Combining girl-group hooks and harmonies with high-octane, Motor City garage rock, the Detroit Cobras conjure the 1960s era of Top 40 AM radio and vinyl 45s. Though the results are considerably poppier than the band's name and the light bondage of the album title and cover might suggest, singer Rachel Nagy has attitude to burn and the mixed-gender band plays with plenty of rough-hewn energy. Material (none of it written by the band) includes minor '60s hits such as "Nothing But a Heartache" and "Leave My Kitten Alone," obscurities from classic songwriters such as Gerry Goffin and Jerry Ragavoy (as well as James Brown and Dr. John) and a hopped-up rendition of the Depression-era folk standard "On a Monday." --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2007-06-08

I like the album a lot. I have been a fan of the Detroit cobras for a few years now, and though I dont think any of their albums will top "Baby" this one comes pretty close. Typical of the cobras good energy and great vocals.

4 out of 5 stars A Step Up.......2007-05-20

Tied & True is a step up for one of the most fun Garage acts out there. The Detroit Cobras have been touring an d playing for a couple of years now. With each album they manage to uncover about a dozen rare R&B gems and turn those into their own. Their strength lies in the up tempo songs. The Cobras manage to hide their weaknesses best when they get to speed it up a notch. For tied and true that means that "As Long as I have You" (an original for Garnet Mims) or Little Willie John's "Leave My Kitten Alone" become stand out tracks. Yet Tied and True is also the first Cobras album where they manage to hold the ballads together at least. Dori Gayson's "Try Love" is one of those pleasant surprises on this new Cobras record. Rachel Nagy is as sloppy as it is passionate and affectionate. The love for R&B shines through making her limitations as a vocalist secondary. The Cobras seldom improve on the originals, but they display a deep understanding of R&B with every new record. They don't try to copy the artists but reinterpreted the songs in a way that feels comfortable to the band. With the help of Greg Cartwright from the Reigning Sound makes tied and true another fine effort from the Cobras and the first that sounds like some extra effort has gone into the production which helps the album tremendously. Some of the tracks sound layered, reminiscent of Phil Spector in way, without them loosing their raw and sparse edge. The Cobras is simply the best bar band or oldies act out there, every new album is a joy and you won't regret buying this one. Although I must ad that it almost seems a sin to buy it on cd and not wait on the vinyl release.

3 out of 5 stars a decent effort, but nothing amazing.......2007-04-26

This is probably the weakest album for this great band. I suspect that only hardcore cobra fans are going to enjoy this one. Pass on this one, see them live and grab Mink,Rabbit or Rat and enjoy!!

Amazon.com's Best of 2000

Heartbreaker opens with an argument about a Morrissey song before the band kicks into the sloppy and rollicking "To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is to Be High)," and certainly the gloomster's self-referential sadness hangs over Ryan Adams's songs. But Adams, the notoriously raucous frontman for the defunct Whiskeytown, is a country boy at heart if not in attitude, so there is a lingering pastoral beauty that imbues the album with a happy sweetness as well. That, along with Ryan's expressive, gravelly voice (equal parts Paul Westerberg and Merle Haggard), gives Heartbreaker enduring power. --Tod Nelson

Amazon.com

With a touch of Robyn Hitchcock in his vocal timbre, a smidgen of Steve Earle in his narratives and instrumental writing, and a heap of Gram Parsons in the fullness of his overall sound and structure, Ryan Adams steps well above Whiskeytown with Heartbreaker, his solo debut. By turns raucous, wistful, raspy, and simply sweet, Adams makes the most of a top-shelf acoustic band, including Gillian Welch and David Rawlings and even a guest spot from Emmylou Harris on the tenderly yearning "Oh My Sweet Caroline." There's little dependence on the usual alt-country twang and a far more rounded sense of textures here (the multiple vocal tracks on "Amy," for example, sound Beatles-esque), with glockenspiel, organ, and more signaling a sonic field of extensive depth. His spare guitar and stretched-thin vocal delivery alternate smartly with a bigger-shouldered guitar and throaty voice, never leaving behind a band conception straight out of Parsons's oeuvre. Adams signals occupancy of the post-alt-country vanguard--if there is such a thing. --Andy Bartlett

