Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars This CD Speaks Life!.......2007-04-25

I purchased this CD a month ago when I needed a word of encouragement. I believe this CD not only provided encouragement, but it Restored my joy, peace, and optimism. Bishop Morton is definitely a blessing and the collaborations are exceptional. I promise everyone that they will not be dissappointed with this CD and there isn't one song on this CD that I would refuse to hear.

4 out of 5 stars Inspirational and uplifting Music.......2007-04-13

The title song is excellent and most of the other songs are done well. I am partial to gospel music that has a fast pace so about 1/2 of the CD is about all I listen to. I like the beginning and then I skip to the songs at the end. Over all I give it a 3.5

4 out of 5 stars Bishop Morton is Back and is GREAT.......2007-03-09

This CD is great. I love the testimonials and he has a great partner in Kurt Carr. The two make great music. A must buy

5 out of 5 stars Yes! We are Still Standing!.......2007-02-16

"Still Standing" CD touched my heart and I realized everyone went through Hurricanes Katrina/Rita. Bishop Paul S. Morton and Minister Kurt Carr received a "Special Blessing" from God. The music is "OUTSTANDING"! This CD is a Blessing to the Whole World.

5 out of 5 stars Praise God for His RESTORING POWER!!!!.......2007-02-09

Hallelujah (repeatedly)is all i can say!!! I don't know what made me even purchase this cd, but i am so glad i did. I had just recovered from a bout of sickness in my body and can totally relate to this ENTIRE CD. If you have been through ANYTHING, and we all have, this cd will show and remind you of Gods power. After Bishop suffered at the hands of hurricane Katrina, he came out with this cd and declared "I'm Still Standing". There are so many wonderful songs on this cd and it really is hard to single out one good one, but there is this one song that brings me to tears everytime i hear it. It say's that "I never want to let You down, no more"... God is FAITHFUL all the time and i thank Him for His faithfulness...i really, never want to let Him down...i feel like i am rambling now...just buy the cd, there are guaranteed blessings in store for you, as well as restoration, encouragement and messages on how to "stand in the midst"...but you have to know that "storms come to make us strong"!!!! Be blessed!

5 out of 5 stars A classic next to Soul Food.......2006-10-26

Standout tracks: THE EXPERIENCE, BLACK ICE(Andre killed it!), FLY AWAY(Ceelo is a trip),THE DAMN, GHETTO-OLOGY, DISTANT WILDERNESS, GREENY GREEN, SEE YOU WHEN I SEE YOU, BEAUTIFUL SKIN, THEY DONT DANCE NO MO, JUST ABOUT OVER, I REFUSE LIMITATION, STILL STANDING(great ending to a great album). Filler:None. Bottom Line: Goodie Mob never gets the credit they deserve for what they bought to the rap game(socially and politically conscious records). While other rappers from the south follow the trends set by NWA(after Ice Cube left them) Goodie Mob was talking about s**t of importance. Still Standing stands out as a classic that gave me a geniune respect for a group that could have gone out like the rest of them. Every other song has a gem in them plus the production is super. Unfortunately this is the last album they made of this nature before they went through their World Party phase.

5 out of 5 stars ~Black Ice~.......2006-10-16

Still Standing is another must have record from the GOODIE MOB. All the MC's bring great flows and tons of flavor to each song. From a production stand-point, they continue to bring the sound that we love them for. Don't believe me??? Buy it, you'll see...

Peace!

5 out of 5 stars Standing Strong.......2005-07-06

Goodie's sophmore release that didn't fall short of Soul Food's success with another classic. Still Standing has a message within and still remain street without becoming watered down. Even with the production debut of members Cee-Lo on "Ghetto-ology" featuring Cheifton and T-Mo on "Greeny Green" featuring Witchdoctor they still came out with a southern sound that cannot be duplicated. As most of the production was held down by Organized Noize and Mr. DJ they overlayered their beats with live instruments to give it a more fuller effect. In a genre that degrades women there's upliftment and healing in "Beautiful Skin" with the message of "...you gotta respect yourself before I can..." "See You When I See You" displays their talents in this almost interlude as they get the crowd involved. This lp should be a prerequesite for any rapper/emcee entering the game.

