Absolutely Amazing!!! ('specially for white folk).......2004-03-27
This is an absolute must!!! I have never heard such passionate singing of spirituals from non-black choirs. Perhaps that is attributed to Shaw's minister roots. As usual, the sonority of Shaw's singers is second to none. This is a fun CD that all can enjoy...not just the choral buffs who know just how good Shaw and his choirs are!!!
Not Up to Shaw's Usual Standard.......2002-03-23
Maybe just personal taste. I don't find the arrangements and vocalizing as interesting and satisfying as "Sea Chanties" and "23 Glee Club Favorites", the latter setting a standard never equaled.
A Must CD for Choral Music Lovers.......2001-01-03
Amazing Grace is a very appropriate title for this recording. For those of you who love Sacred Harp , Southern Harmony and Spirituals, you will revel in the folk traditions of this album. Parker and Shaw arrangements, and sometimes just one or the other are so well done. The singers, of course, do an excellent job of making music under Shaw's direction. "Hark I Hear.." arr. by Parker is becoming a standard for choruses and this album will help you hear why. "If I've got my ticket" by Shaw is a wonderful exchange between solo and chorus. You will be playing this CD over and over once you hear it.
Soul-stirring.......2000-08-10
I have thoroughly enjoyed this CD. The thoughtful and meditative, "What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul" sends the listener awe-struck to the foot of the cross. The triumphant "Ride on King Jesus!" reminds the listener of final victory. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates musical and cultural heritage or for anyone who appreciates religious music.

Barrueco plays Lennon McCartney.......2007-03-20
A first-class CD. Excellent arrangements, especially with London Symphony on "Winding Road."
Brilliant arrangements and performance.......2007-03-06
Aside from the folks who would otherwise waste an opportunity to discuss the worthiness of this album, I fully endorse it as an example of a beautiful combination of excellent playing and superb composing. A good arranger finds the perfect balance between keeping honest to the original music and exploring/exploiting the inherent qualities within it through different means. That's precisely what occurs with this album. You're hard pressed to find better arrangements than the Takemitsu. Leo Brower shows a deft touch for string writing in his arrangements and again his writing for the guitar is spot on. The final two arrangements by Mr. Lubbock are interesting, yet straying further from their original inspiration than the other arrangements, still manage to capture that lovely balance.
There aren't enough accolades to give Maestro Barrueco whose precision and musicianship are nearly unmatched (still a close second to Pepe Romero in my book). An excellent and interesting purchase for guitar, strings, and Beatles lovers alike.
hmm..........2002-02-05
Um... for the record: All the Beatle songs other than those composed by George Harrison or Ringo Starr were credited to "Lennon-McCartney" or "John Lennon and Paul McCartney" by prior agreement of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, whether they actually collaborated (as they did in many cases) or one of them worked by himself.
John Lennon wrote Ticket To Ride, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, A Hard Day's Night, and You've Got To Hide Your Love Away.
Paul McCartney wrote Yesterday, Here, There, And Everywhere, Fool On The Hill, Penny Lane, Hey Jude, and The Long And Winding Road.
John Lennon and Paul McCartney collaborated on Eleanor Rigby, She's Leaving Home, and Michelle.
Again ?.......1999-12-05
This is not the first CD on this site where you try to convince us that John wrote The fool on the hill and other songs written by Paul.I really can't believe you're so uninformed.

Customer Reviews:
New Christy Minstrels make Elevator music on LSD!.......2005-09-28
Perhaps the strangest album ever recorded next to Lou Reed's machine metal music (2 vinyl discs of amplifier feedback).
The singers harmonize as well as the 5th Dimension, the Association, or Peter, Paul and Mary but the results are anything but delicious. I mean how can you make a song like Revolution or I am the Walrus ... full of gut-wrenching emotion into something with no feeling whatsoever (other than nausia)? Well, take a listen ... these guys did it!
