Music for yoga is such a cliché that you could slap that moniker on a Barry Manilow CD and have it sold as a soundtrack for Downward Facing Dog pose. Yoga music has become a made-to-order commodity, and rarely attains the level of art. The title Music for Yoga and Other Joys doesn't bode well, but then, it has Jai Uttal, a veteran of world fusion going back 15 years and a devotee of kirtan singing teaming up with multi-instrumentalist Ben Leinbach for a series of extended improvisations. Leinbach creates a shifting back drop of chilled, Indian-derived grooves and textures like liquid mercury dipped in a fractal swirl. It's a perfect modal backdrop for Uttal, who improvises freely on an Indian stringed instrument called the dotar, electric guitar, and even banjo. Pieces like the 26-minute "Govinda" extend in a free fall until a rhythm loop drops in. Uttal swaps to a fuzzed out electric guitar solo that eventually merges into an improvised kirtan, his voice coiling in note-bending spirals like soul singing from the east. This may be music for yoga, but it's the other joys that will keep you coming back. --John Diliberto

Beautiful Music.......2007-07-28
I like Jai Uttal's music since many years. This is one of his best albums.I like the way he incorporates different cultures, Yoga, bliss and spirituality. I also like Yoga Healing by the Aum Orchestra. Perfect for Yoga and meditation, or eMotive by the Non Profit Music label from Spain with the incredible song "Raghupati Raghava" by Eduardo Laguillo. My favorite Yoga Music artists are Eduardo Laguillo, The Aum Orchestra, Deva Premal, Krishna Das and Jai Uttal

5 STARS AND THEN SOME !!.......2006-02-10
Oh Julie, the songs you sang on this CD are superb. I wish you could still give us that joy. If you can only sing in the low registers, give us jazz!! You can do it I just know you can!!
Pretty Sad, .......2005-10-27
Hollywood veteran Julie Andrews has had a glorious career, but not without its downsides. Her legend is built on "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" and other glorious roles. Her abilities as a singer were never impressive or great, her voice often sounded weak, but she always knew how to sing around her very limited vocal range. On this collection she performs some of the greatest Broadway tunes ever written and even though she does a good job, her voice just doesn't hold up against many of these tunes. Her warmth is felt all over the album, in "Here I'll Stay" she wraps her gentle, but narrow, voice around it and in "My Funny Valentine" she sticks to the lower register of her voice. However, in the re-recording of her classic "Sound of Music" and in "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" her voice fails her, it often sounds thin and airy and it's actually quite sad to listen to. When all is said and done Julie Andrews remains a great talent, and most of that talent is largely due to her amazing capability as a performer and her genuine warmth.
I FELL IN LOVE WITH JULIE ALL OVER AGAIN.......2005-06-25
As a young kid growing up in the Philippines I remember my Dad playing his state-of-the-art Aiwa tape recorder back in the 60s and hearing Julie Andrews' voice - truly the voice of an angel! Now, hearing these songs again with adult ears I fell in love with her voice all over again !
A Great Julie Andrews CD.......2002-01-27
If you are a fan of Dame Julie's and musicals, this is the cd for you. It is a compilation of songs from prevously released albums; The King and I, The Music of Richard Rodgers, Here I'll Stay, and Victor/Victoria, Original Broadway Cast Recording.
I found the material to be very well put together giving the listener selections from My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Sound of Music, Victor/Victoria and others. What more could you want?
As for Ms. Andrews, she is superb. There is simply no one like her. I have heard comments that prior to the infamous throat surgery she was unable to handle the difficult material and hit those high notes. This is just not true. All you have to do is listen to these songs recorded in the early 90's to know that she still had a marvelous voice. Lets hope that one day she will be able to sing and record again. If not, these may be her last recordings so treasure them.
The My Fair Lady suite is wonderful and Ms. Andrews definitely hit the high note at the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night".
Her version of "Edelweiss" and "The Sound of Music" are lovely.
Also worth listening to is "Living in the Shadows" written for the Broadway production of Victor/Victoria so you won't find it on the movie soundtrack. The lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse who also penned "Crazy World", which is another great selection on this cd.
Overall this is a cd worth having in your collection, so buy it today. Otherwise you are missing out.