Ryan Adams/GillianWelch/David Rawlings.....What more do you want???? i still reach for this CD for OH MY SWEET CAROLINA....i'm a lousy guitar player but that one i can do....in my opinion Ryan Adams is our premier DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH...and should be honored as such....even his crapwork is better than most....mea culpa if i am wrong

5 out of 5 stars A damn near perfect album.......2007-06-12

When I was just discovering Ryan Adams several years ago, a friend bought me this album, claiming it was his best. Not only is it Adams' best, it's one of the most consistent, timeless, ageless albums in the past 25 years.
There's truly not a weak track on it and the pacing is perfect. It never gets too twangy, yet has the down-to-earth, dusty lyrics that define the country genre (ie. "Be My Winding Wheel" and "Oh My Sweet Carolina", where Adams knows exactly where to use Emmilou Harris' haunting voice). "Bartering Lines" channels a young Neil Young and "Come Pick Me Up"'s drunken, almost-too-simple lyrics are made perfectly bittersweet with the catchiest harmonica melody imaginable. "Damn Sam" is a track that longing, scorned boyfriends will listen to on repeat. Rare, relaxed, pop/country/bluegrass sublimity.

3 out of 5 stars Honestly, I Prefer Adams' Later Stuff.......2007-04-24

I guess i'm one of those Ryan Adams' fans that true Ryan Adams' / Whiskeytown fans spit upon, because I was largely unimpressed by this record. I think the alt-country thing is great and all, but after starting strong, this album gets a little tired towards the end and the songs all sorta run together. "AMY" and "To Be Young..." are the highlights in my opinion and are reason enough to buy Heartbreaker used, but if you're like me and loved Rock & Roll / Love Is Hell, then prepare to be disappointed. No smack against Adams, but this one just didn't turn my crank.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Inspired Artist of the 21st Century.......2006-12-18

A diatribe in Spin Magazine sent me to buy my first RA CD which was the oft-maligned "Rock n' Roll". Figured any artist that generated so much controversy - everything from "Ryan Adams is Master of the Universe" to "Ryan Adams is a self-indulgent, derivative, over-prolific jerk that has squandered his talent" was someone I should check out. R&R had that 'certain something' catchy and intriguing enough for me to buy "Love is Hell" (which is utterly stunning) and thus began a Ryan Adams binge that is still in full force. "Heartbreaker" is definitive, yet only one of the thousand moods and musical styles he is capable of. If you are new to Mr. Adams, start here: get in your car and take a long drive with this CD turned up as loud as you can stand it. Listen all the way through once, then listen to it again. Lyrics, phrasing, composition, heart, soul, authenticity. Adams is at least Master of the Universe. Heartbreaker isn't my favorite of his expansive catalog, but "Amy" & "Call Me on Your Way Back Home" make my knees buckle.

1 out of 5 stars When did cry-baby sob music become popular?.......2006-12-14

As if Jeff Tweedy and EMO music weren't bad enough for the music industry. I'd rather have my toes plucked off with bolt cutters than have to listen to this album again.

The prolific veteran continues to cover a lot of musical territory on an album that resonates with the sound of his glory years of the mid-to-late 1970s. On the first two songs, Parker recalls his breakthrough with Dylanesque phrasing on "I Discovered America" before flashing forward to the current state of British pop celebrity on "England's Greatest Clown." There's his trademark sardonicism in the socially-conscious singalongs of "Ambiguous" and "Stick to the Plan," while other highlights include songs of resilience ("Suspension Bridge," "Hard Side of the Rain") and redemption ("Somebody Saved Me"). At almost eight-and-a-half minutes, "The Other Side of the Reservoir" is epic by Parker's standards, as he follows Van Morrison into the mystic. The closing "All Being Well" could pass as a traditional Irish benediction. With arrangements largely built around Parker's acoustic guitar, the predominantly midtempo material doesn't rock as hard as Parker has, but the hooks sink deep into the soul. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars McCartney Sells Millions and ..........2007-07-25

Oh us Parker fans are a loyal bunch. What kills me is I actually do like the new Paul McCartney release, "Memory Almost Full," but listen carefully. The first hit, "Dance Tonight" could have been written by a 6 year old...."Everybody gonna' dance tonight, everybody gonna' feel alright" ... and what absolutely FLOORS me is everyone claims this McCartney release is his best in years! It's great claims ... blah, blah, blah and every other magazine and source available. What frustrates me is Graham Parker puts out another excellent, balanced release with meaningful lyrics and good music to boot and Paul is the hero. On "Struck by Lightning," one of my old mellow favorites, Graham released a song called, "Brand New Book," which had the line, "The words came out, not twist & shout, that's not what a grown man writes about ..." Well, Paul will sell millions of "Memory Almost Full" on the strength of "Dance Tonight" while Graham continues to pump out solid, cohesive cd's. I'm done whining, but Graham will always be a guilty pleasure. This CD rates up there with his best. I'm not bashing Paulie but his new music is basically ..... "Twist & Shout." Rock on Graham!

