5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The first of these two discs gathers all Gershwin's commercially issued discs as a pianist, including the two abridged Rhapsody in Blue traversals, Gershwin accompanying the Astaire siblings, and twelve solo sides. Hearing the composer play his own music is like getting your ears cleaned out from 75 years of interpretive maulings. Gershwin's crisp touch, clear-cut and unsentimental phrasing, and rhythmic verve comes through more convincingly in these flat discs than in his much-vaunted piano rolls. Also included are the composer-supervised first recordings of An American in Paris and selections from Porgy & Bess, along with a flawed yet revelatory aircheck of Gershwin playing the finale of his concerto. No Gershwin lover should be without this important collection. --Jed Distler

4 out of 5 stars Gershwin plays Gershwin.......2006-01-26

George Gershwin's best-selling recording was a 1924 acoustical, black seal Victor disc that reproduced the recent world premiere of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue." The Paul Whiteman Orchestra, which actually a big band with a few strings added on occasion, joined the composer in an edited performance that was intended to fill two sides of a single 12-inch 78-rpm disc. By 1924 the acoustical process had been refined to its highest possible standards; already Victor and Columbia were among the companies experimenting with electrical recording and would begin releasing commercial discs the following spring.

Although one is disappointed with the cuts in the familiar "Rhapsody in Blue," what did make it onto the original disc is quite remarkable. It certainly gives the first clear indication of Gershwin's brilliant piano playing. No one would ever play Gershwin's music with more enthusiasm and ability than the composer himself. The Whiteman orchestra plays Ferde Grofe's original arrangement and gives a clear indication of what the February 1924 premiere must have sounded like, even if the sonics are somewhat limited by the acoustical process. Only three years later Victor reunited the same musicians with Gershwin for an electrical recording, using the same cuts.

Gershwin's numerous piano solos, sometimes including his friends Fred and Adele Astaire (who had introduced some of the Gershwin songs in his musical comedies), are amazing. His virtuoso piano playing astonishes us and, for the most part, the sound on these early electrical recordings is quite good. A single microphone was usually placed close to the grand piano, picking up the best possible sound of that time.

The world premiere recording of "An American in Paris" was made in 1929 for RCA Victor, using a hand-picked orchestra that was conducted by Nathaniel Shilkret, Victor's longtime musical director. Gershwin was on hand, supposedly to supervise the recording of the complete score, but he reportedly "got in the way" and was asked to leave the recording studio. Then it was recognized that there was no one on hand to play the celesta solo, so Gershwin was asked to return and play the brief but impressive passage that adds to the magical moments of this innovative score. Also included were the original Paris taxi horns that Gershwin had brought back with him in 1928 for the first performance.

Alexander Smallens conducted Metropolitan Opera stars Helen Jepson and Lawrence Tibbett and a professional orchestra in excerpts from Gershwin's latest musical triumph, "Porgy and Bess." Although the folk opera had not yet achieved its later great success, many recognized the innovations of this score and RCA Victor asked Gershwin to supervise the recording of some of the important songs from his opera in 1935. While some may question the use of white singers to sing in Negro dialect, particularly when the first performances used a mostly black cast, not even the Metropolitan Opera used black singers until 1955 when Marian Anderson made her long-awaited debut in Verdi's "A Masked Ball."

Finally, there is a tantalizing excerpt from the "Concerto in F" in a special arrangement for Rudy Vallee's radio program on NBC. Gershwin occasionally appeared on radio programs, even hosting his own 15-minute show in the early 1930's, and this is one of the few surviving examples of how Gershwin could dazzle both the studio audience and the millions tuning in on their radios. It is a wonderful moment.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Gershwin Collection, Despite Variable Sound.......2005-05-14

That Gershwin (1896-1937) died so young from a malignant brain tumor was a tragic loss to the world of music. Like Mozart and Schubert, who also died while still in their 30's, Gershwin was just hitting his stride at the time of his death. Unlike Mozart, he wrote no symphonies or chamber music, but like Schubert, he was one of the greatest song writers the world has ever known. And as the Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F clearly demonstrate, Gershwin was probably the greatest "cross-over" artist in American history.

