The last time Bruce Springsteen gave up E Street for Folk Street, the band of fiddles, banjos, and accordions--sans audience--was recording 2006's We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions in the informality of his living room. This time the Boss takes his American-music foray to Ireland for a three-night stint on the north quay of Dublin's River Liffey. The 23 songs drawn from those performances cover most of the songs from the Pete Seeger tribute, but venture drastically into Springsteen's popular back catalog ("Atlantic City," "Highway Patrolman," "Blinded By the Light") while delving further into his affinity for multiple styles of music, from folk and blues to gospel and country. "If I Should Fall Behind" plays like a tear-jerking last call in a dimly lit pub. "Open All Night" has been shaped into pure swing, complete with pedal steel and sax. And "Jesse James," with its furious banjo, spectator handclaps, and Springsteen howl, could pass for the Pogues, circa 1985. Bruce continues on his road to irrelevance. The further he gets away from his roots, New Jersey, etc. the less he is worth spending time with. He seems to want to be the bard of the new left, to take residence in pretention row. Come back to Wildewood!

Bruce Springsteen with the Sessions; Band Live In Dublin.
If you were lucky enough to see Bruce on this tour you have an idea how fun this Cd is. Like any great artists Springsteen can give you something fun with a little extra to think about. In some cases as with Born In The USA most listeners didn't understand what he was saying at all. I saw Sting a fews years back and he mentioned his dismay at how people have interpreted Every Breath You Take as a love song and some couples were actually using it as a wedding song.
The Dublin Sessions is a 2 disc set filled with many of the folk songs from the Seeger Sessions, full of defiance, perseverance and struggle. The hole CD is reminiscent of a John Steinbeck novel. Somehow Springsteen takes all this heaviness and makes it fun to listen to. The live shows were great fun filled with that tinge in the back of your mind reminding you about the horrors of war and the plight of the common man.
I had wondered why Bruce had decided to record the concert in Dublin. I thought maybe he was continuing his trip around the world, Asbury Park, E Street, Nebraska, USA and Dublin. When I heard Mrs. McGrath I knew in an instant why he picked Dublin and it was a great choice.
Some of the best parts of this CD are of Springsteen's own tunes recorded live with the "Sessions Band" Atlantic City, Gowin' Up and Blinded By The Light all have a fresh and unusual that you should find exciting.

I almost didn't buy "Live in Dublin" because it contained several songs I already had on "We Shall Overcome." However, due to the fact that my daughter gave me a gift certificate for my birthday and the price was right ($11.99), I felt I had nothing to lose.

Clearly, The Boss was having a good time in Dublin. His voice cracks, croaks and groans at times, but it's still vintage Springsteen. The backup band is outstanding. Normally, you couldn't mix bluegrass fiddles with a horn section on a single recording. But somehow, they pull it off - and it sounds great.

He also completely rearranges "Atlantic City" and "Blinded By the Light" to the point where they're all new songs. You have to play the haunting "When the Saints Go Marching In" a few times to enjoy it.

My personal favorites are "Long Time Coming" and "Further Down the Road," although there are only a few songs that I consider filler crap.

Crank it up. It's summer. It's definitely Springsteen.

Powerful, raucous, joyful, heartbreaking.......2007-07-13

I'll echo the other reviewers and say that this is undoubtedly the best live CD I've ever heard, a testament to a combination of the music, lyrics, players, and timeliness of the message.

Springsteen is almost impossible to review, but I'll just say that, as much as I loved the Rising, Live in Barcelona, and Devils and Dust, the Seeger Sessions and this live album have taken him into a musical stratosphere that maybe only Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson can touch -- pure Americana.

Most of the other reviewers have adequately pointed out the highlights, but I'll say that the mournful dirge that the band transformed "When the Saints Come Marching In" to made tears stream down my face when I first heard this version, especially as it comes in the set after "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live". Folk music is as relevant as it ever was.

If you like any strain of Americana roots music -- blues, folk, jazz, gospel, Western swing, roots country, mountain/Scots/Irish music -- this concert will blow you away and make you sing with the crowd.

