Who We Are is another set of rousing anthems from this reflective trio. On their fourth full-length, the Los Angeles three-piece sets the template for a harder-rocking effort with dynamic opener "Disarray," in which singer/guitarist Jason Wade admits he doesn't know where he's going, but "wouldn't have it any other way." The band rocks even harder on album highlight "The Joke," a song inspired by a real-life suicide. It's a risk that pays off, although the lyrics almost make the subject seem more defiant than regretful. Throughout the record, Rick Woolstenhulme's drums sound like they're cranked up to 11--not that there's anything wrong with that (Bryce Soderberg holds his own on bass). In other words, the music isn't shy (or subtle), but Wade's words read more like questions than answers. Granted, closing number "Storm," with Rocco DeLuca on organ, brings things to a gentle close, but most tracks follow in the over-sized footsteps of post-grunge precursors, like Live and Stone Temple Pilots. Then again, as Abigail Van Buren used to say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." If Lifehouse ever find what they're looking for, to paraphrase yet another sage, they may as well pack it in. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Album Description

Lifehouse is singer-guitarist Jason Wade, drummer Rick Woolstenhulme and bassist-singer Bryce Soderberg. These three guys are a hit making machine!

Jason Wade proved himself a gifted songwriter with Lifehouse's first record, 2000's multiplatinum No Name Face, which spawned the #1 hit "Hanging by a Moment." Calling that song a hit, however, is a bit of an understatement as "Hanging by a Moment" was the most-played song of 2001.

Stanley Climbfall, the band's Top 10 follow-up, was released in 2002.

2005 saw the release of their third album simply titled Lifehouse which included the undeniable hit #1 multi-format hit "You And Me" and kept the band out on the road touring for over a year.

With Who We Are, Lifehouse takes another evolutionary step making an upbeat album full of potential hits sure to please fans and make new ones.

2 out of 5 stars too safe.......2007-07-30

I have really enjoyed Lifehouse over the past couple of years and have never owned any of their stuff. I wanted a good summer listen, so I bought this cd. The songs were just okay, but only few were slighly catchy, the rest being very mellow and too safe. I really expected better of them. Overall, just 2 stars.

On the optomistic route, though, his voice was nice and the songs were sweet.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-28

These guys are awesome. I like this cd more every time I listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice.......2007-07-23

I greatly enjoied it.

A few people commented here about not liking "The Joke". Its one of my favorites on the CD. But then, I'm probably a little older than your average review writer here. "The Joke" shows direct old Cheap Trick influence. I could have easily been listenning to an old Neilsen/Zander/Peterson composition. For those of you who didn't like Cheap Trick in the 70's and early 80's (ala One on One, Dream Police, et al), this song may sound a little strange. However, I found it completely refreshing and different than anything I have heard in a long time. There guys just keep getting better.

4 out of 5 stars Lifehouse rocking POP..........2007-07-23

Have to admit, was wondering if they could ever capture the magic of No Name Face. They did here.A fine mix of soft rockers and balladry. Starting off with Disarray,First Time,Whatever It Takes...the album is destined for success.Among the other standouts are Broken,The Joke,Easier To Be and Learn You Inside Out. A real enjoyable effort from Lifehouse from beg. to end.I would highly recommend this one to many who perhaps, gave up on them after No Name Face. I did continue to buy their other efforts, but this one is my second fave .Buy it and you won't regret it. A solid 4.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-07-23

I am a big fan of Lifehouse so when I heard they were coming out with a new cd I had to have it. I bought it the day it was released. I never do that. It is refreshing to hear new songs of your favorite band. It was a big suprise to hear every amazing track. Lifehouse will go down as one of my "kinds of music" till I die. I definitely recommend this album to anybody that is a die hard Lifehouse fan.

