During the late 1980s, Robert Wratten led the outer-London-suburb group the Field Mice through similar terrain. But back then he was trying to woo singer Annemari Davies into being his girlfriend. He eventually won and lost the girl. Now, clearly but not cleanly broken up, they soldier on as Trembling Blue Stars. Wratten's apparent frustration with his life and failures in love suggest that this isn't the healthiest arrangement for all involved. But the residual sparks--be they love's dying embers or the combustion of eternal tension--make for emotionally compelling listening nonetheless. Tempos are mostly slower than a heartbeat, resembling the ticking of time running out. Instrumentation ranges from austere shimmers of guitar to brooding organ chords that are nearly motionless. Titles such as "I No Longer Know Anything" and "Sometimes I Still Feel the Bruise" are precise examples of the torment contained inside. In many ways, it's less like listening to an album than reading the pages of someone else's diary. --Rob O'Connor

I love this band. Robert Wratten is of these guys who finds beautiful melodies endlessly then puts hooks all over the place + has a magnifiscent voice. It's generally slow though, which I like. This is a great album.

One of the best bands I've never heard.......2005-03-14

I can't believe this album was released 5 years ago, but I only just recently heard it for the first time. Literally, TBS drew me in the moment the first song started.

Overall, their stuff is quiet, thoughtful, sparse (without neglecting melody) and melancholy. In many ways I think it's a great testament to a group when I find it difficult to describe them, yet easy to describe how they made me feel.

Stunning album.......2003-04-15

This is one of those rare music gems that the uninitiated might easily pass by. It the type of album that will soon become one of favorites, even if you knew almost nothing about the band before buying.

The music is beautiful and heartfelt, possessing the type of inteligent, passionate lyrics that are one seldom finds in standard cookie-cutter pop radio offerings these days.

Take my advice -- give this CD a try!

Broken by Subtle Beauty.......2001-11-19

God, this is a gorgeous CD. Others have written detailed and glowing reviews, so I just want to say that this is one of the most tender and revealing CDs that I have ever listened to and loved. If you decide to check out the snippets from Broken by Whispers, you will get an accurate sampling of the quiet beauty of Trembling Blue Stars. It is difficult for me to list my favorites because all of the tracks are appealing to me--"Ripples," "She Just Couldn't Stay," "Sometimes I Still Feel the Bruise," "Sleep," "Dark Eyes." I fell right into this CD and played it almost non-stop for about a week. I still listen to it regularly. Broken is relaxing, telling, and the lyrics remind me of reading someone's hidden love letters. I highly recommend this subtle and personal CD.

I also want to note that fans of Dashboard Confessional should check out Broken. DC's song "A Plain Morning" is very similar to TBS' tone, style, and lyrics, but I don't think many emo/DC fans know about TBS.
