From his childhood on the family farm in rural Tuscany to the worldwide stage, Andrea Bocelli has achieved phenomenal success. His singing is only partially the point, and his fame owes much more to the aura of romance and the romantic archetype that's attached to him. Romanza is by far Bocelli's largest success, winning adoration thanks to the swooning vocals and the easy, sometimes lush, always pop-safe instrumental textures and melodies. As far as his opera chops go, Bocelli has won the approval of Pavarotti but likely will not wow enthusiasts. The upside is that Bocelli will likely grow the opera pie, convincing labels to take on more operatic projects. --Andrew Bartlett

I confess to loving Italian music and opera in addition to Rock & Roll, Country and music in general.

Is the Devil incarnate." (Inglese italianato e un diavolo incarnate) Or so I've heard. I suppose the author (I read it in a copy of Machiavelli's The Prince) could be forgiven for not having heard Don Bocelli and Donna Brightman sing "Con Te Partiro" - can we now say Inglese italianata e un angelo incarnate?

The rest of the album is a collection of ballads, most of which suffer from weak or clashing instrumentals. An exception is "Macchine Da Guerra" which has a pleasant and comparatively strong piano accompaniment.

What a voice, it soars with the arias and bops with the more contemporary. Especially love the song about Caruso. Andrea is un cantante bello, un uomo bello! Turn this one up with the top down and let it sing you home.

I bought this cd again after losing my original copy that I bought the year it was released. Out of all my Bocelli cds this is my favorite. It has a good mix of classic opera with popera and really shows his abilities. I have used this cd to turn people on to opera and popera, and the results have been incredible! Once you hear him, you cannot deny his talent and passion. Simply AMAZING!!!

Andrea is incredible.His romantic poetry with music is unparalleled.The only downside to this album is the inescapable 90's feel.If you don't mind it,then buy this album.If you do,then buy 'Time To Say Goodbye'off iTunes and get Sogno,Andrea,or Cieli di Toscana.

Fans of small, pretty-voiced soprano Sarah Brightman will not be disappointed by this CD. In addition to some pop songs, Brightman sings high-flying excerpts from Orff's Carmina Burana, Puccini's "O mio babbino caro" (performed better by almost any other operatic soprano elsewhere), and "Alleluia" from Mozart's Exsultate Jubilate. One might call this a crossover disc; others might just see it as a recording featuring a pop singer with artsy aspirations. Whatever it is, Brightman's fans love her; others do not. Two duets with tenor Jose Cura remind the listener what opera singing really ought to sound like. --Robert Levine

It's a big world and artistry represents a big world within that world. There's room in all of this, thank the Creator, for Sarah Brightman and her multiple musical personae. You can't fit Brightman into a single genre and you'll only become bitter if you try.

Just enjoy the music.

It's difficult to say whether, if Sarah had not chosen to sing so many duets with male vocal stalwarts, we would have pegged her voice as made for that format. But there's no turning back now. She simply shines in concert with the likes of Bocelli and Cura. The little heart of this reviewer, at the least, soars as she does so.

Some of the ire that Brightman draws from music critics of more defined criteria is generated by her gift for self-promotion, perhaps even as much as by her cross-genre peregrinations. Alas--and I say this as a fan of opera and a lamenter of its declining claim on our Western culture--that reflects more a failing of opera to convince its potential audiences of its need to exist than of a bare excess on Brightman's part. Who is to say? And why worry about it. The world, indeed, is a very big place and music is no zero sum game. I say bring it *all* on!

Just don't bring it on without Sarah Brightman. She's a piece of the furniture now, a beguiling, surprising, melodic piece of the room's personality.

This album is nearly too good to be true. 'Just Show Me How To Love You', with José Cura, is almost overwhelming in its pathos and power. Singing in several languages, Brightman's timbre seems to change dramatically with each. One could almost swear there's more than one female lead on the cd.

There is not. Brightman has simply chosen to lend her voice to the project of making it her specialty to be eclectic. Given the artistic and cultural silos and barrios in which we confine ourselves, we could use a little more of that around here.

Meanwhile, just enjoy the music. There is most emphatically room for *this* splendid album in this big, beautiful, troubled world of ours.

How to shake depresion.......2007-07-07

I have a bit of sadness in me at times. While driving home tonight to my shangrila in the Wyoming mountains (a 35 mile drive) I inserted this disk in my receiver and listened to Sarah's beautiful voice (and Bocheli's pretty good too). By the time I got home, no more depression.