One can never accuse the Chemical Brothers of consistency. We Are the Night continues their eclectic electronica approach even though the big-beat groove of the title track remains their digital calling card. Spotted with a minimalist keyboard pattern, vocal non sequiturs, and sampled sound effects, the infectious groove of "We Are the Night" eventually evolves into the monotone-chanted dance chorus of "We are the night skies/We are the bright lies," recalling Brian Eno circa Here Come the Warm Jets. However, for every catchy electro-dance, there's a tune that leaves you scratching your head. What to make of the novelty song "The Salmon Dance" is anybody's guess, though you might find some illumination in a salmon recipe on their Web site. With fractured nursery-rhyme lyrics that are sung like an off-color Sesame Street rap, it will drive you up the wall--or at least toward the skip button. Then there's Midlake singing the trancey ballad "The Pills Won't Help You Now," making the Chemical Brothers sound like a sci-fi version of Coldplay. Retro-analog synthesizers dominate, with the electro-grooves of "Das Spiegel," "Burst Generator," and "Saturate," which builds on a Kraftwerk-forged metal framework coupled with storming sampled drums. The circuits of '70s techno-pop artist the Normal are re-soldered on "Do It Again." With Ali Love singing the title-track chorus, it's built to be a summertime anthem akin to Tag Team's "Whoomp! (There It Is)," albeit robotically chilled. --John Diliberto

1 out of 5 stars Chemical Bros. on sedatives.......2007-07-31

I own every studio album by the CB, but I regret to say I will not be buying this one. Saturate and Modern Midnight conversation are decent, but the rest sound like Gorillaz B tracks. Looking forward to the next album.

5 out of 5 stars Not old Chemicals, New Chemicals!.......2007-07-29

I love the Chemical Brothers. As an electronic musician and dj, the Chems are my favorite artist and my biggest influence.

My favorite work of theirs is actually their DJ mix, "Brother's Gonna Work It Out." Just awesome.

I didn't really like their last album, "Push the Button." I thought it was just ok. The only song I played off that album, was "Rise" and that was actually a b-side to "Galvanize."

I've never loved any of their albums though. I've just thought that certain songs on their albums were mind blowing. The albums usually don't have a very danceable flow to them.

This one does.

This album is the first Chemical Brothers album that I can listen to from beginning to end. There was only one song I thought was slightly mediocre.

"Do It Again" makes a ton more sense now that I've heard it within the context of the album. The sung vocals were questionable to me, but after hearing the album, I think it's brilliant.

And, for the record, I think the "Salmon Dance" is wicked dancefloor material. The funkiest Chemical Brothers track ever.

This album is a bit less in your face then the earlier stuff, but it is quite relevant to the current state of electronic music. It draws influences from the minimal house/berlin techno and nu-rave scene but transcend all of that. They really make some odd-ball decisions and push songs in really strange directions, all the while keeping their familiar sound pallette.

If you want the old (and still great) block rockin' Chemical Brothers, then this is probably not the album for you. But if you want to hear cutting edge dance music, this is it.

Currently my favorite electronic music album. Period.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, You Are the Night.......2007-07-28

There are not so many bands in the musical panorama which, after releasing a singles' collection of a decade of existence, have made out 2 great new albums just after it. As many do, I really enjoy "Push the Button" but for me this album is almost capable of matching with it... and I must confess I was not expecting that. Yes, songs like "We Are the Night", "Das Spiegel" or "Burst Generator" are the night! Go for it fans, the formula is as good as ever.

1 out of 5 stars Don't think I'll buy it!!.......2007-07-27

This is NOT the Chemical Bros. that I know of!!! What the hell happened??? This whole album blows!! Thank god for the preview or else I would have to add another album to the stack of dust collectors and paperweights!! Listen at your own risk!!!

2 out of 5 stars Joe and Jason do it not to well.......2007-07-26

think this is dem, joe and jason chemical. why else would they be called chemical brothers right? Like Allman brothers yeah! I think the real question with this CD is the following: Do they have My Chemical Romance in mind? haha I am so funny, but then it plays into the question of chemical warfare and I doubt that the who-sane guy listened to these guys you know it? The one song I really like is the first song but after that it is just a lot of beeping noises. I think I should go into music becuz I can record my answering machine and make noises with my blender in the background and scream and yeah call it like a project album yeah. Best to listen to when eating pepperjack cheese with Dorito chips that are Nacho flavored yo!