This 2-disc Pearl CD set, as Amazon editorial reviewer Jed Distler points out, is an essential purchase for anyone who loves Gershwin's music. Pearl adheres to an "as is" philosophy of transferring old 78 rpm records to CD. This results in very immediate sound, but a lot of shellac noise comes along with it. With a little twiddling of your treble knob, these performances are very listenable and thoroughly enjoyable.

To my mind, just about everything here falls into the category of "definitive" performance. The 1924 Rhapsody In Blue has more joy and exhilaration than any other recording made (and Gershwin's piano playing is heard more clearly than in the 1927 electrical re-make, fine as it is). It was recorded just four months after the world premiere at Aeolian Hall in New York City. What an event that must have been! The audience included such luminaries as Rachmaninov, Kreisler & Sousa. When the performance was finished, the audience roared its approval with a standing ovation that lasted 20 MINUTES!

The songs with Fred Astaire and his sister Adele are utterly delightful, and Gershwin's solo piano playing strikes me as a far truer representation of his art than his notoriously unreliable piano rolls available elsewhere. "An American in Paris," conducted by Gershwin's boyhood chum Nathaniel Shilkret, is irresistable (Gershwin even plays the small parts for piano & celesta, and the car horns he brought back from Paris are used here).

The original 1935 "Porgy and Bess" excerpts, conducted by Alexander Smallens, are wonderful. Jepson is excellent, but the real star here is Lawrence Tibbett, to my taste the greatest operatic baritone America has ever produced. His enormous charm is complemented by fabulous diction - he's one of the very few "classical" singers whose every word is clearly understandable.

Gershwin never recorded a complete Concerto in F. For the best-ever version of that, you have to buy the Roy Bargas/Bix Beiderbecke/Paul Whiteman account on a Pearl CD called "Gershwin and Grofe," which also has the first-ever recordings of Grofe's Grand Canyon & Mississippi Suites (a lot of fun!). But here we get to hear the ONLY CD account of Gershwin himself playing just the 2nd mvt. from a 1933 Rudy Valle Show radio broadcast. It's fascinating and frustrating at the same time: a tantalizing fragment of what must have been a glorious interpretation.

The Concerto in F excerpt is UNIQUE to this CD - which makes it a MANDATORY purchase for Gershwin lovers. The Rhapsody (both versions), American in Paris, and the Porgy selections are also on Sony's "Historic Gershwin Recordings" in somewhat smoother transfers. The aforementioned Whiteman-conducted Concerto in F is also on a Sony CD called "From Gershwin's Time" (sadly, it's out of print - see my review).

CDs seem to have an alarmingly short shelf life these days, so grab this wonderful set while it's still available.

Very Highly Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars The first disc especially is fantastic.......2001-04-03

For Gershwin collectors, the sides with the Astaires are essential. The Whiteman Rhapsody is also quite good. Some of the later material does NOT feature Gershwin on piano and has the feeling of filler. Still, I've gotten a lot of enjoyment from this collection.

    3 out of 5 stars What's So Funny?.......2002-08-02

"Ain't It Funny" was one of the real standouts from Jennifer's second album "J.Lo", and it's a great track, as the album version, which is the main cut here, shows. Normally, she not only works out some good songs, but manages to issue some pretty incredible remixes, something she fails to do here. The only real club track is the remix by "Silk" Hurley, which at over eight minutes in length, has some dull points. A "Brandnew Extended" version of the track is a highlight, adding more of an R&B feel and enhancing the Latin vibe already present. The next two tracks are remixes of "Que Ironia", the Spanish language version of the song. The short "Tropical Dance Remix" is totally bland and fails to excite, while the next track is a slow R&B mix, turning this song into a bump-n-grind track, something it's not. A stunning single, but a real dud when it comes to the remixes. The black sheep of Ms. Lopez's singles discography if there ever was one.

5 out of 5 stars aint it funny (j. lo).......2001-10-20

    J. lo is definetely the BEST spanish singer I heard. Her single "Aint It Funny" is SO MUCH better than her first 4 singles, "Love Don't Cost a Thing", "Play", "I'm Real", and "I'm Real (Murder Remix f/ Ja Rule)". When I bought the J.lo album, I didn't really listen to "Aint It funny" until it came on after I was listening to "Walking On Sunshine", another hot j.lo song. So, I bought the single after I heard it. It is great. Here's what I think:

    1) Aint It Funny (ALBUM VERSION)- It is strait off the album and has a GREAT trumpet intro!