A Fine Frenzy is actually just a fine young singer-songwriter from Seattle, born Alison Sudol. A self-taught piano player, on her debut album she pairs sweeping orchestral arrangements with dreamlike lyrics inspired by the classic works of fantasy writers like CS Lewis, EB White, and Lewis Carroll. Add to that a propensity for frilly shirts and cryptic song titles such as "The Minnow & the Trout" and you half-expect to find a back alley Joanna Newsom. Instead Sudol specializes in accessible pop epics, the kind of songs that fit perfectly over the end credits of a great Hollywood tearjerker. Despite the gentle melancholia that runs through "Ashes and Wine" and "You Picked Me," each tune arrives wrapped in an exuberant melody and topped by the singer's commanding voice. I heard A Fine Frenzy on One Tree Hill and really loved what I heard. i am very happy to have the whole cd now! My favorites are Minnow and the trout, You Picked Me, Almost Lover, Last of Days, Near To You, and Hope fotr the hopeless but i really like all of them really. I kind of hope Alison doesnt get too famous because i feel like ive found a best kept secret!! I have been listening to this album non stop!

I can't remember what prompted me to order ths album. I had never heard of A Fine Frenzy or Alison Sudol, but something in the Amazon marketing machine suggested it to me-- whether it was recommended or a "deal" if I bought two, I don't know. I am sure a listened to the 30 sec. teasers, and gave it a shot.

I think Alison Sudol may have the loveliest voice I have heard since Sarah McLachlan and/or Eva Cassidy. That is a major concession from me. I am a lyrics lover to the core, and so far I am impressed. Maybe I am easy, but you will have to decide for yourself.

Amazing Debut Album.......2007-07-21

I just heard this album last night and am already in love with it. I've been listening to it non-stop and it has only become more brilliant. The music is gorgeous and has utterly transfixed me. I can't recommend it enough!

If you love/like Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Sarah McLachlan, Imogen Heap/Frou Frou then you will love A Fine Frenzy.

One Cell in the Sea: A sonorous journey.......2007-07-19

Lately we've been greeted with a king's court full of singer/songwriters. I don't review their music too often and when I do, I can only draft a few terse sentences. For my part, I find many of them to be musicians, not artists. Musicians merely recite their compositions and, after a few repeat plays, I'm left hollow, finding little of themselves, their vulnerability, in the work. The artists, however, paint, weave, and sculpt with music, and you know what dangerous creatures they can be, cleverly lacing the notes with their aspirations, their fears, their essence. You can sense it in their voice, every syllable of the lyrics as they slip into you.

Such is the case with A Fine Frenzy. When I heard their album, One Cell in the Sea, I was struck by its dimensionality. With her vocal and writing talents, singer/songwriter Alison Sudol folds our hand into hers and guides us through her mysterious wonderland (evidenced by the album's cool cover and booklet art), conjuring picturesque landscapes with "Come On, Come Out", the excellent "Rangers", "You Picked Me" and "The Minnow and the Trout" and ensnaring us in sumptuous wine-dark woodlands with her intimate offerings "Almost Lover", "Hope for the Hopeless", "Near to You" and "Ashes and Wine".

By the time the final track, "Borrowed Time", concluded, I found myself in a well of thoughts and emotions, albeit delightedly so. Sudol has not only crafted an outstanding and bravely personal album, but a magical world I look forward to visiting time and again.

On Breakfast in Bed, her first release on Time Life Records (yes, that Time Life) Joan Osborne tackles a crop of hand-picked soul and R&B favorites with equal parts sass and sensitivity. Long an underappreciated artist, Osborne is a performer with the wisdom to exercise vocal restraint for an effect that's more Dusty Springfield than Christina Aguilera. Her fine previous outing interpreting soul standards was aptly titled How Sweet It Is, and witness her contribution to the terrific 2002 film Standing in the Shadows of Motown, where Osborne's astute readings of "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" and "Heatwave" outshone performers like Ben Harper and Gerald Levert (happily, both songs are included here). The title track and Hall and Oates' "Sara Smile" are both canny choices that play to her strengths in delivering credible blue-eyed soul, and six new Osborne-penned songs fit neatly into the record. If her compositions pale a bit next to the classics she covers (with the sultry and slithery exception of the excellent "Eliminate the Night"), give Osborne credit for bravely placing herself side-by-side with songwriting luminaries like Holland-Dozier-Holland and Bill Withers. Breakfast in Bed makes for a leisurely listen on a sunny Sunday morning, so put up your feet and stay awhile. --Ben Heege

Okay if you like love songs with kind of an R&B rhythm. (which the entire cd is) I love Joan Osborn's other work, but this is not one of them . . . Excellent artist ~ poor song selection.