Gorgeous and accessible..........2007-05-27

I love this CD - Sarah Brightman's voice is exquisite, clear and sweet, it sweeps through my head and heart, clearing out the mental/emotional debris of the day. Fewer than half of the songs are in English, but that is entirely irrelevant to me, it just focuses my attention on the purity and loveliness of her voice. Just the thing for instilling a sense of peace and profound gratitude that a sound so beautiful exists.

Her voice reigns supreme, but there are just too many selections on this CD in foreign languages. I knew that when I bought it, but...I still find it distracking. My solution? I bought two other Sarah CDs!!

Time to say goodbye is wonderful and touching to the mind, heart, and soul. There is nothing greater than hearing a voice of an angel before you sleep our just want relaxation. Not only does this CD sound great but it is super cheap (should cost even more) and delivered 2 days after order. So listen to the CD and feel moments and experience an unbelievable feeling just tingling through you as you listen to Sarah Brightman's album, "Say Goodbye."

Sarah's Best Easy Listening CD.......2007-03-15

Sarah Brightman's talent is limitless. Her soprano and/or alto voice is among the best and she lets it show in 'CLASSICS'. CLASSICS is a beautiful, easy listening, and peaceful CD. CLASSICS is one to listen to in tranquil or relaxing moments. "CLASICS" is a collection of great pieces of music written by great composers (Shuburt, Handel, Chopin, Puccini, and the like). I have listened to CLASSICS about 15 times now and it always puts me in a quiet and peaceful mood (I am ~50 years old).

Best Brightman CD.......2007-02-07

Sarah Brightman is a Classic.......2007-01-02

Sarah Brightman is at her best in "Classics." From Dvorak's "Rusalka" (Opera B.203) to Beethoven's haunting Op 52, slow movement (Symphony #7), Brightman's voice and lyrical style are a joy. I particularly enjoy her performances of Schubert's Ave Maria and Andrew Lloyd Weber's Pie Jesu. This is a great add to my collection of serious music.

Not The Best - Not the Worst - From Sarah Brightman.......2006-12-30

After purchasing this CD for my iPod for iTunes, I must say that I'm a little bit dissapointed. 7 new recordings and 8 old ones, ones that I already happen to have. I do like the fact that they're all on one CD! Some of her new recordings, including, "Ave Maria", "Winter Light", "Alhambra", "Dans La Nuit", and the new recording of "Pie Jesu" are just too breathy for my taste. It seems as with every changing CD, Sarah's voice changes. I'm not saying that the result is bad; it actually gives the songs more of a dream like quality, but I'm used to the younger, more Andrew Lloyd-Webber integrated Sarah. Scooping continually occurs in new recordings of "O Mio Babbino Caro", and "Nessun Dorma". In some tracks from La Luna, like "Figlio Perduto", Sarah's voice is TOTALLY dominated by harmonizing recordings that sound almost mechanical.

OVERALLY - The new songs sound O.K. and the old recordings are just as good as they were back then. This album is still a great buy!

Nice Cover.......2006-12-27

I'm a heterosexual guy who's not an opera aficionado - I only mention these facts because I seem to be right in the bull's-eye of the target market for this product. Sarah B. has a nice voice and she's pretty. Both of these are featured prominently on this CD. The cover and several pages in the insert are devoted to what must have been a very long and expensive photo shoot (and Photoshop) of a semi-clad Sarah looking marvelous. (The CD also comes with a flyer so you can buy various Brightman "Classics" apparel - perhaps not for the heterosexual male).

As far as the music goes: not bad, not great. I don't claim to have the most discerning ears for this sort of music, but everything was OK by me. However, the pieces on the CD with which I'm somewhat familiar, such as "O Mio Babbino Caro," didn't sound quite as good as other versions I've heard (and that includes by Charlotte Church, not just opera stars). Also, the solo version of "Time to Say Goodbye" didn't sound nearly as good to me as the duet with Bocelli.

In sum, there were 3-4 songs I liked enough to rip to MP3s - which is enough so that I didn't feel ripped myself...

Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.

The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.

I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.

Yes this CD will put you to sleep in minutes. Its the most boring uninspiring classical music. The first CD was very good but this Vol. 2 is like most movie sequels....AWFUL !

