5 out of 5 stars AMAZING GRACE!.......2007-07-25

I love Erasure and have for over 20 years. I listen to Erasure and Marc Almond exclusively, as I find them full of heart and soul that is profoudly moving. At first I was thrown off by this album since it is so different. It took me about 2 weeks to fall in love with it but now I am hooked! The songs have wonderful music and the words are so sexy! It's great to dance to! The songs are equally profound as in the past and do touch my soul like only Erasure can do. Very highly recommended. Golden Heart and How My Eyes Adore You are my favorites. I love this album and it is one of the best yet!

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Vince and Andy - Welcome Back Erasure!.......2007-05-31

I've been an Erasure fan since the beginning -- unlike many who got on board much later, I actually remember the rare Thomas the Train cover for "Oh L'Amour" -- and I have to say this is a terrific album! After the interesting but ultimately unsatisfying reinvention for "Union Street" and the equally interesting but not terribly original "Other People's Songs" -- and let's not even talk about "Loveboat", this is a much-needed return to their vintage synth-driven sound.

More upbeat and peppy than "Nightbird" (which I also loved), "Light at the End of the World" sounds like a cross between "Cowboy" and "Wild!" to me -- with a little bit of "Chorus" and "I Say I Say I Say" thrown in for good measure. "Sucker For Love" sounds like an updated version of "La Gloria", and it's even more fun. "Sunday Girl" is a perfect synthpop masterpiece. "I Could Fall In Love With You" puts me in mind of "Don't Say Your Love Is Killing Me", and so it goes on with all Vince's vintage bleeps, buzzes, and knob-twiddling. By the way, if you've got quick ears, you'll also here echoes of "Always", "Treasure", "Snappy", "Crown of Thorns", and even "March On Down The Line". Listen closely! :)

It sounds like he's dusted off some of the old analog keyboards and sequencers, to great effect. Andy's vocals are in tip-top shape, only stretched a little on the deepest notes (like the notes he used to lose himself in so beautifully on "You Surround Me"). A fantastic album, and it couldn't come at a better time.

Welcome back, Erasure!

3 out of 5 stars STOP! Stand there where you are...and DON'T buy this version of the CD!!!.......2007-05-23

Immediately search for the album again and get the 'limited edition' version with the two bonus tracks. It's less money than this version--and the two bonus tracks are two of Erasure's best!!!

5 out of 5 stars Make room in your collection!.......2004-07-23

Time of Our Lives (TOOL) is a fresh new track by PVD and Vega 4. It's not rock, it's not trance, it is totally something new and fresh. Even though rock fans would only enjoy one track from this CD (radio edit), it still a great buy. Then there is the traditional club mix from pvd where every electronic music fan would enjoy. One downside is the lyrics (Time for |this|, time for |that|, repeat, Time of our lives...).

The "b" side to this is a track done by pvd, "Connected". Featured on the motorola commercial, it was a hit! A very nice melody to it.

Buy it now, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars A Smashing Hit!.......2004-02-23

Another hit by PvD? How come I am not surprised? This song is absolutely fabulous and the vocals and beats are terrific. It's also quite similar to one of his previous works, "Nothing But You." If you like that song, chances are you'll enjoy this one. I am pretty sure that I heard this song somewhere else (besides from PvD), but who cares. If there is another song, PvD just made it 10x better.

5 out of 5 stars Best Compliment to My Music Collection!.......2003-10-16

This single is absolutely awesome.
Played this song all the way to California and home. Definately worth the buy and I am happy to have another Paul Van Dyk single in my collection!

5 out of 5 stars An Essential CD Single!.......2003-10-09

An Outstanding single! The 'PVD Club Mix' of "Time of Our Lives" rocks the house, and I feel is a better version of the original song... more Trance beats within this remix.

And, of course, the amazing remixes of "Connected" are solid material that even Paul van Dyk outdid himself on!

Essential! Just buy it!