You can't go wrong........2007-07-25

This intriguing mix cover songs and originals make this a very enjoyable collection, although the covers are not as varied as say Annie Lennox's Medusa but still engaging all the same. The tracks seem to pull you in more and more with each listen. "Baby is a Butterfly", "Sarah Smile" and "Cream Dream" were all particularly absorbing the first time through. The production is very good and clean. Her voice is as mesmerizing and sensual as always. You can't go wrong.

Since I first heard Spiderweb on the radio before Relish was widely released I knew I was going to like this woman's work. Over the years I've collected pretty much all Joan's recordings including trades of several soundboard live recordings. With Breakfast in Bed Joan delivers again. She's always doing a change up from release to release.
Ain't No Sunshine by Bill Withers is the only cover ever I've heard that even rates. My sister and I wore Bill's 45 out 2 or 3 times when we were kids. The originals powerful bass line is absent here but Joan's production showcasing drums and of course, her voice makes my memory of Bill's version fade. Joan redefines it without overshadowing it. This is true for many of the covers. The title track I could do without though. Breakfast in Bed was a walk through. A strong cup of coffee....and. Eliminate The Night would work for me as a title tune and an opener. I've Got to Use My Imagination, Midnight Train to Georgia and Sara Smile are renewed and fresh. Heat Wave and What Becomes of the Brokenhearted are repeated from Standing in the Shadows of Motown. Take note of this CD with other Motown covers by Ben Harper, Chaka Khan and Bootsy Collins among others.
Originals Baby Is a Butterfly, Eliminate the Night & I Know What's Goin' On are ones I've heard live before and they have matured.
I'd like to hear a raw & nasty version of Eliminate the Night live. She's playing Concord New Hampshire's Capitol Center for the Arts this November. It's a small venue that's perfect for Joan to showcase her work. Think about getting her Early Recordings CD before you go. If you haven't seen her headline a show in the past and live in New England then take the trek, you won't be disappointed.
I hope she hasn't let Andrew Carrillo get away. Her guitar player on much of her past work has appeared in recent live shows but he's missing here. He joined his brother Frank Carillo & The Bandoleros on their 2005 release Bad Out There. Well worth a listen.
Breakfast in Bed doesn't suffer any though I wonder what's up. He gets my vote for the title "Master of the Telecaster", given to greats Roy Buchanan, Keith Richards, Albert "The Iceman" Collins, Danny Gatton and few others. The "Tele" was the first solid body electric guitar mass produced and while it's design has been copied and modified over the years the standard set-up used by Andrew defined much of Joan's earlier work.
When I hear Joan's new CDs one or two tunes demand notice. Further listens and the whole work becomes seamless.
Joan takes her time between releases. There could be two CDs here. A few more originals could be made into to one CD and the covers working separately as another disc. I don't know if it's production advice, recording contracts or a lack of confidence by Joan on about her own writing but a real Joan Osborne collection hasn't been released since Righteous Love. Relish and Righteous Love mixed in covers but little enough that Joan's own songs made a greater statement. I'm going to make compilations of all her work when I figure out how to use my Ipod.
I have to admit a big bias here. I see Joan Osborne music or concert listings and shell out cash. It's a shame that when I mention Joan I am met with blank looks. Who? Mention What If God Was One Of Us people take note. Really the least important of her work it now sounds like weak pop to me. It may sound as familiar as Stairway to Heaven to many who don't even recognize her name. That song seems to pop up everywhere. If you love this CD and haven't heard others check out her collection. Start with Early Recordings, Relish Righteous Love, or How Sweet It Is.
I do look forward to seeing some more raw, throaty and hard driving music by Joan. But, in 1975 I was listening equally to Carly Simon and Lynyrd Skynyrd. My friends thought I was nuts!
Don't miss Breakfast in Bed but, take care of it or buy two you might wear this CD out and end up asking yourself what happened to Bill Withers?

