One of the first albums to challenge hip-hop's machocratic sovereignty, Salt-N-Pepa's Hot, Cool & Vicious takes as its musical model Run-D.M.C.'s potent distillation of streetwise repartee, hard-ass bluster and beatbox rhythms. Determined to say it loud and say it proud, r-r-r-rappers Cheryl "Salt" James and Sandy "Pepa" Denton wield their womanhood like an urban-jungle machete, busting unfaithful lovers in "Chick on the Side," threatening female competitors "just for spite" in "I'll Take Your Man," dishing distaff disses at Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick in "The Showstopper," and condemning mindless male promiscuity in "Tramp." With its aerobic BPMs and synth-pop hook, the Top 20 hit "Push It" is the album's most obvious--and most effective--bid for dancefloor immortality. --Greg Siegel

If you "like" SNP, you will "love" this album, particularly if you enjoy the simplicity and creativeness of old school hip hop. The beats are clean, the lyrics are fun, and the variation provided by the tracks keeps the album moving. And of all, knowing the signature track "Showstopper" and how it vaulted SNP's career takes the album up a tier.

    5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-03-07

Brings me back to high school when these songs were rap anthems for us. So glad to have Amazon to buy these old skool records (as we used to call them!)

4 out of 5 stars Hot,, Cool, & Vicious debut album from the ladies........2006-05-27

When I was young I use to write down all the words to my favorite songs on this album by rewinding the cassette playa numerous times till I got it down pack.

This is one of the first albums to be released by an all-female rap group, Hot, Cool & Vicious is paced by its opening track, "Push It," one of the first rap songs to hit number one on the dance singles charts. Considering how little Salt-n-Pepa actually rap on "Push It," which is all about its instrumental hook, they maintain a surprisingly strong presence over most of Hot, Cool & Vicious.

Written and produced by Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor and recorded by the original Salt-N-Pepa line up -- Cheryl "Salt" James, Sandy "Pepa" Denton and Latoya "Spinderella" Hanson (later replaced by Deidre "Spinderella" Roper) -- HOT, COOL & VICIOUS made Salt-N-Pepa the first female rappers to earn a Grammy nomination.

No, they aren't technical virtuosos on the mic, but their fairly basic raps are carried off with brash confidence and enthusiasm. Some of the other key tracks borrow ideas from outside sources: the single "Tramp" is a rap remake of the Otis & Carla soul classic, and "The Show Stopper" is an answer record to Doug E. Fresh's "The Show." The duo's sass comes across very well on "My Mic Sounds Nice" and "I'll Take Your Man," and they're equally assertive on "Chick on the Side."

If I would have to choose my favorite party tracks would be "Chick on the Side," "My Mike Sounds Nice," "Tramp" and "Push It," which topped the pop charts in 1987.

SALT N PEP DEFINATELY ARE ONE OF THE CORNERSTONES OF FEMALE RAP AND HIP HOP PERIOD. STILL TILL THIS DAY HAVE I SEEN OR HEARD A FEMALE GROUP ROCK THE MIC AS MANY YEARS AS THESE WOMEN. I LOVE THIS ALBUM MOST OF ALL. I THINK THEIR SOUND WAS MORE B BOYISH WITH THE 1ST SPIN THAN THE 2ND BUT THEY STILL MANAGED TO MAKE HITS... THEY ARE FEMALE LEGENDS IN THE RAP GAME !!!!!