Very solid nine song LP in a dark period
for great Alternative-County-Christian-
Metal band from NashVegas, Tn. Jason
solo is a treat as well. Pick up on this,
Thunder and Fire, Essential J& S and ALL
Jason solo LPs!

5 out of 5 stars Good things come to those who wait - Yeehawwww!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-10-21

Finally, finally this classic Jason and The Nashville Scorchers album is available again on CD (out 'o print copies of the CD have been fetching big dollars on ebay for years). This is one of my favorite Jason CD's - and the best of their later releases. The bonus tracks are kind of a throw away, if'n you ask me, but that don't take nuthin' away from the greatness of "My Heart Still Stands," "Shotgun Blues" and "Ghost Town," among others.

Relive the glory days of the short-lived cow punk movement (these guys are not really cow punk but somehow they got lumped in with bands like Blood on the Saddle, Tex & the Horseheads, and Rank & File, to name a few) and buy this CD. This music stills sounds fresh as the morning dew on Jason's pig farm even after all these years.

4 out of 5 stars Still wonderful.......2002-10-12

I sympathize with the "No guitar solo" reviewer, & understand why someone so personally influenced by J & S would be so disappointed with this re-release. But I come from a more objective perspective, having never heard "Still Standing" before now. I was turned on to the group two decades ago by "Fervor," and discovering this piece of their journey now is like a great goldmine. "Still Standing" is full of wonderful songs, and best of all, that fiery, unique J & S sound. So don't pass it up. Not only a glimpse into the band's evolution, but a glimpse into a period of sonic joy, exuberance, and "fervor" that otherwise will never be recaptured.

1 out of 5 stars No guitar solo on Golden Ball & Chain?!.......2002-09-24

A lot of hard core Scorchers fans have been waiting forever for Still Standing to be re-released. Cd copys of the original are very hard to find. The extra cuts are always something to look forward to. So anyway I pop the cd in the player, start getting into Golden Ball & Chain and it's sounds like something's missing. I go back and listen again, and the guitar solo is gone!... As a Scorchers fan from almost the very beginning and a musician, that guitar solo is one of those solos that made me want to play guitar. Jason & The Scorchers are one of those bands that never really "made it" as far as mainstream music goes and this record was released, I'm sure, to please the long time devoted fans who bought the vynil or cassette versions before cds were common. So for the record company to
edit out that solo is a big disservice and a major letdown to any Scorchers fan. I think Capitol should pull the cd's and re-re-release it with the solo back in the song where it should be or refund peoples' money. What a dissappointment.

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Moved to tears.......2004-03-18

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

5 out of 5 stars Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

5 out of 5 stars Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02

This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

Album Description

The first single from Jewel's fourth album, '0304'. 'Intuition' finds the singer-songwriter experimenting with new & exciting styles, clearly influenced by modern dance beats & rhythms, while managing to eloquently balance the reflective 'roots' style that has separated her from others throughout her career. Backed with the non-LP track, 'Standing Tall' (live acoustic version recorded 2002). Atlantic. 2003.

5 out of 5 stars THE SEXY JEWEL CAPTURES IN SONG.......2004-03-14

Jewel has aways interested me with her poems and song capabilities. I enjoyed her song Intuition when I first heard back in July/August 2003. Just before going over to Iraq for 7 months, then I saw her video on the same song and she was very sexy. When on the ship I went to music.com and heard Standing Still on air for the first time, I knew the C.D. I had brought was good. So I took it to the ship with me and played it. It was unsual of Jewel to be so blunt and forward with her songs I really enjoyed hearing Jewel sing. It made being on the ship bearable. I hope she never gives up on her passion and dreams. God Bless her and her band.