As one reviewer noted, this release is somewhat monotone. Still, it's a relaxing and quality release from Joan that my wife really likes. Getting "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" is a bonus.

A couple of the originals are really excellent, stay in your head tunes. I'd say if your having Breakfast in Bed, it works. But it's not an all occasions, "hey check this out" kind of release.

Joan O. has got it.......2007-07-19

I'm becoming a bigger fan of Joan every day. I loved her last album, Pretty Little Stranger, even though it was a bit country for her, and I'm not a country music fan. I'm interested in checking out this collection of her covering pop hits. She does covers well, and her voice is so obviously hers, that even though it might be a song you have heard enough times already in your life, hearing the "Joan" version is always a treat. I'm sorry this is not a review of this album in particular, I do plan to get it soon. I'll let you know then! I'm giving 5 stars based on the Amazon video and audio samples. What I can say is that her previous albums are all great, and her live shows are awesome, especially if you can be lucky enough to see her in a smaller venue.

The first time I saw her was pretty much by accident. I wound up crossing through the front of a very large crowd between acts at a Woodstock reunion in Bethel, NY (not Pepsistock in Saugeraties), in the late 90's. Then Joan and her band came on and I'm front and center and she blew me away with St. Teressa or something like that. I've been a fan ever since.

There's a reason Barbra Streisand's 2006 tour broke the arena house record in every city it visited, and it's because she's not only a legend but (still) a performer who effortlessly twists intimacy and friendliness and fierceness into a perfect, sturdy braid. Another concert album.......2007-07-18

I love Barbra and her music. I went to see her concert last year, so I bought this CD set to remind of that moment. While all her albums are a joy to listen to, I found this one to be more of the same. Some of her concert albums from the 1990s are better and more powerful. Her voice is not quite as strong, she does not hold those notes quite as long. Didn't care much for her backup band, Il Divo. Nevertheless, the album is a delight.

Wrong To Be Profane.......2007-07-14

Despite habitually retractable tentative hints of private integrity and partly with a guise of ignorance regarding sacred sexualities in marital contexts, Ms. Streisand has, apparently yearning for ethical integrities of others and herself, completed another celebration of my and her own conceptions. I have neither attended any of her concerts nor, as of yet, watched any record of these from 2006, though I both watched her portral in New York City at the Winter Garden Theater of Ms. Fanny Brice and found most of this 2-CD set comparable to that 2-stars (rated) portrayal; some of the rest is so astonishingly beautiful, particularly the first 4 tracks of CD 2 involving the birthdays of Jason G. and his mother, it makes this set worthy of placement beside some of the music composed by Gustav Mahler, who referred to the deaths of some children musically.

STREISAND STILL THE BEST!.......2007-07-13

Barbara Streisand and Il Divo what more could you ask for! Her best album in years and with Il Divo on numbers like There's A Place For Us it gives you chills. Buy this and you will enjoy it full volume year after year!

Not the Best of Barbra.......2007-07-07

Streisand's lastest CD, *Guilty Pleasures* was a feast of songs she had never sung before, and a reunion with Barry Gibb, who writes for Barbra in a more contemporary way than the Bergmans or Marvin Hamlisch. It is a great CD, and her voice is sublime, aided, of course, by sound technicians. All artists owe their sound engineers their careers though. She and Barry have fun on it--it's fresh and alive. Not so much with the 2006 Concert CD, a recording of the concert tour, replete with IL Divo, a mostly unnecessary addition. They are wooden men with BIG, BORING voices.

From the beginning, Babs sounds tired, hoarse and raspy. I saw her in concert, where she sometimes sounded even worse than this recording. The engineers cleaned it up as well as they could, leaving more than a hint of breathiness and weariness. Fortunately, only about half of the songs are weakly rendered; the other half really are terrific experiences. I have no idea what is going on with her voice that from song to song there could be such differences, but if I were Streisand I would leave the belting behind. It wouldn't hurt for her to warm up before she comes onstage, not as she is giving the concert. For any price, a fan would expect the performer to be well prepared. When she sings a soft ballad, she often soars, and her magic is prominent. It's painful to watch her crumble under the memory of her once youthful voice (and it was only a few years ago that she sounded like a 25 year old songstress). Streisand knows how to play a song for all its worth, but she sometimes tramples it to death. *Don't Rain in My Parade* is just not what it used to be. She hits high notes, but without the characteristic force. And she can hold the notes, or seem to, when she takes little breaks before each song's finale. Her phrasing is impeccable when she is giving it all she has to give, but too often she seems bored. This is not a bad CD, just not as inspired as *The Concert.*

It also has to be said that it seems apparent Streisand is not taking care of her God-given voice, one she herself has said that she takes for granted (unimaginable!!).

