Customer Reviews:
Great album...but get Razor & Tie instead.......2007-03-13
If you are a fan of these great early Partridge Family albums, then you owe it to yourself to buy the 1993 Razor & Tie versions instead. Why? Razor & Tie did not tamper with the sound quality, as a result, Razor & Tie discs sound just like the records you remember. I made the mistake of buying the re-masters thinking they would sound even greater; NOT!
I've heard both versions using top of the line monitor speakers, and these Buddha discs have too much bass added for their own good. They also sound flat, because too much noise reduction was used, thus taking away the sparkle which sounded so good on the Razor & Tie versions. You can still find these Partridge Family albums on Razor & Tie right here on Amazon.
The Partridge Family albums on Razor & Tie were the debut album, Up To Date, Sound Magazine, Shopping Bag and The Christmas album.
Can't believe I like this music.......2006-12-20
When I was a very little kid, I used to hold a cassette recorder with a crappy microphone up to the TV to tape the newest Partridge Family songs before they were officially released. Then, when the albums came out, I'd marvel at how the versions on the album could be different than the version on TV (the extra synthesizer on "I'll Leave Myself a Little Time", for example).
I knew I would like this CD from a purely nostalgic perspective, but what surprises me is how well these songs hold up in terms of their craftsmanship. This CD and Sound Magazine are two of the most solidly crafted discs of bubblegum pop from the 70's, and far superior to anything else made at the time (unless you count the Jackson 5 as part of this genre, which I don't).
From listening to Sound Magazine, it's obvious that David Cassidy's vocals are pitch-shifted on this disc, but this album is still a fun listen, regardless of the studio tricks used or how few of the "Partridges" actually performed on the disc.
A Unique Voice And Wonderful Talent..........2006-05-10
This Albulm is wonderful and no one sang these songs better than David Cassidy...Its no wonder he became the huge star he did.
He has the ability to sing these beautiful songs of the early 70s in a unique and sincere way that is rarely captured by artists...the combination of the genius song writers the best of this era and his unique voice make David Cassidy a stand out talent....I get shivers and goose bumps listening to these songs which are musical masterpiece from an era that was for the music of David Cassidy and wonderful song writers.
It was the perfect recipe and is wonderful feel good music from an era that I doubt will ever be seen again.
I have all the albulms and all have something special and Davids voice is quite special.
Enjoy this great albulm and the music and see for yourself the quality of the music the words and singer David Cassidy that made him the Superstar...
A winner !!!
It takes me back.......2006-02-17
I loved listening to these songs that I hadn't heard in years. The quality is so great and the music is even better than I remember. It's so nice to have it on CD. David Cassidy ... I fell in love with him all over again!
Touché on "That'll Be the Day".......2005-08-12
Glad to see someone else realize that "That'll Be the Day" is NOT by Buddy Holly. Some very easy to listen to pop songs, love Shirley Jones backup vocals in "She'd Rather Have the Rain"

Great album and beautiful mastering from Razor & Tie .......2007-03-14
If you are a fan of those great early Partridge Family albums, then you owe it to yourself to get these, the 1993 Razor & Tie versions and not the recent re-masters of 2000 and 2003. Why? Razor & Tie did not tamper with the sound quality, as a result, Razor & Tie CD's sound like the records you remember. I made the mistake of buying the re-masters thinking they would sound even greater; NOT!
Partridge Classics.......2000-01-27
If I may quote from a Partridge Family episode I still remember from when it first aired:
Keith had become infatuated with a classical composer who criticized the Partridges tunes as "so simplistic!" In the final moments of the episode, as the family plays one of their boppier numbers, the composer's teacher and mentor breaks it down for her; "My dear, nothing needs more justification than making people happy."
This music is sweet.