4 out of 5 stars Is she trying something different? Shame on her!.......2003-09-17

Okay, okay, enough with the conspicuous bashing of Jewel. It's unnecessary and laugh-out-funny. Here we have Christina Aguilara claiming to be all "grown up" now by exposing everything in a vulgar fashion, as seen on her well-put "Dirty" video, but when Jewel decides to uphold the standard of dance music by experimenting and having FUN, she's criticized for trying to be the next Britney Spears? A lot of people seemed to really enjoy the song "Intuition" until they realized it was by Jewel and I think it's sad how everyone's claiming her as a "sell-out". What does that word mean anyway? I don't know about you but my taste in music is ever-changing so, if I were a musician, my sound and style would be altering constantly - or rather, expanding. Sometimes an artist chooses to step in a different direction, also depending heavily on the mood of their current lifestyle (family, love, ect.), and it either works or it doesn't. In this case I have mixed emotions (I've never been a huge fan of Jewel's work to begin with) but I give her props for shedding some uninhibited light on her usual seriousness and basking in the glow of her happiness. She's still writing clever, poetic lyrics, so why can't the lady be smart and sexy at the same time? She may be lost to her old conservative ways but so what! At least she's dressing in a tasteful manner and, in my opinion, the transaction to dance has been pretty successful.

If your able to embrace the change than good for you! But if not, well, let her be and move on with your life.

3 out of 5 stars a newer draft of my previous review.......2003-08-15

Ok so I know I completely bashed Jewel's new single in my previous review, but I guess this song just takes a while getting used to.It's still no masterpiece, but it's a well-written piece of pop with a driving beat and electrifying chorus.I wasn't some big fan of Jewel back when she was still an artist, so it's not that big of a deal for me that she went from artist to pop tart.Anyways, it's not like she'll ever write another song that even compares to Foolish Games (and I mean the album acoustic version, not the poppy single version of it).Anyway, it's a fun song, nothing more. But I have to say, it really grew on me.

5 out of 5 stars Jewel, my hero.......2003-06-26

I thought that u were very good in the song intuition and that u should not of split bussiness with ur mom because i think that intuition would of been really good with ur mom singing in the back round so any ways my grandma used to clean ur guys' house for u and I thought that she did something very nice for u and if u would be so kind in doing something nice for her and giving her backstage passes (4) than that would be so great she is like ur #1 fan she loves u and she would be so greatful her name is Fran Jensen. She lives in Valley Center in california. Thanx and lots of luv
ur #2 fan,

5 out of 5 stars The funky Jewel comes out.......2003-06-23

Before "Intuition", she always released wonderful music. But when I heard "Intuition", I was blown away! I never knew Jewel had that energy and sexuality in her. Not to mention, her new musical direction continues her growth as an artist. This is one of those songs that you must krank up when you're listening to it in the car. It will give you a more-in-depth perspective. I can't wait to get her CD "0304" so I can see what more she has to offer, besides "Intuition". When I do, I'll write a review.

5 out of 5 stars Good Deal.......2006-07-27

For $20 you get tons of ska, and not just one kind (like rock-steady or skunk). Plus it is kinda of like a sampler to find out about bands you hadn't previously heard of. If you are tired of the same old ska, or if you want to find some new great band this , or like ska at all then buy this.

4 out of 5 stars Looking for good bands, here's the sampler.......2005-11-12

Megalith and Jump Up joined forces to compile this series. This should give anyone interested in 3rd Wave ska an idea of what the sound is all about. You may not hear them on the radio anymore (most of them not at all), but you'll be briefed on 88 bands, whom you can look up anywhere. I got this collection when it first came out. There are several bands I wasn't familiar with and have since started collecting thier CDs.

