed to feature the artist but to grab the attention of a casual shopper, who typically doesn't glance beyond the first 5 song listings. Therefore, the most famous 'classic' Glen Campbell's are represented, as is the distinctive mournful quality of his voice, a rather strong vocalist, probably underrated even at the time of his greatest fame. Unfortunately, one would wish the cover versions of other performers' classics - "Let It Be Me," for one - were more adventurous in the arrangement. A literal version doesn't serve anyone. I would have preferred a version of the song(s) as if Glen Campbell had never heard them done before and how he would have interpreted/arranged the song(s) to suit himself. Some people find Campbell's voice too "vanilla" but really he is the icing on the cake. With the strange lilting sadness in all his vocals, even the upbeat song classics like "Southern Nights," his voice is never icky sweet, but just right. In fact, can anyone really imagine any other singer doing justice to "Witchita Lineman" or "Galveston" with the mournful quality of his voice alone? Even though many of the arrangements of songs are too syrupy - elevator music, as it's known - Glen Campbell the vocalist is surely unique, and that attribute will stand the test of time. If you just want to have a single rather comprehensive disk on hand, of this artist, then this is the one to grab - that's the reason I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars The Wichita Lineman Is Still on The Line.......2006-08-27

This album is well worth the purchase price due to the integrity of the lyrics. The music is a bit dippy in some of the pieces, including Witchita Lineman, but all the favorites included on this disc are well worth the time to listen to and enjoy. No matter what you think of Campbell, this soup is good food. :-)

2 out of 5 stars Unforgivable sound quality.......2006-01-09

I bought this knowing full well the dubious sound quality based on other reviews but wanted it anyway because it does have the best selection of any single Glen Campbell compilation. After listening to it I am astounded-the sound quality is not what I expected. In this day and age there is NO excuse for a mediocre-sounding CD and this one definitely is. The liner notes say that it is remastered by somebody but it seems as though that little care was given in the remastering process. It is truly an amateurish job. Don't get me wrong-this is NOT a terrible-sounding recording. In fact, 15 years ago this would have sounded just fine, but this is a 2003 issued CD, and it should sound better than this.

4 out of 5 stars Rasta-punkian?.......2007-06-27

I thought that their first album would be pure punk and was slightly suprised to hear reggae music interjected between groups of songs. It gives the album a nice contrast but I'm not a big fan of reggae. I get the fact that both types of music have anti-authoritarian ideals, but it may be awhile before I decide to buy any more of their albums. Different Class Harmonica

5 out of 5 stars PMA Mofo's.......2007-04-19

This is the real stuff right here. The Godfathers of hardcore. It was the craziest and fastest album of its time. The songs still influence till this day. They invented the breakdown, listen to Right Brigade... I want to show that to every kung-fu dancing emo jerk to teach them what real hardcore is. Banned in D.C. has the best intro to any song ever... nuff said. Filled with energy and positivity, this is a must have in any collection.

So i got this cd on friday having only heard the song soul craft and at first i was a little dissapointed because it was nothing like i expected, but i listened to it a few more times and i love it if youre into any punk or hardcore this is a must have

5 out of 5 stars i still have a tape deck in my car.......2006-12-10

and this goes in whenever the cd player runs out of batteries. who knows what punk really is and i'm not looking for an arguement about the subject but the people who say they like "punk" and listen to avril lavinge (spelling?) should have a copy of this record thrown at them from a moving car. this record, i think is their very best, the fastest record i've ever heard, even bad brains themselves couldn't keep the pace. rock for light has a lot of the same songs but i just feel like they're weak in comparison, maybe they were on better speed for this one, who knows...anyway, it's so much more raw and the tones of the guitars, particularly on the solos, have a marvelous presence. just one of the best records ever in any genre, it can be apreciated on the basis of sheer energy alone.

4 out of 5 stars that's right--four stars........2006-08-25

Bad Brains' early recordings found themselves in so many different releases that defining anything as their "first" album is pretty dicey. The Brains' apparent "first" demos were released on CD in the late 90's in the album "Black Dots;" this album itself had been previously released in the late 80's as "Attitude: The ROIR Sessions" before getting the special edition treatment after an endorsement by the Beastie Boys.

While this isn't their best album in terms of performance and songwriting, it is certainly their most accessible. Earl Hudson's drums lead the attack, directing Darryl Jenifer's bass and Dr. Know's guitar like a drill sergeant preparing troops for war. Dr. Know, easily the most gifted guitarist in the history of punk, drops crazy power-chord rhythms and frenzied, acrobatic solos, while Jenifer reinvents rock bass with his jazz-funk runs and tight grooves. Much is made of frontman H.R.'s pioneering performance on this album; while his incredible range does sound remarkable on this album (particularly within the context of what was coming out of the D.C. punk scene at the time), the cheap effects somewhat undermine its impact.