Neko Case's third solo effort is a moody, atmospheric affair that both satisfies and mystifies. Recorded in Tucson with a stellar band that includes Calexico's Joey Burns and John Convertino, Blacklisted charms you with its haunting, reverb-soaked songs, most of which were written by Case herself. The lyrics are impressionistic and, at times, inscrutable. "Fast train, where do your passengers wait?" she sings in the title song. "What's at the heart of your engine's rage?" While it's not always clear what Case is getting at, the overall mood of the album is one of loss and melancholy. Soaring above it all is Case's remarkable Patsy Cline-meets-Judy Garland voice, which she uses to great effect on the album's two torchy cover songs: Sarah Vaughan's "Look for Me (I'll Be Around)" and Aretha Franklin's "Running Out of Fools." --David Hill

Album Description

Her third CD, is a lush, haunting showcase for her formidable vocal talents, as well as an intensely intimate work that evokes a dark elegance with a hint of twang. Bloodshot Records. 2002.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2007-07-03

I'm usually pretty level-headed about artists and don't lapse into starry-eyed fandom. However, for Neko Case I make an exception.

This, my favourite of her albums is virtually perfect - superb songs, superb playing (Neko always seems to get together a band who sound like they've been playing together forever) and sound, unshowy arrangement and production that get the most out of the songs. A record I listen to time and time again.

4 out of 5 stars a 5 if only.......2007-06-04

i'd have given it a 5 if my favourite song, outro with bees, wasn't so darn short! WHY OH WHY???

but this cd is still terrific!

4 out of 5 stars Neko puts it down........2007-03-21

Neko Case's sultry, reverb laden vocals are the soundtrack to some wonderfully echo driven dreamworld. I am fairly new to Ms. Case's music, but this album certainly delights and draws the listener in.

5 out of 5 stars ... with love and squalor.......2007-03-02

I guess everyone has their favorite Neko Case album. All I can say is that I have gotten endless listening pleasure from Blacklisted, in which Neko draws from a wealth of sources to produce one of the most magical alt country CD's I've heard. Haunting yes, because she seems to evoke the spirit of Patsy Cline as if drawn from a deep dark well, echoing not only her voice but the depth of emotions as well. Even on a song as sentimental as Pretty Girls, Neko seems to find something extra. All the songs ring true, which is a pretty tall order these days.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Album - but no Fox Confessor.......2007-02-12

After purchasing my favorite album this year, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, I needed to hear more Neko Case. I went back to her catalog of albums and decided on Blacklisted. It is an album full of wonderful songs and a few mediocre tunes as well. I couldn't expect a masterpiece like Fox Confessor, but this album is really quite nice to hear. Most notable is Lady Pilot in which Case's voice really offers the best vocal melody on the album. I also really love Neko's lyrics, especially on Deep Red Bells, I Wish I Was the Moon, and Pretty Girls, where she slices out a piece of life told from the perspective of the common person who has gone thru some significant experience. This album is enough to keep me buying more of her older albums and always looking out for more of her new releases.

The Detroit Cobras' third is actually two recordings in one. Their Bloodshot debut combines the full-length Baby with import-only EP Seven Easy Pieces. Of the 20 tracks, only "Hot Dog (Watch Me Eat)," co-written by producer/guitarist Greg Cartwright (Oblivians, the Reigning Sound), is an original, but no matter. (And title aside, it's a great tune.) The Cobras' modus operandi is, instead, to excavate R&B obscurities and make them their own. Songwriters include Isaac Hayes ("Weak Spot"), Allen Toussaint ("Mean Man"), and Willie Dixon ("Insane Asylum"). Aside from their exquisite taste, there's another reason the Cobras are rarely described as a retro/covers act: Vocalist Rachel Nagy, who has the funky spirit of James Brown protegée Lyn Collins and the sultry sound of the Shocking Blue's Mariska Veres, and versatile guitarist Mary Ramirez. (The rest of the line-up is a revolving door of Detroit's finest.) In addition, Baby features Ko Shih (Ko and the Knockouts, the Dirtbombs) on backing vocals. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The Cobras newest record is just what I expected...the same old Detroit Cobras I've always loved. This band does'nt change...but that's fine by me.