This is NOT a collection of Rancid clones. There is a broad spectrum of styles on this album, from old-school to mento, gospel to ska-core, neo-cumbia psychobilly to rock-steady to dance hall. Yes, there ARE bands doing this, from the past ten years and many are roughing it out despite the lack of commercial popularity of ska. There are songs I don't like (the Mighty Mighty Boss Tones track on this album is probably the most boring of all), but there are songs that have replenished my faith in musicians my age. Yes, there is a market for this, and I'm part of that small demographic. Please keep going, guys.

5 out of 5 stars most amazing collection ever.......2005-03-01

This has got to be the best compilation ever created, of SKA or anything else. Every band in America (and the best from Canada too) are right here at your fingertips! I do a SKA show on the radio and I could fill my whole two hour block with this on shuffle and still please my audience 100%. Rock Steady SKA, SKA-punk, reggae jammin' SKA, Third Wave style, Second Wave style, even old school first wave sounding SKA, swinging SKA, acoustic SKA, one man band SKA, just plain SKA type SKA- you name the kind of SKA you like and it is in this collection. It is brilliant and incredibly low-priced. Please, help out the locals while sampling the mainstreamers at the same time, and check out this miraculous compilation of SKA music. It's a great price, and these bands need the money- so quit burning this stuff from your friends or wherever and help save SKA!

5 out of 5 stars Who says SKA is dead.......2003-09-16

In a world where the mainstream is [bad] and the radio is unlistenable, there is the sanctity of punk/ska/psycobilly/whatever. Usually, when people see SKA! written on my knuckles or hear me humming a trombone rythmn, i get the "What does ska mean? is it short for sk8?" i just shake my head and say the only thing i can. "well,it depends, sum 3rd wave is like punk w/trumpets. the traditional ska is from jamaica and 2tone is from england in the 80's." they stare and go "whatever". Is this whats happened to ska? i hope not, and this is the cd to bring it back. It showcases the BEST of todays 3rd wave ska, from the skacore,to ska punk, to the very traditional ska. its got stuff for every1, w/4 cds and the lowest track listing being 20. a MUST BUY. A MUST!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Start from track 4, then let 'er rip..........2007-03-08

The new material on this CD is not all that great with the exception of the slow version of "Float On." Now, that's the joint. But the rest is just mediocre. The old cuts bring back memories, "Ain't My Type Of Hype" from House Party (which is ridiculously left off the soundtrack). Who can forget the battle between Kid and Play and Sydney and Sharaine? Classic.

They did leave off "All In My Mind" and "Love Is For Suckers Like Me" but I guess they couldn't include them all. Track 14 could have been left off. It's just some guy cursing into the microphone about how fine Roxanne Shante was. The last track is a new recording of Cheryl Pepsii Riley's "Thanks For My Child" which she is definitely over-singing on. She turned it into a stage play performance and toward the end of the song, you really begin to tire of the unnecessary riffs. She is singing as if she's standing directly in front of Randy, Paula and Simon and in dire need of a recording contract. I can't understand why they just didn't include the original version. It is much better.

If you want a taste of the old and new Full Force this may be the CD for you. That slow version of "Float On" alone is worth purchasing this one. However, if you just want that straight up old school Full Force, you may want to go with their Greatest Hits CD.

2 out of 5 stars FULL FORCE was already tough, now they gangsta. WHY??????.......2004-10-10

Yeah, what a reunion album (not that F.F. ever broke up). It stinks. Mainly, the 1st 6 selections (which are the new songs) while they use real rappers to fill in what UTFO and ECROF used to do which makes the new songs even whacker.

Oh yeah,oh my God. If you can, find the clean version of this album. The profanity is ridicious (STAR and FUNKMASTER FLEX are the worst),never has FULL FORCE allowed so much cussin' on an album in the 80's (they saved that for their liner notes, seriously).

