This is a really good representation of 20th century hymn tunes sung by a typical British Choir made up of boy sopranos, male altos and the usual number of tenors and basses. The choir sings very well using good diction and appropriate interpretation. The arrangements are varied, different groups of voices singing parts of a hymn usually alternating and eventually the full choir joins in; nothing unusual in the arrangements themselves. There is a nice variety of hymns, some more interesting than others. I will comment on a few of them as follows:
The opening hymn:'Christ, triumphant, ever reigning' is a good opener in that it is quick and begins with the boy sopranos and immediately gets your attention. John Barnard's majestic 'Guiting Power' tune sweeps the words up in a wide-ranging,flowing melody that creates from them a fine hymn.
'I, the Lord of sea and sky(Here I am, Lord) is a truly striking hymn! The words of this song begin with a proclamation in the verses; this is answered in the refrain by the singer's commitment to service. This is reflected in the tune. The melody for the verses has a vigorous movement to proclaim the work of God in creation, His continuing love for that creation,and His call for service. Both the words and music are by the American Jesuit musician Daniel L. Schutte, who has served both on college campuses and in parish ministry.
'All My Hope On God Is Founded' the tune of which is written by Herbert Howells and is called 'Michael'in memory of his son who died in childhood. It is a lovely melody and the words suit it very well.
The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams was the music editor of the 'English Hymnal'. The most widely used of his own tunes was the 'Monk's Gate' which he created from a folk tune. It is subtly contrived, as the rhythm of the alleluias shows. 'Sine nomine' simply means without a name.The resulting hymn is 'For All the Saints'.

The Wells Cathedral Choir under the direction of Malcolm Archer accompanied by Rupert Gough on the organ have produced an excellent disc.

God is an Englishman.......2000-06-05

After the Anglican Communion, particularly the American branch, has completed its transformation from a church to a political-social club, at least it will be remembered for two things: the beautiful and influential language of its Book of Common Prayer (1662) and its wonderful music. The English Hymn, volume 1, is a promising start to another English music series by Hyperion. This series complements Hyperion's English Anthems series, its Psalms at St. Paul's (many volumes of Anglican chant), and its two-CD collection of "Mags and Nuncs" (My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord and My Spirit Hath Rejoiced). Volume 1, "Christ Triumphant," features hymns written in the 20th century. The styles of the hymns range from confident, pre-Great War, "God is an Englishman" roof-raisers to insipid, happy-clappy jingles, which inadvertently, I assume, parallel the decline of the church. The Wells Cathedral Choir sings with gusto and, typical of Hyperion, the sound quality is excellent. My only disappointment came when the CD ended - is this all there is to the 20th century? I hope Hyperion plans to include more than one volume on the 20th century in this series. If you enjoy this type of music, you will be satisfied with this CD. If you have CDs from the other series listed above, the English Hymn, vol. 1, and a programmable, carousel-CD player, now you can click your heels and transport yourself to Evensong at King's College, Cambridge, or St. Paul's, London!

Album Description

Alicia Solomon's wide experience includes opera, ("Queen of the Night"), oratorio, ("Messiah"), and musical theater, (Gilbert & Sullivan to Weber & Rice), as well as extensive sacred work, spanning three continents and over thirty years. Recently, she has performed with the Santa Fe Opera, Santa Fe Symphony, Santa Fe Concert Association, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, and the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, who welcome her back this Christmas season. She is currently soloist with the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Santa Fe. Her first CD, "Psalms & Prophets", was just released in October, and is an eclectic mix of original, contemporary, and classical favorites. Sweet Ona Rose is a marvelous, evocative debut album--years upon years of Americana folklore and travelogue all wrapped up in the slight frame of Krebs and his guitar. Songs like the jaunty title track and the melancholy "Pacific Standard Time" resonate with the sound of empty highways at 3 a.m., as another lost love drifts on by. Trombone, pedal steel, and organ gently flesh out Krebs's poignant outlines--imagine Evan Dando (the Lemonheads), but slightly more folksy and with more stories to tell. Krebs has been around the block many times (including stints in the somewhat lame alt-rock band Hazel and the charmingly retro Golden Delicious), and it shows. Yet even within his world-weary and sardonic songs of love, a certain naiveté shines through. --Everett True

Fantastic album..........2001-03-26

I was recently recommended this by ..., & upon listeningto the mp3's i had to order it. I was humming the music to the titletrack "Sweet Ona Rose" before i even got this. personaly igive this album 4 & 1/2 stars. Besides Elliot Smith or perhapsRichard Buckner, or maybe Mark Kozelek of Red House painters fame,Pete Krebs is 1 of the most exiciting "newer" song writersout there. I love his song writing & his simple, yet poignentvoice radiates w/ honesty... I tried to put this cd on my "Listmania" list, however i wrote down the wrong ... # & now some... techno dj is unfortunately on my list. I absolutely love"Pacific Standard Time" & "Sweet Ona Rose, but tobe honest all the songs on here are so wonderful that its truelydifficult to pic out my "fave" song... they're all soowonderful. Petes "sound" sorta reminds me of"americana" meets "folk" if that makes anysense. If you like this cd then u need to get your hands on his 1st& most unerated cd "Brigadier". It's sound is morequiet, but it'll give you a better idea of what Petes music is allabout. I cant reccomend any of his stuff enough... Buy thisimmediately as well as his 1st cd, you will not be dissapointed

An outstanding CD.......2000-05-06

This is arguably the best album (his Western Electric is a very close second) from definatly the best musician working in the Northwest, perhaps the whole country. This CD hooks you right off the bat with Johny Come Lately, and you stay hooked till the very end. All the songs on this CD are so good that any other musician would be gratefull to have just 1 or 2 like them on any of their albums. Of particular note are Dressed to the 9's, Ashes Back to Vegas, Hey Mr. Smalltown and Sweet Ona Rose. There is so much alternative rock garbage out there today that it's nice to know there is still someone like Pete Krebs making good, genuine and sincere music. We should all be thankfull, especially those of us who live in the northwest, for we get to call him our own.

This is one of my favorite CDs. I bought it last summer after seeing him live for the (can you believe it) first time - and have since seen him every chance I get. This CD rotates from my car to my home stereo. Cheers me up when I'm feeling blue and pumps me up when I'm about to go out and see some alterna-lame bands here in the big ol' grungy-pop city....

This CD has quickly become one of my favorite, the kind I play over and over. Lynn's voice is clear and beautiful on these songs she wrote; the instruments and background vocals are quite well done. "I Promise You" would make a great wedding song, but there are no bad songs on this one. I love them all!

This CD is one of the best post Maestro Mantovani issues. The mostly abbreviated selections, arranged by Stanley Black(a noted conductor and arranger in his own right)makes for a dreamy hour
of light classics. A wide range of miniatures from Albeniz to Kreisler to Tchaikovsky are included. All are DDD recorded circa
1995, one of the best sounding from this source. The 4 star rating is mostly for the material chosen and the tranquil ambiance this disc conveys. For some reason this recording is rare and can be pricey. Keep your eyes open for a cheap copy!