The chatter inbetween songs is dull and preachy, and it was exactly the same in every city, except for blabbering about the fattening food she ate all across the US (excluded from the CD, thank the Lord). The fans are really the stars on this CD--they roar constantly, as if they had been starving to see Streisand all their lives. It's an odd treat. The orchestra is incredible, but live, it drowns her out at times (as does IL Divo). This recording does not relfect that though.

If you do not own *The Concert* CD, buy it and skip this one. This CD is for avid, adoration-is-blind Streisand fans only and those keeping track of Streisand's vocal history..

Whenever I hear Barbra sing it feels as if I were listening to an angel....The depth of her voice, the feeling she caries in every song she sings makes you fall in love, feel despair, feel hapinness or sadness....She is capable of making you feel the letter of her songs....A true Diva....My only regret is that I will never be able to see her live.....I hope they make a DVD of this concert so I can see her perform live at least on the TV set...

Ah, poor Jim M., if he'd only stayed away from tobacco, alcohol and other dangerous drugs, he'd probably still be around AND this collection wouldn't have been so bad! I think this release could have left out the part about Jim's wanting to exhibit his "goods", too!

I was excited when I saw this CD set was coming out. I bought The Doors In Concert several years ago, so I was hoping this was more of the same. When I listened to this new release, I couldn't have been more disappointed. Jim Morrison is so obliterated through most of it that he mumbles lyrics and is totally out of key. I guess the surviving members of the band must be hard up for money to put something like this out there. Frankly, they'd have to pay me to keep a copy. Don't waste your money.

i've heard some of this cd. live shows, come out rough sometimes and other times sounds like a cd. i saw the doors in 1967 at uc irvine for $3.50. they were great!

Far from The Doors at their best.......2007-07-25

Live In Boston is easily the weakest live Doors album yet. Jim is drunk and his performance seriously suffers. I was able to tolerate (and even enjoy) most of it, but I would not be surprised if someone shut this off after a few songs. Sadly, Jim only gets worse as the show goes on. A lack of pro-recorded shows and the ability to market this as "Jim Morrison at his wildest!" are the only reasons why this show is being released. If you have all the previous live Doors releases and don't mind hearing a very rough performance, go ahead and check this one out. I've enjoyed listening to it, but I'm sure it wont become a favorite. There is much better live Doors material out there. If you don't own any Doors live albums yet, start with Live in Philadelphia or Live in Detroit. Both of those shows are vastly superior to Live in Boston.

This might have been a great set if Morrison wasn't so drunk. I mean he is really hammered, to the point of slurring lyrics. The band does a great job as usual, but there are better live recordings of the Doors out there.

Why Warren Zevon's Stand in the Fire has languished in the CD-reissue era is a mystery. It's an unbridled live rock album, recorded in 1981 when live albums were de rigueur. Zevon, for all the well-orchestrated rock (and great backing vocals on "Mohammed's Radio"), was a small-venue guy and an unlikely rocker. Warren's shining moment. That this incredible album only existed on out-of-print vinyl and cassette (and a year ago, on a very limited, expensive Japanese import CD) for so long was a travesty; at long last this error has been corrected. Warren is simply "on fire" at the shows this was taken from, and man, does this lay to waste the studio versions! The backing band, Boulder, is fantastic, with a superb lead guitarist. While one might want to start with "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" (the Anthology on Rhino, not the book; that is for fanatics ONLY), this is far better. Get the anthology double set, this and The Wind; then proceed to, oh, Learning to Flinch (how could "I'll Sleep when I'm Dead" leave off "The Worrier King"??)(or choose the live version of The Indifference of Heaven over the studio one?)Anyways, this disc is Warren in all his glory, with stupendous versions of...well, everything! But especially Jeannie Needs A Shooter,Excitable Boy, and Lawyers,Guns,and Money. The title track is a SUPERB rocker, and The Sin is excellent as well,and you'll only hear them here. The bonus tracks are a nice treat, with Johnny Strikes Up The Band being the best of them. Get this. If you have no concept of Warren other than the "acoustic Heavy Metal troubadour", or the balladeer of beautifully sensitive songs that comprise most of The Wind, this CD will suprise you nicely. AWESOME.