Climbing Every Mountain with Mary Poppins.......2002-01-22
Julie Andrews and her music have been an inspiration to me
every since I stepped into a theater and watched Mary Poppins
(many years ago). I admire her talent and her voice on this CD. I know it is not as clear a voice as she used to have but I still enjoy listening to her. I listen to this CD when I want a "pick me up" and am proud to have it as part of my collection.

This disc could be more succinctly titled Christmas for Anglophiles. Few sounds are more British than the boy soprano-dominated Choir of King's College in Cambridge. And the group is heard--in some sections recorded live--in an actual Christmastide service amid the generous reverberation of a cathedral acoustic with little more than a tasteful though austere organ accompaniment. The repertoire isn't just conservative, traditional hymns and carols. One is harmonized by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and there are a number of contributions by contemporary composers Thomas Adès, Judith Weir, and John Tavener, all of which are probing, sincere, even personal examples of their art (and some are daringly liberated, harmonically speaking). The downside for some listeners--at least on repeated hearings--is that the entire service is heard, sermons and all. Others may take this in the spirit of a Paul McCreesh liturgical reconstruction, with congregational singing included. --David Patrick Stearns
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful tradition .......2007-01-18
A great experience combining Christmas carols with the reading of Holy Scripture (the lessons). It's a beautiful Christmas worship service in the Anglican tradition. I highly recommend it.
In our age when thing change so fast, it's good to know that some great traditions continue. This recording is one of them.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-12-06
Listening to this one and one-half hour recording is one way to experience the meaning of Christmas. It must be a joy for those who can attend such a service as the "Festival of nine-lessons and carols". To hear the beautiful voices of the King's College Choir and their marvelous organist, Benjamin Bayl. This is all under the direction of Stephen Cleobury, and provides a treat for music lovers everywhere. The carols are related directly to the scripture readings that tell the Christmas Story in its entirety, all read skillfully by various people involved in the program. They are not lengthy, but quite to the point. The related carols are varied as to composer and mood, running the gamut from the traditional to the more recent such as : 'The Truth from above'(Vaughan Williams)-'Illuminare,Jerusalem' (Judith Weir)- and 'The Lamb' (John Tavener). The soloists include:Edward Moore (treble)-Thomas Bullard (baritone)-Adrian Kelly (tenor)-Edward Harries (treble)-and Julian Perkins (baritone). All sang well as did the entire choir. The English sound, that is boy sopranos and male altos, appeal to me personally and show up very well in this particular group. It's all quite emotional and very moving, especially to those who celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday. I've had this disc for several years, and would not think of celebrating Christmas without listening to it several times during the season.
Truely inspirational!!!!.......2001-12-23
A holiday classic. It has been a tradtion in our family for years. This is the first time I've seen it available on CD. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
Don't let this recording pass you by!.......2001-07-10
Do yourself a favor and buy this CD - even if you don't think you like Christmas music. People stand in line for hours to hear the Choir of King's College's annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, and when you hear this recording, you will understand why. Rarely does a choir sound quite as pure, smooth, and "together" as they do on this recording. The selection of music is wonderful. You get a few traditional favorites like "O Come All Ye Faithful", recorded live with the choir and the congregation singing along (I thought this would annoy me but it really doesn't - it only makes me feel the spirit of the ceremony even more). You also get plenty of wonderful choir-only pieces that you've probably never heard before unless you're a big cathedral music enthusiast. It all begins, of course, with a single choirboy singing the first verse of "Once in Royal David's City". It's impossible for me to pick an absolute favorite from this recording. I find "The Fayrfax Carol" by Thomas Ades to be particularly haunting and beautiful. Vaughan Williams' "The Truth from Above" is also very, very lovely. And how could you not enjoy "Up! Good Christen folk, and listen"? There is also Ord's short, but beautiful, "Adam lay ybounden". I like all of these pieces in and of themselves, but I think having them sung so expertly and sweetly by the choir makes me like them even more.
To top it all off, you get about 20 minutes worth of readings and prayers recorded live at the service, interspersed among all of the music. I suppose this could be seen as the recording's only drawback (people talking), but I think it makes the recording much more authentic as a representation of the world-famous service. The readings make the recording more than just a musical experience, but a complete Christmas experience - which is what the ceremony is supposed to be. Besides, if you really hate the talking, that's what the skip button is for.
Go ahead and buy this -- you'll be very glad you did.
