Nicholas Hytner's new musical drama Center Stage focuses on the competitive world of professional dance and, like Fame before it, features plenty of music meant to keep your feet moving. The Red Hot Chili Peppers' cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" and the Stevie Wonder-influenced Jamiroquai's two contributions would've found better company among the classical works of Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev featured in the movie than with the pop product that fills this soundtrack. New teen sensation Mandy Moore bookends the album with "I Wanna Be with You," featured both as straight pop confection and as a slightly techno-ed remix (the Soul Solution Mix). This time, the Diane-Warren-songwriter-for-hire tune is the ballad "If I Was the One," performed perfunctorily by the Baltimore duo Ruff Endz. The rest is the teen quartet P.Y.T., undistinguished stylists such as Ashley Ballard and Cyrena, and a Michael Jackson tune from Bad. When I first saw the movie, I was skeptical about the music. I was expecting the soundtrack to have all of the classical stuff that had been used for the more mainstream performances. Instead, they included songs like First Kiss and I Wanna Be With You (which I have to say is not my favorite song). All in all, a well-rounded soundtrack. I'm really glad they left Come Baby Come on the soundtrack. 4 stars.
Disappointments: They left "Candy" off the soundtrack, and put on "I Wanna Be With You." Small mistake there.

Great Soundtrack.......2004-02-21

The Soundtrack was as good as the movie with a few exceptions.

I could do without the Latino song "Come Baby Come" which not many people like to listen to unless dancing in a Salsa bar. Also one of the better songs I beleive it's called "Candy" is missing from the soundtrack. This would be the song during the warm-up at the dance studio. Why must they cut songs that should be on the soundtracks out of them?

great for a workout at the gym.......2003-05-25

After seeing the film 'center stage' I fell in love with the music and immediantly went out and bought the soundtrack. The cd consists and very dancable tracks that can be played over and over again. Some of the best would have to be those featured at the end of the film, Micheal Jackson's classic 'The way you make me feel', the beautiful ballad 'If I was the one' by ruff endz and the sizzleing dance anthem 'canned heat', performed by Jamiroquai. These would be my pick of the bunch. Special mention should go to Mandy Moore, whose 'I wanna be with you' is a perfect piece of pop ballad heaven and fits nicely into the film. The talented group P.Y.T contribute a couple of songs, the pick of these would have to be 'We're Dancing' which is a wonderful addition to the album with its smooth sound and catchy lyrics. 'Cosmic girl' by Jamiroquai and 'Higher ground' by the red hot chilli peppers are also worth a mention. This album is so good it practically lives in my cd player and is always being borrowed by my friends. Overall this is one heck of a great album!

Awesome Dance/Workout/Just chillin' music!.......2003-05-21

The movie was so incredible that it made you want to dance forever...what could be better to dance to than the soundtrack! Granted, not all of the songs are "dancy" (and of course, "Candy" is missing) but the ones that aren't are still awesome background "hanging out" songs.
There's a song for every mood on here....from loving and longing for someone (If I was the One, A Girl Can Dream, First Kiss, I Wanna Be With You).....to ecstatic affection for one's best friend(s) (Friends Forever).....to power-workout music (Higher Ground).....to confidence of one's own sex appeal and/or abilities (Cosmic Girl, Get Used to This, Don't Get Lost in the Crowd)......to dancing for the sheer love of dancing music (Canned Heat, We're Dancing...and the salsa sounds of Come Baby Come).
If you loved the movie, chances are you'll be inspired by this CD!

Ripping Slide Guitar Blues.......2006-02-14

I've always been an admirer of Roy Rogers - and I love slide guitar blues - a few of the current best purveyors being Johnny Winter, Sonny Landreth, Rory Block, John Mooney, Dave Hole, and Robert Randolph (pedal steel). Previously, some of Rogers' studio work has been a bit sterile, and sometimes his vocals can be wearing. However, in this case, Roy Rogers has set the standard in the warm, live setting of the Sierra Nevada Brewery "Big Room". All of the interaction with his longtime partner, Norton Buffalo, and the Delta Rhythm Kings, and the audience getting into it, make for an exciting listen. His slide guitar really shimmers and shakes, and all of the cuts (except for one), which were previously recorded on his other albums, really benefit from this live presentation. The recording quality itself is excellent. If you see this album - Get It!