BEST OVERALL PARTRIDGE CD.......1999-12-09
I admit, with no shame, of my undying love of the commercial pop sound engendered by the Partridge Family, a conglomeration of front singer/teen idol David Cassidy and a team of exceptional musicians and singers, including the talented Bahler brothers. UP TO DATE is, I think, the best of the albums produced of the Partridge Family sound. It once again features a number of delectable pop songs, impeccably arranged, and inspires a sense of nostalgia and fun with every listen. My personal faves: SHE'D RATHER HAVE THE RAIN, with its cascading, infectious melody, and YOU ARE ALWAYS ON MY MIND, which I think could have been a bigger follow-up to I THINK I LOVE YOU as a massively popular hit single than DOESN'T SOMEBODY WANT..., which is fun in its own right, but lacks the punch and dazzle of MIND. Let the good times in!
Anti-venom for the Soul.......1999-11-27
A review as toxic and venomous as the one clipped below deserves a well measured dose of anti-toxin - and quickly.
Receive your injection by reading my review of the Partridge Family on the "Sound Magazine" page.
My rating for "Up To Date" is noted above.
Best regards. /fwa
>The lyrics are trite and sappy. The music bland and generic. The production is utterly unoriginal and soulless. This is teeny bopper product at its worst, and that there are still people who want to hear here is a sad commentary on how crass, cynical, and thoroughly manipulative marketing still pays off.

Joyful Memories with lovely melodies and timeless.......1999-11-21
I was 13 years old when the partridge family show appeared on the network. I of course was naive and full of dreams, and the memories of the times through these songs really make me happy again. Over the years I never forgot the songs or lyrics. I am just so happy that the songs are back and on CD. I only wish that the other albums would be added to make my nostalgia complete. I am happy that David Cassidy has embraced his past again, and hopefully more fondly.