The Producers was the vehicle that first proclaimed Mel Brooks's decidedly singular comic vision as a film director in 1968. At the time, the world may not have been entirely ready for the depth charges of hilarity he unleashed; but more than three decades later, it seemed almost foreordained that the film's retooling as a full-fledged musical--directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman--would become the smash hit of the 2000-2001 Broadway season (even before opening at the St. James Theatre in April). Brooks is, of course, no stranger to the Broadway musical genre or to songwriting, but skeptics might find themselves taken by surprise at just how outrageously well all the threads come together for the new show.

The film's absurd core vignette--the infamous "Springtime for Hitler"--if anything gains a few notches in hilarity when framed by a character-rich musical that comes off as both parody and valentine in its mimicry of Broadway's "golden age." Brooks (with the help of idiomatically expert arrangements by Glen Kelly) has cooked up a variety of numbers constituting a virtual primer of old-fashioned American musical comedy styles (there's even a toying with Cabaret-style decadence), but they're always coated with an extra layer of zaniness. In fact, the whole show becomes a Chinese box of parodies within parodies. But what really gets the whole mix working is a surefire cast headed by Nathan Lane playing Max Bialystock and Matthew Broderick doing a delightfully nebbish turn with delusions of misplaced glory as his sidekick, Leo Bloom.

From his first big number (musically winking at Fiddler on the Roof), Lane hungrily lays claim to the role, undaunted by his formidable predecessor, Zero Mostel. Even on disc, you can visualize his over-the-top mugging as a dethroned "king of Broadway" who was "the first producer ever to do summer stock in the winter." Comedy, as they say, is all about timing, and that's exactly what Lane gets right. His interactions with Bloom, Franz Liebkind (Brad Oscar), and Roger de Bris (Gary Beach) are priceless, even when only in sound. As for the tunes, Brooks crafts a number of truly memorable ones--don't be surprised to find yourself horrified as you hum along with "Der Guten Tag Hop-Clop" and, of course, "Springtime for Hitler." --Thomas May

This recording is great! I saw the play in november and loved the music. I bought the CD a little later and i am still listing to it. The cast are all great singers and did a great job. The songs are witty and catchy and never get old. You should listin to this.(Warning:See the movie or the play before you listin to this, you might hate it if you've have not.)

Spring Time for "The Producers".......2005-12-13

While I'll abmit that Nazi regemes and Hitler are probably some of the least funny thing in the world...i have to admit that the words to Springtime for Hitler are hilarious, just like the rest of the songs on this cast recording.

While "The Producers" Is not as musically complex or mature as other "Best Musical" scores of recent years (Spamalot, Avenue Q, Hairspray,) It is funnier than all of those put together. Nathan lane And Matthew Broderick Are perfectly cast in their roles and Caddy Hoffman is great, and when Ulla belt, she Belts!
the rest of the cast is amazing.

As for the song I can't think of one that I don't like, They are all great!

I would hope that the fact that the show makes light of Hitler doesn't turn you off, because you would be missing somthing great.

Mel Brooks = Brilliant.......2005-12-12

My theatre group went to New York two years ago, adn we did a marathon 4 shows in 3 days. Each show got progressively better, finally culminating in seeing Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick's final performance of "The Producers." I have been a fan of Brooks' since I saw "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" 5 years ago. Naturally, I was beyond excited to see the show he made of his most brilliant film.

I was not disappointed. It was funny, racy, and downright fabulous. I bought the soundtrack at intermission and have been listening to it ever since. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves musicals. Lane and Broderick play off each other perfectly, Cady Huffman has one of the best belting voices I've heard in ages, and the songs are actually FUNNY.

Aside from raving about one of my favorite shows, I would like to address the comments made about the show downplaying Hitler and being racist towards Germans. In no way does this show downplay Hitler's terrible deeds. Bialystock and Bloom make several comments about how disgusted they are about the play- the fact that it is so insulting to our sensibilities is the reason why it was chosen in the first place. I am Jewish and have studied the Holocaust and WWII for years. I was not offended in the least, nor did I feel the Brooks was promoting or trivializing Hitler's war crimes. Brooks himself is Jewish for god's sake.