What keeps this album from being a five-star rockfest, at least for me, is the campy production value (Black Dots, recorded in the varying rooms of some guy's house, is mixed better than this album). Most of these songs were re-recorded for the vastly superior Rock For Light album.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-03-18

Listening to this CD brought back many memories of the typical angst of young love, loneliness, and growing pains. (Glad those days are over!) But, Karla Bonoff is a true poet and I look forward to hearing new middle-age material from her someday.

5 out of 5 stars A great easy listening companion..........2006-07-03

I'm only 27, so I didn't grow up with this or even come to this until I was around 21, so I'm not an expert. However, after having her song 'Goodbye My Friend' played as a farewell song at a camp, and hearing it in an episode of 'The Wonder Years', I was sold. I kept that song in my head, not knowing who it was or the title, though I had a good idea. In the end, a search on the old 'Napster' for the title of that song came up with the one I was looking for. I saw the CD at Borders and bought it immediately. After reading the liner notes, she mentions that the aforementioned song was written for a cat she had that she lost. Although it's cheesy, I've always thought it was a perfect song for any wonderful pet. I hoped that when my favorite pet passed on, I'd be able to play it for him. Just yesterday, he passed, and I was lucky enough to share it with him. It's a great memory, a great song, and the entire album is great easy listening. I'll take her over Linda Ronstadt any day...

5 out of 5 stars great compilation of a great, expressive artist.......2004-09-26

Listening to this terrific compilation, it really seems Karla Bonoff had a magic touch. Her songwriting on track after track is incredible, & her singing is beautiful & complements the material perfectly. If you have records in your collection with her name on it, but don't have any of her own recorded work, then for goodness sake this is a terrific CD to get! Granted, it's not that hard to compile a Karla compilation in the sense that, as of 1999 when this came out, she had only put out 4 solo albums, along with one album as a member of the group Bryndle (they have since released the album "House of Silence" in 2003). Her lone solo composition from Bryndle's self-titled 1995 album is here, but otherwise everything's from her solo albums. Of the 16 tracks included here, there's very little to complain about. Her greatness is on full display all over the place--the haunting "Someone To Lay Down Beside Me"; easy riding, ultra catchy tunes like "I Can't Hold On", "Baby Don't Go", "Tell My Why" (clearly superior to the carbon copy Wynonna Judd version), & "Isn't It Always Love"; & moving love ballads like "If He's Ever Near", "Lose Again", "Falling Star", "Restless Nights", & "Wild Heart of the Young". I do feel it was an unwise move to place the bouncy "Isn't It Always Love" after the mournful "Goodbye My Friend"--it's a jolting transition, & not pleasantly so, even though each of those individual tracks are great. Having "Restless Nights" & "Isn't It Always Love" simply trade places in the track listing would have helped the flow, but they're great tracks all the same. There are a couple of losers in the track listing that put the impersonal, unsatisfying version of Karla Bonoff on full display, & as far as I'm concerned, these tracks are not the REAL Karla--they feel like they come from a completely different "artist". Thankfully though, it's just two tunes. Karla admits in her liner notes that the dull, sappy "All My Life" wasn't a personal song, & that it was initially written for a movie, & it sure sounds like it. Then, there's the inescapable inclusion of "Personally", however, I give Karla thumbs up for burying this annoying hit at track 15, the second to last song on the CD. The disc ends with the traditional "The Water Is Wide" which features James Taylor--there is other essential Karla material missing that easily surpasses "The Water Is Wide"--it's okay, though, & it seems to be a fan favorite, & it's a respectable way to close the album--it's certainly a heck of a lot better than "Personally", & there's some nice accordian on it. As another reviewer pointed out, Karla did do some songs that weren't on her albums, like "Somebody's Eyes", which is a fine tune (although she didn't write it) that's on the "Footloose" soundtrack--it would have been nice to have on here in place of "All My Life". However, the lion's share of what you do get on this disc is the REAL, sincere Karla & is mostly marvelous. 7 tracks are from her 1977 self-titled debut--a handful of essential songs from her second album, 1979's "Restless Nights", are missing, but the album is still well-represented by its title track & "Baby Don't Go". If you're a big fan of the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, and Jackson Browne, you simply can't go wrong with this CD. With great sound quality, & cool liner notes including Karla's self-written comments for each track, this is a terrific CD that any fan of Karla will be delighted to have in their collections!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best "Best-of" CDs you'll ever hear!.......2004-03-19

Frequently, compilation CDs are an uneven offering of commercially successful tracks layered with choice cuts from the recording artist; however, Karla's Bonoff's "All My Life" CD represents her solo recording career without any such burdon--primarily because she had only one big hit!

