Good, but not great.......2006-11-10

When I first heard this album, that's all there was back in the mid-seventies, I was blown away by the lyrics and music. It touched me when I was in high school. Now, however, I find it loud, tinney, and the words do not bring back that "AWE" I felt when I used to listen to it...repeatedly. I guess it's true, "You can't go home again". The CD was received quickly and in perfect shape. Once again, Amazon, I keep coming back to the best entertainment site I have encountered on the net.

I remember every Saturday morning this album would be playing when I woke up. It was one of my father's favorite albums. The music if you really listen to it puts you in another state of mind. For me it is those Saturday mornings. The LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE is a fanatastic album.My only problem is that it ends to quickly.

Fair Early Mangione Recording!!!!!!!.......2004-06-23

This album was recorded right after he got the idea to form a big jazz orchestra, while at Eastan School Of Music and drawn to be bop, rather than orchestral jazz. He was just starting out, but had some classics like Hill Where The Lord HIdes and Freddie's Walkin. Unfortunately, they don't appear here. But Legend OF The One Eyed Sailor and Land Of Make Believe do. They're the only good tracks on this cd. The others are a waste, and this is from a true Mangione fan. Chuck's albums didn't start to get good until around 1975. Alive was his only good early album. His early albums are all Live, which I hate, and are very experimental. I do enjoy listening to this album, dont get me wrong. But I'd rather be listening to something else!

Travel back in time to an era when songs were created to enjoy like a rich desert that your mom would make. Howard Keel and his various duet partners have done just this! This CD has a wonderful selection from the great musicals of the 1950's and makes you smile....sigh....and seek to hear them again and again. I would encourage you to add this to your collection as I have. I've even shared it with many of my friends who have come back with the same remarks of great music from one of the great singers of our recent past.

A Unique Original Ember Album with a Number of Highly Collectable Bonus Tracks. Nine of the Recordings Are Taken from Original Piano Rolls While Three Tracks Feature a Rehearsal for the 'Strike Up the Band' Show in 1929.

Poorly edited CD; dishonest?.......2001-08-26

Very poorly-edited CD; I can't believe that it was "Released by arrangement with the Gerorge Gershwin Estate", as the booklet states. Consider the following: Upon playing the CD for the first time, I noticed that Track 4, "Grievin' For You" was actually was the same as track 11, "Make Believe". Naturally, I was quite surprised that this error wasn't caught pre-release. I was also disappointed, since I was looking forward to hearing "Grievin' for you". Also, in the booklet it states that track 14, "An American in Paris", was recorded in 1928. I was hoping to hear a historical recording when in fact the track contains a stereo recording of the piece, and is thus in all likelihood a post-1957 recording. I wrote to the publisher of the CD, TKOMagnum, but have not received a response. Let the buyer beware!

The most interesting parts of this recording are the 4 short piano roll recordings of Gershwin playing songs of other composers. These demonstrate the "song-plugger" style of playing from about 1917-1927, with its stride bass, rolled chords and very full texture. There are also 2 Nonesuch Piano Roll recordings by Gershwin with material not duplicated here, so if you like these, I recommend them as well.

Straight Off the Old Player Piano Roll!.......2003-02-27

Buyer beware. I purchased the CD anticipating interpretive versions of his most famous pieces played by Gershwin himself. But instead, the CD consists of reproduced player piano rolls--very mechanical, no change in tempo, and just plain irritating to listen to, after the novelty of the first track wears off. I looked back at the product detail to see if I had missed the mention of "player piano versions", but found none. Big disappointment.