A Shining Star.......2000-11-21
To the other fine and informative reviews here, I would add the following. Though the Festival service and the recording are 80% musical, the "lessons", which are brief scripture passages given moving dramatic readings by college personnel, are the backbone of the Festival and the riverbed through which the carols flow. There is a chronological order to the lessons, beginning in Genesis, and each musical selection is tied to the reading which preceded it. This synthesis makes listening to this CD a very spiritual experience that transports one well beyond what is felt listening to other recorded compilations of carols.
The music is primarily drawn from traditional British Christmas repertoire. Well-known British composers over centuries and King's College's organists and music directors over the past century wrote or arranged most of the selections. Several texts are in Olde English or Latin. Three recent compositions are here, too, but the first priority of the Festival director is clearly the tradition and the history of this service and of Christmas in England. There is nothing, however, "musty" about this CD. The tempi are modern and sprightly where indicated, and the performances are transcendent. The Choir of King's College, directed by Stephen Cleobury, consists of 35 young men chosen by highly competitive audition, and they are among the finest choral ensembles in the world. A superb pipe organ played by Benjamin Bayl is the only supplement to the voices.
The sound of the recording is a major improvement from radio broadcasts and earlier (now out-of-print) releases of this service. For this CD, the four-and-a-half hymns in which the congregation sings with the choir were recorded during services in December 1998. The balance of the recording was made in the same chapel in July 1999, without the congregation present, so the coughing and shuffling heard during live broadcasts and earlier live recordings is happily absent. The only small problem is that the reverberating acoustics of the chapel, though gorgeous, make many lyrics difficult to discern. Keep the booklet handy. Highest recommendation.

Lerner & Loewe Songbook.......2006-02-24
If you like Percy Faith's music, you'll like this one. He quit recording and died much too young. But while he lived, he recorded some great music.
Wouldn't it be lovely?.......2005-09-26
This CD represents some of the best of Broadway done in a great pops style. There are five orchestral suites, one each for the following: 'Camelot', 'My Fair Lady', 'Gigi', 'Paint Your Wagon', and 'Bridgadoon'. They are all arranged for orchestra by Robert Russell Bennett, save that for 'Paint Your Wagon', which was arranged by Cincinnati Pops Orchestra director Erich Kunzel.
The works of Lerner and Loewe were a mainstay of Broadway for decades in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but it was during the late 50s and early 60s that their true glory days took hold. The presidential term of John F. Kennedy gained the nickname 'Camelot' in part because of the influence of the Lerner and Loewe production going on at the start. The songs contained in these suites are instantly recognisable by many, as the Lerner and Loewe songs have become so well known that many know the songs better than the musicals or the composers from which they come. 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely' come from 'My Fair Lady', 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls' from 'Gigi' - these are but the most of famous of the familiar tunes.
There are a lot of pieces here that the listener will appreciate, both in remembering old pieces or in learning new nuances to the tunes.
This particular disc by Telarc has a feature called 'Spatializer', which gives a three-dimensional quality to the sterophonic sound, enhancing regular players and working well with surround-sound systems, too. The Cincinnati Pops are expert at this kind of music, having produced dozens of CDs of popular music and modern composers of musicals, film music, and pops-oriented major compositions.
This is a fun disc to have.
A Successful Sequel.......2005-08-03
This CD is a follow-up to the Rodgers & Hammerstein Songbook for Orchestra (1991) from the same team. It is a thoroughly successful sequel: I believe anyone who enjoyed the R&H will enjoy this one as well. If I am very slightly less enthusiastic about this one than the R&H, it's not because of any shortcoming of Kunzel, the Cincinnati Pops, or Telarc, all of whom are at the top of their form. Rather it's because Frederick Loewe, for all his undoubted expertise, is not quite in the same class as a composer with Richard Rodgers. But that's asking a lot, since Rodgers was the American musical theater's leading light. Lerner & Loewe's musicals were second only to R&H's during the golden age of the American musical, and their My Fair Lady is by any standard one of the best musicals ever staged. If Loewe did not create as many unforgettable numbers as Rodgers, he nevertheless wrote many delightful songs and much enjoyable music. This CD features five orchestral suites, ranging in length from 9 to 18 minutes (total playing time 68:06), from Brigadoon (1947), Paint Your Wagon (1951), My Fair Lady (1956), Gigi (film 1958; staged 1973), and Camelot (1960). The arrangements (all but one by Robert Russell Bennett) are expert. The performances are masterly (if perhaps lacking in just a tad of the infectious brio that the same team brought to R&H). And Telarc's robust sound (recorded 1993) would be hard to improve on. Warmly recommended.