Dad may spend too much time surfing the Web, swipe the remote, and snore, but when he straps on the Stratocaster, jump back--if he's Daddy a Go Go's John Boydston, that is. Together with Walt Brewer, a dad who drums, Boydston tears it up a third time on Big Rock Rooster, an album of '60s-esque jangly pop-rock that recalls everybody from Brian Wilson to John Fogerty to the Revolver-era Beatles. The paternal pair has matured a bit this go round--Rooster aims to rouse the 5- to 10-year-old crowd with tunes like "I Caught My Daddy Watching Cartoons" and the camp classic "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah." Consider it a graduation gift for kids who wore out their copies of Monkey in the Middle. Tucked into the originals, with their loopy, lifted-from-the-living-room lyrics, are parent-pleasers like the Partridge Family theme and the '50s bopper "Rag Mop." The straight-up sound is the thing, though. With surf licks, rockabilly riffs, and New Orleans grooves mixed into their musical stew, the Daddys continue to cook up some of the most energetic, accessible kids' music around. --Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
Daddy a Go Go's "Big Rock Rooster" isn't for toddlers. It's not bad for them or anything, but if your child is 14.5 months old, like the child of the writer below, by all means check out The Wiggles and Barney or even Daddy a Go Go's first CD "Cool Songs for Cool Kids" which was named one of Amazon.com's Top 10 Best Kids CD of 1999.
"Big Rock Rooster" is for older kids, from 3 or 4 on up to 10, who are getting older and hip to rock and roll riffs you might hear on commercials or even classic rock radio stations. They like that stuff cause its fun, but maybe you don't want your kids listening to mainstream radio or watching TV all day just yet. "Big Rock Rooster" is a fun rock record with 12 original songs straight out of real life, like "I Can't Find My Shoes" or fun word-play songs like "Guitars on Mars" or "I Wanna Be an Action Figure."
Martin Keller wrote a great little review of this CD in the Minneapolis Star Tribune: "You gotta love the brains and instruments behind Daddy a Go Go -- John Boydston, a former CNN producer and current stay-at-home dad who came of age in rock's golden era and is now trying to re-create it for kids. He does it with his original songs, groaner pop culture puns, smart covers and ripping guitar lines. Playing everything but drums, Boydston shows he's as much in touch with his and your kids as he is with patented '60s guitar hooks. This CD is a righteous follow-up to his first two discs. Daddy a Go Go proves again that he's one of kids-music's rockin'-est rulers."
And Tower Records' PULSE gave "Big Rock Rooster" a 4 star review: "Big Rock Rooster rips! Daddy A Go Go a.k.a. John Boydston, isn't afraid to rock out (and I mean really rock out in a grungy, garage band sort of way) and he does so with such spirit and good graces that he offends the sedate sensitibilies of neither parent nor child. (Think nuances of the Beatles and the Who toned down to meet the needs of today's busy nuclear family.) Daddy A Go Go's brand of rock 'n' roll is simple and nostalgic with smart retakes (unlike the original, Daddy A Go Go's version of the Partridge Family's "Come On, Get Happy" manages to avoid sounding sappy) mingled with originals."
Customer Reviews:
A disappointment: falls short of previous two efforts.......2004-11-30
If you are looking for guitar-driven, garage band style children's music then, then Daddy a Go Go just might fit the bill. Parents who are fans of the Beatles, surf guitar, the Byrds; or, even REM, Camper van Beethoven, Flaming Lips, the Misfits, etc., will likely find Daddy a Go Go a refreshing change from Barney, the Wiggles, Raffi, and other commercially popular children's artists. However, if you're new to Daddy a Go Go, I'd recommend buying either of their first two albums, *Cool Songs For Cool Kids* or *Monkey In The Middle*, instead of *Big Rock Rooster*.
*Big Rock Rooster* was somewhat of a disappointment. After listening to the song samples, I decided to borrow the CD from the library before buying it. We listened to the album at least once a day for about 3-4 weeks, in rotation with the previous two Daddy a Go Go CDs. I really tried to like the album, and--although we love Ralph's World--initially took with a grain of salt any negative comparisons to Ralph's World.
My now 14.5 month-old son, husband, and I enjoy the first two albums very much, especially the instrumentals and cover tunes. The only exception is the Pokemon themed song, "The Fever," which already seems dated after 4 years--and therein lies the weakness of this third Daddy a Go Go album.
To mangle David St. Hubbins' quote in *This is Spinal Tap*: "It's a fine line between clever and corny." Original and creative songs like "Monkey in the Middle" and "You're Not the Bossa Nova Me" (from the second album) are noticeably absent on *Big Rock Rooster*. Instead, you have songs like "I Caught My Daddy Watching Cartoons" and "Nice Mare on Elm Street," which are loaded with youth pop culture references.
Granted, as indicated on the back cover, this album is geared towards an older age group (ages 5-10) than the previous two Daddy a Go Go CDs. However, I think it's possible to write songs for children without resorting to gimmickry. Herewith lies Ralph's World and Brady Rymer's advantage (better studio production and musicianship aside): their songs are witty, performed in various musical styles, and near-timeless. Although Daddy a Go Go does cover some themes or topics in their songs that are universal to children (e.g., "It's Hard to Be a Kid," "Brush Your Teeth," I Can't Find My Shoes"), the surf/garage guitar twang and limited vocal range can seem tedious after repeated listenings; and, the more gimmicky lyrics will unlikely hold up to the passage of time.
Nonetheless, Daddy a Go Go's home studio recorded albums can still have a place in your family's music collection; you just may eventually find yourself reaching for them less often, compared to other, more accomlished children's artists.
A MUST HAVE FOR FUN DADDY-KID TIME.......2004-04-24
This CD is a must have. The lyrics are funny and enjoyable and the music is fun for grown ups to groove too. It is recommended for 5-10 year olds but my 8 month old loves to dance around to it and of course fly around to "I want to be an action figure."
Don't miss this CD. It is a fresh sound to keep the kids having fun and the parents sane with some good old rock.
I can't wait for the new one.
Rockin Kids Music.......2004-04-23
What a great cd for kids! The entire collection is a must have. My 3 year old loves them all! He was recently interviewed and when asked what his favorite song was he responded with an excited "Superheroes" - his name for "I Wanna Be An Action Figure". He also insisted on ordering all the cds for a friend's birthday gift and wow what a hit!
Disappointed -- mediocre vocals and (too) jangly guitar.......2004-04-20
I really wanted to love this CD, especially after all the positive reviews for Daddy a Go Go, including comparisons to the Beatles Revolver era.
Yikes. Not so.
If you can tolerate mediocre singing, a non-stop jangly guitar, C-level back-up musicians, and not-so-clever lyrics, you might be OK with this CD. It does have a bit of a country sound to it -- maybe country music fans will like it more than I do.
I was especially looking forward to "Come on Get Happy" (cover of Partidge Family), but Daddy a Go Go's version is almost unrecognizable as the same song.
I'm just really disappointed with it. I'm taking it to work with me today and offering it to anyone who wants it for free.
I'm going to stick with Ralph's World.
Happy Music.......2002-04-09
This CD is wonderful! The Big Rock Rooster piece is so fun it should go on forever. Rag Mop is better than the original. Don't miss this CD, if you have children or not.