    2) Aint It Funny (SILK HOUSE MIX PT. 1 AND 2)- A good remix. A pretty long intro with the trumpet dubbed a bit, but this isn't the greatest remix I've heard.

    3) Aint It Funny (BRANDNEW EXTENDED)- The 2nd best mix on the single. It has a great chorus intro and it keeps the beat going. Listen to this one first if you plan on buying it.

    4) Aint It Funny (TROPICAL DANCE REMIX)- The 3rd best remix on the cd. It has a darkside intro and then gets to the hot spanish beat. Speaking of Spanish, the whole song is in spanish, but doesn't include the spanish rap as in the D'Hip Mix.

5)Aint It Funny (MURDER REMIX F/ JA RULE)- Whole new set of words. I hate it when they do that. It sounds good though

    6) Aint it funny (D'HIP MIX)- #1 remix! Best track on the cd! Nice and slow and contains a kickin' rap from some rapper. But, it's in spanish and it sounds great! Please listen to this!

    THAT'S IT. C YA

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding if you like J-Lo's Latin styles........2001-08-15

If you like the original "album version" found on J-Lo, you will love this single. If you are looking for American style club mixes, don't bother unless you are a diehard J-Lo fan.

    1) Album Version - Straight off the J-Lo CD. This song was instantly my favorite on the album, so I've been waiting for this single.

    2) Silk's House Mix (8:28) - This is a standard, techno-style club mix that speeds the tempo up to 140 beats per minute (as opposed to 115bpm on the original). The mix eliminates all of the Latin flavor. The last few minutes kind of drags with mostly just a drum beat. It sounds like Silk added it as a long transition to mix into the next song when he's playing a club.

    3) Brandnew Extended (4:54) - A better club-style mix at the same tempo as the original. Eliminates the background music except for a solid, electronic drum beat behind the singing and a transitional melody from the original album version.

    4) Tropical Dance Remix (3:49) - This remix is very similar to the original album version, but it is entirely in Spanish, and cuts most of the intro & fade-out. The background music is slightly different than the original, and the background singers are different. The tempo is slightly faster at 120bpm. This is a very good remix if you like J-Lo's Latin influences.

    5) D'Hip Mix (4:20) - This remix is my favorite by far. It's slightly slower than the original (110bpm) and has a solid, Latin style to it. This mix is entirely in Spanish and includes a 20 second Spanish rap by "D'Shon" toward the end of the song.

Cover art - two great photos of Jennifer.

Summary: If you like the original album version of this song and you like Jennifer Lopez' Latin influenced music (e.g. Carino, Let's Get Loud, Dame, Si Ya Se Acabo, etc.) then you will absolutely LOVE this single, and it will be well worth the money. If you don't think the album version of this song is your thing, then the single isn't for you...that's why it was only released as an international single. I gave this release 5 stars because Jenni's Latin-styled music is my favorite. If you are looking for something in the American-style club mixes, go with the "Play" or "Waiting For Tonight" single instead. If I were rating this release based on her club-style music, I would have given it 2.5 or 3 stars.

2 out of 5 stars this ain't funny at all........2001-08-05

J Lo's remixes have usually been pretty darn good. Take a look at "Waiting For Tonight", "Feelin' So Good", "Let's Get Loud" & "Play". These singles all had fabulous remixes. So what happened with this one. Let's take a look shall we?

    1) Album Version - 4:05 - A midtempo little jam with more than just a touch of Spanish influence. This is a decent song when Jennifer is singing the verses, but the background signers take over during the chorus totally drowning out Jennifer's vocals, which is just too loud. Not one of Jen's strongest singles, but it's not the worst thing she's ever done either.