Second, I see nothing in the show that is racist towards Germans. Yes there is a Nazi in it who is German. How is that racist? The Nazis went all over the world after WWII- it is possible that several ended up in New York City. And no one will argue that some Nazi's were German. You might as well say that the show is discriminatory towards Swedes, or gay directors, or producers, or the countless number of things made fun of in the show.

it won 11 (if im correct) TONY awards for a reason!.......2005-12-08

This is by far the funniest thing I have ever seen. I got the chance to see it on broadway with Lane (unfortunatly not Broderick) and most of the original cast. For some reason, certain people seem to think this play is racist. First off, the whole thing is pure 100% SATIRE. I'm 15 and I can realize that. Also, are you aware that Mel Brooks is jewish? Yeah, so lighten up. I realize what Hitler did, and it will never be forgotten. But my God, get a sense of humor. In case you never saw the play, the Bavarian guy breaks his leg (making "It's bad luck to say good luck on opening night funny) and is replaced by the gay director for the song "Springtime for Hitler". ITS HILARIOUS! BROOKS MADE HITLER A GAY GUY! And why do you think he did that? Geeze... just lighten up!

So about the CD...awesome. I love these songs, and I am very much looking forward to seeing the movie version of the musical coming out in late December! GO SEE IT!

Over the course of her first albums, including her fourth, 1992's Every Time You Say Goodbye, Alison Krauss probably did more than any of her contemporaries to attract mainstream-country attention to bluegrass. A traditionalist might say this is because Krauss and her band, Union Station, offer a kind of "bluegrass-lite" that's cut with pop sensibility, absent any manic-fast picking, and awash in Krauss's goes-down-easy vocal. Nonetheless, this is a solid album that pushed Krauss deservedly further into the limelight. Highlights include the title track, Union Station banjo picker Ron Block's fine gospel number "Shield of Faith," and the traditional instrumental "Cluck Old Hen." --Anders Smith-Lindall

Alison and an earlier version of Union Station sound great.......2004-07-15

Dan Tyminski later replaced Tim Stafford on guitar and after mandolin Wiz Adam Steffey left AKUS Dobro Deity Jerry Douglas joined the band.

Ron Block on banjo and guitar and Barry Bales on bass have been with Alison for years, and this version of Union Station sounds comparably polished and talented. I'm going to guess if you're reading this that you have at least a nodding acquaintance with Alison's one-in-a-million voice and the fact that while her bands are built to complement that voice - she also doesn't hog the spotlight.

On this CD standout cuts include "New Fool", "Who Can Blame You", "Heartstrings" along with the Gospel "Jesus, Help me to Stand" and the title cut.

Several of the tracks feature other Union Station members on lead vocals and although they vary from "good" to "not bad" - they suffer from today's perspective in that no one else in Union Station has a voice like Alison's, and no one else in *this* version of the band has a voice like Dan Tyminski.

Still - absolutely required for Alison Krauss fans.

Excellent CD.......2003-08-21

I am a newcomer to Bluegrass - bought the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack and got hooked on it. I was intrigued by the Krauss songs on that album and came to Amazon looking for more. The reviews told me to buy this album, so I did. And I am quite pleased with the purchase.

It is incredible to listen to such skill on the banjo, especially after hearing so much modern guitar strumming. That combined with Krauss' hypnotic voice make the album great. My only problem with the album was that Krauss didn't sing EVERY song!

Pure but fairly mellow bluegrass.......2003-07-12

Alison Krauss has done much to popularise bluegrass in recent years. Her early recordings were pure bluegrass - this (from 1992) was the last album of that phase of her career. Her more recent albums have included other influences but I enjoy those too, in a different way.

On this album, Alison and her band, Union Station, work their way through a selection of songs that are generally not well known despite several of them being cover versions. Many of these are old bluegrass songs, but they also include I don't know why (Shawn Colvin) and Lose again (Karla Bonoff). There are also some original songs here including two by Sidney Cox (of the Cox family).

At the time, Union Station was made up of Tim Stafford (guitar), Ron Block (banjo - he also wrote three of the songs here), Adam Steffey (mandolin) and Barry Bales (bass). Alison played the fiddle as well as doing most of the singing. The four men could all sing and each of them can be heard on this album, providing harmony or duet vocals, but Alison is the real star.

If you are unfamiliar with Alison's early music, I recommend that you buy Now that I've found you - A collection, which I've already reviewed. That includes one track from each of her early albums, plus tracks not available on any of her other albums so far. If you have that collection and you are looking for more of Alison's early music, you will enjoy this.