"Baby" is a record filled with the same old heavy r&b they've always delivered. And as usual....it's naughty, raunchy, and most importantly fun. What really makes "Baby" special is the "Seven Easy Pieces" EP that makes up the end of the album. To be honest, the EP is better than the record itself.

Pick this up and play it loud loud loud. You won't be dissappointed.

It's an irresistible concept: Wayne "The Train" tearing it up on 14 original juke joint/swing tunes backed by a raw, first-rate band. He's got the assets to make it work: sharp, incisive vocals, fresh numbers, Lloyd Maines as producer, and an awesome recording band featuring the blazing lead guitar of veteran Hancock sideman Eddie Biebel, guest guitarists Paul Skelton and Dave Biller, and non-pedal steel guitarist Eddie Rivers. By avoiding self-conscious imitation (a pitfall that's done in many acts inspired by the past), they often come fetchingly close to capturing the feel of any number of obscure '40s Texas honky-tonk 78s: swinging out on "Tulsa," down and dirty on "Drinkin' Blues" and the Ernest Tubb-inspired "I Don't Care Anymore" and "Goin' Home Blues," and the earthy "Brother Music, Sister Rhythm." Given Hancock's often-stated affinity for Bob Wills-style swing, the sole disappointment is the scarcity of those sorts of songs here. With a group of musicians this dynamic, a few more rip-roaring moments would have been welcome. --Rich Kienzle

When I first heard "Tulsa" on the radio, I didn't know who was singing and I had never heard of Wayne Hancock, but I thought at the time, "This guy, whoever he is, is channeling Hank Williams!" Luckily, I found out who sang that song and immediately went out and bought this album. If you like country swing, you will love this CD!

5 out of 5 stars This here motel livin' is the only life for me..........2007-01-24

Wayne the train...what can I say? Been listenin' to this fella for longer than I can recall now, seeing him live in so many dingy joints than I care to remember. Played pool with him in Birmingham, had Coca-Cola's with him in Atlanta (he's a double a daddy after all), just shot the breeze with him out west. Been there and done that so many times, and he never fails to touch my soul with his lyrics and music and give it all he's got. Few others are like that these days. Remember hanging out with him and Dale Watson once and just wishing my granddaddy was around to have heard them both...

Those who are coming across are either doing so by accident or because they know the scene and Wayne. If the latter is the case, then no words that I half-a*sedly string together can do him justice...you already know. If it's the former case, I still can't do him justice, but you can now at least hear it for yourself.

Start by getting every single thing you can by him. Start with Thunderstorms in my opinion. Then go on to What Daddy Wants...from there, well fella, I really can't pick anything over the other. You just gotta hear it for yourself and then you'll understand.

Can't recommend this cat highly enough...both as a person and through his music.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2007-01-11

Wayne "The Train" is the real deal. I own every Wayne album and I just can't get enough. I've seen Wayne's live show twice and he plays non-stop just about all night. I would highly recommend any of Wayne's albums especially if your ready for some real country music.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Live Show from Wayne's Tulsa Tour.......2007-01-08

I saw a great show at Fishlips in Bakersfield last Wednesday: Wayne "The Train" Hancock. He sang like a modern-day Hank Williams, and had a great band, just Jake on stand up bass, and Johnny on the Telecaster. Wayne just strummed an acoustic guitar, one stroke per beat, but was always right in the pocket, his guitar was holding down the tempo while the electric guitar filled in when he wasn't singing, and the bass just kept the beat going like crazy. It is a testament to the trio's chops that they could inspire someone to dance right from the first song. They had a really crazy rhythm going and it never let up. And there was not even a drummer in the band. The bass player was always pushing the beat, but with perfect placement, and intonation, which ain't that easy on a fretless stand up bass.