An unusual Beatles tribute album.......2003-01-26
I love the Beatles and their music, but I always felt that the songs were what set them apart from other groups. The diversity of tribute albums, crossing just about every genre of music, reinforces that belief. I sometimes broaden my musical horizons via Beatles tribute albums - it is a good way of trying something new which still has a base of familiarity. And so it was that I selected this CD. The first time I played it, I wasn't sure, but on the second play, I loved it.
Despite the inclusion of Yesterday, the songs are generally not the most frequently covered - Penny Lane, Revolution, Day tripper, Lady Madonna, Strawberry fields forever, Drive my car and I am the walrus are all well known, but how often do you come across covers of these songs?
The Swingle singers are made up of four men (two tenors, two bass) and four ladies (two sopranos, two altos). Their roots lie in jazz and classical music, but their a cappella style is very much their own. Classifying music is often difficult, but I wouldn't even begin to classify this. It's not the kind of music I would listen to very often, but it is one of those CD's that I choose from when I want something different to listen to.

this (...) totally rocks the mic. especially enjoyable are the monteverdi selections. i mean, if you're a dumbass little punk you're probably not gonna like it... but hey! why can't dumbass little punks be more like alex de large? you know... with some class... why do they all have to be like dim?
ABSOLUTELY THE GREATEST SOPRANO OF THE 20TH CENTURY.......2003-12-02
I had the great good fortune to hear Ms Berberian live in the early seventies perform most of the music included on this disk.
The event was one of the high points of my childhood.
As at home singing avant-garde as she was singing pop and classical music, many composers wrote for Ms. Berberian simply because there were no other singers accomplished enough to bring their musical visions alive.
This disk offers up a wonderful cross-section of all of the
kinds of music in Cathy's vast repertoire. I recommend it most highly
Greatest Soprano of the 20th Century(?).......2002-06-22
It's incredible to me that the name Cathy Berberian is so unknown today. Listen to the performance of Debussy's Chansons de Bilitis; it's the greatest recorded vocal performance I've ever heard. Throughout the disk, she lives up to the title. Rather than sing in big soprano mode, she is a vocal chameleon who adapts to the subject matter, from Monteverdi to Lennon & McCartney to John Cage. You will not be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Potential But Unpolished.......2007-01-26
In April 1969 - six months before I was born, in fact - the Carpenters trudged into A and M Records to record their first album. It was released as "Offering" and had a rather unflattering photograph of Richard and Karen looking at a flower. The one solid highlight of the recording was "Ticket To Ride," a remake of the Beatles' hit from 1965, turned from rock 'n' roll into a ballad.
Although this is one of the worst Carpenter albums - and Carpenters fans overrated it retrospectively - the potential for stardom is clearly there. The best songs are "All of My Life," which received due attention in "The Karen Carpenter Story," "Someday" - a song that has the precognitive phrase, "Close To You" - the title track, and "Eve," Karen wailing.
This album is indeed different from any other Carpenter record in existence. Richard later said he just 'had' to do the record. But the Carpenters had hit on a rough idea of what was to follow:
1) Record some original compositions
2) Record some hits by other groups ("Ticket To Ride" and "Get Together" by the Youngbloods are on here)
3) Record some lesser known songs by stars (on this one, Buffalo Springfield's "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing")
So although not up to par for the Carpenters, the bright future is seen on this recording. For Carpenters fans only.
The Debut...Amazing Even From The Start.......2006-03-29
Carpenters "Ticket To Ride" orig. released as "Offering" is a masterpiece...Even though it was not a popular album like Close To You,Singles 1969-1973,A Song For You etc. it still is a great album. The title track is the only single released and it only managed to hit #54 on Billboard 100 Singles...But in my opinion the song is better recorded than the overrated band "The Beatles"...Other standout tracks include "Eve" a touching song from Karen...Also my favorite track is "Don't Be Afraid"..a masterpiece..it was not released as a single but it did make the B-side for "For All We Know" in 1971...."All Of My Life" is a masterpiece with Karen's voice being the best.Make sure you pick a copy of this album up!