Delightful Listening.......1998-12-05
Some of the nicest and nearly forgotten music (Paint your Wagon & Brigadoon) is nicely compiled here. It will make you want to listen to the full soundtracks again, but for a quick tour of Lerner & Lowe, it is very nice.

Album Description
"It's high torque ensemble music, often mesmerizing in effect, precisely and arrestingly detailed, lightly dipped in electronica, and with many novel textures
an intoxicating experience." -ALL ABOUT JAZZ
A recent John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble release on OmniTone was nominated for the forty-eighth annual Grammy Awards (Large Jazz Ensemble category. Over the years, they have developed a unique sound and are well on the way to becoming an institution in Europe.
Customer Reviews:
John Hollenbeck, most interesting jazzman alive.......2007-03-10
And after multiple listenings, I'm beginning to think this may be his greatest accomplishment. What he's done here is to almost completely reconceive the idea of a big band, bringing it entirely into the twenty-first century. This disc breaths and effortlessly moves in precincts never before imagined by writers for and practitioners of big band music. Here, the large jazz ensemble becomes an organic creature, each instrument and section conceived as absolutely integrally related to all others. Hence, there's a kind of democracy of sound, a wild egalitarian consonance between woodwinds, brass, piano, keys, bass, and drums--each grouping or individual voice gaining uncanny gravitas on account of this approach, none standing out above its fellows, all equally leading or supporting as required.
One could, I suppose, regard this as a warm-up for his Large Ensemble, but that would be wrong. There's a weird anarchic serendipity operating here that isn't quite approached on that disc, A Blessing, brilliant as it is. Maybe it's the collaboration of Horst-Michael Schaffer and Heinrich von Kalnein, coleaders of the German Jazz Bigband Graz, with Hollenbeck that gives this disc its special cachet. The sound here is also absolutely spectacular. Whatever it is, I don't know, but this is certainly one of the most, if not the most, riveting jazz disc in my sprawling collection.
Three of the the seven tunes, "Just Like Him," "Abstinence," and "After a Dance or Two, We Sit Down for a Pint with Gil and Tim," have been previously recorded, "Abstinence" on both the Claudia Quintet's first and A Blessing, "After a Dance . . ." on the Claudia Quintet's first, and "Just Like Him" on I, Claudia. But they take on an entirely new character here--both, strangely, more frenetic and more logical.
What John Hollenbeck is doing both with the small jazz ensemble and with big band music is unprecedented (save, perhaps, in the latter case, with Ilhan Ersahin's Nublu Jazz Orchestra). If you want to encounter the absolute cutting edge of 21st century jazz, look no farther. But don't be scared off: there's nothing inaccessible or weirdly avant-garde about this music--just sounds of mystery, power, and wonder.

ROBERT E. LEE COMES TO LIFE!.......2001-01-02
Jimerson has created a recording that gives the listener a wonderful sampling of the music Robert E. Lee would have heard during his lifetime, in a true period style. As a regular visitor to Lee's birthplace, I am impressed by and enjoyed the results of Jimerson's historical research at the Robert E. Lee archives at Stratford Hall.
Not real great.......2000-11-23
Aside from the competent performances of Douglas Jimerson and Jill Worley, the singers and musicians on this CD are rather poor. But the recording is worse - poor quality, and done in such a way as to emphasize defects in the presentation. Whenever David Calib comes in with the drums, everything else is drowned out. Did they put the mike _in_ the drum? Sounds like it. The best numbers were those with Jimerson soloing with only a piano backup. It was therefore very disappointing to hear "All Quiet Along the Potomac" as a trumpet/drum instrumental. All this is not to mention the quibble that the album's connection with Robert E. Lee is a bit strained. Aside from "How Firm a Foundation," most of the songs have very little to do with Lee aside from the fact that his family might conceivably have had the sheet music lying around the house, or they were popular during/after the wars he took part in. Be that as it may, I'm sorry to say that three-quarters of the CD is barely listenable.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful score marred only by Fullerton's harsh soprano.......1999-12-05
Camelot will always remain one of my favourite musicals. It has depth in the score, which develops from the beginning like a beautiful piece of classical music, with leit motifs and developments throughout the musical numbers. Lerner and Loewe excelled themselves with the artistry of this production, despite the problems that the original production encountered. This recording does the score justic, with Richard Harris providing a good characterisation of Arthur and Robert Meadmore's well-sung Lancelot. Unfortuneatly, Fiona Fullerton, who completes the eternal triangle as Guenevere has a harsh quality to her soprano that is slightly uncomfortable on the ear. This show is a must in any serious musical collection, but my recommendation would be the original Broadway cast, with Julie Andrews' heartachingly beautiful Guenevere and Richard Burton as a definitely definitive Arthur.