American punk rock seems to get more watered down with each passing year. Leave it to the Swedes to remind the USA that we were once the home of the Stooges and the MC5. The Hives' Veni Vidi Vicious owes its very being to Detroit's punk genesis; they may be decades too late, but the Hives capture the zeal and fury perfectly. "Die, All Right," an angry rant against capitalism, spikes the aural brew with frontman Howlin' Pelle Almqvist's nasty nasal shouts. Just as rocking is "Hate to Say I Told You So," which boasts a clunky punk groove and delightfully dark lyrics such as "Do what I please gonna spread the disease because I wanna / Gonna call all the shots for the no's and the not's." Veni Vidi Vicious clocks in at just under half an hour--a perfectly timed charge of codeine-meets-caffeine and decibels-meets-delicious-rock. --Jason Josephes

4 out of 5 stars Putting the "rage" back in Garage Rock.......2007-02-09

Plain and simple, this album is loud, heavy-hitting garage rock at its finest. From the very outset, The Hives punch you in the face with a relentless stream of power-chords, pounding drums, and "screw you!" vocals. The band let's you catch your breath for a moment on their rendition of "Find Yourself Another Girl" but then quickly resumes the onslaught before eventually finishing up with the catchy "Supply & Demand". If you heard "Main Offender" and/or "Hate To Say I Told You So" and thought "Hey, this ain't too bad", then do yourself a favor and pick up Veni Vidi Vicious today. Don't be fooled by reviewers who claim The Hives are nothing but a ripoff of The Who, The MC5, etc...let's not forget, those bands were ripoffs too.

3 out of 5 stars Totally Fun but not Genius.......2006-03-20

I don't know why this album in particular has instigated this tirade from me but for some reason all the bad reviews have really pissed me off. For whatever reason I'm in the habit of reading the lowest rated reviews of albums I like first. Usually I just laugh at the ignorant fools who say stuff like, "The Velvet Underground is the most over rated band in history," and you won't find a more vigorous Velvets defender than me. But the handful of lousy reviews for this album, which I don't even give 4 stars myself, really made me mad.
First of all, I think that in 2006 it's really idiotic to dismiss a band because they sound like another band. So the Hives are obviously derivative of the MC5, the Kinks, Da Stooges, etc. and those bands did it first and better. Of course they did... THEY'RE THE F**KING MC5! But you know what? The MC5 hasn't made any new music since 1971. So any band that worships them as much as I do is cool with me. As long as they don't rip off riffs directly I'm ok with "derivative". Because if you like that old-school crummy rock it's hard to come by and you should be dying for more. Besides in this day and age it's almost impossible to NOT be derivative of something (before you jump down my throat, I know there are exceptions: Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, Tom Waits - off the top of my head). As long as it's done right, with the appropriate reverence/humor, it's perfectly acceptable to wear your influences on your sleeve.
Secondly, when people complain that a 30 minute rock album is a rip off because it's too short just tells me that those idiots have absolutely no understanding of rock-n-roll at all let alone the history of the music business. You see, in the glory days before Compact Discs destroyed music 30 - 40 minutes was the most music you could cram on an LP without losing fidelity. More than that and you had to either cram the grooves so close you lost sound or you had to move it on to a second LP which was prohibitively expensive. That's part of the reason some of those first 2 lp albums are real classics, i.e. The White Album, Exile on Maine Street, Blonde On Blonde. [Actually the White Album is a bad example because it was the first album on Apple Records but you get my point.] In order to convince the label to put out two LPs you really had to have something to say. Otherwise your album got cut to fit the medium, therefore you left the weaker songs off the record. The CD's 75 minute format allowed artists to become very poor self-editors. Whatever crap they recorded got slapped on the CD. Rarely is there a 75, or even 60 minute album that is good all the way through but, now, the music buying public, in true American-Consumer fashion, has come to demand quantity over quality. "If I'm going to spend $18 on a CD I better be getting 75 minutes of music even if 45 minutes of that is pabulum I'll never listen to." (For a few years a backlash to this has been building, hence the success of iTunes.)
Anyway, my long rambling point is that - More Is Rarely Better! The Hives' 30 Minute Veni Vidi Vicious is the perfect length. No filler. No tedious solos that need to be skipped over. The longest song clocks in at 3:22; no time to get bored here. Just 12 short kick-ass examples of garage rock in almost it's purest form. I say "almost" because, despite what some reviewers here say, this album is overproduced. Personally, I really cherish that recorded-in-my-parent's-basement kind of feel to my crappy rock records; this album is obviously meant to be a little bit more radio friendly. I can't fault them for that but it's just not my thing.
Bottom line is that this is a fun record and I think that a majority of the reviews have missed this point. If you understand that when I call some music "crappy" I don't necessarily mean it derogatorily or if you appreciate Lenny Kaye's Nuggets Collection or if you have a collection of cherished 45s you bought at local rock shows then I trust this album will make you smile. No, it's not as good as the MC5 or the Stooges or what ever high water marks you want set for Rock... But what is? If you can't get over that I can only suggest your life would be much happier if you get off that pretentious pole you've got lodged in your rectum.