As good as light music gets.......2004-11-09
Among the several 'classics up to dates' by James Last I listend to, this is undoutably the best.
Peace, Peace, Peace...........1999-04-21
I have many CDs of the series and this is one of my favorite. I think this is very next to the volume 5 in its beauty and depth. Just beautiful and peaceful. I was mesmerised by the Spring Song(Mendelssohn), which was uniquely arranged by Last's own way. He is genious!! I highly recommend to start collecting this series with this album or volume 5.
Best in this series!!!!.......1999-01-27
In this album, the listener is in for a special treat, 11 of the best classical interpretations done by James Last. This 1977 release contains two tracks from the opera "Madame Butterfly", which are simply the finest versions of these familiar pieces I have ever heard. The Chopin piece is wonderful. There are a wide variety of different tempos evidenced in this recording. In this recording, the casual James Last fan may find himself/herself forever "hooked on" the beauty of his music. Hansi's trademark strings never sounded better!

Beginner level in the series.......2004-11-09
I first got NO.4 in the series and liked the album a lot. Then I got this first one which turned out to be a dissapointment. The style is different and vocals are used in many of the songs in this album. But it is simply not as enjoyable as 4. I suspect the music gets better as the series goes.

The Real Thing.......2002-04-24
What happens to the midwestern, rust-belt losers from the Replacements' songs when they grow-up? Well, some of them manage to escape their factory town and form country bands. Thank God for Gram Parsons and Uncle Tupelo, and screw Nashville. Real country is white soul music, and Evangeline is proof of that.
Check it out.
it's more than y'alternative, it's damn good.......2002-04-10
let's get this straight, i've been writing and performing songs long enough to become the bitter and cynical bastard that i am. my rule of thumb for other bands is "First of all they[stink], and secondly i've never heard them", it seems to work for me. so i'm as shocked as anyone when i come across a record (debut at that) that i REALLY LIKE. the first thing i listen for from a record is a good song and this damn thing is chock-full. the main songwriter, Chris Cline, has the insightfulness and turn of phrase that Paul Westerberg has at his best. the band has the strength of good musicians that know that the most important thing is to play for the song. the songs are presented by both Cline and Jennifer Potter (who gets inside of Cline's songs and sings them as if she has lived them). hers is a pretty voice, along the lines of Rosanne Cash's, while his has the ragged appeal of a Jeff Tweedy. it's more than y'alternative, it's damn good.
Every song is a gem!.......2001-11-10
I simply cannot get tired of listening to this album. My wife and I have turned on many of our friends to this cd (most of whom don't even like country music!). I was not surprised to read that they are one of Seattle's most popular up-and-coming bands...
The songs are beautifully written - they strike you with simple expressions of heart-felt emotions. Their first song, Island, begins "She was born on an island - she hates the water". Jennifer Potter has a beautiful clear and uplifting voice which blends seamlessly with the honkytonk guitar and slide guitar of Chris Cline and Kevin Suggs. The melodies are straight forward and simple - the kind that you find yourself humming hours after you listened to the cd - but, as many times as I have listened to this cd, they continue to grow on me. There is something very special here. The sound is open and uncluttered, but with the intelligent lyrics, beautiful singing and plenty of foot-stomping rhythms, this music has real "bottom" to it. If you ever get a chance to see this band live, do so at all costs - they are a wonderful live band!
I fell asleep.......2001-11-02
I purchased this cd because I,m in the music business myself, and am always looking for new exciting country artists. What a disappointment! There is nothing original in this compilation of re-hashed country songs. I was particularly looking forward to hearing the vocal stylings of Ms. Potter, since I had read reviews that praised her voice as silvery, pure, and full of feeling. Once again i was let down. She's competent, but I felt nothing deeply emotive from her cliched country delivery. Do yourself a favor-skip this one and go for a classic.
