3 out of 5 stars Pleasant Enough.......2007-02-19

A pleasant score. Fine singing, especially the wonderful Liz Callaway. The score, however, doesn't have those one or two numbers that stand out and stop you in your tracks. I haven't seen the show, and perhaps when integrated with the text.....

5 out of 5 stars Pure joy.......2005-03-08

I have bought this CD with Wild party and each of them was amazing. Fist I have heard Wild party and after that I haven't thought that I would enjoy the second one but Brownstone was simply so amazing. I didn't skip songs, because all of them are beautiful sung by actors who's singing voice are pure, strong and wonderful.
As you can see, I'm a true Brian D'arcy James fan but each singer amazed me, really.
Buy this Cd if you want to hear a fantastic musical.

4 out of 5 stars A Different Type of Musical.......2004-03-09

I bought BROWNSTONE at the recommendation of a friend and have mixed feelings. I know this show has quite a history as far as transfer from off-Broadway to Broadway and the controversy surrounding its revamping for its journey to the Great White Way. I think the songs are catchy and clever, I just am sort of turned off by the orchestrations. The instruments sound like they are coming from a computer built in 1990. They sound too fake and I think there could be better orchestration, though the melodies are nice. Some songs are just corny like The Cell Phone Song, added only recently. Certain songs are great like The opening, Fiction Writer, Camouflage, and Babies on the Brain.

I would say that if you are looking for a musical CD to add to your collection that is a little different from what you're used to, BROWNSTONE is for you. And also, it features an amazing cast of seasoned veterans and new comers as well.

All in all, a nice CD.

    4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

    1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

4 out of 5 stars Didn't know what song meant at first.......2004-11-27

Don't flame me for this but initially(haven't heard any other version), I thought the song "There She Goes" was about lesbiasm! Then I thought it was about a mother singing to her child but now I know the lyrics stand for something much more sinister,in heroin addiction.
But this version and the La's have ther own merits and are both worth listening to.

    5 out of 5 stars WTF..........2004-11-05

they r always branded by "christian band".
    .
does that mean that they can sing?
this version of "there she goes" isn't as good as the original La's version, but give me a break
this is a cover; it doesnt need to be as good as the first one.
they were unknown before the song, kinda, they did like any local band would do; sing a cover.
but ppl thought that it was good enough , thats how america heard it. They followed the suit of covering great songs because they owe thier success to this
they are a really good band, only if they get a chance
your attitudes r not of a normal un-bias music listener.
but dont buy the single, buy an album; better value

1 out of 5 stars The worst cover i've heard........2004-04-29

The La's produced an absolute classic in 'There She Goes' but this is absolutely atrocious record. Whilst the original was played with a proper feeling and drive this is sung out of tune, poorly performed and really sounds awful. 'Kiss Me' is an awful record too. My advice, Buy the La's version but avoid this totally!!

1 out of 5 stars Disposable Cover Song.......2004-03-22

The first time I heard this I wanted to kick my TV screen in. Apparently, Sixpence think so highly of this song they're willing to sell it to the hucksters for commercial use. I'm with the LA's fans, get their version which is on a great album. I hope this trend doesn't get out of hand--mediocre bands selling cover versions of great songs to ad agencies. Thank goodness for the Neil Young's of the world who will never sell out.

    1 out of 5 stars Nobody Understands...........2003-10-04

The majority of reviewers on this board contend that this rubbish cover of The La's immortal single "There She Goes" (absolutely the best record of the past 15 years) is superior to the original, which is akin to saying that Oasis are a better pure pop band than The Beatles. Firstly, Sixpence None The Richer (a Christian band) don't seem to understand that Lee Mavers' classic, chiming tune is actually about heroin addiction! Secondly, the reviewers here who keep mumbling about this song's debt to The Velvet Underground don't understand that Mavers was far more talented than Lou Reed could ever hope to be (I abhor "...& Nico," easily the most overrated album of all-time). Simply, the fact that the Liverpudlian genius's signature tune has been turned into a MTV tween hit is an atrocity.

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

    4 out of 5 stars A Softer Cave.......2006-03-22

Nick Cave can be nasty and harsh, this is his softer side.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the price of admission.......2004-12-09

I was a bit puzzled when I heard that "Breathless" was to be lifted as a part of a double-A - there are stronger songs on the new set, the most obvious being "Supernaturally" and "Cannibal's Hymn". But, surprisingly, this new mix of "Breathless" makes the song better - it's just noticable, but you'll like it, trust me. The track has a bit more meaning now, which is good for a Nick Cave song. "There She Goes, My Beautiful World" was a stunning track on the original record, and this edit loses little. Great stuff. Finally, the b-side, "Under This Moon", is great - it borrows a bit from the music of "Let The Bells Ring", but that's no bad thing.

Cave's new album is great, and this makes one of the songs on it that bit better. You can't go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars refreshing for Face.......2001-08-19

glad to hear Babyface trying His Hat at something different. He needed a change of pace.He has been having a Solid Run over the past decade of being Composer&Producer.but His material was all mellow.this is a cool switch up for Him.this lead-off track is catchy.

      5 out of 5 stars Hotter than a 4 alarm fire.......2001-07-26

What happens when you take one of the greatest r&b artists of our time and match him up with the hottest producers out right now? What happens is you get one of the best songs of the Summer of 2001. Although, I am sure it is hard for some people to stomach Babyface and The Neptunes on the same song. The formula ends up being prefect. It's almost as if Babyface has received a temporary transformation from what you are use to him doing. When I think of Babyface, I think of "Two Occasions", "Sweet November", "Whip Appeal", Soon As I Get Home", etc. This is definitely a nice lead single to his Arista debut, "Face To Face", which is tentatively scheduled to be released on September 11th. This track will definitely get you on the dance floor and Babyface and The Neptunes definitely hooked the lyrics up as well. There are 5 snippets to other songs on the single, as well as, an instrumental of "There She Goes". This song is probably Babyface's best uptempo song of all time. Even better than my previous favorite uptempo song, "It's No Crime".

5 out of 5 stars It Got Me.......2001-07-07

I have to admit when i first heard this song i wasnt impressed. As a matter of fact i thought it was booty. But then as i began to hear it more it grew on me. THe beat to this song is pimp tight and Babyface seems to hit the right notes. I would recommend buying this single for 4 bucks. Instrumental! on here. Peep it.

      5 out of 5 stars ***There She goes...Hot Single***.......2001-06-24

Babyface doesn't hold back on this one. "There She Goes," the first single off his up-comming album "Face 2 face" is an up-tempo song that will get you moving in no time. It's a very catchy song with a hot beat. If you like R&B music I suggest you get this single. In every way this single is definitely worth your 1.99$. Artists like Babyface remind me of why I love music so much. Don't miss out out on this one. Just push play and blast the volume.
