Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2004-02-20

Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11

After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16

When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13

This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.

I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.

So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!

1 out of 5 stars ... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

5 out of 5 stars This song drives me crazy! (In a GOOD way).......2002-10-28

"(You Drive Me) Crazy" is Britney Spears's third single off her first album, '...Baby One More Time'. The "Stop Remix" is definitely the best version of the song, no doubt about it. Here are the track listings:

1.) "(You Drive Me) Crazy" [the "Stop Remix"] ~ one of Britney's best songs ever. The video, which unfortunately is not included on this CD single, is really good too. Still the best Britney song yet! 5/5 stars

2.) "(You Drive Me) Crazy" [Instrumental version] ~ in case you would rather hear yourself sing the song, here is the perfect way to do it. It's good, but the song sounds a lot better with Britney singing. 3/5 stars

3.) "I'll Never Stop Loving You" ~ a nice track from her import album. International song that was not previously released in the United States. 4/5 stars

If you love this song, then you must get this CD single. The only other place you can find the "Stop Remix" version of "(You Drive Me) Crazy" is from the Melissa Joan Hart's film soundtrack, 'Drive Me Crazy'.

I highly recommend the "(You Drive Me) Crazy" CD single.

1 out of 5 stars You Drive Me Crazy? Honey, we already knew that.......2001-12-18

Britney Spears has got to be one of the worst "music" artists on the planet. She has no vocal talent, she can't dance, and her taste in clothing is horrific! I know that sounds quite shallow, but if that's all she cares about . . . well, there's another problem right there. P.S. Stop saying "I want to be a role model" and then dance around in a thong.

      5 out of 5 stars Crazy.......2001-09-17

it is one of the best cd's i've ever heard in my whole, entire life! It is the best song ever sang by the pop princess!

      5 out of 5 stars Britney's best song ever........2001-07-30

I'm a female fan of Britney Spears, so I like her music and not her looks. I think "(You Drive Me) Crazy" is her best song ever, especially the 'STOP' remix - I think that rocks! I love it when she says, "...Stop!" in the song. By the way, this is one of the only ways you can get the 'STOP' remix for the song. There is a different, slower version on her album. Anyways, even though this is an Import so it costs extra, it's still worth it. There is also an instrumental version for those who would rather sing the song themselves then hear Britney sing (he! he!). And then there's an extra track on this single called "I'll Never Stop Loving You". I don't think it was released in the United States, but it's very good. If you like Britney Spears, then this is a must have. Much better than the album version of "(You Drive Me) Crazy"!

5 out of 5 stars (You Drive Me) Crazy (the Stop Remix) Cd Single (Import).......2000-08-24

Her Best Single! I own this CD and I Though I would Give you a litte info. on it.

1.(You Drive Me) Crazy (The Stop Remix)- this is the video remix of the song and can only been found here and on the Drive Me Crazy album and isnt as good as the single. AWESOME SONG!

      2. (You Drive Me) Crazy (The Stop Remix) (Instrumental)- this is a kareoke version of the chart topping single and has all the beat with out the words.

      3. I'll Never Stop Loving You (non-album track)- this is a never in the U.S. released song that she has re-done from an 80's version.

        Album Description

“Broadway: Love & Laughter” is terrific. Singer/actress Eileen Mager performs twenty-three of the greatest songs from Broadway musicals in a way you won't soon forget. There are some real oldies, as well as more current songs, and everything from tear-jerkers to laugh riots. They have great lyrics (and you'll understand all the words) and great tunes. She'll have you laughing and crying and having a ball. Ellen Brown's accompaniments offer just the right touch -- for example, “Little Girl Blue” has a great blues sound to it. This is a CD not to be missed, and perfect gift for friends and family.

Broadway musicals have always been about love in its infinite forms. This has resulted in a huge crop of wonderful love songs — joyous, sad, flirtatious, angry, passionate, mischievous, touching. They range from the deeply serious to the out and-out hilarious, as, come to think of it, does love itself.

So in this recording, West Side Story's Maria proclaims her joy in “I Feel Pretty” and South Pacific's Nellie Forbush displays similar feelings in “A Wonderful Guy.”

We also have Guys & Dolls's Adelaide singing “Adelaide's Lament” about the cold she's developed because of the frustration of a 14-year engagement to Nathan Detroit that seems destined never to result in a wedding.

Pal Joey's Vera, a sophisticated “older” woman, who knows Joey isn't worth it, sings about finding herself nonetheless “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered.”

Of course, Kate of Kiss Me, Kate, in no uncertain terms, announces “I Hate Men,” while Oklahoma's irrepressible Ado Annie sings “I Cain't Say No.”

On the Town's lady taxi driver, Hildy, tries to convince us of her total desirability with the madcap seduction of “I Can Cook, Too,” while Sally of Follies sings of her total immersion in her love in one of Broadway's most touching love songs, “Losing My Mind.”

Britney Spears has, I think, 6 singles. I have 5 of them. This is one of them, and just about my favorite. The album version of Crazy was good enough to get it played on the radio seemingly coninuously (except for when ...Baby One more Time was on, of course) and for all of us to learn the lyrics. Then came it's remix. And it's about as remixed as you get. But looking past the fact the versions could be mistaken for different artists, the song is danceable, hip, and worth the effort of re-learning the lyrics. I think my friends went to it's namesake motion picture just to hear the song. With it's infamous "Stop" and the factory-like percussion, this song's an instant hit. Plus, the instrumental version is great for karaoke.

              Album Description

Debut CD from Texas shredder Doug Stapp. "Static" is a great debut and Doug knows how to combine solid melodies, heavy riffs, fast licks and lots of squeals in order to shape a good song! Also features a very bizarre take on the Britney Spears hit "(You Drive Me) Crazy".

1 out of 5 stars Doug Stapp "STATIC".......2003-04-02

Well,we've all seen it, heard it before, what's so amazing about this new guitarist that would make him stand apart from the pack? I have to think....I don't know
Yeah he has great chops, he plays with taste but it all sounds very very generic, and his guitar sounds is so lackluster...

Don't get me wrong I like shred guitar playing, but something has to grab your attention, simply because it has been done a thousand times!
He's a good but then again, nothing outstanding!
the free songs I just listened to sound like a lower class Satriani, the production is very poor too.
everyone can make better recording in a home studio.
I don't want to dis the guy, I'm sure he's a good guy and he sure knows how to play. But please don't put him on the New Guitar hero pedestal! these songs don't even sound half as good as say Ritchie Kotzen's or Blues Saraceno to name a few.

5 out of 5 stars Full Throttle Guitar Work.......2003-03-07

Do you like?:Joe Satriani,Eddie Van Halen,Paul Gilbert etc etc. If you do, I will have you know this guy graduated from each of those fine schools to blaze his own trail, and develop a style that is so crisp, so clean, but has a punch that will break your ribs. He plays with some speed at times but its well done and not over the top like Yngwie Malmsteen. Yngwie just annoys me,Doug has style that crosses boundries, I dont think you can pigeon hole his style. If your a musician I think you will really apperciate the work he put into the CD. What a Hot Rod! My favorites were: Drop, Static & Break Out. All are a pleasure to listen to.