After something of a departure--two live discs and the unplugged Union Street (2006)--Erasure returns to full electronic form. From the languid opening wash of "Sunday Girl," Andy Bell and Vince Clarke make no bones about wearing old hats. Most of Light at the End of the World works within the familiar confines of the vintage Erasure formula, drunk on everyman synthesizers, listing through painfully vague and obvious rhymes. ("I get really repetitive because I don't read enough!" Bell admits.) Backed a long-studied love of pop, gospel, and the dance floor, Bell and Clarke revel in this stuff. "Sucker for Love" and "Fly Away" dabble most obviously in such pap, but the band still packs a few surprises, if only for the devoted. "Storm in a Teacup" tackles the alcoholism of Bell's mother in a rare confluence of straightforward storytelling and concrete imagery, and despite being an insincerely fictitious character study, "Darlene" moves with a syncopated, driving bounce that Erasure has rarely, if ever, found in 22 years of mid-tempo electro-meandering. If you don't like Erasure already, you probably won't take a shining to Light at the End of the World. If you do, let's hope their world spins on. --Jason Kirk

5 out of 5 stars What's so wrong with the 'classic' label?.......2007-07-24

Erasure have crafted their best album in years, possibly since Chorus in 1991. So many reviewers, professional and amateur, have written off this CD as 'classic' Erasure, scolding them for being, well, Erasure. From the opening synth call of Sunday Girl to the lift that is I Don't Know Why, this album is gloriously exciting, well-written and clever. Each song fits together intricately and while Sunday Girl, I Could Fall in Love with You (with its beautiful video) and Storm in a Teacup, first stood out for me, I keep finding new favorites as I continue listening to the CD. There are no throwaway tracks on this CD. In this age of random-play iPods, it is seldom that I listen to complete CDs in order anymore. Being able to have thousands of songs at one's disposal can make great music disappear into the electronic shuffle. This CD, however, has captured my attention in a way that no other recent pop releases have, whether by Erasure (or Andy Bell) or other artists (Pet Shop Boys, Kelly Clarkson). I will be listening to the CD for a long time. It defines Erasure today, and any obvious nods to their past sound only serve to prove that their sound is strong and enduring, unlike the "top" music of today, which I am very grateful they didn't try to emulate (hello, Robbie Williams and Madonna) just to go to the top of the charts.

5 out of 5 stars Have fun for a change!.......2007-07-21

Every 10 years Erasure produces a very good album. In 1987 it was the "Innocents" with the big top 40 hits. Then in 1997 came "Cowboy", IMHO thier best, now late in the game of pop music-2007 comes "Light" filled with danceable singalongs that still can touch my heart.

A revival of sort back to the day of glitteringly produced synth pop that your granny may tap her feet to. "Sucker for Love" really revives this almost forgotten style. They were the first openly gay band who sold really well. Now,being out, "drags" bands down.(no pun intended)

Most of the songs work really well. Andy Bell keeps it personal, sharing his trials of life. "Fly Away" makes me feel good about my own losses in life.We are all in this together.I love you after all these years, Andy!!! "Glass Angel" has an urgency that gives a dark ending to an upbeat album. I hope these guys have another great album in 2017!

5 out of 5 stars One of their best albums!!!!.......2007-07-10

This is one of their best albums and the two bonus tracks in the Deluxe Edition are better than most of the tracks in the standard edition. Buy it now!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not their best and certainly not their worst........2007-07-07

This is not a bad album, but it is not their best. I agree that this returns to the dancier pop sounds of Chorus and prior albums. Still, it is missing that that depth and originality that will make these songs classics similar to A Little Respect, Blue Savannah, I Love To Hate You or Always.

What you have here is a polished, enjoyable but somewhat samey sounding album. I love this band, and I really want to love this, but it just seems like an average album to me. I guess all fans will have their favorites. I lean more towards the synthy sweetness of I Say X 3 and the ambient explorations of the Erasure album. Regardless of my thoughts on this album, I am thrilled that Vince and Andy continue to make music and tour the US.

Highlights of this release for me are Storm In A Teacup, Fly Away and When A Lover Leaves You.

4 out of 5 stars Great Effort for the old guys.......2007-07-06

Light at the End of the WOrld is a very, very admirable effort from the Erasure boys. It is very much in the vein of some of their earlier efforts and more upbeat and dancey than recent offerings from the kings (queens?) of europop.