I got this in college and had been looking for years for this disc. Once I got it in my hands and put it in the disc player it was like being reunited with an old friend.

I saw Warren twice in acoustic shows, but never got the chance to see him with a full band. This is a great live recording; raw, electric and alive with a unique vitality. Warren takes the energy of the audience and channels it into a vivid preformance. He was one of the most honest rock n roll artists ever. This disc is a must have. Incredible versions of "Lawyers, Guns and Money", "Excitable Boy" among others. Nothing weak on this album. Your collection is not complete until you add this disc.

An interesting piece of Warren Zevon's musical development.......2007-06-29

Representing one of Zevon's very early musical experiments, Stand in the Fire is a live album with ALOT of energy. He was young and wild (he was such an excitable boy). Luckily, his musical talent evolved with time & experience. Both his writing and presentation of his songs improved with age. I rated this CD a "3", mostly for historical interest in his developing talent, & less for pure musical enjoyment.

How do you condense 15 years of music down to 76 minutes? In the case of this survey of the second phase of R.E.M.'s career, the answer is: Exceptionally well. This is good collection of songs from R.E.M. from their Warner Brothers years but there are some hits missing. The obvious hits are there, like Man On the Moon, What's The Frequency, Kenneth?, Everyboby Hurts, etc. This collection is of their mainstream hits while there is another collection of hits "The IRS Years", which are songs from before 1988, which were hits in nerdy college radio stations.

It comes as little surprise that John Doe employs three different female vocalists (Kathleen Edwards, Jill Sobule, and Aimee Mann) to assist on A Year in the Wilderness. After all, it was Exene Cervenka's restless harmonies that bolstered Doe's own dusky lead vocals, providing X with a distinctive sound that has seldom been imitated and never bested, even by the group's own alumni. Doe nonetheless continues to refine the formula, delivering sharp, literate lyrics to rugged, often pensive odes. He mines a kinder, gentler, but no less incisive territory of the somewhat precarious space between the sexes. Doe even strums an acoustic guitar in full folk-ballad mode on "A Little More Time," a somber reflection on love lost. Former X guitarist Dave Alvin provides rootsy firepower on the driving "Hotel Ghost," as close as this disc comes to the old L.A. punk days. But Doe's raw approach chafes at the introspective nature of these songs, adding somber, gritty gravity to the uncompromising lyrics of "Unforgiven," "you say I'm good for nothing, so nothing's good enough for me." While the set lacks the blazing nervousness of X's best material, the older/wiser Doe preserves an uneasy sense of youthful alienation that sports a musically grizzled, five-o'clock shadow. An Undiscovered American Treasure.......2007-07-21

After being introduced to X in the early 80's, John Doe has never let me down. This album is no exception. He was part of my soundtrack to growing up in LA. Hearing him jam with Dave Alvin on Hotel Ghost really brought me back. Even Kathleen Edwards adds a little Yin to John's Yang the way Exene did back in the day, especially on Lean out yr window. He's as raw as ever. Maybe his words have matured, but his delivery is like it was in '85. I'm actually going to see him next Thursday in NYC and I'm beside myself with anticipation. If you don't' know John Doe, your need to. Although he's been in more movies than I can count, if you are a John Doe fan, you gotta see Roadside Prophets. He's the best.

Although a long-time fan of X, I'd never bought any of John Doe's solo work before. I read a good review of this album in the LA Times, and thought I'd take a shot.....

I love it. The most commercial cut is "The Golden State", a great tune. I think my favorite song is "Unforgiven", and "Big Moon" seems to haunt my head. The whole album has this vibe that I can't describe, other than to say I find myself wanting to play it almost every day. It has a "deep sound", both musically and lyrically. The songs flow so well that listening is effortless, and leaves you wanting more when the album is finished.

I believe than John Doe is a great creative talent who seems to get better with age. You won't regret buying this release; on the strength of this one, I'm going to buy some of his previous releases!