Wayne played for about 2 hours, and he let his girlfriend Gina play a few songs while he took a break. I took that opportunity to get Wayne's autograph. When he got back on stage he sang and talked about all the counties where he was incarcerated. Quite a few.

I loved the show, it was a prodigious display of musical virtuosity. If you closed your eyes you could have sworn it was Hank Williams, yet he had his own style, and wasn't just a clone of Hank. He was what Hank would sound like if he were alive and just a little bit older than Hank Williams III, his grandson is right now.

The songs on Tulsa are great, and whether he is live or in the studio, he sounds fantastic. Wayne Hancock refuses to compromise his music, to sweeten it, to make it more commercial, to do anything other than play music he really feels deep down inside, and to make you feel it deep down inside, too.

5 out of 5 stars Montgomery in Oklahoma, by way of Texas.......2006-12-10

This is a fine album. It's Hank I channeled through Bill Haley and Bob Wills. It's a nice assortment of rockabilly swing interspersed with some nifty, jazzy ballads, the highlight of which is "Highway Bound." Perhaps the songs on average aren't quite up to Williams' standards. On the other hand, these musicians have chops the Comets never dreamed of.

Laying waste to all the wink-wink irony, dubious material, and vocal mediocrity that frequently mires alt-country fringe dwellers, the second outing from this Virginia-born belter marries tough, twangy rock with wild, unguarded emotion. Neko's principal charm may be her voice--sometimes coming on with Dusty Springfield's indigo-eyed soul (the dreamlike "Porchlight"), Patsy Cline's aching slow burn (the slinky "No Need to Cry"), and Wanda Jackson's imperious sexuality (the rockabilly "Mood to Burn Bridges")--but her songwriting (she cowrote every tune) is surprisingly consistent and memorable. She celebrates the "passion for life" found in her abandoned home of Tacoma, Washington, or a strapped-on Telecaster, and on her best song, "Guided by Wire," she balances between "darkest recollection" and the freedom of music, the kind that matters most, all those voices "singing my life back to me." --Roy Kasten

4 out of 5 stars Guided by your electric wire's hum.......2006-08-18

Think of this as a relative endorsement - I've become such a fan of Neko Case in the past year that Furnace Room Lullaby, my first purchase of hers, now seems a fairly subpar Case record, something which is less a criticism than simply a high bar to live up to. There's a wealth of extraordinary songs on Furnace Room Lullaby - the cold echoes of the title track, the invigorating vocal heights of "Set Out Running," the haunted eloquence of "South Tacoma Way." What makes Case's songs so distinct is the way her melodies - as conventional as they'd ever be on this record - seem to invade with spare syllables, making each second of their short running time rattle around your head for days. What make's Furnace Room disappointing in light of the entire Case catalog is its lack of conceptual daring, its sidestepping of the passionate cohesion that elecrifies Blacklisted and Fox Confessor Brings The Flood. Certainly, she was just starting out with this record, but it falls short of her biggest accomplishments. Still, few artists can do what Case does - her powerful vocals and invasive lyrics are already in full swing, and on "Porchlight," she makes what may still be her finest and most singable song - a song whose longing is more memorable than its perfect melody.

5 out of 5 stars Neko Case - Furnace Room Lullaby.......2006-07-10

This is the first CD of Neko Case I have bought. I can't believe I have never heard her on the radio. I heard the title song on a DVD movie and had to check her out. She is a very good singer, and her style is unique. If you like country, but want some variety from the mainstream stuff, this is the singer you should look for.

5 out of 5 stars Forget Shania or Faith.............2006-06-28

After I saw Neko on Breakfast with the Arts on A&E,I bought her newest cd,then bought this one.I haven't been disappointed yet and I doubt if I will be.Neko has the most beautiful and passionate voice out there and puts the Shanias and Faiths to shame..These songs should be radio and not the wannabes that make up most of country today...I mean, shouldn't Neko be more popular than the so- called country starlets that are out now?? In a perfect world, she would be...BUY THIS!!!

5 out of 5 stars Country-Pop Perfection.......2006-05-06

The cover features a pic of a comatose Neko sprawled out on the gritty floor, red hair pooled around her, as if the victim of a dirty deed. The back features Neko looking guilty, crouching over the body of a knocked-out guy as she rifles through his wallet. Is it any wonder Nick Cave had her open for him on his 2002 North American tour?