THe single, I could Fall in Love is just stunning in its overproduced, electronic whirlwhind sound and feel. YOu can't sit still when it plays. Several other tracks have "potential hit" markend on them as well...Sunday Girl for instance.

If you loved older Erasure albums, but have been bored by the newer, softer sounds, this is your chance to have some fun with the boys Clarke and Bell once again.

Paul Van Dyk's pop sense dominates Reflections, giving his squeaky-clean progressive trance a catchy, yet disposable weightlessness. As a DJ, Van Dyk is beyond human, existing in that rarefied "superstar DJ" realm filled with exotic locales and sweat-soaked masses of young, beautiful fans. But on record, his reputation as a master spinner takes a backseat to his songwriting/production work. Even 2001's The Politics of Dancing, billed as the DJ's first proper mix record, was given a dollop of post-production gloss. Too often, there's a feeling something is missing, that blood and sweat has been replaced with something cold and muted. With a variety of guest vocalists on hand, Reflections comes close to a proper "crossover" record without taking the verse-chorus-verse plunge, and this actually gives it some heart. Jan Johnston's cheerful mantra on "Like a Friend," for instance, makes for a lovely bounce, like a lullaby with a beat. More often though, the ear drifts into a nostalgic desire for early mornings spent in dark clubs, listening to Van Dyk spin music with a little more meat on its bones. --Matthew Cooke

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A decent trance CD.......2006-11-02

I never really got into the electronic scene until a few months ago, but I started with some hard stuff, then decided to get some trance. This was one of my first Trance albums, and it's a decent CD.

One thing I can say for certain is that most of the good music can be found in the first half of the album. All the music (minus Like a Friend) on the first half is very well produced and the vocals and the music were mixed brilliantly. That being said, after track 8, Never Forget, the mix between vocals and music doesn't seem natural and didn't feel as lovely as the beginning of the cd did.

One of my favorite tracks is Time of Our Lives, which is a slightly harder trance song, but the construction of the song and the feeling brought through the beat really makes me happy. One of my least favorite tracks is the next song Like a Friend. In this song, it doesn't feel that the music flowed with the vocals at all, which didn't feel like it belonged on the record alongside the other songs.

5 out of 5 stars Shows you what we knew............2006-03-27

OK, I admit it, I'm a huge PVD fan since 2001 and I own most of his CDs. When this one came out I had such a totally different expectation that I was offended with its departure from Paul's usual style. POD-1 and "Out there and Back" were soooo different than this. When I heard snippets of "Reflections" on the Amazon site, I regretfully decided it wasn't for me and moved on.

Fast forward to today....I just decided to give "Reflections" a second chance after seeing the special 2-CD edition in a store on sale. Well, unbelievably, I was not disappointed at all. I have decided that this CD was ahead of its time because it does not sound at all outrageous or lame to me now, especially after hearing Paul's "Politics of Dancing 2" and some other artists' newer stuff. It is not uncommon for popular musical artists to want to branch out, and even when I felt disappointed in this music I didn't anticipate that PVD was going to hell in a handbasket, just that he was going to attempt some different sounds. Oakenfold did it successfully, so why shouldn't PVD? PVD is still making music in his signature style, so what's the big deal if he ventures into other sounds once in a while? Also, I have to hand it to him that he can grow and evolve and still produce what I consider great music.

I think it is the mark of a true fan to appreciate all the styles of a truly great artist, and to be able to evolve with them into a more mature and modern sound. To be hung up on only one type of sound that existed circa 1999 and trash everything else an artist comes out with even if it is good (like this CD is, or obviously it wouldn't have garnered a Grammy nomination) is to be a person who is stuck in a musical rut and refuses to come out! Expand your horizons, you may be surprised at how your feelings may change after giving this CD another chance and listening it for more than a few times.

4 out of 5 stars PVD, true maestro in the DJ world!.......2006-03-09

This was my first serious listen to PVD's work, and I gotta' say, I love it. In general, I'm a big fan of DJ-styled electronica (Tiesto, BT, Sasha, etc.) and this album ranks up there with the best. Love the vocals by Jan Johnston. My favorite track of the album is opening one, "Crush", although I also love "Reflections" and "Buenaventura".