    4 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!!.......2006-03-18

i love the Hives. This album is so fast and loud and not like anything else around today, i don't understand how you could not like it. Sure Howlin' Pelle is a bit hard to understand, but he's so high energy and amazing! if you like music, you definetly need to own this CD

    5 out of 5 stars ROCK OUT!!.......2005-11-18

Its been a while since a band like the Hives have been around. Bands liike the Stooges and the New York Dolls were bands that had the energy, the anger, and the talent to pioneer punk rock. Raw Power by the Stooges especially showed what a breakneck speed thrashing guitars, anthemic, though at times repetitive drum work, and a screeching voice can do. The Hives remind me so much of these great bands, and they certainly hold their own.

This album is packed into a half hour, but after that short half hour, you will feel like you need to sit down somewhere and take a breather. The screaming, breaking vocals of Howlin' Pelle never ceases to amaze me. One reviewer stated that musically this album was amazing, but the voice was horrible. But in response to that, how many other singers could keep up with their music, and maintain the energy??

This is such a fun album. Some of my favorites are the anti-capitlaist Die, Alright!, Main Offender, Hate to Say I Told You So, and The Hives Introduce the Metric System of Time. one thing to know about this album, not to stray from the quality of the album, is that it just might have been the Hives golden age. Their debut Barely Legal is faster, harder, and much sloppier. this approach has its appeal, but it isn't the amazing punk rock record that this is. Their followup to this album, Tyrannosaurus Hives, was good, but it seemed to have mellowed some. I guess most bands don't feel they can only put out continually crazy albums, and i am proud of them for experimenting with more serious forms of rock. but their specialities are seen here. so pick this up, and prepare to fall in love as you are rocked straight out of your socks! (heh heh sorry for the bad pun, it just seemed to fit!)

    2 out of 5 stars Ouch.............2005-09-18

This album is probably THE best instrumental album I've ever heard, and it's ausom how this band is from Sweden. So I always find myself thinking what a kik a** band when I start listening to the track, while the bass is rocking like crazy and the drums are doing godlike things, and then, I face sinks, as the vocals come in....
The vocals in this album are the worst I've ever heard, and i really hate to say that. The instrumentals are so incredible, but this vocalist hurts your ears, and it won;t grow on you. I've tried, many times, to love this allbum, and i just can't, I wish this band would find a new vocalist so I could worship them.

    5 out of 5 stars A flagship effort for modern-era Skynyrd.......2006-09-25

We all know and honor the Skynyrd line-up when Ronnie was running the show. But I'm here to tell ya, Skynyrd is still alive and well. In fact, enjoying a resurgence in their popularity. I believe this cd played a major role in that. IMHO, Vicious Cycle is to the modern era Skynyrd what Street Survivors was to the "original" line-up. (I mean, Skynyrd's had about 30 or so personnel changes at this point).
It's easy to see the influence that Ricky and Hughie had on Skynyrd with this album. Good, driving, southern rock 'n' roll. I think if listeners would give them a chance, they would find some songs on here that would stand the test of time like some of their classics. Red, white, and blue comes to mind as well as That's how I like it. The way, crawl, and all funked up are some personal favorites. Can't wait for their next studio album, even though it won't have Hughie this time. I'd like to see him come back to the fold after all is said and done with the Outlaws.

