Editorial Reviews

Stephen Pedersen, The Sunday Herald, Excerpts from the Review Corner - November 21, 1999
The Sunday Herald Excerpts from the REVIEW CORNER - November 21, 1999 by Stephen Pedersen Joel Zemel and Georges Hebert's new company, SVP gives five Nova Scotia musicians the chance to be heard in the most intimate and revealing of musical circunstances - no band, no back-up, just themselves and the instrument they play, and usually no more than one or two takes. The Artists In Residence on this interesting Cd are Lisa MacDougall, Dave Carmichael, Terry Kelly, Ken Enman and Paul Martell. The solo format highlights their musical personalities vividly, and while there are no new revelations here, there are some facinating results.

Lisa MacDougall's performance of three songs, one written by herself and the other two in collaboration with George Antoniak, are solid gold, or rather, solid blue. She really knows how to howl the blues. Her voice is rich and smoky, and her groove solid. How much is Antoniak and how much is MacDougall ceases to matter when Lisa opens [up and] sings. She makes the songs her own so convincingly she could be making it up on the spot out of the heat of the emotion itself. Terry Kelly's three contributions show us nothing new but do reveal the maturity of his voice and style. His songwriting leans to the sentimental in Jeffrey's Song (his young son pleads with him to stay home and not go on the road) and his anthem of hope and optimism, We Can Do Anything.

Guitarist Paul Martell in [three] original compositions and colleague Ken Enman [also] in three show the intimacy of their fine, solo acoustic guitar playing. Martell's Still Life With Cats is a simple, gracious straightforward little tune surrounded with its arpeggios. Enman's A Little Knight Music, Smooth Sailing and The Saddest of Goodbyes illustrates the clarity and simplicity of his melodic gift, coupled with a warm, clean sound and an imagination which finds a different gesture and musical imagery for each piece. Dave Carmichael on Let's Go To Bed, Sinking and I'll Write all circle around the same obsession. In a thin, anguished voice, he sings of artistic lonliness, of difficult decisions to follow his own way "until I find a reason to believe in."

These are very personal protest songs which reveal an intense struggle to discover, to be heard, to be free, and not to be judged. Apart from the particular songs, [these], in general, are all moving expressions of artistic guilt. [An] interesting, absorbing album.

Product Description
A renewed concept in adult/contemporary performance. Unplugged to the extreme. Five talented musicians contribute three original tunes to this project. No overdubs; just the solo artist and an instrument. From folk/rock to jazz/blues and everything in between, this CD allows the listener to experience music at its essence - as close to a one-on-one performance as possible. All of the artists involved have separate recording careers and CDs of their own. Some of the material on this may be on other recordings but these versions are one of a kind. Meant for the music lover who prefers a personal touch to his or her listening experience.