A great show tunes album disguised as a "Christian Music" CD.......2007-04-02

This album is probably cataloged in the "Inspirational" or "Christian Music" category but it also belongs in the "Broadway and Show Music" category. Otherwise most secular music lovers would miss out on hearing a beautiful voice sing some wonderful arrangements of both well-know and often overlooked music of the New York and London stage.

While tenor Amerson runs a Ministry, and quotes bible verses in the liner notes for each song, the name of God rarely appears in any of the 18 songs (including eight that are cleverly grouped as medleys.). You know many of these. Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera and West Side Story provide the standards. But there are lesser-known songs from Titanic - The Musical and The Secret Garden as well. And any singer who puts a song by David Friedman ("We Can Be Kind" from the concert performance Listen To My Heart is here) gets bonus points from me.

The orchestral arrangements are properly balanced with Amerson's voice and his vocal range is wide and the high notes smooth.

I admit I can do without more versions of the "hits" from Phantom and Les Mis, but they are popular. If those are the musical styles you enjoy, then you won't be disappointed with this CD - and you'll be exposed to some news songs as well. Sonically it's a pleasure to hear. And you can also pass on reading the liner notes.

This is a wonderful CD filled with lesser-known show tunes sung by a certifiable pop legend, Helen Reddy. Her rich, articulte and unmistakably distinct voice, with that legendary perfect-pitch, is well-suited to these songs, and the orchestrations are first class. Helen Reddy dropped out of the music scene in the 80's and has been deeply missed by her legions of fans. I just got this brilliant CD yesterday and let me just say this is a brilliant CD.

Helen's voice sounds much better today then it did back in the 70's normally its the other way around!!!!

Listening to her version of Knowing When To Leave, My Friend, The Writing Is On The Wall, & her heart felt rendition of "A Boy Like You" is just lovely you can tell that song is a personal message to her own son and her rendition of "Tell Me Its Not True" is just pure heaven. & Surrender I had already owned the remixed dance version by Helen of this song which I love but this CD version is intense as its a ballad and more heartfelt.

Where as the Dance mix is 100% a dance Anthem just waiting to happen :o)

If you love musicals as I do then this CD is 100% for you.

Its just a pity that she is no longer performing in concert I swear I always thought she would be the new crop of Divas that would be performing to sold out performances in Las Vegas or Lake Tahoe.

just like former divas such as Lola Folana or okay I can't think of anyone else but you get the idea :o)

A must for any Broadway Lover........2002-03-03

I have never been a fan of Helen Reddy's til I heard this album. Who knew she could interpret some of the Best Of Broadway better than the original songsters. What a voice and what interpretations and what lush orchestrations.

From Tell Me It's Not True from Blood Brothers; to My Friend from the Life; to Surrender from Sunset Blvd; to Your just in Love from Call Me Madam; to Love Look Away from Flower Drum Song--Each song tops the next.

The only draw back is tracks 2 and 3 (or 3 and 4) which are not the best selections. But the rest of the album way overcomensates for this. Highly recommended.

Reddy Rules.......2000-05-15

Excellent return to the studio from one of the 70's best female vocalists. It has been way too long for this great artist not to record. If you were ever a Helen Reddy fan, this is a must for you!

A PRECIOUS JEWEL FROM HELEN REDDY.......2000-01-16

Helen Reddy returns to recording with a wonderful collection of beautiful songs that happen to be from Broadway shows. Fans of Ms. Reddy have always apprecated her ability to choose songs with deeply felt lyrics, and this album fits right in with her best. Her crystal clear voice sounds as beautful as ever. This album, along with her Essential Collection, gets much play in my home. If you are a fan, you won't be disappointed. "Fifty Percent", "Tell Me It's Not True", and "Love Look Away" are worth the price of the CD all by themselves.