Kelly Sweet was never a contestant on a TV singing competition, and she isn't the product of the latest svengali producer. Which, in 2007, makes her something of a rare new pop star. Her approach to the genre is pretty unexpected, too: Temperamentally, the flame-haired chanteuse falls somewhere between Celine Dion and Sarah McLachlan, which is to say she's all softness, warmth, and sincerity. Vocally, she's a ringer for Amy Lee of the rock band Evanescence, minus the goth fixation. And categorically, her closest fit within the wide world of pop is classical crossover. Consider her the female Josh Groban then, with the multilingual skills to match: In addition to a haunting and miraculously un-awful rendition of Aerosmith's "Dream On," she busts out a French track, "Je T'aime," that sends out summery flutters; a Sanskrit song from the film "Gladiator," "Now We Are Free," that impresses with its depth of feeling; and an Italian number, "Giorno Dopo Giorno," that ripples with tenderness and sentimentality. Sweet is a songbird with a wide wingspan; her debut mostly soars. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

Not your typical pop record in any way, shape or form, WE ARE ONE has a much more ambitious sensibility than those being heard on Top 40 radio today. With songs sung in English, Italian, French, and Sanskrit, and melodies that partake of both jazz and classical influences, WE ARE ONE conveys a sense of depth, intimacy and sophistication not often heard in today's pop landscape. The magnificent "Giorno Dopo Giorno" couples Sweet's soaring vocals with a thrilling string arrangement, bringing listeners the kind of intense joy that can usually only be experienced in the world's finest opera houses. "The song originally had English lyrics," says Sweet, "and it was called `Who Can I Believe In?' We felt that the melody was too European and didn't work with the lyrics, so we asked Marco Marinangelli, who writes Italian lyrics for Josh Groban, to translate the words into Italian. It came out beautifully." Sweet says she has always gravitated to the beautiful sounds of languages other than English. "I was classically trained beginning at the age of 11," she says, "and that's when I began to sing in other languages. It always came very easily to me."

WE ARE ONE, then, is that rarest of musical experiences--a seamless emotional journey that deeply touches listeners of all ages with its beauty, grace, individuality, and courage. But perhaps to call Sweet courageous is overstating something that is really much simpler. "This music is not about me," she says. "It's about the soul in all of us. I am just happy to have a voice to convey these things to the world."

And the world is certainly a better place because of it.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Music .......2007-07-22

After hearing "Raincoat" on satellite radio, I was compelled to buy the c.d. It was definitley worth the money. Her version of "Dream On" was one of the best covers that I have heard in a long time. I am eagerly anticipating her next c.d.
She is a wonderful artist.

5 out of 5 stars beautifully done - 5 stars.......2007-07-16

Kelly Sweet does have an angelic voice, but I don't mean in a childish way. She's a proficient musician, this CD is beautifully done, and the material is very well chosen. I would also recommend it if you're looking something for your teenager who loves fine music and it would make a nice gift. Norah Jones and Josh Groban fans might enjoy it, too, although Kelly is as unique as they are. Pure class.

I really do like them all, but my favorite cuts are Raincoat, Now We Are Free, Love Song and Je T'Aime. I think classical/jazz/pop music is a trend that's here to stay, people of all ages from all over the world enjoy it and it's just plain great. Hurray. :)

Like another reviewer said, this is a good one to put on when I'm home alone and want to relax, play it in the background while I'm cooking or curling up with a good book on a rainy day.