    2) Silk's House Mix pt 1 & 2 - 8:28 - Steve "Silk" Hurley is one of the early house pioneers. He's done remixes for such classic artists as CeCe Peniston, Kym Sims, Michael Jackson and Dannii Minogue back in the early nineties and more recently artists such as Stars On 54, Jestofunk, and Melanie B. So he's got alot of remix work under his belt. Too bad this one is so dull. Your basic plod, plod, plod remix. The intro starts out very promising with a very Spanish feel to it, but loses it as soon as the vocal comes in. Why is that? The deliverance of the vocal hasn't been tweaked at all and does nothing to bring this track to a new level. The chorus gals are screaming through this one as well. This one is NOT for club consumption.

    3) Brandnew Extended - 4:54 - This one has a stronger beat to it which makes this one the best mix on the disc. The Spanish sound has been toned done a bit, but the chorus vocals have not. These girls need to stop screaming at us. This is the most R&B influenced remix on here.

    4) Tropical Dance Remix - 3:49 - Unless you speak Spanish or love Spanish music, you will probably not enjoy this mix. Sung completely in Spanish, with a faster beat than the original, but pretty much the same thing. The chorus people don't scream at you in this one though.

    5) O'Hip Mix - 4:20 - More of a bump 'n' grind mix here, and also sung completely in Spanish. But if you've ever wanted to hear Spanish rap, here's where you can do it.

So there you go, I'm probably going to get more than a few non-helpful votes from the J Lo fans, but guys, keep in mind, I am a huge J Lo fan. This is just not a good single. The only reason it gets two stars is because it's J Lo and the first three mixes are tolerable.

    5 out of 5 stars A must have for any j.lo fan . . ........2001-07-30

I just bought this CD and I love it it's got hot remixes and it's a great song. She has done it again!! I am a huge J.lo fan and this is a great CD to have if you like her to. I hope that this will encourage everyone to buy whether your a jennifer lopez fan or not.

    2 out of 5 stars CLASSIC PLASTIC.......2005-07-21

Gershwin CD is strangely lacking in atmosphere and reference, with over an hour of Gershwin's more classical side, including Michael Tilson Thomas conducting The Columbia Jazz Band's "Rhapsody in Blue", featuring Gershwin's original 1925 piano roll, Leonard Bernstein conducting The New York Philharmonic's "An American in Paris", and composer John Williams on guitar in "A Foggy Day". With song titles like, "Medly From The Woody Allen Film 'Manhatten", at just over three minutes, and "Medly From 'Porgy and Bess'", the CD is a classy cash cow thrown together by CBS Records. Tilson Thomas' "Three Preludes for Piano", stops and takes a dramatic musical breath in the context of these slam-bang offerings. Truly bland CD liner notes by Bobby Finn and Kay Swift, whoever they may be.

    5 out of 5 stars Musical pleasure.......2001-07-16

I have always loved the Gershwin music. It seems to Americana. When I first heard the recordings of the music from the piano rolls, I was fascinated. When I then heard this album with the jazz sound and the symphony sound combined with the pure sounds from the piano rolls, I was captured by the sound. The mighty ending of The Rhapsody in Blue is as powerful as this music can be. Add songs like Summertime and the Porgy N' Bess favorites and I find that this album is just the right combination of composer, performer and directors. Michael Tilson Thomas pulls forth from the group he is directing, a crisp and powerful sound. Bernstein needs no critique. If you are a lover of Gershwin and piano music, you can't miss with this.

    5 out of 5 stars Feyer's CD is a must have.......2007-01-28

So I purchase my Nano and then easily transfer much of my "must have" music library to the 8 Mega Black Nano. The Nano makes me want to hear all my music again as I work out, etc. I ordered "must have" Feyer's Gershwin from Amazon and was lucky to get the Gershwin CD. If only they could remaster all his works onto CDs at a lower price than the $100 plus I paid. Feyer is a top addition and it reminds me of the Stanhope days and his music magic that I wish to briefly tell you.

In the latter 70s, the Stanhope weekends were a joy, buttressed by Feyer's music. He held court and the audience was captivated. He was an excellent pianist with excellent trills in the high octaves, and nice contrast with the lower ones. The Gershwin CD the piece "I Got Rhythm" reminds one of small flames jumping lightly on a log. So light, so elegant, so much in rhythm. I would take my "A" dates to the Stanhope, including my future wife of 20 plus years. After the Met Opera or ballet, I would take my dates to the Stanhope. Usually two Kier Royals, supper, wine, and dessert would accompany George's fine music. Such a rich repertory and bottomless request well that he knew with top piano skill!