Neko's music shares some similarities with Cave in its heartfelt intensity, haunting dark melodies, and occasional rip-roaring debauchery. They diverge at the line between soulful folk balladeer and soulful country pop, the difference between a Leonard Cohen-esque piano ballad and a twanging electric guitar. Neko's "Whip the Blankets" and "Mood to Burn Bridges" are countrified rockabilly rip-stompers. When she snaps "my mood to burn bridges is like my mood to dig ditches," you know you'd better not cross her for fear of ending up in one of those ditches. "South Tacoma Way" is a deeply heartfelt lament for a dead friend or partner that sounds too authentic not to be autobiographical. "Bought and Sold" is a loving but wry look at Neko's hometown of Tacoma, Washington, which has steadfastly resisted development and big-box stores for years. "God bless California, make way for the Wal-Mart," Neko sings, "I hope they don't find you, Tacoma."

Then there's her voice. With Loretta Lynn twang, Patsy Cline throb, and Dusty Springfield soul, Neko has a voice big enough to fill a canyon. The album opener, "Set Out Running," is the most soulful country song about trying to outrun heartbreak that I've ever heard. When Neko belts out, "The springs inside the mattress will cry my dirty secrets; I just can't shake this feeling that I'm nothing in your eyes," it stops my heart every time. The gorgeous, haunting title track, "Furnace Room Lullaby," was featured on the soundtrack to the movie The Gift, with Cate Blanchett playing a spirit medium in the deep south, outwitting abusive boyfriends and vengeful ghosts. Neko's atmospheric song was a perfect choice. The lovely, weepy "Porchlight" is another cry-in-your-wineglass classic ("sorry to tread on your patience, my dear; my heart might be willing by this time next year; I can't make you wait `cause I long to be forgiven"). "No Need to Cry" harks back to Patsy Cline's romantic countrypolitan leanings of the late `50s/early `60s, and it's great to sing along with in the car.

With her classic song structures and big voice, it's no surprise that Neko wrote a song about her influences. "Guided By Wire" tells of salvation through the radio, of the voices of songwriters and performers, new and old, who have influenced and guided Neko through her life and career. "Even in my darkest recollection," she sings, "there was someone singing my life back to me." Neko has been there for me in the very same way on many a road trip, hectic work commute, trip to the corner grocery.... Pop this CD in your car stereo and take Neko along for the ride. She'll provide some much-needed comfort on those hairpin turns, lonely roads to nowhere, and any time you need some soulful countrified pop to give more meaning to your day.

The songs on this album are just as good as those on Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. And, I love Lucinda, but Neko can really sing.

4 out of 5 stars Same old song, different set of stiletto heels.......2007-07-09

In a pre-Donnas world, garage-gal retro-rock would reference '60s groups such as the Standells and Troggs, along with a liberal dose of roughened-up girl-group riffs... Nowadays, though, the touchpoints are more likely to be '70s-style hard rock and power-pop backbeats -- Cheap Trick, Montrose, maybe even a little Foghat or Sweet. And of course, we can't forget foremothers such as the Schoolgirls, Runaways and Suzi Quatro. These gals cover a lot of familiar territory, with plenty of jailbait-y pouting and lyrical snarls, but they do hit some solid grooves, and do dip back into the fuzz-drenched 'Sixties grab-bag for a tune or two. They're not saying anything new, but sweaty-fisted fans of the style will probably dig it... especially if they crank it up loud. (DJ Joe Sixpack)

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Ripe with the enigmas of loss, love, and connections across great distances, Alejandro Escovedo's sixth solo album realizes the promise of his remarkable gifts as singer, songwriter, and arranger. On spiraling tiers of pedal steel, cellos, violins, and electric and acoustic guitars, his chamber-rock vision comes to full fruition. He's never made freer garage pop than "Castanets," never stirred a more sweeping lyricism than in "Don't Need You," and never laid bare more soul than in the heartbreaking "Follow You Down" (a ballad Escovedo often dedicates to Townes Van Zandt). Even more amazing are the pairing of "Wave" and "Rosalie," subtle dramas of the Mexican-American passage through separation and faith, and the swirling, aching "About This Love," which concludes "It's all about the way/We break, to love again." Escovedo has always sought a poetic fusing of sound and image; with A Man Under the Influence, that search is complete. --Roy Kasten

Album Description

Produced by Chris Stamey (former dB's) and performed by many of Alejandro's band of usual suspects, it also features the contributions of Eric Heywood (Richard Buckner, Freakwater),Mitch Easter, members of Superchunk, Ryan Adams, Chip Robinson (The Backsliders), Caitlin Cary (Whiskeytown) and more. 5 out of 5 stars Alejandro has ME under the influence!.......2005-10-23

One of the finest song writers going on anywhere. He writes from his heart about personal things that we can all relate to. I love this guy. I have for years. Since Rank and File on down the line. His songs breaks and mends hearts. Alejandro, i will quit my day job and be your roadie!