5 out of 5 stars Really Sweet.......2007-07-05

This CD was more than I expected. Saw Kelly Sweet on a local TV station perform and was intrigued. I am a rock and roll fan for many years and found this CD refreshing. You can't go wrong with this purchase. There is no way I want to wait for her next Cd but I guess I must. It seems Kelly has made me a Blues fan also. Her voice is soothing and beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful voice, good songs.......2007-06-28

I had never heard of Kelly Sweet until I heard her single, Raincoat, on Delilah's radio show one night. Kelly has a very beautiful, soothing voice. Her songs remind me of Sarah McLachlan, Norah Jones, and the classical crossover stuff of Josh Groban. If you are looking for some worthwhile pop music with some substance and maturity, Kelly's album is definitely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Blown Away!.......2007-06-14

Kelly Sweet has the most awesome voice I have ever heard in my entire life. I am sitting here in tears as I listen to her. If she is any where near, run to see her. Oh my God! Every song on this cd should be a Grammy winner. Five stars is an insult. If I never hear anyone else sing again, just hearing Ms. Sweet has completed my life.

Album Description

All sharp hooks and hefty beats, We Are Not Alone starts off with the Middle Eastern melody of the roaring lead single "So Cold," a riff-heavy track that showcases the fretwork of guitarist Aaron Fink, an expressive guitarist with a flair for both color and crunch. Employing a palette of quirky pedal effects, distorted textures and throttled power chords, he amplifies the emotion in each song, be it the confrontational rage in "Believe" or the sweeping emotional plea of "Break My Fall." "Aaron really stepped up on this record," says vocalist/guitarist Ben Burnely. "He's not so much a riff guy as someone who creates atmosphere. His talents really shine through here."

The perfectly paced album is anchored by the propelling rhythms of drums and bass as well as being driven by Burnley, who brings each melody to life with a voice that's both graceful ("Rain") and Godzillian ("Away"). He soars over the mile-high chorus of "Follow," delivering the insistent hook with unbridled passion and grit. "Touring helped develop my singing ability and allowed me to try new things on this record," he says. "It gave me a sense of confidence that was really liberating."

The band credit producer David Bendeth for the album's adventurous spirit, saying that he encouraged them to reach higher by digging deeper. "David has a great ear and helped pull better performances out of us," says Fink. "He also added a lot of flavor to the record. Unlike the first album, which was all bass, drums and guitar, this record is filled with all sorts of tasty ear candy. It's definitely headphones-worthy."

There's something so apt about the band name chosen by Chad Petree and his Shiny Toy Guns playmates. Synth-driven, bright, and relentlessly safe, the plastic pop sound on We Are Pilots references the '80s even more explicitly than the Duran Duran-loving Killers. But despite the occasional chirpy electro (most directly referenced in "Le Disko") and the Human League makeup it's intensely modern, closer to emo than New Wave. The band's debut features a two-vocal combination, with Petree's young-man-in-love tenor rubbing up against Carah Faye's artier edge; she gives a song like "Jackie Will Save Me" a bratty boost. But more often, the band's peppy tragedies ("Chemistry of a Car Crash") and pretty heartaches ("Waiting") sound too tailored for alternative radio. The glossy production sheen, flawless execution, and overall glitz, however, make it easy to forget they're essentially just a tarted-up pop pastiche. In the midst of a quick, passionate fling, you could care less how meaningless and disposable it is... you just know it's hot. Your relationship with Shiny Toy Guns may be a similarly brief--if intense--affair, but you'll always have those first three or four listens. --Matthew Cooke

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars amatuer at best! I am very displeased with this album given the hype.......2007-06-20

Shiny pilot poo poo yeah. I bought this album based on so many 5 star reviews and the claim that they were pop synth fun for the 21st century. I was thinking okay Cat, you are gonna like these cats, they are gonna be like space cowboys or maybe even something like pet shop boys or whatever. This album has little substance, this music is "lite" to say the least, the waning voice of the singer really does not do anything for me. The songwriting itself shines at times but overall the sound of this entire CD is just flat out FLAT. I was just really disappointed and was expecting a much greater showcase of talent. I would have to say bands like Coldplay or Modest Mouse fare much better in this category because these guys are trying to bring back a certain style of music that they obviously do not have the talent to perform.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars. Decent........2007-06-20

I purchased this album having heard the songs "Le Disko" and "Don't Cry Out". Both songs were a great introduction to what seemed to be an extremely talented band that professionally mixed electronic elements with synth-pop and soft rock.
Unfortunately though, when I purchased the album, I found that, the female singer, one of the basic things that I thought made the two songs I had been exposed to so great, barely sang at all. Shiny Toy Guns apparently also has a male singer who definitely doesn't meet the high vocal standards that the female singer holds him to. So, his vocals on the CD basically ruined most of the songs for me.