Missing on the CD was his singing and funny remarks. I recall him playing `Thank Heavens For Little Girls"... they are so helpless, and then he would pick some women from the audience and repeat the word " helpless' and the everyone would laugh. My dates were the younger women in the Stanhope back then and he tended to look at my dates.....and made them feel like a princess

The Stanhope was a bit expensive but a classy place. With George, it was worth every penny. I think Gunnar ( spelling?) was the head waiter. They knew you and you did not have to ask for a certain drink as they knew your need before your request. Unlike today, waiters are more of errand boys to the kitchens. George also knew your favorites in songs.

One thing that is not obvious, despite my Ivy MBA and a good undergraduate degree, one does not learn in early years the basic American songs of Porter, Gershwin, etc. Some of my dates knew many of the words to these songs from their social events. Hence for me it was a pleasant discovery and made me grateful to the mastery of George. It opened one's appreciation to the very rich music heritage of America.

The CD in ADD format was very clear; no his; and, the accompanying musicians were well heard in CD. Enjoy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars One More Time.......2002-03-08

Anyone that likes solo piano, must have this one in their collection. Feyer was a superior pianist, and arranger. These are performances to LISTEN to. For alot less than a carton of ciggies, you can buy something good for you! Aloha

5 out of 5 stars George Feyer Plays George Gershwin.......2001-04-21

Hours sped like minutes when sitting next to the keyboard of Feyer's Piano in the Stanhope. I only wish all of his albums could be re-released and a new generation might experience this rare talent. He played with consummate skill, gentle humor and a panache that I've been unable to find anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars George Feyer Plays George Gershwin.......2000-12-26

This is undoubtedly one of the best recordings of popular Gershwin tunes. They are played with Feyer's european touch, but amazingly american in spirit. All his collections since 1951 ("Echoes of Paris", "Echoes of Broadway", "Echoes of Rome" etc.) should be re-mastered and released again, as well as his famous recordings collected in album "Cafe carlyle". It is a real music treasure.

5 out of 5 stars This is the happiest music making imaginable........1999-10-24

It's been more than 40 years since I first ran across George Feyer's "Echoes..." series of recordings on the Vox label (Echoes of Paris, Echoes of Vienna, etc.) Every month I check to see if by some miracle these recordings have been reissued, but I doubt they ever will because of their original label. In the meantime we will make do with this excellent George Gershwin album, which seems to me to come closer to his old recordings than the other stereo-era Feyer recordings now available. But will some company out there PLEASE reissue his old mono VOX recordings and spread joy through the world!

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars "A little golden clown".......2005-04-06

There were giants in those days. Two of the tallest giants of musical theatre were Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse. I first saw Anthony Newley on TV, when I was a child. It was love at first heart beat. He was a joy, and he was sad; he was an entertainer and a man of sorrow. He had this most extraordinary voice. Rich and deep and his whole being in it. Impossible to describe. These songs from "Willy Wonka" and his and Bricusse's last musical are a treasure trove. They are Newley at his finest.

"Pure Imagination" has never been lovelier. "Cheer Up, Charlie" breaks me in half. "I've Got a Golden Ticket" is a joy, here I go over the moon! And the songs "Little Golden Clown" and "Beautiful Land" (that one from "Roar of the Greasepaint..") just play over and again in my head. Stars and beautiful things and happy dreams. Delicious and delightful.

And to have the songs from the musical "It's A Sad Old Bad Old World" (the working title of the play at least)are heart's delight. We can make up our own plot from them. "It's A Musical World" just brightens the sky to blinding blue. "The Fool Who Dared to Dream" gives that forlorn and so very brave and hopeful hope. The final song, ending in the lyrics.."Daddy, can you bring me some--war" score a life. A mime, a jester, a man of the most marvelous physical interpretations, a star of movies and stage, a master singer/writer/composer. And it's here in these splendid works. An opening song, where a middle aged rock and roller still wants to write his songs for Sandy, fearing the world has passed him by. It has definitely not.