4 out of 5 stars Johnny, give the band some too.......2006-09-04

Even after all the lineup changes wrought by tragedy and time, Skynyrd is still one helluva band. It's a shame that Ronnie's brother Johnny's ego is so evident on these tracks. Really, does every song's intro music need to be trampled by the same old vocal interjections (something like "hmm, hmm", which I guess is a subdued "yeah, yeah")? C'mon, give the band a chance!

5 out of 5 stars Lynyrd Skynyrd back with a little more!! .......2006-02-24

Awesome album! I have been a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan all my life. I have to say that this album is one of the best. Red, White, and Blue is what southern rock is all about!!!!

2 out of 5 stars MAYBE time for Skynyrd to hang things Up?........2005-09-03

I have been a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan since 1989 when I bought a
compilation type CD that was simply titled "What's Your Name",
I fell in love with "Simple Man". I Now tend to agree more and
more[with the last 2-3 albums they released] that it maybe time
for Lynyrd Skynyrd to call it quits all together or at least in
the way of studio recordings, at least in the way they have been
doing, let me explain. Lynyrd Skynyrd's last 2-3 studio albums
have sounded more like a "country rock" band[mainly in the way
of lyrics] then the great, almost hard rock they were in the
1970's. Johnny Van Zant is not a Rock N' Roll singer really and
he is even less of a Rock N' Roll writer in my opinion. What
really get's Me is that the band had always stood[through the
years with Ronnie Van Zant especially] up until recently for
being "rebels" and sort of "dissidents", their whole history is
built on it really if You think about it, it's keeping that in
mind is why I hate the "new" Lynyrd Skynyrd has taken this path
of what sounds to me like "ass kissing" of the Conservative "War
Loving" right wing that they have and not just by writing the
song "Red,White & Blue", the song in theory is fine, it's just
a few lines in the song itself plus other things the band has
said and done since writing this song that has me aggravated as
a long time fan. I just wish to recommend that if You think this
is THE SAME Lynyrd Skynyrd band of "Things Goin' On", IT'S NOT!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Skynyrd to Date.......2005-08-09

Never have I heard an album so pumped full of meaningful lyrics, powerful guitars, and sheer talent. As the latest addition to the Skynyrd collection, this album proves that by turning up the amps and just ROCKING, a band can surpass any and all previous efforts. There is not a single song on this album that goes below a 4 star rating in my book. With solid rock tunes like "The Way," "All Funked Up," "Jake," and "That's How I Like It," Skynyrd shows off its 30 years of development, even if only 2 of the members have experienced those 30 years. The post-crash additions add a great new sound to the band, particularly Johnny's gritty-yet-still-pleasant vocals. The album features some great "boogey" tunes, such as "Rockin' Little Town," "Sweet Mama," and "Pick 'em Up," all of which are quite catchy and get the feet tapping and the heads bobbing. Finally, the album throws in a nice mix of anthemic, country-esque, softer tunes, such as "Red, White, and Blue," "Lucky Man," and "Life's Lessons." This album is an excellent choice for diehard fans, and can make a diehard out of somebody new to the band. Take my word for it. It did for me. Now all we've got to do is get the band to play these songs LYVE!

It was released during a golden period for dance music (2000-2002), and it has a lot of the biggest hits from that very fine error of club hits. This is a must have for any dance music fanatic. Be sure and pick it up.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Compilation!!!!!!!!!.......2003-10-26

This compilation is incredible i bought it almost 2 years ago and i still listen to it. cd 1 is great untill about half way through it but cd 2 is so amazing that it makes up for the 2nd half of disc 1. If you love hard trance than buy this cd.

1 out of 5 stars SAVE YOUR MONEY!.......2003-01-11

There's maybe one decent track on this cd. Its so not worth it. I wouldn't call it dance music either. Its more like top 40s remixed whatever. uht!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Fo Clubbin'!!!.......2002-10-25

This CD is so awesome! Songs like Amber's "Yes", Aubrey's "Stand Still", Iio's "Rapture", To be Able To Love, Resurrection, Forever, and Light A Rainbow: ROCK MY WORLD! This is one of the best techno CD's of the century. The songs I don't really like are Trippin, and La La Land. They are a discrace to music maker's everywhere! Anyway, all together, this is an awesome CD. If you like it, you have to check out DJ Encore and Engelina's award winning album "Intuition." Now that is quality listening!