Still, though, the LP has its high points. "We are Pilots", "Jackie Will Save Me", "Don't Cry Out" and "Le Disko" are all amazing songs that instantaneously grab your attention. The music, itself, is also pretty original for the most part.

So, if male singers that aren't just quite as good as female singers on a CD don't bother you too much and you're interested in hearing some generally unique and catchy music, I'd suggest you give this album a try.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most beautiful things in recent memory.......2007-06-13

Shiny Toy Guns has a completly unique signature to their music. "We Are Pilots" was refreshing to listen to, as the work really sets itself apart from most of the current albums out there. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys music. All of the tracks are great, and the price is very reasonable.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-05-26

Great chillout album, with some nice hooks. It was quite unexpected for me, as I must admit that I made the purchase based on the single "Le Disko". However, I found the second single - "You are the One" - more in line with the flavour of the album and I find it has better replay value for me than "Le Disko" in any case.

5 out of 5 stars we are pilots.......2007-03-11

Shiny Toy Guns may not be doing anything incredibly novel on this album, but it sounds great nonetheless. The songs aren't by any means rough, yet not over-polished, still allowing enough of their artistic abilities to show through and not sounding like a run-of-the-mill pop record, or worse, like a rather pointless band that scenesters will worship for a month and then forget about. The vocal performances on the opening track, "You are the One", "Don't Cry Out" and "We are Pilots" are fantastic, in my opinion. The singers have the ability to be intense and push their limits without sounding whiney. The whole album seems to centre around a sort of sci-fi theme, and even the album art is stylised in the same way, with the photography of the band portraying them as futuristic, almost super-human figures. It's really a great album. It has just the right blend of guitars, rhythm, and dancey electronica. My only complaint rests with the track "Chemistry of a Car Crash." Far too many bands out there have sang about car crashes. It's tired; it really doesn't add anything to the album. Fortunately, the other songs more than make up for it, and I still think it's still a superb record.

This soundtrack offers a pretty standard mix of new songs, old chestnuts, and excerpts from the score (here by John Debney). On the new tip, Joss Stone and Patti LaBelle engage in an overheated battle of the divas on CD opener "Stir It Up," a bouncy piece of fluff that sounds more like Aretha Franklin circa "Freeway of Love" than classic soul. Other originals include Barenaked Ladies' "One Little Slip" (this movie's answer to Counting Crows' "Accidentally in Love" from Shrek 2) and the Cheetah Girls' peppy-but-bland cover of "Shake Your Tail Feather." But the real highlights are the songs performed by the movie's vocal cast, which includes Joan Cusack, Garry Marshall, Zach Braff, Steve Zahn, and Amy Sedaris. Their group cover of Elton John and Kiki Dee's "Don¹t Go Breaking My Heart," for instance, sounds as if half of them were drunk in the recording studio (and this is meant as a compliment.) Braff's a cappella version of "We Are the Champions" is smashing and Cusack and Zahn's take on the Spice Girls' "Wannabe" is completely demented. The kids will laugh; their parents will laugh even harder for completely different reasons. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars my little one loves Chicken Little.......2007-04-05

My husband bought the Chicken Little movie for our 3 year old (mostly to get us OFF the Cars movie that we all have memorized) and he fell in love with it! He likes to act out the scenes and loves the music. He loves this CD at night when he's going to bed. We all have to dance to One Little Slip (he knows all the words) and then we have to "shake our tail feathers" before he jumps in bed every night! I enjoy the cd too, so it's good for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars this is a great kids cd!!.......2007-03-24

My daughter absolutely loves this cd. I could not find it anywhere until i looked on amazon, so thank you amazon!!

