Superb la Rue Mass fails to communicate.......2002-01-13

It is unfortunate that the present recording is the only one available of this beautiful and highly approachable Mass by the still under-rated Pierre de la Rue. The singing is very ordinary, with poor balance, intonation and ensemble. The vexed issue of 'musica ficta' is also poorly handled, making this performance almost unlistenable to someone - like me - with particular ideas on this subject. The Lamentations are no better, I am afraid.

The music of La Rue is not as well-known as it should be, but perhaps the next wave of early music recordings will rectify this. The music, especially the Lamentations, is somber and haunting, with some arresting (and forward-looking) chromaticisms. I wanted to like this CD, but unfortunately this ensemble is plagued throughout by noticeably sour intonation, especially the baritone (Billingsley). This has the effect of making one extremely uneasy and edgy while listening: the sublime harmonic progressions that are the core of this music miss their mark and never quite jell. That's really too bad, because Moll's reading is largely competent and emotive. Wait for another recording.

Who IS This Guy??!!.......2002-12-10

How wonderful it was that I stumbled upon this CD quite by accident! Kevin Glenn has an incredibly beautiful, yet unique voice and he uses it with force. He doesn't sound like anyone else out there yet somehow he sounds strangely familiar. His songs are excellent, each one evoking a different emotion and response. He moves effortlessly from pop (Love's That Way, Brooklyn Bridge) to rock (The Game) to folk/pop (Lovely People) to great drama (Dollar and a Cigarette) and these are only a few songs from the CD. There is no real production on this CD as it's just piano and vocals and I would like to hear a band on some of these songs. But that's just a picky point and somehow part of the CDs charm. It's really good and a very pleasant surprise.

I received this fantastic cd early this fall and have not taken it out of my car cd player. Kevin has jumped out of all musical categories to create an original style that defies labeling.
Kevin's lyrics capture the souls of love and life and they invite the listener to become a part of it all. The keyboards throughout the cd gives it an intimate feel as if Kevin is in your own home singing and playing the piano just for you.
I am just amazed that there is someone who finally decided to create something so wonderfully unique that it has to be a dream! So PLEASE don't pinch me!