I saw Anthony Newley in "Stop the World..." at the Orpheum in Memphis. To be there, to see him in person, magic. In his white face, this Littlechap who loved too unwisely, who always hurt himself and blamed himself, but who always had a cheery note for all of us who bought his records, saw his films, danced in his music for all of our lives. A little golden clown with a sweet sly bold intense wry sometimes sardonic incredibly handsome face, and a laugh that could not make you help but feel happier. And a voice that got even better as he got older. Richer and purer toned.

Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Anthony Newley appearing at long last on CD. Watch out for the tear in his eye, for the way he spun himself into sugar and sometimes gall, the way he made himself a living breathing Everyman, for you will remember him forever. He is gone now, Mr. Anthony Newley, but for those of us lucky enough to have been his fans, he gave us a Once In a Lifetime that lasts forever. All of us fools who also fell in love too unwisely salute him.

Buy his work. Everlasting gobstoppers have never tasted so good.

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT NEWLEY TOUR-DE-FORCE~BRAVO ANTHONY!!! .......2004-12-05

Falling in love with Anthony Newley was easy for any of us who were lucky enough to see this incredible legend live in concert as there was never another performer/SINGER/songwriter quite like him! Warm and wide open with alot of heart is his rich and powerful voice that caresses then soars to the sky with breathtaking power and stunning emotional depth plus nobody could write a song quite like Anthony Newley!!! Classics like the athems "What Kind Of Fool Am I?" and "Who Can I Turn To" were always showstoppers in concert and this collection is full of great songs and superb vocal performances that are equal to these masterworks. For some strange reason American Radio would not play Tony's incredible recordings and I found this to be amazing when these two wonderful albums were released as they represent Tony Newley at his absolute peak as a composer and certainally as the ultimate singer of his great songs! Starting with an exhuberent "The Candy Man" then onto a romantic "Pure Imagination", one can see that this is a peerless artist who is going to provide a satisfying musical journey of the highest level...this collection is full of variety and glorious vocals. "Pure Imagination" is played continuously at the spectacular water and light fountain display at "The Grove" which is an exquisite new state of the art shopping complex at the old Farmers Market location in Hollywood, California and this demonstrates the timeless appeal of Anthony Newley's music and this wonderous attraction is a must see for anyone visiting Los Angeles! "Little Golden Clown" is wildly rhymthic and feels like a ride in an amusement park that you don't want to end while "Pop Goes The Weasel" is a fascinating rhythm cooker that has incredible tempo changes that are complex and amazing with a loose and funky vocal. A magnificent vocal make "Cheer Up, Charlie" the ultimate listening experience for those who love a great voice that can soar to the skies yet go to the depths emotionally! "There's No Such Thing As Love" is a gorgeous bittersweet classic that deserves to be a standard such as "Who Can I Turn To?" and would have been in better musical times than the musically tired seventies! A whimsical "The Beautiful Land", "Best Of All Worlds" and "I've Got A Golden Ticket" are all feel good sing along songs that have timeless appeal and sound as fresh and inspired today as when they were recorded some thirty years ago. Ending the "Pure Imagination" set is a magnificent Newley performance from the motion picture "Scrooge" and "I'll Begin Again" is the ultimate riveting showstopper with Anthony Newley at the peak of his remarkable power!!! "Overchewer" is a stunning tour-de-force done with great humor and pathos about a singer who has been around awhile wanting to reach a new generation with his music and this stunner is so infectious that it gives the repeat mode a real workout as the totally unique lyrics and the incredible performance from Anthony Newley are incomparable! "The People Tree" is ear candy at it finest while the pensive title song "Ain't It Funny" is a bluesy riveting winner that should have been a big hit and brought Tony a whole new phase to his brilliant career that would have reached the baby-boomer generation and made him a sensation! A soulful "Me Without You" is another one that would have gone up the charts with any exposure at all...a wild ragtime "The Good Old Bad Old Days" is a great stunner that sounds classic and "It's A Musical World" is the definitive version of this wonderous song that is like that exhilarating ride in an amusement park that you don't want to end...Bravo Tony! Another "Fool" classic is "The Fool Who Dared To Dream" as Tony weaves his magical spell through this amazing athem that once again shows this magnificent singer at his absolute peak. "Easy for You, Captain Candy" is riveting and with a complex arrangement and a soulful vocal that is all over the map and engrossing. Turning away from love, "I Do Not Love You" is a dazzling tour-de-force that showed where Tony was at this point in his life in a brilliant way as does the riveting divorce athem "What Did You Do In The Great War, Daddy" which is another complex masterpiece in a collection that is full of them! Anthony Newley was at the peak of his maturity both vocally and emotionally making this one of the greatest collections ever for anyone who enjoys the Art Of Singing at its finest and remember that this master also wrote the songs!!! Bravo Anthony Newley and we miss you alot...don't miss this thrilling and satisfying collection!!!