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack for the children, especially if they liked the movie!.......2007-03-14

My son loved the movie Chicken Little, so we decided to purchase this for him to listen to on his discman. He loves the soundtrack as much as the movie, which made it an awesome investment(especially since the soundtrack has many good singers that aren't too hard on the ears for the adult crowdes either). My son was very happy with this item, and so was I.

5 out of 5 stars Her favorite gift..........2006-12-23

I bought the CD to accompany the movie. My four year old watches the movie everyday. When I gave her the CD, after listening to it nightly, she takes it to bed with her everynight where I have to pry it out of her hands after she falls off to sleep. I don't get it, but she does...so it's worth what I paid for it.

5 out of 5 stars Chicken Little Soundtrack.......2006-08-29

This is a great soundtrack from a variety of different artists. If your child loved the movie you will absolutely love this CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

5 out of 5 stars A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

When Devo's debut album came out in 1978, nobody knew what to make of the mutant new-wave quintet from Akron, Ohio. With Brian Eno's skillful production, Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh, Jerry and Bob Casale, and Alan Myers emerged fully formed and outrageous with their razor-sharp social commentary and exhibition of subversive media savvy. Beyond their industrial uniforms and pseudo-devolved demeanor, Devo also happened to be a rocking little band. Classic rave-outs like "Mongoloid," "Jocko Homo," and "Uncontrollable Urge" illustrate the band's perky-jerky intensity. On their inimitable cover of the Rolling Stones' youth anthem, "Satisfaction," Devo's avant-garde robot funk takes the song to a new level of alienation and discontent. While the band went on to greater fame, this was the only album they made that truly mattered. --Mitch Meyers

5 out of 5 stars Aww, Dad: We're ALL DEVO!.......2007-06-02

Wow. I was 14 when this came out, and it really got to me: I remember staying up all hours to get a chance to film (not record, film) DEVO's early films and videos on Don Kirshner's. Just the perfect antidote to Foreigner.
Yes, it is a real grounbreaker of an album and, strangely, has an original flavor that DEVO shed as quickly as they recorded their second album. The Akron anarchy still shines through on this one, though: the sense that these guys were having such a great time playing their joke on the spudboys at Warner Bros, and disbelieving they were getting the chance. 'Course, having Eno -- while he could still take a joke -- and Connie Planck involved in the production was a big help, too. For this album, it all REALLY worked. And the album got (for 1978, when, remember, Foreigner still reigned) kind of big, at least among the colllege and art school kids. Too bad that after this, the Smart Patrol really did have nowhere to go except into Noo Wave parody.

5 out of 5 stars Look What The Rubber City Exported.......2006-09-27

A band that dressed like spacemen, moved like robots and had a painting of pro golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez gracing the cover of its first full-length album. No wonder Devo had to escape northeast Ohio to find their musical niche in London during the "Year of Punk (1978)."

The album actually was the band's second release, as producer Brian Eno worked with Devo on a 12-inch EP that covered much of the same quirky frontier, but had what I feel is a far-surperior rendition of Jocko Homo.

And if Devo would have stayed based in Akron and gigging throughout northeast Ohio, the name would have probably been used for a junk shop band members could have opened up. It seemed that folks cleared out their attics and basements to pelt the band with a variety of unique objects as they attempted to rip through sets of original material. Space Junk, indeed!

The album remains a classic nearly 30 years, with each song delivering a perspective on society that is literally out of this world. The cover of The Rolling Stones' classic (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction comes as close as any group has to one-upping Mick and the boys.

The lost love in Come Back Jonee, with truly punk perspectives on life - Too Much Paranoias, Uncontrollable Urge - and a twisted ode to a person with Down syndrome - Mongoloid - even made the unruly fans in concert's past hail Devo when they returned to Akron to promote the album.