New Grass Blue Grass Good Grass.......2003-05-13

Bluegrass is cool again. Wait, when was it cool in the first place? I'm sure there was a time when everyone in town would gather together at the barn hoedown and Ma and Pa would take a spin on the dance floor. Well, this one by Alison Krauss and Union Station puts you there. It's a mix between traditional and an edge-off twang of new grass softness. It's the work that really heralded in Alison Krauss and her crew and dare I say laid a precursor for the popular runaway success of "O Brother Where Art Thou?" soundtrack and to a lesser extent the Dixie Chicks.

This music reaches me quite pure. There is something about an artist earlier works that comes across more raw, true, fervent, pure and "Every Time You Say Goodbye" comes across in places as all of these. Though Krauss carries the band's main moniker, it's Union Station that has the talent that stands out here. Ron Block, Tim Stafford, Barry Bales, and Adam Steffey trade off adding to the harmonies and take the lead in a few songs. Those songs stand-out to me. To my taste, Krauss' voice is a little too soft, a little too sweet to catch the down home spirit of bluegrass. She can play one heck of a fiddle, but let the boys sing for the most part.

Stand out songs are, "Another Night," "It won't work this Time," and "Another Day Another Dollar." O Brother, don't forget the standard "Cluck Old Hen," providing a fitting vehicle to showcase the talent of these talented bluegrassers. Heck, any one of these songs will have you jumping up from the kitchen table, grabbing the molasses jug and beating on or blowing on it, skipping around like a old cluck fool and sliding and kicking those boots across the hay-strewn floor. Yeeehah!!

The Manhattans go back to the pre-Beatles (and for the most part the pre-Motown) era so it is not surprising that some of their earlier work such as "I Wanna Be Your Everything" and "One Life to Live" aren't on this compilation. No doubt other record companies were involved in the recording of those songs. There's a lot to enjoy here; even the non-hits are easy to listen to. My sister, a longtime country music fan, heard Blue Lovett do the ...this has got to be the saddest day of my life...opening on "Kiss and Say Goodbye" and made me rewind the tape I had then and replay it over and over on a 90-mile trip to the airport. She had the CD version installed in her bar's juke box. That's the power of the song; it had been almost 20 years since the tune first came out when that happened. And "Shining Star", a truly good love song, is special to me for a 1975 trip my wife and I made as the song was released. Even though those two songs still get preferential play, I enjoy all of their songs here. I recommend this compilation to go with your favorite Chi-Lites CD.

Truly one of their finest! Almost every Manhantan song you could possibly want is on this album with one exception "If I Had One Life to Live". I can't seem to find this song anywhere on a Manhattan's CD. They sing a very short version of it on their "Live in South Africa" CD. If anyone knows where I can find this song, PLEASE let me know.

Interesting material deftly handled.......2006-07-02

Bill Evans is most famous for his ground-breaking trio with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian. While I cannot overstate the importance of said group, I actually think I like Evans' later trios better, any of the groups featuring Eddie Gomez. The present album does feature Gomez and drummer Elliot Zigmund, but like other albums of this period, Evans himself is the main focus. Something about the loss of LaFaro seems to have made Evans more generally assertive, and I have always felt that his command of the instrument was better later in his career.

This album features really interesting material; instead of lots of traditional standards, the material is made up of some later jazz tunes, the best example of which is Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance." Considering that Hancock is greatly indebted to Evans for parts of his style, it is interesting that Evans (and Ahmad Jamal for that matter) would use this tune on their own albums. It's a great tune, though, and Evans handles it in a way which definitely contrasts with Hancock's approach. An interesting study is to compare the present version with Hancock's rendition on Ron Carter's "Third Plane" album, also featuring Tony Williams, as well as Ahmad Jamal's treatment on "The Awakening." Each version is different and I'm undecided as to my favorite (especially when you throw in the classic original version on Hancock's "Maiden Voyage") but I like this one a lot.

The other really interesting selection is Burt Bacharach's "A House is Not a Home," a tune often precariously dangling over the dark pit of cheesyness but nonetheless a very pretty tune. I like what Evans does with it a lot, in a brief but poignant reading.

All in all, this is an extremely solid, at times beautiful and moving musical document from late in Evans' career. I would highly recommend it for its beauty, challenge, and accessibility, three adjectives that could only meet in describing an artist of Evans' caliber and genius. It may not be the best from this period (the live albums "The Tokyo Concert" and "Since We Met" are a notch higher) but that only underscores Evans' tremendously high potential on live dates. Buy this and the other two and choose how carefully and deeply you wish to listen, because it stands up on all levels.