The Top-20 hit "Personally" is included, of course, but lesser-known hits such as "Somebody's Eyes" (from the film "Footloose") and "Standing Right Next To Me" (from the film "8 Seconds") are omitted in favor of vastly superior material, such as the delicious "Someone To Lay Down Beside Me" and the heart-breaking "Goodbye My Friend"--both written by Bonoff's expert hand.

Through and through, this CD features exemplary pop music that is produced with respect for both the song and the listener. I have exposed many of my friends to Karla Bonoff's music...and they are invariably impressed. This is due to the fact that she is a termedously gifted somngwriter with a smooth, expressive voice. Order this CD today! You will be grateful you did!!!

5 out of 5 stars True Talent, little hype.......2003-12-30

Karla Bonoff has not gotten the huge media hype that many female singers have gotten, but she is as good if not better than the more famous of her genre.
I recommend this CD in particular because just about every song is a beauty. Karla is a gifted musician and lyricist. Her songs are achingly beautiful and she has a lovely, soft voice. If you are looking for a musical talent which is unspoiled by commercialism and marketing, this is the artist to look into. You will not be disappointed!

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02

This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-11-01

This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.

4 out of 5 stars Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27

This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.

I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.

Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.

5 out of 5 stars Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08

This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of

the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have

done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some

of which still show some of their age, but come across quite

well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this

disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to

get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any

more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to

try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's

early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.

If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!

5 out of 5 stars The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07

I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.

I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.

I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to know Corelli's art, this is the right CD.......2007-03-10

Franco Corelli had one of the powerful tenor voices of the twentieth century. Think Mario del Monaco with more beauty and grace; think Richard Tucker with a smoother voice. He had annoying touches in his singing, such as those "catches" here and there. But, with Tucker, he is, in my estimation, one of the two most powerful and attention riveting tenors in the past century. Other tenors were more artistic, provided better characterization (think Domingo, Gigli, Pavarotti, Gedda, Caruso, and some others).

But Corelli was a wonder of nature! Some samples: "Ah si, ben mio. . .Di quella pira." If there were an aria made for Corelli, this would be it. His big, rich, powerful voice fits this cut nicely. Not much subtlety here. In "Di quella pira," he hits the high notes in a stentorian manner. There are those mannerisms, but they are so easily forgiven, taking into account that rich, lustrous voice.

"Celeste Aida" is another representative cut. This is a powerful version. Also, note how he goes from forte to piano at the end of this aria. A powerful effect indeed.

Then, there are the twin arias from "Tosca." In "Recondita armonia," his rich voice is well manifest. He exhibits a smooth line in his singing. This is a powerful version of this well known aria. "E lucevan le stele" displays again that rich voice. At one point, he goes from forte to piano in a mesmerizing manner (Who'd have thought it?). His final "la vita" grabs one's attention.

Finally, "Nessun dorma." Well, smoothly, and powerfully sung. The final "vincero" is powerfully rendered, leaving goose bumps on the spine.

This is the very best of Franco Corelli. Those who want to get a sense of the vocal prowess of one of the most powerful tenors of the 20th century should attend to this double CD set.

5 out of 5 stars excellent gift.......2007-02-09

I gave it to my father and he says Its an amazing cd.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Tenor of This Century!.......2007-02-03

Franco Corelli is the greatest tenor of this century. Although there are many fine tenors including Carlo Bergonzi - no tenor comes close to singing with the pure heart and animal magnetism of Franco Corelli. Surprisingly, he was also quite comfortable with bel canto, listen to the incredible "A te o'cara". I've heard "Nessun Dorma" sung by many excellent tenors and hands down, none can touch the sublime beauty of Corelli's version. This 2cd set of his greatest arias is a wonderful gift for any opera fan. "Recondita Armonia" is my personal favorite. His thrilling vocal beauty and intensity of performance is truly unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars Ah... Franco :}.......2007-01-10

Such a pleasing voice. I can't believe the clarity and perfection. He was well before my time and others have become more 'popular' since then, but for some reason his voice seems better than the more current singers. I do not know much about opera so I will have to rely only on my own ears. I happily recommend this double album. I like to have it playing on the 5 CD changer with other opera cds, mixing through them...it is a perfect saturday morning accompaniment. enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