Spend Some Time in the Wilderness.......2007-06-28

From the rollicking rhythm of "There's a Hole" to the breathtakingly soft intensity of "Grain of Salt," from the seductive and bluesy "Big Moon" to the "hauntingly" punkish "Hotel Ghost, "A Year in the Wilderness" contains all of the elements that have made John Doe one of America's greatest (although often underappreciated) singer/songwriters: poetic lyrics, vocal intensity, and well-chosen guests.

No one expresses the possibility, the longing and the loss of the landscape of love better than Doe. Like the wilderness, Doe's landscape is striking-- awe-inspiringly beautiful and able to make us feel connected to each other and the world while it resonates with a sense of isolation. This album features some of Doe's best writing to date, yet even when he makes use of a familiar phrase his delivery is transformative. No where is this clearer than in "The Golden State" where Doe uses phrases so familiar they have become clichés and transforms them in to a unique and powerful revelation about the complex nature of relationships through the alchemy of his delivery.

This album is a must have for long time Doe fans and a wonderful introduction to his work for those discovering him for the first time.

I've loved having John's solo work all to myself...pop music's best kept secret...music to share with your most musically sophisticated friends...music for long road trips. I suppose that's all over now.

And it's about time.

Because this MF is too big, too smart, too rocking, too cutting, to be denied a wide audience. I would love to see this thing come out of left field and sell 6 million copies, and have John win 5 or 6 Grammy's next February. Not that awards mean anything, but every once in awhile it's nice to see an exceptional artist, at his best, get recognized.

After a shaky start followed by several critically acclaimed releases, the English group Supertramp hit the commercial jackpot in 1979 with Breakfast in America. The album combined the band's FM radio, AOR-rock style with an almost carnival-like nature. This album, back in 1978, seemed like it had fallen from heaven. The production values are gorgeous, resembling the WIlsons' studio work in finesse and brilliance. The songs themselves, from "Gone Hollywood" and "Goodbye Stranger" to "Take the Long Way home" could be baby-boomers-hipster's national anthems. Use of sounds like harmonica, whistling, clarinet and sax, and Hodgson's very searing guitar work, at select times (as in Goodbye Stranger) are reminiscent of the Beach Boys and Beatles as well. This is really glorious pop rock, informed by classical, jazz, and hard rock influences. The beats of the songs measure, very carefully, a kind of hammering, clattering dance beat--this is, as another said, very fun music. Biting social commentary, as well, on the star machine, and consumerist society. These guys had it all, and here they were meshed together tighter than a Toyota six-speed. Rev this thing up and let 'er fly.

When I Was Young...............................................2007-05-05

This is not Supertramps best. Crime Of The Century is the best Supertramp album. But this is still unforgetable music. I do think Supertramp sold out alittle with this album. But at least there music still turned out great(unlike Guns 'n' Roses). The melodies are great, the lyrics are incredably addictive, and it's just really fun to listen to. The reason I only gave this album 4 stars is because of the slight sell-out factor and the fact that there are 2 very weak songs. I just never really liked Gone Hollywood and Oh Darling. They seem like boring, overly long fillers. Thats all the complaints I have. The rest of this album is 24 kt gold. The Logical Song is one of there most popular as it should be. I have never heard so many adjectives in one song. Goodbye Stranger is one of Supertramp's all-time best. So is Breakfest In America(the song). Both of those songs just make you feel all golly and happy. And then when their done, you feel like crap again. Take The Long Way Home is a absolute masterpiece. A very haunting and blue song. Just Another Nervous Wreck is one of the most underrated Supertramp songs ever. That song gets stuck in your head. This whole album gets stuck in your head. Even the songs I did not mention are really good. Overall, a truly enjoyable experience. So what if it's pop rock? WANNA FIGHT ABOUT IT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

You should know that it is nearly impossible for me to review this album. So great is my love for this classic that I can only find good things to say about it, and 'review' implies that one is at least partially impartial. How's that for a contradiction in terms? Well, let's get crackin', shall we?

