An Alchemy of Antiquity.......2005-10-11
The Sephardim were the Jews of Spain. They picked up many musical elements on their journey there. The sum is very much an alchemy of antiquity. It's got Greek modes, North African percussion, Turkish/Arabic melodies and a bit of Western European refinement. The original Jewish component is the lyrical text which was first sung by women around the house. After being steeped in the culture of Andalusian Spain for a few centuries it allowed more and more instrumental phrases. And since this was secular music, it was acknowledged and enjoyed by everyone at this place in time -- Muslims, Jews and Christians. The ensemble who performed these pieces did a great job, utilizing completely acoustic and culuturally-respective instruments. You can't beat the price either!
easily the most formidable instrumentalists in early music.......2001-08-07
Note, however, that Sephardic music is NOT verifiably medieval, having been recorded only in the 20th century. Also note that Sephardic songs are/were rarely accompanied by instruments (all the arrangements here are instrument-heavy). Nonetheless, the fact remains that Michael Posch, Marco Ambrosini, Riccardo Delfino, and Thomas Wimmer are among the very few truly brilliant early music players at large. Their names may never be trumpeted by early music critics, but that's because said critics tend to be desiccated scholars instead of impassioned musicians (rather like most of the performers they critique). This CD features lots of compelling improvisations and extended solos -- including one, "kavaldulka", that's just from another world. Purists be damned: the musicianship is too good to be missed! btw, the ensemble is also known as Unicorn and Oni Wytars.
Ladino-Ensemble Accentus.......2000-05-19
Of all the Ladino/Sephardic music I have come across, this is one of the most lovingly crafted compilations. The ensemble treats every song with respect and care, and plays them with great spirit. The songs chosen were also organized in a way that helps to reflect the beauty of the music. Absolutely enchanting!
Love that fiddle!.......2000-05-10
I agree with the other reviews here; this is an excellent CD, especially given the bargain price. I love the fiddling on this disc in particular - it's a must-listen for any fiddlers looking to expand their horizons. Great rhythm throughout, too, and the recording quality is fantastic; the music really comes alive in stereo. Highly recommended.
Can't top this one!.......1999-12-19
The above review hits the nail on the head. What I especially enjoy are the inventive and highly rhythmic arranagements that bring out the full variety, verve, spirit and beauty of this special music.
With the bargain price this is a good way to exoplore this genre of music.

Customer Reviews:
A GREAT ALBUM.......2007-04-29
The first 6 songs on this album are all fantastic. The fact that the rest of the album is disposable is regrettable, but should not keep you from buying the album. I have most of Split Enz's original vinyl, all of their original cds, and all but 2 of the new remasters, and I'll comment on the remastering in a later review. AllMusic (the website whose reviews are always first on itunes) makes a note of Tim Finn's departure and consequently Neil Finn taking over. I wouldn't have known it from listening.
Worth noting - the extra track on my cd is called "Mr. Catalyst" not "Next Exit," and it, unfortunately belongs to that category of songs you won't listen to often. Also, personally I prefer this version of "I Walk Away" to the version recorded on Crowded House's debut cd, but I'm glad to have multiple versions of this great song. In sum, if you like Split Enz from True Colours forward, you'll like this one.
Final Enz album isn't quite up to the previous releases .......2007-04-24
There's a hole in the river where Tim Finn's contributions used to lie and he's sorely missed on the first and only Enz album without its founding member. While Neil steps admirably to the forefront with 7 strong songs, the album lacks the edge the band had when Tim was a member. It's inconsistent. "Breaking My Back" starts off promising enough although it's mid-80's production touches gives away the era it was recorded in. It's still a solid Neil Finn tune. We get an inferior but interesting early version of "I Walk Away" (that would also be on Neil's superb album debut Crowded House album which follow this one). I don't have the "Rear Enz" release but evidently there are a number of version of "I Walk Away" that Neil and the band attempted before recording this version.
Don't get me wrong, "See Ya Round" is a fine album by the quintet it just isn't as groundbreaking or as consistent as their best albums. Neil does a good job with leading the band and his material is definitely the best on here. The filler by the other members is the main reason why this deserves there stars. On the other hand, the sound is outstanding and the single bonus track excellent.
"Doctor Love" is the type of dark anti-love song that Neil would do well later with Crowded House. "One Mouth Is Fed" has a nice dramatic arrangement and is one of the best songs on the album. "Years Go By" is a nice ballad by Finn and Eddie Rayner. The bulk of the remainder of the album features songs written by each member of the band some quite good and some little more than filler. The prize on this remastered edition is Tim's swan song single with the band "Next Exit"(which oddly is included here vs. on "Conflicting Emotions" which is from the same year). With its delightful music hall piano opening, the song takes off.
We get the original lyrics, photos but no liner notes discussing the band's last studio album and Neil's decision to fold the band after the tour to support this album.