Devo was truly the rubber city rebels.

5 out of 5 stars If You Like Music, Buy This Album.......2006-09-14

DEVO has not been given appropriate credit for their contributions to modern music. Written off as a "One Hit Wonder" (for "Whip It" which is not on this album but is on "Freedom Of Choice"), DEVO bridged the gaps between punk and new wave and again from new wave to electronica. They have influenced more bands than most people realize. If you fancy yourself as one who has a big CD/MP3 collection, it is incomplete without this album! Also, visit their web site: http://www.clubdevo.com . They are still alive and kicking and they occasionally tour. Buy this album and go and see them. I've met them, they are very nice guys!

And Remember, De-evolution Is Real!

The Devolutionary Oath:
1. Be like your ancestors or be different. It doesn't matter.

5 out of 5 stars Devo's Best.......2006-09-03

This is not "Whip It".
This is, however, a very very good album by quirky New Wavers Devo.
Devolve and enjoy this stuff.

2 out of 5 stars stood test of time for being bizarre.......2006-08-09

I liked this when it first came out b/c I was 16. I was a rebel, wanted to be part of something different. This is their best work since the weirdness does get lame after a while.

Favorite song is Mongoloid...totally strange but rocking song. "Uncontrollable Urge" rocks (in a weird way) and Come Back Johnny is almost a conventional song. Satisfaction is completely unique but its not a good song. The group was obviously trying to do more than music and develop a KISS, multi media, making money kind of thing.

I saw them live (they were horrible) during their hey day. The most interesting thing about them is while other odd bands were eventually accepted and integrated into the mainstream, DEVO is still as odd of a group as ever. Mark Motherbough does a lot of soundtrack work (Rugrats) and you can hear the DEVO in all of his work.

Anybody that gives this novelty group 5 stars is cheapening what true excellent music is. DEVO came out as a Goof, not as serious musicians. They got big in the 70's b/c they were part of the new wave and kids (like me) were looking for alternative music that we can claim our own.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Too busy.......2006-07-14

I was hoping for more music - there's just too much storytelling for my and my kids' taste. We love the Beethoven's Wig series and were hoping this would be similar.

5 out of 5 stars what a road trip.......2005-02-21

i bought this item after reading some of the reviews on amazon for my nephews who are 2 and 4 years of age. two months after christmas their mom was explaining how they request the cd everytime they are in the car. she groaned when i was in the car and they boys wanted to show me how much they liked the cd. during the trip i witnessed a mother humming along to the music with her children, the boys singing to excerpts, and an overall execptional learning experience about music, culture, and history. if you are looking for something that all children will like, passes the time on a road trip, and teaches important lessons about life without being pretentious then get this cd, it is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerized and moved mom to tears.......2005-01-26

This CD is awesome, the music great, the story captivating. But it's Mozart, you already know about the music. Other reviewers have already discussed the story and I agree with their assessments that it's very good. The reason for this review is to say that my very active, never stopping, constantly in motion 5 year old SAT DOWN AND LISTENED without fidgeting or fiddling for a full 20 minutes and then sat but fiddled for the remainder of the CD. Maybe this is not a big deal to moms of "normal" energy level children -- but this simple act of being still for 20 minutes moved me to tears. I said nothing before putting the CD in, I just put it in while he was doing his running around. Within seconds of hearing the story start he sat down on the floor, crossed his legs, and listened while looking at the speakers. I have never seen this behavior from my child before, ever. Please note that this is a child who is not ADD, he just cannot be still. He listens to hundreds of hours of stories we read to him -- while he's doing something else. He "watches" videos -- while he's doing something else. He reads, while clapping or tapping out the beat of the syllables. I cannot remember my child ever stopping what he was doing to JUST LISTEN. When it was over he said, "That was a cool story," and got up to run around. That was it, but that's high praise from this child. To see my child sitting still for a full 20 minutes, you cannot begin to imagine my awe. I am running right out to get the rest of the series! Bravo to the producers!