Good Compilation of Live Performances.......2002-03-21

This budget release from the St. Clair Entertainment Group is very similar to Laser Light's "Art Rock Live" CD for a very good reason. Both companies have licensed the tracks from Pet Rock Records, the music-releasing unit of the King Biscuit Flower Hour radio show. In fact, six of the tracks on this CD are identical to the tracks on "Art Rock Live." They include all of the Rick Wakeman and Gentle Giant cuts, as well as Renaissance's "Midas Man" and Emerson, Lake and Palmer's "Tiger in a Spotlight." There's a bit more music on this release (including a killer version of "21st Century Schizoid Man" performed by Greg Lake's band) so "The Best of Progressive Rock" gets a slight nod over "Art Rock Live." On the downside, there's no information about the bands or the concerts from which these performances were taken which, at least, Laser Light includes on their CD insert. Also, the Rick Wakeman songs (that appear on both CDs) are weak and are not as well recorded as the other tracks.

With the exception of The Dixie Dregs, all of the bands are British and most of them had their heyday in the 1970s. This CD is very definitely for fans of 1970s progressive rock music, though the short-lived GTR (with Steve Howe from Yes and Steve Hackett from Genesis) recorded their only studio album in the mid-1980s and their version of Yes' "Roundabout" was taken from a 1986 concert in Los Angeles. All in all, "The Best of Progressive Rock" will satisfy devotees of progressive rock who are looking for live performances.

Each of the brothers contributed songs. Tired of Talkin' is a Robben Ford shuffle that is anything but tired. Patrick contributes the joyful funk groove of Another Fine Day and Mark's Up From The Streets is a song he wrote for John Lee Hooker.

A Blues Family.......2005-10-08

Back in the early 1970s, three brothers fresh out of high school formed the Charles Ford Blues Band in San Francisco and jump-started careers that have never slowed down. The band was named after their father. As their careers blossomed, Robben, Patrick and Mark Ford found that it wasn't so easy to get together. Over the years, their separate schedules have kept each one busy, but they do find time to get together occasionally to play. With guitarist Volker Strifler and guest guitarist Chris Cain, the three brothers get together on this album in an up-tempo celebration of their heritage. Patrick plays drums, Robben plays guitar, and Mark wails on harmonica.

Robben sings his original, "Nothing to Nobody," a drifting blues ballad about families and how much we mean to each other. As he stretches out with an extended guitar solo, you can appreciate the contributions that he's given to the blues over the years. He offers as much expression through his guitar as he does when interpreting these poignant lyrics. Each track was recorded before a live audience for broadcast on the PBS television series Sierra Center Stage. Without a doubt, the Ford Brothers have the blues in their blood and celebrate their heritage in style.

This is another excellent outing by the Fords and their family blues band. I really enjoyed Patrick's last CD (minus Robben and Mark but Volker Strifler on guitar and Andy Just on harp are great) called "Another Fine Day".

This live adventure combines them all and provides a number of upbeat, lively blues tunes. Particular standous are "Lovin' Cup", "Feelin' Disconnected" and "Mellow Down Easy". The others are very good as well.

However, my primary beef is how the tunes are presented. The very first song is Mellow Down Easy and it is obvious from Mark Ford's comments that they are well into their second set. Also, at the end of this first song, you hear him saying that they have to go. I don't wish to say that the recording has to follow the concert set exactly but geesh...at least try to help me feel like I am at a live gig. The rest of the presentation seems disjointed as well. On my copy, "Lovin' Cup" is labeled as #8 but on the CD it just continues right into this song after #7 "Up From the Streets" is completed.

However, despite these problems, this CD has some very good blues music that is played with energy and the tunes are well performed. I highly recommend the music.

This CD was created to benefit those living with AIDS/HIV........when the CD was presented to the public in a show from the SF cast (including Franc D'Ambrosio,aka:phantom.....Lisa Vroman,aka: Christine).....all proceeds went to a childrens aids/hiv camp, where sick kids could play and be children again.This CD was created in love and in the Christmas spirit of giving.......it is truly a gorgeous CD made 2 years ago, and still selling as well as the first release....add this one to your collection of classics and know you have passed a little love down the line.....Merry Christmas!

The San Francisco cast has done it again. On stage and off they are amazing. This CD is one of the best Christmas CD's I have heard. Every cast member gives a great performance. Franc D'Ambrosio, as usual, steals the limelight with his angel's voice. I recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates good Christmas songs and a variety of talent.