rohn is one hell of a player wiht a voice that soars.......1999-05-07
this is a easy cd to get into if you like jazz or mellow style r&b. the man guitar style is as gentle as the summer night. but rohn can also get down and funky with those strings chek out it all in you or brown sugar, sweet nadine is my favorite. rohn is the bigman with the gentle touch.
the music is very smooth........1999-03-09
Rohn shows us that he is one of the hottest studio artists around. The tracks are tight and very smooth. If you haven't heard of this cat you got to check the brother out. Rohn is definately one of the smoothest guitarists out there on the streets. Guitar fans will be taken back by his hot licks. You got to check this cat out at Rudys in New haven on Monday nights.

Album Description
With Tim Finn departing for a solo career, Neil Finn takes charge of the aging band for their final studio album. While not living up to the band's previous brilliance, songs such as "Years Go By," "One Mouth Is Fed," and an early version of "I Walk Away" are delightful Finn compositions. Side two features songs written by each of the remaining members. Released only in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
Customer Reviews:
Despite what you may have heard, this album is great.......2004-10-31
I've not heard a lot of postive reviews of this album. Even Split Enz themselves disavows this album as "schizophrenic" in the liner notes to their "History Never Repeats" compliation album. Frankly, I don't understand why. Granted, it is different than most Enz albums. The songs on it are nowhere near as pop-accessible as some of their earlier efforts like "I Got You" or "Hard Act to Follow", but they continue in the Split Enz mold of intelligent pop. Songs like "Adz". "Kia Khia", "I Walk Away", "Breaking my Back" and "One Mouth is Fed" would have become classics had they received any airplay. If you're an Enz fan and you've been avoiding this album because you've heard unflattering reviews, you are depriving yourself of one the band's greatest projects. This album deserves another chance. Especially from the band itself.
5 good songs.......2004-09-15
The first five songs are decent Neil Finn tunes, the rest are filler mainly written by the others members of the band. The first five songs get 5 stars, the rest 1 star so it evens out to 3 stars.
Split Enz Pulls It Together..........2000-06-07
What should have been a farewell album as uneventful as "Conflicting Emotions," instead evolved into a joyous musical journey that causes the listener to be surprised that the Enz broke up after this endeavour. Tim Finn's exit seems to have spurred the remaining Enzes into a freewheeling, yet well-crafted group of songs.
Of course, Neil Finn is the standout here. "Breakin' My Back" is a great intro, with a heckuva musical hook, and the version of "I Walk Away" that follows is much better than even the one of the first Crowded House album. Eddie Rayner's "The Lost Cat" is the best instrumental he ever contributed, and Nigel Griggs' "Adz" makes you wish he had written a few more songs during his tenure with the band.
I can't recommend this CD enough. Who would have ever thought that Split Enz without Tim Finn could be so dynamic? I sure didn't. It seems Tim's leaving freed the Enz up... sort of a shame that this did not signal a new era for Split Enz. But, boy, what a helluva swan song.
See Ya Round.......2000-01-21
If you've ever enjoyed a Split Enz or Crowded House song, you need this disc. This is a great one to play as you drive, turn it up! After each listening, I feel as though I've just watched a terrific epic movie. Leave out the last track, "Ninnie Knees Up" and it's even better. Just classic, absolutely tight, well produced - and to think it's been treated as a throw away. No chance! It's one of my favorites!
Neil begins to branch out........1998-12-26
In this last album, The end of the "Enz" is a major theme throughout the album. Without, his brother Tim on this album, Neil begins to experiment with sounds, styles and lyrics, sometimes with success or times not. What is noticeable is the underlying "Crowded House" direction that is starting to evolve. Also, worth the buy is the song "I Walk Away", which is found re-done on 1986's "Crowded House". Here you get the wonderful Split Enz stamp to it.