Lerner & Loewe's Last.......1999-06-07
After MY FAIR LADY and the Academy Award-winning GIGI, what was left to Lerner & Loewe but have a failure? Well, CAMELOT wasn't a failure...quite, but it did open to decidedly cool reviews. Luckily, the box office advance of over $3 million could keep it going its first few months, at which time, in an unprecedented marketing gamble, a large chunk was shown on the ED SULLIVAN SHOW. The next day there were queues at the Box Office.
CAMELOT was blessed with three particular glories. The first was the beautiful, at times achingly, melodic score, Frederick Loewe wrote, matched by Lerner's lyrics, never more romantic or full of longing. The second was the presence of Richard Burton who brought acting ability only rarely seen in a musical. And the third was, of course, the star of Julie Andrews, who by this time (and under Moss Hart's impeccable tutelage) had matured into a thoroughly winning, if not always charismatic, leading lady. Its problem, however, was that old thorn in Alan Jay Lerner's side: The Book. Without the "pre-fabrication" of Shaw's PYGMALION that he'd enjoyed in writing MY FAIR LADY, Lerner floundered and it showed in the dramatically weak script. Over-riding everything, however, was the simple fact that the story was, in the end, a sad one - not a recipe for mega runs on Broadway then. Still, it played over two years, and received recordings around the world. It's represented best on this album, though the score is truncated as was necessary to fit the original LP. You know you're in the hands of melodic genius when very near the start of the overture the beguiling strains of "If Ever I Would Leave You" are heard. And with numbers like the title song and "What Do The Simple Folk Do?" as well as "I Loved You Once In Silence" and "How To Handle A Woman" you're spoilt for riches. Lerner & Loewe broke up after CAMELOT. If only they hadn't.
Brilliant Broadway score superbly recorded.......1998-07-28
The Video Hound review printed here is so complete that I have very little to add other than when one listens to the Original Cast Recording it should be remembered that the Kennedy administration embraced the show and its ideals and that those of us who lived through those golden Camelot days - the last days of innocence since the end of WW II which were to be shattered by the Kennedy assassination - find a magic, a beauty, a golden glow in the sounds of this album, which more than any other in Broadway history, stood for something more than mere entertainment. A must for every CD collector.

Album Description
Julianne Baird writes: "Music and the social status it expressed was an integral part of Jane Austen's life. Her novels are replete with details of domestic musical activities. Accounts of public concerts and private balls as well as music programs with hired musicians fill her letters. A dedicated amateur herself, Austen ordinarily played at the pianoforte at least an hour a day before breakfast from the 8-book music collection now preserved in her home at Chawton. For nieces and nephews she practiced 'country dances,' a number of which appear in her collections. Austen painstakingly copied and bound music that especially interested her. Two books are in her own hand - one of piano pieces and the other (Book III), of vocal music, recorded here in its entirety. Some pieces contain her own suggestions for ornamentation. Prominent themes are naval affairs, country life, drinking songs, love, Turkish and Moorish motifs, female character pieces, and the French Revolution. The novels of Jane Austen reveal her as a keen observer of early 19th century English society. Now, through her Songbook, she herself springs to life: her special likes and dislikes, her boisterous sense of humor, her passions, the way she amused herself and what she was like relaxing with her family and friends." This is a very special album indeed.
Customer Reviews:
This CD is Nice..... But I like Jane Austen Companion Better.......2007-01-16
This CD is nice but not one that I will listen to often.
The fact that you get to hear what music Jane Austen liked is quite amazing. When you think I'm listening to music that Jane Austen listened to over 200 years ago.
However I'm not a great fan of Opera Music and that is probably why this CD is not one that I will listen to often.
But if you like listening to Opera Music. You will like this CD.
Beautiful vocal music.......2005-10-17
This collection is wonderful and gives us an opportunity to experience some of Austen's favorite music.