5 out of 5 stars Simply a great album.......2005-08-18

Well for FOOLS who don't understand this Godfather i'll tell ya.

Paul Van Dyk has serious emotional beats that makes you cry, or Reminds you of your own life.

He has won many awards in his hometown in Berlin, other german cities and around the world.(Don't belive me go to PvD's website.)
Reflections almost won a grammy but got beaten by Basement Jaxx's "Kish Kash" but is still good.

Reflections, Connected and Nothing but You are the singles that I enjoy.

Worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars great album.......2005-05-20

well everyone knows by now that reviews mean jack. Here is another fine example. Get this album because Van Dyk has made a turn for the better. No more repetitive beats. Its a new era and a new Van Dyk much welcomed. Obviously if you like the trance from 99 then your time is up. Stop listening to music. But if you like the new style pick this one up. it will not disappoint.

4 out of 5 stars Another great USA single edition.......2007-07-26

Andy & Vince are back in action with ICFILWY, good mixes (especially the radio edit of Jeremy Wheatley) and a good b-side. You won't be dissapointed with this cd-single!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Happy Uptempo Song........2007-07-03

I could dance all night with this song. Pure Erasure. Get it if you have not own this one. Remixes are great.

5 out of 5 stars the beats keep goin'.......2007-06-12

Lots of value here. Great, upbeat and addictive song offered in various incarnations to satisfy your individual tastes. Erasure maintains their finger on the pulse of what sounds really good and keeps the feet tapping. They've quite simply mastered the art of the perfect electro-pop song, as evidenced by this savory morsel of a single.

5 out of 5 stars Great single!.......2007-05-12

I love the new song! The mixes are just as good, if not a little better than the album version. The album mix is pure classic Erasure stuff, and if you love Erasure you will be so glad! I am eagerly awaiting the new full length cd in May!

5 out of 5 stars They've Still Got It............2007-05-10

What can I say? "I Could Fall in Love With You" is the kind of giddy, up-beat, care-free music that caused me to fall in love with the music of Erasure 20 years ago. But the really cool part is that the technical quality of this new single is, as usual, slightly ahead of contemporary. Electronica has come along way since "Speak and Spell" and "Wonderland", and with the notable exception of "Loveboat", Vince has always been ahead of the rest. Furthermore, in my humble opinion, Andy's vocals have never been more energetic. I'm counting the days until I receive the complete album, and I'm looking forward to more remixes.

Kristin Chenoweth won a Tony for the supporting role of Sally Brown in the 1999 revival of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, made a memorably vampy Lily in the 1999 television film of Annie, and had an NBC sitcom created for her, Kristin! Now she grabs the spotlight in Let Yourself Go, her first solo recording. She mixes torchy standards ("My Funny Valentine," "How Long Has This Been Going On?") with Faith Prince-style sauciness ("If"), gets to show off her operatic and scat chops in the miniplay "The Girl in 14G," and shares a light duet with Jason Alexander (reviving his musical theater career post-Seinfeld). Perhaps her "Stranger Here Myself" isn't the weightiest you've ever heard, but this is an enjoyable album with a good deal of old-fashioned class, expertly accompanied by Rob Fisher and the Coffee Club Orchestra. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars One of the best ever!.......2007-04-24

Do I mean the best album or the best singer? You are correct if you said both! I saw Kristin Chenoweth on a PBS show "Broadway's Best at the Pops," (though it was not the first time I had heard her) and decided to check out the offerings here. This is a collection of the kind of music and performances I love. She has a great range, a precise pitch, and a great style that is at the same time true to the music and to herself. In an era when singers try to outdo each other re-interpreting the composer's original work, not usually with great success, she is a blessing!

    5 out of 5 stars Kristen Chenowith.......2007-02-26

I bought this CD for the Girl in 14G. Yes, it's that good...