I was surprised at how beautiful the sound of this one particular set is put together.

There is a care and gentle beauty to this set that is so sorely missing in much of today's improvisational music.

Bill truly developed a most individual sound throughout his extensive career.

"I Will Say Goodbye" was Bill Evans' final trio session for Fantasy Records in 1977, and it contains some of his most tender and beautiful playing. Of particular note is a lovely performance of the Bacharach ballad "A House Is Not A Home", probably the best jazz rendition of a Burt B. tune I've ever heard (and I've heard a lot of them for some reason!) Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance" seamlessly leads into "Seascape". The jaunty bonus track "Orson's Theme" is a welcome addition to round out this release. And both takes of the bittersweet "I Will Say Goodbye" are gorgeous. If you love Evans' WB alubm "You Must Believe In Spring" (and how couldn't you?) you'll find "I Will Say Goodbye" to be a perfect companion.

Kunzel's different perspective on ALW's musicals.......2005-11-06

Kunzel's offering of Andrew Lloyd Webber suites is a worthwhile tribute to this modern-day titan of globalised musicals. Although this album has a different feel from the original cast albums, Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops still perform these affectionate arrangements of Lord Lloyd Webber's musicals expertly, superbly and voluptiously. The creative arrangements by Crafton Beck and Steven Reineke are tastefully and, for the most part, faithfully done, and allow Kunzel to offer a fresh perspective to these musicals in their orchestral settings. And as always Telarc provides its trademark audiophile-quality recording - surround sound quality with a sumptuous spatialiser such that you might be overwhelmed by the Phantom's laughter in the Phantom suite.

Kunzel contrasts the dramatic and lyrical sides of the PHANTOM and SUNSET BOULEVARD suites as if they were written for the Pops. The Phantom suite gains from a breathtaking organ introduction of the Phantom's theme, and from the contrasts in Music of the Night that match the lyrics perfectly, even without the cast album. The tender arrangement of Think of Me cleverly weaves the Angel of Music melody as a counterpoint, while All I Ask of You, complete with some of the details of the original orchestrations, makes a calming answer to Christine's Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again. The JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR suite depicts the contrasting and conflicting moods of this groundbreaking rock opera, from the contrasts in I Don't Know How to Love Him to the sheer anguish in Gethsemene (I Only Want to Say).

There are some interesting arrangements on this ALW offering, especially the arrangement of Don't Cry for Me Argentina from EVITA. Although some listeners might be offended when it transmorphs itself into the Ravel Bolero after doing an about-turn from its lush, Spanish feel, it still depicts Evita's rise to power and her manipulative trait in her character, well-suiting an orchestral concert arrangement of the tune and fitting in with the spirit of the musical. Another interesting arrangement is the rousing theme-and-variation finale of Any Dream Will Do from JOSEPH, which incorporates many different musical styles throughout the variations, from ballroom waltzing to jazz, movie music (Magnificent Seven) and circus-style music. I know some listeners might be offended, but in their own inimitable and creative way, Kunzel and the Pops still pay tribute to this early ALW musical by evoking the myriad of colours on the coat and the diversity of musical styles in the original JOSEPH musical. This arrangement certainly fits the trademark style of the Pops perfectly.

The only fault with this collection is in the arrangement of Memory from CATS. Here, this song is treated as a flat-out romantic ballad, rather than as the haunting anthem for respect that Grizabella sings. Nevertheless, the arrangement by Tommy Newsom (who wrote this arrangement for a Doc Severinson album) is innofensive to this well-loved ALW melody (this is the only arrangement that Crafton Beck or Steven Reineke didn't write for this album). Also, I wish that Kunzel had included Love Changes Everything and Whistle Down the Wind, but given the fact that this was a 1996 recording, ALW hadn't written Whistle down the Wind as yet. But these are minor caveats, since Kunzel offers much to savour in these infectuous and spirited performances.

Yet I still feel that Kunzel's ALW offering is a winner in its lush orchestral suite arrangements of his well-loved and great musicals, far superior to any shopping-mall synthesised arrangement. This would surely count towards another feather in Kunzel's cap and stand pride of place with his rousing offering of Rodgers & Hammerstein. I'm sure Lord Lloyd Webber would have been proud.