4 out of 5 stars I'm Sure Johnny Has Better.......2002-10-24

I'm a huge fan of "FAST" (Disc 2), and that is the reason I bought the CD. "FAST::Transmission" is in my collection of vinyl and I was just curious to see how Vicious used the song. Well, impressed for the most part. The rest of the CD is marginal, but well put together. Disc 1 contains many, many "Dance" tunes and Disc 2 contains much, much Trance/House. I guess I'm rating and reviewing Disc 2, but hey, this CD is very uplifting, and I would dance to it. Check it out, I consider this CD SAFE!

    Quoted from another reviewer:
    -------------------------------
Having not grown up in the 70's, I was able to be completely impartial and take a look at both singers. I have to say that after hearing Van Zant, their new singer, whatever his name is, it really sounds like the group picked the fattest drunk loser in the crowd and said, you wanna sing songs and shoot up with us? I mean, this guy is worse than reality tv. No tallent. What does this guy do for this group? Nothing. Dont buy this cd, or anything after Van Zant. The group should have died in that crash along with the man. Harsh, I know, but true. If your still looking for Skynard CD's I recommend Self Pronounced and Second Helping. After that if you still want some Down south Junking... Check out Creedence Clearwater Revival.
    -------------------------------
The singer is Ronnie Van Zant's younger brother, Johnnie Van Zant.

This live album is an incredible one. It proves that Johnnie has done an incredible job filling in the shoes of his older brother. I am sure Ronni would be very proud of his brother, and I am also sure Ronnie himself would have chosen no one else to fill his shoes.

5 out of 5 stars Skynyrds as Good as ever.......2005-05-21

I think this is a GREAT CD. I also have the DVD. Can't believe some people don't like Johnny. I think his brother Ronnie would be really proud of him. He sings great, even the old songs. As for not taking his singing seriously. He just has a good time with it. And Rickey Medlocke is AMAZING. I've been a Skynyrd fan for a lot of years. I think they are as Great now as they were before, if not better... lots of energy.

5 out of 5 stars Skynyrd is back.......2005-04-15

I have always been a Skynyrd fan the first band was right where my head was at back then and I still love to hear the old tunes but the new band is singing about what life is like now. Check out the Vicious Cycle and Last Rebel CD's as well.
This Live CD is mostly covers of Ron's tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Live Skynyrd Boy!.......2005-04-03

These boys have been doing this for many years and still have it. I went backstage at their Pompano Beach, FL show. They had Maryland corn, Old Bay, jumbo lump, Thrasher's french fries- all Maryland style. Then the concert was unbelievable. Rebel flags everywhere, boy. Great music. Couple of fights broke out but it was all good.

4 out of 5 stars Still Goin' Freebirds.......2005-03-17

I saw them on there comeback tour and wept.( So good) They have kept going and frankly got better. With Ricky, especially, skynyrd are are very tight band. Listen and enjoy!

I consider this work to be their best.No moronic lyrics here. A heartfelt recording that will stand the test of time. Just listen to the song "Children".

3 out of 5 stars Not near as good or inspired as their self-titled effort.......2003-02-15

I hate it when good bands with a lot of talent suddenly decide to change their sound drastically. That's what Vicious Rumours did with Welcome to the Ball. They took the soaring, melodic, graceful quality out of their songwriting, and opted to go for a hardcore thrash/speed metal sound instead. Big mistake. This album lacks the inspiration and creativity that so characterized their self-titled effort. While there are a couple of good tracks, it's plain to see the magic is gone here. But then, if you like your metal thrashy and pointless, you might like this. Check out their self-titled first. You won't be sorry.