From 8 on,F.F. classics like "Alice,I Want You Just For Me","Temporary Love Thing","Ain't My Type Of Hype" and "Unselfish Lover" and classics written and produced for others like JAMES BROWN,CHERYL "PEPSII" RILEY,LISA LISA & CULT JAM,UTFO and 'N SYNC are the worthwhile listening tracks (even 'N SYNC,go figure).

If you want a good portion of the classics, buy AHEAD OF THEIR TIME,this is the new century and the new F.F. material 'ain't nothin' to F wit'. This gangsta trash "Ain't My Type Of Hype",dig?

3 out of 5 stars Full Force -.......2002-01-16

This album is worth it if you are a collector and want all of there albums ever made but I would wait on this one and buy the other greatest hits album put out on Thump Records. Much better........

2 out of 5 stars Very Dissapointed.......2001-08-04

Being a fan of Full Force from back in the day, I was very dissapointed with the new album. Over half of the album is either hits they did themselfs or produced. Except for Float on With Us, there is no reason to buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars FULL FORCE IS BACK!!.......2001-08-03

In actuality they never left. Once the force has been felt, it lives on indefinitely. You must marvel at FF's ability to adjust to the times and roll with the tragedies they have experienced and continue to slap the industry for trying to keep them down, they are most definitely Still Standin'!. Not many knew they aided Britney's climb as well as N'Sync and The Backstreet Boys. I rated Still Standin' a 5 mainly because the brothers are back and they gave me some of the classics that I only have on wax and my turntable is broke and I couldn't reminisce, but now I can! Let's talk about the new: Both the Float On cuts are hittin'. Leave it to FF to bring such a broad range of talent together. When you have Meth on the ruff cut and Montell on the smoove one, you can't miss. The force has not lost its touch for producing the beautiful ballad and proper storytelling. Sadly, the spare sound of the big drum, melodious keys and thumping bass must be found on the classics. Now for the old: FF has too many productions to try to include only 9 previous hits on the CD. Each one that is on it should have been included, although that was the first time I heard the Backstreet Boys' cut. As a true FF fan I have to demand a true greatest productions CD to include: United, Dream Believer, Unfaithful, Your Love Is So Def, Love Is For Suckers, Low Blow Brenda, Black Radio, ALL IN MY MIND, Friends B4 Lovers, Physical Commitment, Sharon, If It's Cool Witcha, God Will Fix It, Sugar On Top, Can You Feel The Beat, You'll Never Change, Naughty Girls, Let's Go-Go, Little Jackie, the UTFO joints, and yes even LaToya's Wicked Love (remix). For you true FF fans, you'll be glad to hear that they have maintained their sense of humor in their songs and the guest interludes entertain. It was good to hear another top FLYTE production team, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, show their respect and appreciation for these brothers' skills. Needless to say, a CD with all of the remixes and extended versions is a must. Their ability to funk up their own funk has always amazed me. All in all this is a very good CD and a MUST for your Full Force collection.

Spider John Koerner made his name in the '60s by picking out acoustic urban blues with the Minneapolis trio of Koerner, Ray, & Glover. He romps a little harder than usual on Running, Jumping, Standing Still, obviously grooving on the extra energy of pianist Willie Murphy. Koerner's folk roots get liberally sprinkled with ragtime, rock & roll, and barrelhouse boogie-woogie courtesy of Murphy's magic fingers. Murphy also sings lead on two tracks, including the long, jazzy piano workout "Old Brown Dog." Koerner and his booming guitar shine on the strutting "Red Palace," the low-key "I Ain't Blue," and the title track. -- Michael Ruby

5 out of 5 stars Classic, thankfully preserved from extinction.......2007-01-08

I really don't know how I found out about this record--maybe because it's similar to the more mainstream The Band, and definitely a roots-rock album from the birth of the genre. However I heard about it, I sure am glad, and thankful to the friend of mine who bought it for me out of the blue. It's a wild, hilarious affair without a dull moment and plenty of wicked honky tonk piano and some surprisingly effective songwriting. It's a bit difficult to get ahold of, but I think it's worth it--I've never heard a record that sounds quite like this one.