Carpenters' debut.......2005-09-07
The debut album from Richard and Karen, released in 1969. This is a must-have for any Carpenters fan. The version of the song 'Ticket To Ride' is different to the version that has been included on numerous compilations. Karen re-recorded her vocals and drums for the 1973 'Singles' compilation, and that's the version that has always been used, as far as I know. The original version sounds more melancholy and I prefer it to the later version. The other tracks, while not well known, are all excellent. Stand-outs are the title track, 'Eve', 'Someday' and 'All Of My Life'. The sound of this album is quite different to their later recordings, even to 1970's 'Close To You'. At the time that this album was recorded, the intention may have been for Carpenters to be a true duo, rather than the focus, at least vocally, being on Karen. Richard sings lead on FIVE of the songs.
The First Carpenter Album Makes Its Debut in 1969.......2005-08-05
"Ticket To Ride" takes its name from the hit song single, "Ticket To Ride", released by the Carpenters in 1969. It would become the Carpenters first hit single (peaking at #56 onteh charts), and opened the door for the duo of Karen and Richard Carpenter to begin their string of hits that would span the decade of the 1970's. "Ticket To Ride" is Richard Carpenter's soft-ballad adaptation of the Beatle's hit of the same name. When the Beatles broke up in 1969, the Carpenters' "Ticket To Ride" hit the airwaves and was a hit, for it was a sad ballad and Beatles'fans mourning the loss of their favorite group related to the mournful interpretation of the song.
The distinctive "Carpenter sound", that of multi-layered harmonic vocals, is first heard on this album in several songs, including "Ticket To Ride", "Your Wonderful Parade", "All of My Life", and "What's The Use". Karen's voice is not yet "perfect" in her emotional content interpretation of the songs, as she is just a young 19 years old. An example of this is the song "Someday", which Karen interprets with a "wailing" timbre to her voice, admittedly not her best interpretation of the song. Karen reinterpreted this song in the 1980 TV special "Music, Music, Music", and her vocal is the definitive interpretation and performance, one of which she was very proud of. It is interesting to hear the early "primitive" Carpenter sound and Karen's voice, as the true Carpenter sound would fully emerge in the next album, "Close To You".
Although it is their first work, this Carpenter album is one that is pleasing, though inferior to their subsequent recordings. If you are a fan of the Carpenters, you will want to have this album as many of the songs are not included on their later greatest hits albums. I particularly liked "Get Together", the slow love ballad, "All of My Life", the lively "Don't Be Afraid", and the youthful "What's The Use".
I give this album 4-stars, as it is not of the quality of their later albums. It probably deserves just three stars, but how can I give any album with Karen Carpenter's exquisite voice just three stars?! That would be a sacrilege to my favorite singer of all-time!
Jim "Konedog" Koenig
Highly recommended.......2005-01-03
This cd is a must. I am only 24 and wasn't around when the Carpenters were being played on the radio as "current hits," so I'm still learning new songs. There were alot of songs on this cd that I didn't know but they were good. All of my life, Ticket to Ride, Don't be Afraid and Eve are all great songs. Those were my favorite on this cd. Any Carpenters fan must have.

No one can rock a microphone quite like Bus Stop........2001-12-03
From their impressive debut with Dance Dance Revolution, Bus Stop has been living up to their reputation as one of the phattest remix/MC combos in music. Taking classic crowd-pleasing favorites like Carl Douglas's "Kung Fu Fighting" or T-Rex's "Bang A Gong", Bus Stop adds their own innovative lyrical and musical twist, with their trademark thumping backbeat and mad lyrical styling. The "Na Na Na Na" solo on "Na Na Hey Hey" is one of the more amazing vocals I've ever heard, and Bus Stop's subtle twist on the chorus of "Bang A Gong, Get It On" to "Get It On, Bang A Gong" is just genius. A must-buy for everyone on your wish list, and everyone else too!