5 out of 5 stars Unique and Wonderful.......2005-09-27

Alejandro Escovedo is a Mexican-American guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter and his music is incredibly difficult to categorize. At times he ranges across country and rock landscapes performing ballads, love songs, haunting melodic studies, and scorching rock and roll. There are moments when his songs are reminiscent of the Eagles in the way they are arranged and in the lyrical structures, yet his is a solo voice that is compelling without the support of harmony. I bought the CD on the strength of songs like "Velvet Guitar" and "Castanets" which were getting a lot of radio airplay in Austin. Over time, I have come to love the rest of this album even more than those two tracks. Alejandro is a fine singer and a very good guitarist, but the strength of this album is his songwriting and arranging. This is one of those recordings that true music fans will appreciate more after a dozen or so playings than they do at first. The music is complex and multi-layered, despite the simplicity of the single voice and guitar that are featured on most tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Estas canciones son para ti..........2004-03-17

"These songs are for you..." Alejandro Escovedo closes out his dedication to his sister Alice, in 'A Man Under the Influence', and truth be told, these songs feel as if they are written for and sung to each and everyone of us individually.

Alejandro Escovedo is one songwriter and musician that I was fortunate to run into not too long ago, one who magically manages to seamlessly blend influences from folk, rock & roll, punk, country and texmex music. After learning about him, this album, with all its "dia de los muertos" motif instantly captured my attention: gladly I later found out most of his fans consider it to be his best production to date. To me the 11-song was like a book consisting of two intertwined chapters, somewhat (and two very solid chapters, for the matter). From the opening chord of "Wave", into the contagious "Rosalie", the first chapter is mostly straight-up rock 'n roll with songs that equally borrow from The Beatles in their early years or Los Lobos, while still retaining a uniqueness that makes them refreshing, making you want to listen to them over and over again.

The other chapter of the album shows a far more personal side of Escovedo, with "Across The River", "Velvet Guitar" (a very Tom Petty-like tune), the intimate "Don't Need You" and the closing "About This Love" making you wonder: what on earth are we listening to these days, when a guy like Alejandro Escovedo is far from being well known? (to the point on depending on his friend's and fan's help to get back on his feet after collapsing in April 2003 -you can also help him by going to http://www.alejandrofund.com/)

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD.......2003-08-14

This CD was a CD of the month at my local Public Radio station (KUNI), and Alejandro was featured on "The World Cafe". Because I had heard a few of the songs on the CD...I was both reluctant and hopeful when I bought the CD. I should not have been reluctant. The CD was enough for me to travel to Minneapolis to see Alejandro in concert. A Man Under the Influence is both masterful and approachable. Masterful enough for my father to enjoy it and approachable enough that my stepson requested that I burn Castanets onto a CD for him.

What Neko Case lacks in polish and subtlety, she more than makes up for with urgency, authority, and plain, old spunk. Her irresistible originals blend twangy hooks, direct lyrics, and an implied, rather than explicit edge. Stark, brooding weepers such as "Jettison" and "Lonely Old Lies" accompany the perky country-pop of "High on Cruel" and the mysterious anti- gospel of the title track. She adds these originals to covers that range from the Everly Brothers, Ernest Tubb, and Loretta Lynn to Scott Walker and Queen. All the while, steel guitars and mandolins softly accent the proceedings. Much of what's dubbed alternative country is simply alt-rock with country instruments or country music played at high decibels. Case & Her Boyfriends actually create a true fusion of styles. --Marc Greilsamer

Album Description

Neko Case's solo debut is a delightful collection of heartfelt originals and vibrant covers ranging from traditional country fare (Ernest Tubb's "Thanks a Lot," Loretta Lynn's "Somebody Led Me Away") to more eclectic material (Scott Walker's "Duchess"). The highlight is a rip-snorting rendition of the Everly Brothers' "Bowling Green," a duet with Zumpano's Carl Newman. Bloodshot Records. 1998.