"Spider" John Koerner, erstwhile purveyor of blues to white folkies, sings most of the exuberant, humorous lead and plays some energetic, sloppy electric blues guitar. The bearded, old-prospector type, Willie Murphy, plays some ostensibly ridiculous honky tonk piano and sings some soulfully white harmony (and lead on a couple tracks). After a few listens, though, you'll see that his keyboard contributions transcend saloon leads, and venture into jazz, R&B, and blues territory, giving the album a really cosmopolitan feel.

The songwriting on this album is surprisingly good--tight and purposeful while at the same time loose and fun in delivery. The opener, "Red Palace," is one of the more progressive cuts, with a descending kazoo-like scat part, opening the party with fire and laughs, then giving way to a fuzzed-out, funky bass/guitar riff that Murphy solos over with reckless abandon. Not a bad beginning, if you ask me. "I Ain't Blue" is the first example of several great ballads on the album, proving Koerner is just as good an emotive singer as he is up-tempo hollerer. "Bill and Annie" ramps up the party again, with one of the best choruses on the album--"don't let the bastards wear you down/don't get hassled to a frazzle." "Old Brown Dog" features Murphy on lead vocals and features some adventurous jazz improv with a pretty cool acoustic bass line. Other highlights are "Running Jumping Standing Still" with its time shifts, the wit of "Magazine Lady" and the lazy closer, "Good Night," which features a reprise of the title track.

All in all, this album is a real ride--lots of clever lyrics that improve with repeated listens, great energy, cool old-time production with some tasteful horns in a few places, and a stylistic mishmash much in the spirit (if not the sound exactly) of The Band's best. I recommend this album to fans of folk as well as the different directions folk started to take when combined with rock (Byrds, '66 Dylan, The Band, etc.). It's sure to bend your genre horizons and help you have a great time as well. I think it's worth the somewhat high price it usually calls. Hope you enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Spider's Unbroken Web.......2006-11-03

Yes. This is a solid set and easy enough to access, and far cheaper, through the Red House Production/Distribution House. It's an album that is live and ready, transcends the era of its making, and worth the investment. And, in the reluctance of the Sweet Jane crew, to reissue the equally, if not nudgingly superior,'Music is Just a Buch of Notes', this will have to suffice as testament to the Murphy/Koerner chemistry. 'Stargeezer' gave us some of, M.I.J.B.N's songs, with a fuller deck of hands, but not quite the wackiness. If you liked 'Stargeezer', write to Sweet Jane and urge re-ssue of the aforementioned. Elsewhere I've noted the relaxed and joyous variety that exudes from their relationship, and in passing, recommended the kindred spirit, if not musicality, of The Gourds.

5 out of 5 stars Constantly on the edge of spinning out of control.......2006-03-23

Perfect blend of old-timey country blues, rootsy rock, and pop. Raucous, carefree jug music for a roadhouse; carnival music for heavy hippies. Like the Band if it were constantly on the edge of spinning out of control. Even through the pops and scracthes of the LP I bought in the 1960s, it remains on my All-Time Top-10 List. To this day, still all select and fresh. Stand-outs: Magazine lady, F: Sometimes I can't help myself. [45:13]

4 out of 5 stars I don't own the CD.......2005-11-16

I bought the LP in 1969, and it's been following me around the country ever since. Rough around the edges, to be sure, but a fun record. I put it on the turntable (!) and listened to it tonight, and that's the way to listen to it. Don't spend a fortune on the CD. Find someone who bought the LP in 1969, stop by their place with some beer, and listen to it with the pops and scratches included.

5 out of 5 stars Running Jumping Standing Still.......2005-06-15

I have recorded and released more than 18 albums myself. This is one of my all time favorites. Do yourself a favor and buy one!!