4 out of 5 stars Has its moments.......2007-02-19

After watching Candide endlessly and going to see Ms. Chenoweth in The Apple Tree, I was hungry for something more portable to listen to. At times this fits the bill, but what surprised me the most is how thin her voice comes across on this recording. Perhaps it was the joy of seeing her live that has ruined this listener; perhaps I need to upgrade my aging music system. Then again, maybe the recording is just not as good as Ms. C singing Bernstein or as good as staring at Ms. C command a Broadway stage.

    4 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-01-19

I truly enjoy listening to this CD. Kristin Chenoweth's vocal style and abilities are very well-matched to the songs selected for this album. If you enjoy classic, older-style Broadway/popular tunes, I would highly recommend this CD. Ms. Chenoweth has a bright, expressive voice and does a fantastic job with this material.

As with any full-length CD, there are a couple of songs I am not as crazy about, but that has to do with the songs themselves, not Ms. Chenoweth's vocal performance. Overall, I love this album and have listened to it several times now, since receiving it as a Christmas gift last month.

5 out of 5 stars This woman has what it takes, and then some..........2007-01-12

Kristin Chenoweth brings new life to some timeless Broadways tunes while introducing a few wonderful new ones. This high pitched vocal goddess effortlessly provides for a nearly flawless and easy listening experience. I definitly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys jazz vocals, showtunes, or just a new spin on some old classics.

5 out of 5 stars The mix that got me into trance, still the best........2007-07-15

I don't know why there are so many bad reviews for this mix, this cd just proves why PVD remains number one dj in the world. Compared to all the other cd's and thousands of trance songs i have, Disc one really stands out as the best melodic trance mix of all time, even to today. "Closer" and "Someday" never get old (I thinks its actually better he took the chorus out of "Closer"), and this whole mix is very uplifting and energetic. Cd two could be better, its not very fluent, but the song selection is great in my opinion. The mixing could be a bit better overall, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying it; some of the mixing is actually really catchy (The beginning of "Tangerine" and the last minute of "The Other Side" leading into "Second Day" is flawless). As PVD said, I think he did a good job picking the songs he felt were gonna be hits and mixing them around, even though they are two years old. If you like the samples that you can hear when looking at the album, you should buy this album regardless of what reviewers say (thats what i did, and its my favorite still). Really anyone who likes trance should get this.

2 out of 5 stars Break Out Your Glowsticks and Lollypops.......2007-07-09

You think that the passing of four years would have a world-class DJ evolving? Even a little? Well, think again. The Politics of Dancing, Vol. 1 was released in 2001, and this second volume demonstrates no clear progression in Paul Van Dyk as a DJ. He still choses to feature as many short anthem tracks as possible on each disc with the ever present "bubblegum" trance overtones. Conjures up images of a time when it was cool to wave glowsticks around at a club or rave.

Paul Van Dyk is great spinning live, but the majority of his commercial compilations leave a lot to be desired.

    Both discs get 2/5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Music to interpretive dance to.......2007-06-30

The only dancing this inspires me to do is dance over to my stereo to put in a different CD. I stopped listening to him after Out There and Back and I see that haven't missed much in the last several years. I admit there might be a couple of toe-tappers in here somewhere but I've lost my patience, you're better off buying something...I don't know, good, like Markus Schulz's Miami '06 or anything put out by Armin van Buuren in the last two years. Into the trash with you! Goodbye five dollars.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING!! THIS IS PROGRESSIVE HOUSE!!!!!.......2007-03-10

5 out of 5 stars Politics of dancing 2.......2007-03-05

    5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2006-05-24

An aggressive, infectious dance album that forces me to stand up and move while listening to it. It has aged wonderfully! Heck, it could've been released yesterday and be hailed as an instant classic. "Voodoo People" is probably the most memorable track, but "Their Law" and "Poison" are just as good in my opinion. This is a 10!