5 out of 5 stars Another Solid Effort.......2007-06-12

What can I say? I'm just amazed at how consistent her CDs are, and how often they end up in the player. Before a second cut is finished playing, I've plugged in a Tele and I'm playing along. Pick anything from her catalog and you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars THE WHISKEY DID THE REST.......2006-12-13

Okay...I just can't do it. I thought I could write this review without referencing her but I can't. So, let's get it out of the way. She's no Patsy Cline. No one ever will be, but with Neko it's hard not to conjure up thoughts of a 21st Century Patsy. In Patsy's wake we've been blessed to hear some sublime voices that would not have been possible had Miss Cline not kicked open the door for them. Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris, Maria McKee...and now Neko Case. All unique. All powerful. All capable of devastating, raw emotional impact & rousing roof-raising joy. All due respect to Patsy.

Now once we get beyond unfair comparisons, Neko becomes her own strange, beautiful animal. THE VIRGINIAN is one of the most exhilarating mission statements I've ever heard. It's rewards are rich and many.

She starts off the album with "Timber". Is it a warning? Maybe. She makes the Everly Brothers her bitch on "Bowling Green". "Jettison" is as sparkling, and emancipated as a song about suicide can be. The next two songs are so ferocious & rollicking that Metallica might want to start taking notes. "High On Cruel" is aptly titled and once you hear her immaculate, seductive vocals I defy you to not wish to be the lover under her stilletos. "Karoline" rocks even harder. The band ratcheting up the tension until the live-wire snaps on Matt Murphy's brilliant "Honky Tonk Hiccups". On which Neko outdoes herself in terms of phrasing. That is until you reach a poignant, crushing rendition of "Duchess". She gives Earl Scruggs a loving pat on the back with "Thanks A Lot"...she is led away from a bloody idiot in the next song...and finally confounds expectations with a Queen song to close out the album.

It's a wildly fun ride. You'll take it over and over again. Neko Case is one of those rare artistic gifts. Her every move will be a pleasure to witness.

If you need convincing...start with this album. You can thank me later.

4 out of 5 stars Over analyzing it.......2006-05-12

Don't listen to these people comparing this to the album they bought last week. This was a good album when it came out and it is still a good album. Let them keep repeating this country-noir nonsense because they heard some reviewer say it. These reviews are full of repeated nonsense that people read in Spin or Rolling Stone.

5 out of 5 stars Nuevo Honky Tonk.......2006-01-06

Quite possibly the best album every made. I write this 'review' in response (or retort, rather) to the opening line of the amazon.com official review, which starts with, "what Neko lacks..." - HORRIBLE! Allow me to retort. Miss Neko lacks nothing (except a husband last I checked and she can call me if she is reading this). Simply the greatest nuevo honky tonk voice on the planet. This debut album (yeah, it's still called an 'album' even if you buy it on CD) is and always will be, in my humble opinion, a classic slab of the meanest, most sincere and well played music you will find. Words lack the power to convey my love of this women's (WOMEN, not little girl with a record contract) voice. I prefer this freshmen release on Mint Records (the equally talentuous Carolyn Mark's homebase) over later albums precisely for the ubertwang feel. I will not give you a song by song kitchy Rolling Stone styled review, I don't do that and I don't like people that do. Listen to the entire album, that is what records like this were made for. I love the mando and peddlesteel playing, and the album is recorded in an anachronistic, open and airy style - NOT like cheap imitation, polished records which don't hold a candle. I could go on - just get it and listen repeatedly.

4 out of 5 stars Not a great album, but some great performances.......2004-12-01

Those who are into Neko for her "country noir" music will probably be disappointed by her debut album, "The Virginian." Released a good seven years ago, it's pretty straightforward country/rockabilly--and for that reason I find myself playing it a lot more than "Blacklisted." No, it's not the best album ever, but "Bowling Green" surpasses the Everlys' version, "Misfire" is an inspired Queen cover, and "Honky Tonk Hiccups" is a great little original. Well worth picking up if you liked the more uptempo stuff on "The Tigers Have Spoken."
