I bought Vol. 1 of this series and was quite satisfied, but I have to say I'm more than satisfied with this one. If you can just mellow out and enjoy some great pieces, you'll love this CD. #15 on Disc 2 is almost worth the price alone!

Yes this CD will put you to sleep in minutes. Its the most boring uninspiring classical music. The first CD was very good but this Vol. 2 is like most movie sequels....AWFUL !

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Best of the best.......2004-03-14

There's something for every Tchaikovsky lover on this disc. From Swan Lake to Onegin, many of Tchaikovsky's most-known melodies are on this disc. I'd have preferred more than an excerpt of the first movement of Piano Concerto No. 1, but this disc is a great introduction to Tchaikovsky's works.

An album that deserved a bigger audience........2007-05-27

John Denver's star was on the wane and his marriage to Annie was either ending or just over when this album was done. Just as "Duke" (Genesis) became Phil Collins' response to his divorce, so this was John's.

And it is a brilliant album, although probably John's darkest since "Take Me to Tomorrow". It deserved more exposure and should have reached a larger audience. But, since John was at the point where he would "only" sell about 500,000 albums RCA did nothing to promote it. John was dropped by RCA after his next album, "Wind beneath My Wings". People have discovered this gem over the years. If you haven't, give it a listen. Better late than never.

A splendid return to greatness!.......2005-07-26

After wandering for five years in search of a new sound, JD goes back to writing and singing a nice collection of tunes. Some of this material reflects his recent travels to distant lands, especially the delightful Top 40 ballad "Shanghai Breezes." Other standout tracks include "Islands", with the fragrant tropical tradewinds blowing through my mind as I listen, and "Opposite Tables", a medium-speed soft rocker with some great backup vocals by Denver himself. That one is a political plea for an end to the cold war, which was still plaguing the world at that time. A couple of sunny, laid-back pop tunes with irresistable melodies and artistic production work also got my attention: "Dreams" and "Relatively Speaking."

The songs here are fresh and different from most of his previous albums, and John puts his unmistakeable stamp of quality on all of them. If pressed to find fault, I could only say that "Heart To Heart" goes on a little too long at the end, and I miss the kind of songs that JD does better than anybody, namely, nature songs. But how can I complain, when he explores new territory with the style and confidence of one who's been there before?
This is an indispensible addition to any collection of 80s pop music.

"All this Joy" and "Alaska and Me" are the best tracks. I liked this album because of the pure and innocent joy many of the songs represented. I still have the LP but have not played it for awhile because I haven't had a working turntable for over ten years. John had a way to make people feel connected after listening to his songs, a rare talent indeed, in this day and age of fragmentation in society.

This Album Is An Inside Look At A More Mature John Denver.......2003-06-28

I recently purchased this CD and have played it endlessly. I have been a John Denver fan since his career began. With the exception of It's About Time , I have always enjoyed John's music.
At one point, later in his life , John commented on how he was just learning how to sing . The songs about the mountains and the ocean have always been John's signature . Other than Annie's Song , little is said about John's songs about life and love .
This album is a complete expression of John's psyche . With John's marriage ending , the death of his father, and the decline of his ability to top the charts, he is definately reaching deep into his soul . Perhaps Love ( without Pavoratti ), Seasons of the Heart , and Relatively Speaking are three of my favorites . Opposite Tables is John experimenting with a new sound . I have not been too pleased with John's experiments with different sounds, but John hit the mark with this album .
Anybody who says that John Denver was just a fad , or that he was not a serious artist with real talent , should listen to this album with an open mind . Probably his best studio album ever .

An excellent compilation of folk tunes and violin concerto adagios, played masterfully by some of the world's most revered musicians. Features modern pieces (Korngold, Barber), which are a personal favorite of mine.

My daughter is a violin student of 7 years and she has played 3 or 4 of these pieces for recitals. I bought the CD's so she could become familiar with the pieces as she was learning to play them. Now I find myself listening to the CD's almost every night when I go for my end of the day drive to relax. My favorites are the Mozart Concerto in G, the Mendelssohn Concerto in E minor and Beethoven's Romance in F on disc 2, but all the songs are exquisitely beautiful. I highly recommend it.

These CDs have the most incredible selections of music on them. Listening to the violins has enabled me to complete papers for my doctoral level classes without the usual neck aches. This is soothing, exquistie music for the soul! Lovely!!

Exquisite collection & performances, unbelievable value!!!.......2002-01-15

"Over 2 l/2 hours of the world's most beautiful music." These words on the cover are very close to true. What an incredible value this collection is!! So many of these compilations of this sort are cheaply produced, and those "greatest hits" collections are one trite piece after another -- after a while one runs screaming to the stereo to shut it off. However, this collection is top-notch, and the performers they chose are masterful musicians at the top of their game. Every selection is lovely, each one unfolding after the other in a sublime slide show of exquisite compositions performed by legends. This is TWO CDs of sparkling performances composed and performed by masters. There is not a bad selection or a piece of inferior quality in the entire lot.

The violin is an extraordinary instrument that, when played correctly, can pluck the heartstrings and stir the soul. It is played perfectly by each puppetmaster on each one of these wonderful pieces, and the experience of listening to this collection is an exquisite journey for the heart and spirit. Best of the Best collection of Relaxing-meditative classical music.......2007-07-23

ONe of the best CD music investments I have made. Use it primarily for relaxation/meditation but it will also work well with massage environment.
It goes from spine tingling inspirational to soothing and relaxing. Totally shifts my conciousness to a higher plane.

A huge disapointment.......2004-12-01

Yes, this disc has some stunning music...about 2 minutes per selection of it. Sometimes a little more, but this is just a movement or so of each. I was thrilled to find Andrew Davis' version of The Polovstian Dances and found only a short choral section of it. It is a useful survey if you are a fledgeling listener to Russian classical music, but other than that, it is pretty useless for listening.

The true Russian spirit............2000-06-18

This CD has a wonderful combination of the best tunes Russia has to offer (under 10 minutes of course!). Folk tunes like Two Guitars and Dark Eyes add to the Russian spirit. Also a nice war-like tune by an unfamilar man by the name of Knipper. This is his only work that made it to the world of classical music. Many other works done nicely by Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and many others who don't end with 'sky'. Very nice way to introduce you to the Russians. Buy it even if you know about the Russian works. There are a few 'one hitters' on this CD.