    5 out of 5 stars 'It's like being in a fight'.......2006-02-26

I 've been a prodigy fan since day one and I can clearly remember the first time I listened to this album. To be honest, at first I wasn't too sure, after all my love of the prodigy was based on the old skool breakbeat of 'Experience' (another 5 star album) and I was only 15. But, as I listened to it more I began to realise just what a monumentous achievement it was. This album gets better with time, and for electronic music, that is very rare indeed. Jilted was nominated for the mercury music prize on its release in '94. Jilted is Liams piéce de resistance, he is yet to produce anything remotely as good as this album. Its dark, its edgy, its loud and its agressive and thats what the prodigy is about. The intro cheekily signaled Liams intention to stay underground and then bursts straight in to the fat chunky beats and breaking glass of Break and Enter, pure class. Everything is perfect, the production, the samples, the 'fists in the air' beats. Its a real anti establishment record. Stick it on, crank up the bass and try and hear all the layers of madness that Liam lovingly crafted onto this record. An audio catharsis, buy it.

5 out of 5 stars The 'Reign In Blood' of dance music.......2006-02-12

A lot has changed between 'The Experience' and this album, their debut was poppy, easy-listening and somewhat normal techno. I see it as their most danceable act with cheap ideas who seemed to work out very well. It was easy to see they were skilled, but could we expect the next album would sound like THIS?! It's much tougher, heavier, it's more alternative and at the same time extremely ambitious! Everyone should have heard Voodoo people or No Good on a party once in their life. The first mentioned has a lot of guitarparts with some kind of subtile western atmosphere and was together with 'one love' used for the 'Hackers'OST. The second has a vocal sample of Kelly Charles. Also the alternative rockscene is very charmed by the darker classics such as 'their law' and 'poison'. Overall I think everyone with a passion for danceable music should enjoy this: Horrifying babycrying, formule 1 races, shredding guitars, flute solos, extra-terrestrial life, shattered glass and beauty it's all here!

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting and energetic rave music - it's not for everyone, but rave and electronic fans will love it!.......2005-12-29

"Music For The Jilted Generation" may have more interesting songs musically, but "The Fat Of The Land" is completely made up of great sounding songs. The problem with "Music" is that it starts off incredibly well and then starts to get uneven. What I mean by that is that the first songs are so good and instantly catchy that they basically overshadow the rest of the album - the rest is good, don't get me wrong, but it will probably take you a while to like the rest (they'll grow on you). As opposed to "The Fat Of The Land", "Music" is more interesting than it is fun. The songs are fun, yes, but they aren't trying as hard to be as memorable or as catchy as anything on "The Fat Of The Land" - you're going to be more interested in the intricacies of the songs I bet. This approach may not be for everyone (I bought the album expecting more songs like "Firestarter" and "Breathe", for instance), but rave fans and those who truly appreciate music will love it. Also, "Their Law", "Break & Enter", "Voodoo People", "Speedway" and "Poison" are all very fun and interesting rave songs that alone satisfy the purchase of this CD, but I'm sure you'll come to like the rest in time. I'd highly recommend this for rave and techno fans, but I'm not sure whether other genre fans will like it.

    Highlights include:
    "Break & Enter"
    "Their Law"
    "Voodoo People"
    "Speedway"
    "Poison"
    the rest grow on you

5 out of 5 stars cool dance album.......2007-05-31

it took me some time to look for this cd and i was lucky to find it on amazon. g8 music for dance music lovers. must have item .

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-01-09

This CD is worth it just for the first track "Sandstorm." I find this song compels me dance. When I play the CD, I always seem to put this song on repeat, so I haven't really experienced the other songs, so I can't really say much about them. All I know is that first song makes me feel alive, happy, in touch with the world, like tackling any project, and dancing. Totally worth it!

4 out of 5 stars Darude "Before the Storm" Audio CD review.......2006-07-30

If you are a fan of trance music, you will like this album. If you like hard beats against a hypnotic background, vibrating with melodies and sounds, you will like this album.
Darude's "Before the Storm" includes the worldwide favorite, 'Sandstorm', often played at sports events, and even featured on DDRMAX, the video game.
If you do not like extremely repetitive music, you may not like this album. Although most of the songs repeat melodies and sounds, Darude's music stirs excitement in the listener. It's great for workouts, dances, running, or even background music.

    3 out of 5 stars overall good.......2006-05-14

Good songs. My one complaint is the repetitiveness of the songs, not much in terms of variety throughout the c.d. Eh, I guess though, it's techno, that's to be expected.
