About the Artist
Mix Lenny Kravitz edge with the vulnerability of Billie Holiday and throw in a pinch of D'Angelo's irreverence and you've come close to what Elena Joyner has evolved into at the tender age of nineteen.

EJ has had a life filled with many blessings; the most fulfilling of which has been the gift of song. She was driven by her passion to sing the songs she penned since the age of five.

What is singular and special about EJ is her ability to stay true to herself through all of her astonishing transformations. It is this essence that captures your undivided attention. EJ takes the listener on a roller coaster of sounds and emotions with her songs. She fuses funk with hip-hop and pop without sacrificing the integrity of the individual genre. The result is an uplifting fun, melodic, raw, powerful, emotional and experimental exploration. As a vocalist, songwriter, musician and that rare breed of performer who puts something essential of herself into every note and each word she sings, EJ is an artist whose life is reflected in the style and substance of her music.

We have been here before on the cusp of discovery, the crux of delight, and the crucible where true artistry and mass appeal entwine. ¨ Keep a close watch and stay tuned. This is a very special work in progress…

Product Description
Like Macy Gray, Erykah Badu and Kelis, 19 year old, Elena Joyner has the honesty and flair of a full-grown woman--a rarity in the world of youthful Pop & R&B princesses. Among the most talented singers in popular R&B today, Joyner is part of a neo-soul movement that includes artists like Gray, Jill Scott, Amel Larrieux and the original Erica Badu. Joyner is wortqh hearing not just for her big, big candy-coated voice, but also for her gutsy, honest approach to a genre that often drowns in artifice. With her first single and self titled debut full-length on the way, Joyner approaches personal issues with a subtlety seldom found in the R&B scene.

On "You Used To Like When I" she criticizes her man for suggesting a threesome and becoming insecure when she enjoys it (without getting dogmatic) over an addictive drumbeat. Her voice never overwhelms her down-tempo arrangements: she uses it to squeeze more life into them.

Have to be honest. I've got dozens of Broadway musical recordings, along with loads of 'em by lounge-singers and ballad performers. The performances here are, for the most part, nothing special; in fact, most of the male voices are kind of "stinky." Sorry, guys. Singer, Steve Ross ("I Have Dreamed"), does have a very unusual voice, I'll give him that. But, but, but........the only male singer (Patrick Quinn) placed in the only romantic duet ("People Will Say We're In Love") has a voice much more suited to Broadway comedic roles---nothing romantic-sounding about it.

The girls come off better. Maureen McG. is her reliable self, and Judy K. and Debbie G. are their normal and known selves.

In the end, I recommend saving your money for better done songs from Broadway.

5 out of 5 stars A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

5 out of 5 stars an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31

Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

5 out of 5 stars First Rate Light Music.......2004-08-31

Dacades ago on FM radio I heard a medium tempo version of "Would You Like to Take a Walk?" that knocked my socks off. Simply beautiful. It took me this long to find out that it was Robert Farnon's Orchestra that performed that gem! And now, not only do I finally have it, I have also discovered more of Mr. Farnon's wonderful repertoire on these two albums.

This may be considered "Light Music" but it is certainly not boring. There are uptempo romps like "Yes, we have no Bananas" and "Blue Skys" as well as near classical beauties like "Can I Forget You?" and "Down By the River." Farnon takes full advantage of his rather sizeable orchestra which consists of strings, brass, reeds, percussion, rhythm and harp.

The cd is a nice production as well with interesting liner notes about Robert Farnon and the music per se. There are reproductions of the original album covers released both in the UK and U.S. There are also track times and composer listings, but, sadly, no mention of the orchestra members other than specific soloists. Originally the sound quality, even in 1953 and 1954 when these albums were recorded, was excellent. Fifty years has taken some of the edge off of that sound from the master tapes, but it is still very good.

It's easy for me to recommend this cd and I will be forever grateful to Amazon for giving me the resources to finally track down Farnon and his beautiful arrangement and performance of "Would You Like to Take a Walk?"

One of the best CDs I've bought in years! Granted, I'm a bit Lerner-biased having played Col. Pickering in My Fair Lady before...and I just love his stuff anyways -- but nonetheless this CD is a GREAT buy! I found it in a store somewhere about 2-3 months ago, and I don't think it's left my CD player since. Domingo's occasional appearances add SUCH classy humor that I just roll over laughing everytime he sings! Granted, one must be at least fairly familiar with the story and flow of My Fair Lady to get all the jokes, but even without that, it's still a series of stellar performances. Buy this CD!

This is great quality POP music. It has the qualities that make music fun. A catchy hook, great rendition and an infectious beat. It definitely has the makings of a Madonna "Like A Virgin." By any stretch of the imagination "That Ain't Bad.." So for all you POP haters out there... GET A LIFE! POP LIVES! Thanks WIFX for taking a chance and playing real independent music.

What an awesome song and a simply awesome talent. It reminds me of the days when music was fun and just simply enjoyable. It is a refreshing change from the "Back that thang up" and the "You Make Me Crazy" songs that are on our airways today. Radio, pick this one up! It is SLAMMING!