3 out of 5 stars No ringing endorsement here for this two-headed oddity.......2005-07-13

This strange conjoined CD combines the separate Streetwalker's releases "Red Card" and "Vicious But Fair" and has actually been around in one form or another on various European labels for several years, but at a high cost. Maybe this latest official release is the result of lawyers muddying things up, and one wonders about why these are paired together because "Red Card" has been available as a CD on another label for several years.

Here, tracks 1-8 are from "Red Card" and 9-16 from "Vicious But Fair." Missing here is the very good bonus track Hole in My Pocket that is included in the standalone release of "Red Card." Hence, that version of Red Card, not this one, is what Chapman-Whitney aficionados should seek.

The Streetwalkers brain trust of Roger Chapman (vocal and tambourine) and Charlie Whitney (guitars), plus holdover Bob Tench on guitars and vocals, for some reason jettisoned their earlier---and in my opinion better---rhythm section of John Plotel and Nico. The new lineup on board for the band's final studio session "Vicious But Fair" featured David Dowle on drums; Michael Feat on bass and a full-time keyboardist, Brian Johnstone.

Chapman's vocals are in typical manic form, Whitney rips off some decent riffs, but Tench seems relegated to a supporting role. The overall results, however, are decidedly mixed, and at time down right dreadful.

Can't Come In with the great interplay between Whitney and Tench; the epic Diceman, an overlooked gem from this time, and Sam (Maybe He Can Come to Some Arrangement) featuring some great second vocals by Bob Tench, approach the level of the songs found on the earlier Streetwalker's CDs.

The less said the better about the remaining tracks from "Vicious But Fair" but most lack any real firepower, many are misogynist, and some sound down right tired, as if the band had lost its way or perhaps couldn't figure out how to focus its energy in this expanded lineup or summon the enthusiam to fire off a few salvos in the direction of the punk rock scene.

(Rather than rehash what I or others have already posted at Red Card, I would instead refer you to the reviews for that CD.)

I think the cuts from "Red Card" merit four stars, but the inconsistent songs on "Vicious But Fair" deserve only a pair of stars. Hence, no ringing endorsement here for this two-headed oddity, though this may be the only chance hard core fans have to get "Vicious But Fair" on CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best ever.......2003-08-21

There are certain records/cd's that have changed my life and this is one of them. I first saw the Treepeople live without ever hearing any of their music. Their live show show was enough to compell me to buy this. After a few listens, I was hooked. They combine great hooks and good song writing to make tremendous music. They were one of the best bands of this era, yet virtually unknown. All the people who get a chance to own or listen to this should consider themselves lucky.

5 out of 5 stars Addition to below..........2003-01-31

Great album. Opposed to what was said below, indy rock WHEN there was still indy rock.

5 out of 5 stars stop comparing this to built to spill!!!.......2001-08-16

this is not built to spill! this was a prior band to built to spill and a much better one at that, you indie rock toad...! although the treepeople fell off after dug left, this band was great for 2 reasons: dug AND scott. oh, and the other guys. this band should be up there with bands like dinosaur jr. and the pixies. indie rock before there was indie rock. but this stuff had some balls. this is their best cd, but everything else they did ruled too, with exception to the last album maybe. and if you can find it, get the original "guilt, regret" cd on toxic shock with lots more 7" stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Sum of Dug's best work.......2000-04-25

Out of all the Treepeople albums, this is the best by far. Hearing this one, I would expect the others to be great also, but that is not the case in my opinion. If you are a fan of Dug's work, such as songs like "On a Tip" (a Halo Benders must), "Car," or the amazing "Forget Remember When" (b-side of "Carry the Zero" -- another amazing song), then you shall like this. The majority of the songs are Dug's, and that's a good thing. The next best thing is Perfect from Now On, or...and...

5 out of 5 stars this early stuff is better..........1998-05-19

The prior incarnation of Built To Spill, this group has a very peculiar sense of song structure and they know how to keep the energy of a song intact until the end. I like this a lot, since all these guys have carved a mark in the Pacific Northwest scene and this elucidates their first attempt at their incredibly solid, peculiar rock.