I am SO disappointed with this CD!! I was expecting to hear the mellifluous tunes that I have heard in so many wonderful movies and instead hear something I would expect to be called the "polka" version.

This is a pretty darn good remix! I really wanted and still do, for this to be my favouriute Jennifer Lopez single but no matter what, Play has always stood in the way. The original UK single had a remix of Play, that was remixed by the amazing Artful Dodger and it was excellent. Track 2 on this CD though is far the better. (Waiting For Tonight Hex Hector Remix.) Track 3 is the same as the track on the UK single and track 4 is a remix of Ain't It Funny, that follows the original lyrics - not the Murder Remix lyrics. Tracklisting!:-

01 Ain't It Funny (Murder Remix feat. Ja Rule and Caddillac Tah) (3.54)
02 Waiting For Tonight (Hex Hector Momentous Club Remix) (11.17)
03 Feelin' So Good (HQ2 Club Remix) (7.25)
      04 Ain't It Funny (Almighty Remix) (7.22)

This may not have any enhanced portions to this disc but it sure is good and you can get the video in plenty of other places! Even on 'The Reel Me' DVD/CD combo! You know what i'm gonna say about track 1 because i've already said it -- it is the 2nd best Jennifer single after play & Ja Rule and Caddillac Tah rule and kick ass! Track 2 is the stomper of a remix and far suppases any track on this disc, it is the best Jenny Lo remix of any track! It's good from beginning to end and a real dance anthem that Jenn now performs on stage to us today! (Shorter version of the remix.) Track 3 is a great house/club remix. The best house-style remix for 'Feelin' So Good' does not feature Big Fun and Fat Joe at all but it's so cool! Track 4 is not suprising that it is good! It takes all the murder lyrics away (boo hoo), but it is still good and places it with the originals! It's 'Ain't It Funny' remixed by almighty and is great through-out!

      Overall Score - 11/10!
      Overall Grade - A++++++++++++++++++++

It's nice to see another Jennifer Lopez single in the US again, after just a couple of previous ones being available in the US. It was a US #1 and reached #4 in the UK with 13 weeks on the UK Top 75 Charts to back to the single up. This version of 'Ain't It Funny' is WAY ahead of the original version! Track 1 from the album 'J To The L-O: The Remixes!,' special version adapted from the album J-LO (track 4). Special versions tracks 2 & 3 adapted from the album 'On The 6.' Truly brilliant & a genius song!

5 out of 5 stars J. Lo and Ja Rule strike gold again.......2002-11-08

The first single (third if you count the remixes of i'm real and waiting for tonight)off of her 2001 remix disc is one of the best tracks on the disc. Here is a track by track description of the single

      1. Ain't it funny (remix featruing Ja Rule and Caddillac Tah)
This is a great new song. It says it featureds Caddillac, but it really doesnt, it actually edits out his rap by repeating the j.lo and ja rule chorus. Pretty good overall

      2. Waiting For Tonight (Hex Hector Vocal mix extended)
By far the best jennifer lopez remix ever. This is just the full remix of the video remix. It clocks in a around ten minutes, but the length shoudlnt discourage you, it is great from begining to end.
      3. Feelin' So Good (HQ2 remix)
the best club mix for this song. i think that this should be featured on the remix disc (it did win a grammy for remixer of the year), and is the best remix of feelin so good
      4. Ain't it funny (Silks house mix)
pretty good remix of the original ain't it funny. Little borring at parts, but its only seven minutes so it doesn't end up being too long.