This album has been a part of my life since the first time I switched on the radio in 1979 and heard 'Goodbye Stranger' pouring forth from the tinny speakers of my sisters' transistor. (If I ever started a band I believe I would call it Sisters' Transistor. 'S got a ring to it, don't you agree?) I have owned this in every format it was made available in, with the exception of 8 track, as I was too young to own an 8 track player before they were discredited and laughed off the face of the earth. These tunes have permeated my subconsciousness to such an extent that when I pop this disc in and hit Play I am instantly transported to the late 70s, just as if no time had passed at all. Just as if I could simply call up my buddies and we'd trudge down to Kovac's for a Marathon bar once again. This isn't so much music as it is nostalgia, but I confessed from the outset that I'm not an impartial judge of this recording!

'Gone Hollywood' makes it clear that Supertamp viewed American culture with wry and witty bemusement at best. The previously mentioned 'Goodbye Stranger' features the finest example of whistling to ever appear in pop music coupled with an unforgettable hook, and 'Just Another Nervous Wreck' should have served as an anthem for Underdogs everywhere. If only music this intelligent and durable were still in high demand now! 'Breakfast In America' stands as a snapshot of a vanished musical milieu, but like all genuine classics it transcends it's time and place in order to delight the ears of music lovers of all places and all centuries.

Songs in the Key of Life (1976) was the highest high point of Stevie Wonder's career. More sprawling than Innervisions and Talking Book, this two-LP-plus-EP was also less of a consistent stunner than either of those masterworks. That Songs retains an enormous amount of visionary relevance, though, is demonstrated not only in Coolio's borrowing of "Pastime Paradise" as a template for "Gangsta's Paradise," but in the cold-as-ice synthesized string quartet of "Village Ghetto Land." This is Stevie, so naturally that cut's anger is balanced by the ultra-buoyant "I Wish," "Sir Duke," and "Another Star." The 2000 reissue boasts radically improved remastered sound. --Rickey Wright

Undeniably classic Stevie Wonder. If you're a fan you have to have this one; if you're new to Stevie this is the place to start. Unlike some of his sugar sweet music from the 1980s, Songs In The Key Of Life has some melodies that can only be described as "haunting" -- they stay with you a lifetime. Some believe that a great meal should be paired with a great wine. Here, each melody is paired with the right lyrics. It's perfect and it's also the one album I would take if I could take only one to a desert island banishment.

The definition of music at its best........2007-06-17

If you check your local music store and looked through the Stevie Wonder CDs, you are likely to find this album more than the other albums (aside from "A Time To Love.") Though this album is over 30 years old, it's still in demand, and with a good reason: the 21 songs on this album are some of the greatest works to ever enter the music industry.

Most artists these days stick to one type of music, rarely trying something different. Wonder, on the other hand, has mastered not only his usual R&B and funk songs such as "I Wish," but on this album he also throws in some Latin, classical and funk/rock fusion twists, and he delivers them just as well as his usual genre.

Wonder without a doubt has talent in songwriting. He sings about almost everything that you can sing about, such as world peace ("Love's In Need Of Love Today"), love ("Knocks Me Off My Feet"), heartbreak ("Another Star"), world problems ("Village Ghetto Land") and equality ("Black Man") to name a few. No matter what he sings about he delivers some of the best vocals, lyrics and composing of all time. Most of his songs are upbeat and danceable, such as "Ngiculela" and "Sir Duke." "As" and "Summer Soft" are the most beautiful, poetic songs on the album and the music accompanying them are just as extraordinary. The funk songs Wonder is known for are also here. "I Wish" and "All Day Sucker" are funkier than "Superstition" from the album "Talking Book." "Ebony Eyes" is a very fun song that has a slight Beatles feel to it.

Wonder also includes two instrumentals: "Contusion" and "Easy Goin' Evening." Both of them show Wonder's skill with instruments, especially the harmonica (in "Easy Goin' Evening") which he is very well known for. "Contusion" is a great display of R&B/rock fusion and is very fun to dance to.

With twenty-one songs on this album, each of them some of the greatest songs ever, it's difficult to not like the album. This is music at its absolute best.

You Can't NOT Give This Album 5 Stars.......2007-06-08

I never really considered myself a Stevie Wonder fan, but after listening to this album, I realize why people love him so much. The songs off this album have been sampled and re-recorded by so many other artists it's scary! His R&B songwriting was second to none during the mid 70s.
